revolverXDanyone can help me to restore grub after windows 7 graciously obliterated it out of existence?02:52
revolverXDstarted the ubuntu live cd but it can't find grub there :\02:53
revolverXDand when i try to find /boot/grub/stage1 it cant find it02:54
phillwrevolverXD: give me a couple of minutes02:54
revolverXDthx m8:)02:54
gheilWhen i do02:55
gheilSystem/Prefences/Monitors02:55
gheilit yields an alert window:02:55
gheilCould not get screen information02:55
gheilRANDR extension is not present02:55
gheil[close]02:55
gheilThis leaves my main monitor upside down...02:55
gheilanyway to restore that file or otherwise renormalize funtioning?02:55
gheilCould have happened either when i installed the Nvidia driver, or xfce, or system/pref/appearances/visual effects... do not know where but ion the latter i seem stuck at "none"02:55
phillwrevolverXD: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=101470802:55
gheilthanks!02:55
revolverXDgonna try it out now thx02:57
phillwgheil: I'm not really in the know on RandR, but I can give you a hint that may help?03:02
gheilsure!03:02
revolverXDlol this will take some work - now i need to put windows 7 entry in grub :)03:02
phillwhttp://forum.phillw.net/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=8403:03
revolverXDbut thx at least i got my linux back :)03:03
phillwrevolverXD: it is easier to reinstall the win7 boot, then use the same thread to put grub on.03:03
phillwrevolverXD: the 1st thing to do, as ever, is to make sure win can boot03:04
revolverXDim gonna dig into it some more i remember somewhere i read that you need to add something to grub boot file so you could see windows 7 loader03:05
phillwrevolverXD: if you have read through that thread, you will find the answers; and be able to ask.03:08
revolverXDthx phillw i will read more in the thread then03:10
phillwit is well supported thread, try from the front for instructions, then head toward the last postings to see how others are getting on. It is a curse of a good set of instructions --- too many pages  :-\03:12
revolverXDlol i didnt even noticed there were other pages :)03:15
phillwit's a well known topic03:15
phillwwe do try to heard people over to that thread, no offence meant.03:16
revolverXDnone taken i used to do things on my own but im just too new to linux to start doing things like installing other OS on it so i find myself here occasionally :)03:18
phillwrevolverXD: I'm here a lot of time, use the ping function to leave a message when I am phillw_away and I will catch up with it.03:20
revolverXDthx :)03:21
gheil@phillw, Ah well when i system/administration/multiple screens a window simply flashed on and vanished from site. So i gather grandr is "incompatible" with my system.03:23
gheilAt the least i would like to get rid of the upside down screen as ubuntu's main screen, or even altogether03:23
phillwrevolverXD: it is why I am here... https://wiki.ubuntu.com/phillw is me, and http://www.jonobacon.org/2008/12/19/the-ubuntu-ethos/ is why I do it03:23
svakshaphillw: i tightened the connectors to both the disk and mobo. maybe that was why the bios could not detect it. Re, dust, there is some which i can only clean superficially. Most of the parts connected to the circuits  on the mobo are so fragile that I dont want to touch them unnecesarily.03:25
svakshaphillw: thanks for the help. Today morning when i booted it, the disk worked :)03:26
revolverXDonly one question lucid lynx comes with grub 2 or is it 1?03:27
phillwsvaksha: I'd strongly recommend you get a 2nd hard drive.03:27
phillwrevolverXD: grub203:27
revolverXDthx03:27
stlsaintphillw: see post in wiki03:28
svakshaphillw: yes...it seems like a warning that its on its last legs :(03:29
revolverXDlol phillw you know how i solved it in the end?03:29
revolverXDsudo grub-update :)03:30
phillwrevolverXD: do tell... I like a happy ending03:30
revolverXDit found the boot loader and found every other thing on the HHD :)03:30
phillwrevolverXD: you got to take your hat off to GRUB .. it's darn good at the job it was givien.03:31
revolverXDarr i mean update-grub03:31
revolverXDyeah indeed it is03:31
revolverXDwell m8 thx for the help and now i think i will have a well deserved sleep :)03:32
jazzisjazzHowdy all, I'm a ubuntu newbie looking for a good place to ask questions about setting up a dual boot with xp pro, am I in the right place for that?03:44
stlsaintyes03:48
stlsaintjazzisjazz: howdy03:48
stlsaintjazzisjazz: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot03:49
jazzisjazzI looked there but wound up using a different set of instructions03:54
jazzisjazzhere - http://members.iinet.net.au/~herman546/p3.html03:56
stlsaintjazzisjazz: yea herman does do some great tuts03:57
jazzisjazzbackground 500gb disk with xp image transferred via ghost from 80gb disk to 105gb partion to start03:59
jazzisjazznext 105 gb primary, ext3, /, for the ubuntu install04:02
jazzisjazznext added 245gb logical, fat32, /windows - I wanted a large space for file storage that both windows and ubuntu could access - forgot that fat32 partitions max at 32gb04:06
jazzisjazznext 5gb, swap04:07
jazzisjazznext wanted to leave @45gb unused just incase it might be need for something in future04:08
jazzisjazzubuntu began installing but reports that the 245gb vfat could not be created - I guess due to size04:10
jazzisjazzHow do i setup that space so that both OSes have access to things stored there?04:12
stlsaintjazzisjazz: do you understand what partitions are?04:12
stlsaintjazzisjazz: why are you using vfat for that 245gb partition?04:13
stlsaintjazzisjazz: why not ntfs?04:13
stlsaintjazzisjazz: if you just want a spare "data" drive than just partition it off and format it ntfs. That way you can mount it in windows and in ubuntu and be able to use it in both OS'es! :D04:16
jazzisjazzI was following a format recommendation suggested for a much smaller hard drive, I have set up one dual boot before and probably did use ntfs for that one but was trying to closely follow directions and just goofed04:17
jazzisjazzright now the 245gb is listed as free space, to set it up as you suggest would it be set logical or primary?04:21
jazzisjazzIf I choose logical, beginning, then ntfs does not appear as a "use as" option04:23
stlsaintjazzisjazz: your confusing how this drive will be used04:24
stlsaintjazzisjazz: you do NOT have to do anything with this free space during the installation of ubuntu04:25
stlsaintyou can leave it completely alone and format it after you install ubuntu with either ubuntu or windows04:25
stlsainti would sugges using windows since its ntfs and thats windows specialty04:25
jazzisjazzso I should be able to go back to where I left off and just leave the formatting of that partition untill  later?04:27
stlsaintjazzisjazz: continue with the install of ubuntu as you would and leave that free space "free" and yes go back to it later using windows disk management04:29
jazzisjazzthe 245gb is free space, choosing forward gets a message that no root file system is defined. Please correct from the partitioning menu?04:34
jazzisjazzneeded to mark the ubuntu partition, /, and continue with the install - seems okay now , thanks for the help.04:52
s_markdoes anyone know how to limit incomming connections speed based on IP address? e.g. limit each ip max to 1MB/s. Would linux tc do the job, if so how?06:33
nishchayhello friends can anybody please help me setting up my apache2 server06:59
nishchayI am on Ubuntu 10.0406:59
phillwhi nishchay, how far have you gotten in setting it up?07:00
nishchayI have setup apache2, mysql, php5, phmyadmin everything. The only problem is that07:00
nishchayI am unable to change Document root07:01
nishchayit says Forbidden  You don't have permission to access / on this server.  Apache/2.2.14 (Ubuntu) Server at localhost Port 8007:01
phillwnishchay: how did you install your LAMP?07:01
nishchayusing apt-get manually07:01
phillwahh, then you fall into the 'do not do it via google' class of people.07:02
nishchayexactly :P07:02
phillwbefore we start, how old is your installation?07:03
nishchayso what should I do now07:03
nishchayit is around 12 hours old07:03
phillwcould I suggest a reinstall, it would save a lot of grief. I will go through it with you, but that would be quicker07:04
nishchaywhat should i reinstall? apache 2 only or everything?07:04
phillwI'd suggest start from a clean install, and use tasksel07:05
nishchayok so first of all i should remove all previous installation and then run tasksel07:06
nishchayam i going right?07:06
nishchayor i can run it and it will automatically overwrite everything?07:07
phillwnishchay: if you run tasksel, it *may* correct things for you07:07
phillwhttp://forum.phillw.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=407:07
phillwI'm giving a lesson on it on wedensday, too late for you07:08
nishchayok thnx so i am reinstalling now it afresh and will let you know as soon as it is done07:09
phillwthis guy went through the mill in getting it sorted http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=134986307:09
phillwa clean install is faster, as I do not know what the permission errors are07:09
svakshaphillw:out of curiosity, would tasksel be needed for apache2+python+mailman too?07:13
nishchayit says07:13
nishchaysudo tasksel07:13
nishchay$ sudo tasksel xserver-xorginstall tasksel: aptitude failed (100)07:13
* svaksha meant postgresql+apache2+python+mailman 07:14
svakshanishchay: try using apt-get07:14
phillwsvaksha: use tasksel to do each job07:14
nishchayi had installed it like that only but phillw has led me to do it an uninstall07:14
nishchaywhen i run tasksel07:15
nishchayit asked me a list to select from07:15
phillwsudo tasksel07:15
nishchayi selected LAMP server07:15
phillwgo choose LAMP07:15
nishchayand unchecked all other else07:15
phillwtasksel will have nothing checked07:15
nishchayit uninstalled bluefish, ubuntu desktop and many more packages07:15
nishchayand then ended up in error07:16
nishchayagain same :07:16
nishchaynishchay@nishchay-desktop:~$ sudo tasksel tasksel: aptitude failed (100)07:16
nishchaywhat now?07:16
phillwnishchay: and you wonder why it does not work? Bluefish has nothing to do with LAMP07:16
svakshaphillw: well, i used apt-get for apache2(it works), python2.5, and PG but mailman i build manually07:16
nishchayeverything was working absolutely fine with my apache2 and all the only problem was I wanna set my DocumentRoot to point somewhere else07:17
phillwcan we just put the ghost of apt-get this, that and the other to bed? https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/index.html07:18
phillwtasksel, live and get on with it. apt-get stuff is prior to 9.04 - the fact it is still popular on google is not the fault of ubuntu07:18
phillwall the ubuntu pages on the subject point to the server manual; I really do not know why people will not use them.07:19
phillwthen come on saying "it doesn't work" :p07:20
AmrHHi07:57

ubuntuRight. I just installed ubuntu Lucid on a portable drive plugged in via Usb. Iv got windows installed on my "standard" hard drive. During the partition page while installing i picked #2 alternative to use the whole drive (as i have windows on a diff drive it wouldnt matter) But after installation i cant boot on anything but the liveCD. Tried searching the ubuntu documentation but i didnt find any info on that particular issue (whereas its on two15:19
ubuntudiff physical drives)15:19
ubuntuWhen booting, im getting the message - Error: No such device : "my portable discs name"  and then new line - Grub rescue>15:20
holsteinubuntu: you installed ubuntu on an external drive?15:39
ubuntuaye15:40
holsteinand you got windows on the internal one?15:40
ubuntuyep15:40
holsteinand when the internal one is not plugged in..15:40
holsteinyou get an error booting windows?15:40
holsteincorrect?15:40
ubuntunope15:40
holsteinexternal*15:40
* holstein just waking up15:40
ubuntudoesnt matter if its plugged in or not - it wont boot15:40
holsteinhmmm15:40
holsteinyou going to need to get you windows partition booting15:41
holsteinyou can use the windows disc15:41
holsteinand recover the windows bootloader15:41
ubuntuok15:41
holsteinthen, i would suggest really reading about a couple things15:41
holsteinyou could...15:41
holsteininstall grub to the external drive as well15:42
holsteinthen15:42
holsteinyou would choose that HD to 'boot'15:42
holsteinyou would see the grub list15:42
holsteinand boot ubuntu15:42
holsteinAFAIK15:43
holsteinif you install grub15:43
holsteinand have ubuntu on an external drive15:43
holsteinyou MUST have that external drive plugged in for anything to boot15:43
holsteinnot ideal15:43
holsteinubuntu: you could try something like http://gag.sourceforge.net/15:44
ubuntumm i was afraid that id have to have it plugged in to boot anything15:45
holsteinubuntu: in the last step of the installer15:45
holsteintheres an 'advanced' button?15:45
holsteinsomething like that down at the bottom right in the window15:45
holsteinthats where you can tell grub where to go15:46
holsteinor not to be installed15:46
ubuntuuhm.15:46
ubuntuRight, but im new to this partitioning thing so i figured id go with the safe way and letting it choose for me15:47
holsteinsure15:47
holsteinand it chooses to install the OS where you say15:47
ubuntuI suppose having dualboot with 2 discs aint meant to be for beginners after all :)15:47
holsteinand grub to the main HD15:47
holsteinubuntu: try GAG15:48
holsteinif its the same as it used to be15:48
ubuntuwhat if i install grub to my internal disc? wouldnt i then be able to choose just windows if external aint plugged in?15:48
holsteinyou dont need to install it to ues it15:48
holsteinubuntu: you'll install grub to the external disc15:48
holsteinthen if there is an option in the bios15:49
holsteinsomething like 'press f9 to choose boot device'15:49
holsteinyou just choose that disc15:49
holsteinBUT you got to get windows booting again15:49
ubuntuYe15:49
ubuntuSo, fix the bootloader for windows. and after that just choose which disc to boot on via bios15:50
holsteinafterthat15:50
holsteinyou'll need to install grub15:50
holsteinon that external drive15:50
holsteinthen you can choose15:50
holsteinassuming thats the way you want to go15:51
saji89ubuntu, holstein - alternatively you could install ubuntu on the external hard-disk, along with grub on it. Allow windows to boot using Windows bootloader. While booting, every time you need to use ubuntu, you can select the option to "Boot from external USB/HD" from the BIOS. Now, the GRUB on the external HD will take you in. Will that be ok?15:51
ubuntusaji89 yeah that sounds like a plan.. it was the plan up to the time where windows didnt want to boot any more15:51
ubuntuluckely i have a windows cd laying around so hopefully thatll fix it15:52
holsteinubuntu: you got a fresh install15:52
saji89ubuntu, Yep.15:52
holsteinso even if you need to totally reinstall to do it15:52
holsteinwhatever15:52
ubuntubut isnt grub installed by default on external disc cause thats where ubuntu was installed.15:52
saji89ubuntu, Installing ubuntu on external Hard-disk is explaine din this link- http://www.pendrivelinux.com/installing-ubuntu-to-a-usb-hard-drive/15:52
holsteinubuntu: nope15:52
holsteindoest have to be15:53
saji89ubuntu, but Its about ubuntu 7.04 version. Anyways I see no reason why it should not work witj newer ones.15:53
saji89with*15:53
saji89ubuntu, please see that link, i think it exactly tells you how to get the bootloader(GRUB) on external HD, without harming your current windows bootloader(After a fresh install of Windows, first).15:54
ubuntumm, so all i really did wrong was not to remove the internal disc.15:54
ubuntuSomething got installed "destroying" the bootloader there etc15:54
holsteinubuntu: you can look15:55
ubuntuye15:55
ubuntuseems so15:55
holsteinin that step in the installer15:55
holsteinand tell grub what disc to go to15:55
ubuntuwell, thats only via advanced setup @ the partition stage if im not wrong15:55
holsteinits after partioning15:56
holsteinpartitioning*15:56
holsteinstep 6 i think15:56
holsteinits the last step where you confirm everything15:56
holsteini *always* look there15:57
ubuntuahh yeah i bet your right15:57
ubuntuwell15:57
holsteinjust to make sure15:57
ubuntui did15:57
ubuntubut apparently didnt know what i was looking for15:57
holsteinhmmm15:57
holsteini always go by the size15:57
holsteinthe HD size15:57
ubuntuwell15:58
holsteinsometimes its hard to tell what is what by the labels15:58
ubuntui made sure it was installed on the right drive15:58
holsteinwhen the sizes are different15:58
ubuntuyeah i doublechecked in gparted to make sure it wouldnt overwrite my windows drive15:58
ubuntubut i didnt really look for grub info15:58
holsteinAH15:59
holsteinyou mean in the partitioner15:59
holsteinyeah15:59
ubuntuAnyway yeah ill try windows cd to fix bootloader to start with15:59
holsteinive wiped a lot of windows boot parts by accident ;)15:59
holsteini look there everytime now16:00
holsteinsaves some time16:00
ubuntufixmbr and fixboot doesnt require reinstallation right?16:00
ubuntutrue16:00
holsteinAFAIK16:00
holsteinfixmbr is what i used16:00
holsteinthat was back at XP16:00
ubuntuyeah i found a link by googling16:00
ubuntuand it says to use fixmbr and fixboot16:01
ubuntutrial and error :)16:01
holsteinif you can get to a prompt16:01
holsteinits not that hard16:01
* saji89 Its google-Fu always to your rescue. :)16:01
holsteinubuntu: good luck16:02
ubuntuThanks16:02
* holstein BBL16:02
ubuntu_How do i make the installation process find my Hard drive if this doesn't happen automatically? :)17:27
ubuntu_Gparted can find the hard drive (with both partitions) but when i reach "Prepare partitions" in the installation process the window is blank..17:45
