profus2its a decoder to decode *.otr files00:00
charlie-tcaAre you using xubuntu 8.04 (Hardy)?00:00
charlie-tcaIf you are using anything newer, that may be the problem00:01
charlie-tcaAfter you unpack that archive, you have to manually move the files where the README.OTR tells you to move them to. You can use google translate to read the file, if needed.00:05
=== thoffmeyer|AFK is now known as thoffmeyer
meowmixi am using the 10.04 version of xubuntu00:09
profus2@charlie-tca: i am using the lastest version of xubuntu00:10
charlie-tcaprofus2: That file was built for Ubuntu 9.04 which is two years old. It may not work for you now. However, you still would have to move the files manually after unpacking.00:12
charlie-tcano, built for Ubuntu 8.04.100:12
profus2the funny thing is, I unpacked it and it runs and works fine00:13
charlie-tcaBut that README.OTR file tells you where to stick the files, except it is in german.00:13
profus2as a newbie I just don't know where to put the files00:13
charlie-tcaThen it is usable. There won't be a menu entry for it00:13
profus2ok, where should I put the files - subdirectory of /bin ?00:15
profus2thank you and good night00:16

charlie-tcaYou are welcome00:18
=== thoffmeyer|AFK is now known as thoffmeyer
charlie-tcaI would stick them in ~/bin if they are not needed system wide. That way the user can access them and use them with no problems00:19

mintwhen i am booting it says 'disk boot fail, file system error' or something :s it wouldnt even let me boot off a disk i had to restart around 20 times and i got lucky07:24
IledenHi! My xubuntu says at every boot: "keys:Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery", what is this about?08:16
IledenIt happens right at the xubuntu bootup image, not at the desktop08:19
moetunesthis is the only google return I got - http://forumubuntusoftware.info/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=4749&start=1008:19
Iledenyeah, looks like the same problem there (though probably posted at a wrong place, since I don't think it has anything to do with video cards).08:21
IledenI've tried googling too, but it hasn't helped :/08:21
moetuneshave you tried pressing s?08:22
moetunesor m?08:22
Iledenyup, s gets me trhough to the system, where everything is normal08:23
Iledenhmm... wait a sec... I'll try one thing to locate the problem...08:23
Iledenoookay. It's about an SD card I want to be mounted at bootup.08:30
IledenI have it listed in fstab, and I assume xubuntu is trying to do a routine check on in, cannot mount it (for some reason), and ends up waiting for it to be mounted08:31
IledenUbuntu didn't have problems with it being listed in fstab thouhg. Any idea on solutions?08:32
moetunesI know nothing about sd cards sorry08:32
Iledenwell, is there a way to make xubuntu never do a routine check on a specific drive?08:32
moetunestake it out of fstab maybe08:33
Iledenmoetunes: yea, but that makes it not mounted at bootup08:33
moetunesis it getting mounted now?08:33
Iledenmoetunes: also it won't get mounted automatically to the location I want08:34
moetunescan you paste your fstab?08:34
Iledensure08:35
Iledenum, ok, no it doesn't get mounted automatically right now :(08:36
Iledeni thought it did.08:36
Iledenand it seems I need root permission to mount it.08:36
moetunesfrom the error ypu pasted it needed you to manually mount it - the press m bit08:36
Iledenyea, that gets me to a prompt.08:37
Iledenhm, how do I give an user permission to mount a specific drive08:38
moetunesonly root can do mount - you need to use sudo08:39
Iledenfstab: http://ubuntu.pastebin.com/1w7WjTRA08:39
Iledenmoetunes: yea, but I would like to give permission for my user, so I could mount it automatically08:39
Iledenwho knows, maybe that'll get rid of the problem somehow too08:39
moetunesafaik the best you could do is add a line in visudo to make mounting without a password possible08:40
moetunesyou'll still need sudo tho08:41
Iledenah, found it. " The user option allows normal users to mount the device, whereas nouser lets only the root to mount the device. nouser is the default"08:41
Iledenlet's see...08:42
Iledenwait... I already have the user option there!08:42
Iledengrr.08:42
Iledenhow come I don't have permission to mount it.08:43
Iledenwell, that's not the main issue though, the problem is how to get rid of the "s to skip",etc prompt at bootup08:44
IledenI'll ask the mount permission from ubuntu main channel with more ppl, maybe they'll know of the issue08:45
moetunesyou could try fstab without the   ,uhelper=hal   part08:45
Iledenok08:46
Iledendidn't change anything08:49
moetunesk08:50
Iledenwait, the user option DOES work, and I can mount the drive without sudo08:50
Iledeni just srcewed up there before08:51
Iledensorry :)08:51
Iledenanyway, the prompt is still there at bootup08:51
moetunesyou might need someone with sd card experience for this08:53
Iledenyup08:53
Iledenhmm, adding the noauto option to fstab did fix the prompt... but of course now it still doesn't mount at bootup08:56
IledenI could try executing the mount at bootup - what can I do to make a command run at bootup?08:57
IledenOh, and from that I remember another question I was going to ask: How do I stop certain services (ssh, apache, mysql) to not start at bootup with xubuntu?08:58
moetunesI would check the syslog to see if it writes an error about it - might give a clue08:58
Ileden(sorry, there was an extra "no" in that question)08:58
moetunesyou can put a command in /etc/rc.local to have it run at boot09:00
moetunesand change the S to K from in front of services you don't want to start in /etc/rc*.d09:01
Iledenmoetunes: ok, thanks09:01
moetunesthe " put a command in /etc/rc.local to have it run at boot" wasn't right - it will run when the runlevel starts iirc Ileden09:02
moetuneswhich is during boot09:03
Iledenmoetunes: so I change the file names in /etc/rc*.d/? not edit the file contents?09:03
Iledenmoetunes: well, that's good enough, I don't need the mount point at anything in boot time09:04
Iledenmoetunes: and it seems to work ok. thank you! It's a bit of a workaround to the issues but that's not a problem :)09:04
moetunesgreat that it works :]09:05
moetunesand yep - just change the letter at the start from S (which means start) to K09:06
Iledenhmm, the services, at least apache2, seems to be in multiple of those directories, where in some it's K and some it's S...09:08
Iledenso those directories represent different runlevels?09:09
Iledenand the S determines it's Starting the service at that runlevel, in the order of the numbers I gather, but what does K then mean?09:10
moetunesyep they're diff runlevels and the is symbolic for kill09:11
moetunesyep they're diff runlevels and the k is symbolic for kill09:11
Iledenso instead of starting it, i set it to be killed (even though there is no instance of it)?09:12
moetunesif you delete the link the next update it will prob be remade09:13
moetunesthe files in the runlevel dirs are links to scripts in /etc/init.d09:13
Iledenyup, so it seems. also the README there tells me to run update-rc.d afterwards.09:14
Iledenhmm, this is rather interesting. I'll do some reading up on the runlevels.09:15
moetunesonce you undestand it it is pretty straightforward but you need to keep an eye on the changes ubunuts make09:16
Iledenit seems on ubuntu I only need to change runlevel 209:27
moetunesmostly yes just runlevel 209:31
bazhang!runlevels09:31
ubottuIn Ubuntu all runlevels except 0,1 and 6 are by default equal. Also keep in mind that Ubuntu now uses !Upstart instead of System V init so there is normally no /etc/inittab.09:31
Ileden!Upstart09:32
ubottuUpstart is meant to replace the old Sys V Init system with an event-driven init model.  For more information please see: http://upstart.ubuntu.com/09:32
IledenYeah... mysql and ssh don't even show up in /etc/rc*.d/...09:33
moetunesubuntu does keep changing things ...09:43
bazhangaptitude is being removed as of Meerkat09:45
mintwhen i am booting it says 'disk boot fail, file system error' or something :s it wouldnt even let me boot off a disk i had to restart around 20 times and i got lucky09:58

Xubuntu_NewbHi everyone, quick question. After I did unzipped a tarball to install a program, and then I read in the install file about me needing some sort of development headers, and it gave a list of items, some of them were libICE-dev, X, libvoris. Then I tried ./configure to start installing the program, but it gave me a configure:error can't find libICE, does that mean I have to install all the items listed myself?17:45
Xubuntu_NewbUsing Ubuntu Software Center, or Synaptic Package Manager?17:45
charlie-tca__Is the application you are trying to install not in Synaptic Package Manager?17:48
handjobXubuntu_Newb: Yes, installing from tarballs in pain in the ass. You really don't want to do this unless: You are pretty good at Linux, You have no other alternative.17:50
Xubuntu_NewbYeah, I couldn't find recordMyDesktop in Ubuntu Software Center17:50
Xubuntu_NewbSo, I thought I would need to install from tarballs.17:51
handjobXubuntu_Newb: First look on the web. Maybe there is available in other repositories / in .deb package. If not try to look for other softwer that does same thing, if not good luck and have a nice fun in slackware land.17:52
Xubuntu_NewbSlackware?17:52
pleia2Xubuntu_Newb: recordmydesktop is the package you want (it is in the software center)17:52
Xubuntu_NewbI looked, it didn't appear to be there. Anyway, to answer my questions, do I have to install those libraries first, then rune ./configure again?17:53
pleia2Xubuntu_Newb: what version of xubuntu are you using?17:53
Xubuntu_NewbErm, latest Lucid Lynx? More specific answers?17:54
Xubuntu_NewbSorry, it appears I'm sounding a bit rude, forgive me, but do I just install those libraries?17:54
pleia2recrodmydesktop is definitely there then, search it as one word17:54
pleia2there should be an README that came with the tarball, but you really don't want to do this unless it satisfies what handjob suggests, and it doesn't seem to be the case here17:55
pleia2installing tarballs is messy and can get complicated very fast17:55
Xubuntu_NewbFound it :D Yeah, I read the README didn't provide much, and I read the Install file. I guess when I searched it USC I used capitalization17:55
pleia2there you go :)17:56
handjobI have recordmydesktop in my repositories.17:56
Xubuntu_NewbYeah, but since I'm already this far, I want to be able to install a tarball, in case I need to.17:56
handjobI will check in which one precisly.17:56
Xubuntu_NewbThis is what it says in the INSTALL file: You will need the development headers(i.e. packages ending with -dev or -devel17:57
Xubuntu_Newbdepending on the distribution you use) for the following:17:57
Xubuntu_NewbX17:57
Xubuntu_NewblibICE-dev17:57
Xubuntu_NewblibSM-dev17:57
Xubuntu_NewblibXext17:57
Xubuntu_NewblibXdamage17:57
Xubuntu_NewblibXfixes17:57
Xubuntu_Newblibogg17:57
pleia2Xubuntu_Newb: honestly most software comes with good README or Install files, I've never memorized the exact process for standard compiling17:57
Xubuntu_Newblibvorbis17:57

Xubuntu_NewbSorry.17:57
pleia2that install file is telling you to install the packages17:58
Xubuntu_NewbWell, do I have to install those?17:58
pleia2so libice-dev in ubuntu, install with software center17:58
pleia2same with libsm-dev17:58
pleia2they should all be there17:58
Xubuntu_NewbOkay, that answers my question, thank you very much, next time I'll search a bit harder in USC, and sorry if I sounded a bit snappy17:59
pleia2but really, use the ubuntu package, it'll get automatically upgraded with security and with the rest of the OS when you upgrade, rather than having an old tarball laying around that you manually have to upgrade and fix17:59
Xubuntu_NewbYeah, I understand, I just wanted to expand my knowledge so I'll be able to use these tools.18:00
* pleia2 nods18:00
handjobok ok18:00
handjobYou need to enable 'universe' repositories.18:01
handjobsudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list18:01
Xubuntu_NewbI read that this software uses open video formats, is it possible to convert them to .AVI and .MPG4 if I wanted to post on YouTube or Facebook etc.?18:01
handjobUnhash niverse repo.18:01
handjobsudo apt-get update18:02
pleia2handjob: actually the software center has a really nice tool for handling this :)18:02
handjobsudo apt-get install recordmydesktop18:02
pleia2edit > software sources18:02
Xubuntu_NewbDoes USC use the exact same repos as using apt-get, just that apt-get is CLI?18:02
handjobpleia2: To be honest I don't knew. I haven't been using it much.18:02
pleia2handjob: me neither, but it's the official way to support installs so I poke around and get to know it18:03
pleia2Xubuntu_Newb: yep18:03
Xubuntu_NewbWhat about aptitude?18:03
handjobaway18:04
pleia2Xubuntu_Newb: that uses the same sources too18:06
charlie-tca__Xubuntu_Newb: all repositories in Xubuntu/Ubuntu will use the same sources, it doesn't matter which application you use to do the installation18:06
