rrvaHi! I need a guide similar to http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/System_Encryption_with_LUKS_for_dm-crypt#Encrypted_swap_with_suspend-to-disk_support for ubuntu00:38
rrvaanyone?00:38
DaekdroomHas anyone noticed nautilus is using too much memory?03:11
DaekdroomI just realized it's using 160MB :|03:11
Daekdroomturns out bug 174809 is kinda old.03:15
ubottuLaunchpad bug 174809 in nautilus (Ubuntu) "Nautilus using more and more memory (depending on the system up-time)" [Medium,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/17480903:15
DanaGhmm, is there still both "remove drive" and "eject" in Nautilus?03:21
DanaGThe way Win7 describes things is nice: if I have an eSATA CD drive, it gives two options: "Eject Disk Name (F:)" and "Remove HL-DT-ST GSA-T50L Optical Drive".03:22
DaekdroomDanaG, as far as I remember, that same thing also happens in nautilus03:22
DaekdroomI remember getting confused about which one using to unplug my cellphone.03:22
DanaGThe key is it's not just "safely remove" and "eject" -- it gives the name. Eject *disk name* versus remove *drive name*03:23
DaekdroomSo, there is a difference between unmouting something and unplugging it..03:24
DanaGYeah, unmount is a third state.03:24
DanaGAnalogy: USB SD reader in my dad's desktop: "eject" on drive leter ejects card; "safely remove" removes reader itself, requiring a reboot to get it back.03:25
DanaGer, letter.03:25
DanaGI also kind of wish we had a "device attached" sound.03:27

gordanyone using nvidia on maverick able to confirm really poor 2d performance?15:59
IdleOnegord: what do you mean by poor?16:00
gordIdleOne, gtk takes forever to do anything, scroll windows. render things, anything. happens on my two nvidia machines16:00
IdleOnenope, nothing like that for me so far16:00
om26ergord, that might be appmenu-gtk causing..16:01
gordom26er, already removed that16:01
IdleOneI do have one issue when trying to play Assault Cube but for the life of me I am not able to describe it :/16:02
gordxorgs cpu just hits 99% on my dual core as well, its crazy16:04
gordand very much not fun16:04
rippsIs it safe to resize my ext4 partitions? I want to shrink my root partition and expand my /home16:06
om26erripps, resizing is not safe but worked for me everytime I tried16:08
rippsom26er: I've pretty much filled my /home, but I have a ton unused space in /, so I was hoping I could get a little more space.16:09
rippsWhat would be the safest way to go about it?16:10
om26erripps, start the live session and use gparted there I guess.16:10
rippsthat's what I figured16:11
Andre_Gondimwhat is the software that will replace f-stop?18:29
Andre_Gondimwhat is the software that will replace f-spot?18:29
G_A_Cshotwell?18:29
Andre_Gondimyeah, thanks18:29
h00kYep18:35
DaekdroomWhen is shotwell replacing F-spot anyway? o.o18:50
om26erDaekdroom, soon18:51
om26ermy guess next week.18:52
duffydackI have lucid with just / /home and swap.  I have 30gig spare at the end for maverick, can I install maverick with a /boot partition and not affect lucid?19:23
toabctli updated to 10.10 and now my computer is very very slow. the led of the harddisk is blinking all the time. any known bugs about this?20:18
toabctleg installation of unity needs about 20 minutes and evolution does not start20:19
yofeltoabctl: can you check with 'iotop' what is using your hdd all the time? Or does you system maybe use swap excessively?20:19
toabctlyofel, evolution is using 99%20:29
yofelhm, then the question is why, I personally don't use it so I can't help you, you'll have to wait for someone else who might know more20:31
DrHalananyone using the network-indicator here?20:38
duffydackto answer my own question, it`ll be fine.  just tried it in a vm.20:43
DrHalanwhat question duffydack20:44
yofelduffydack: it should be fine, only thing that might interfere is grub20:44
duffydackyofel, I told it not to install grub.20:44
duffydackI just booted lucid and ran update-grub and20:44
DrHalando you guys have a update-grub being triggered when a new kernel gets installed?20:45
duffydackdone20:45
DrHalanbecause i always have to call it manually20:45
duffydackso whats good about this btrfs...20:45
yofelduffydack: that should work fine then20:46
DrHalanduffydack: it has build in raid and backups20:46
duffydackDrHalan,  hmm, I dont have any raid setups, and I do my own backups.20:46
DrHalanduffydack: if you cahnge a file in btrfs it does not overwrite it but instead creates a new one. that makes it possible to undo changes20:47
DrHalanits not static time based backups20:47
DrHalanyou should do those anyways in case your harddsik may break20:48
duffydackDrHalan, ah.  so it uses more disk space20:48
DrHalanafaik it removes old files if free space gets rare but im not an expert20:49
duffydackDrHalan, does it have that 5% nonsense like ext?20:49
DrHalan?20:49
duffydackreserved space20:49
DrHalanyou mean swap?20:49
duffydackfirst thing I do after every install is tune2fs -m 020:50
Andre_Gondimafter the last update, when I rebooting Ubuntu, my ubuntu freezing after GDM and I needed to reinstall20:50
duffydackok here goes, real world install :020:51
DrHalanwhat does that doo20:53
DrHalana duffydack is gone..20:53
yofelDrHalan: you can set reserved space that is only writable by the root user so a regular user can't fill up the whole disk and make system services break for out of space issues20:55
yofelby default reserved space is 5%20:56
DrHalanwoa..20:56
DrHalanand that area is still labled free by nautilus?20:56
yofelnot sure20:57
yofelit should be labled used I think20:57
DrHalanbut 5% is like 6 gb on my system20:58
DrHalanwtf..20:58
yofelwell, that percentage is from the times of 1GB hdds ^^20:59
DrHalanyeah but why isn'T there a fixed size as limit21:00
yofeluse tune2fs -m <percentage> to change it21:00
yofeldunno21:00
DrHalanwell i sitl have like 15 gbs free so i don'T bother..21:00
DrHalan6gb is like the leftover of WoW when i deleted it from wine ^^21:00
yofelok, it seems '-r' is a fixed value21:00
yofel[ -r reserved-blocks-count ]21:01
yofel[ -m reserved-blocks-percentage ]21:01
duffydackmy god that was worse than installing win3.1122:09
duffydackit took me over an hour to get to 67% installing/configuring/preparing using the alternate installer,  just as I was about to say Enough and reboot, it locked.22:10
duffydackI`ll wait for a daily-live that will let me choose to not install grub (the last 2 or 3 wont let me)22:11
=== C-S-B_ is now known as C-S-B
tmztduffydack: it locked? changing vt didn't help?22:35
duffydacktmzt, nope.  I proceeded to alt+sysrq rseiub but after the e it dropped me back to an error with installer so I could abort it.  this was alpha2,  burned onto a usb stick with startup disk creator in lucid.22:38
jwattwhen I try to install 10.10 alpha 2 from DVD, after selecting English and choosing Install, I just get a black window with a blinking cursor in the top left22:58
jwattis that a known issue?22:58
ZykoticK9jwatt, it sounds like it might be a problem with plymouth if you don't see any graphics when the computer starts.  What gfx card are you using?  Do you know if the LiveCD for 10.10 (and 10.04 for that matter) work correctly?23:02
jwattI know I have a late 2008 macbook pro23:04
jwattI can look up the graphics card for that, but I don't know the answer to the other questions, ZykoticK923:04
jwattthe flashing cursor would seem to suggest to me that it could be something other than a graphics problem though23:05
jwattand note that the install doesn't seem to start23:06
jwatt(as opposed to this being a problem after installing)23:06
ZykoticK9jwatt, sorry man, I've never owned any apple hardware and have no insights at all into getting it working.  Best of luck man.  "lspci | grep -i vga" should tell you your graphics info.23:07
jwattNVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics processor23:08
jwattfrom my mbp's specs http://support.apple.com/kb/sp49923:08
jwattfair enough23:08
ZykoticK9jwatt, does bug #550950 apply to you?23:11
ubottuLaunchpad bug 550950 in nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) "Blank screen with nvidia drivers on Macbook Pro 5,5 13.3"" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/55095023:11
jwattZykoticK9: from the sounds of it that's a completely blank screen - no output at all - so probably a graphics problem23:14
jwattwhich sounds a bit different to the flashing white cursor that I have - which sounds like something is stalled23:15
ZykoticK9jwatt, i get a couple seconds of flashing cursor before plymouth loads with my nvidia right now23:15
jwattplymouth is used to start the installer too?23:18
ZykoticK9jwatt, are you still in #ubuntu channel as well?  see Dr_Willis's comment from a moment ago.  and we believe plymouth is used on the livecd.23:24
