revolverXDhello guys have a little question does ubuntu has built-in syslog service? and if it does how do i access it?00:46
revolverXDi read something about rsyslog and tried to access it but the only responce i got from it is that its active00:47
revolverXDanyone?00:54
stlsaintrevolverXD: yo01:06
CalberthaHi all. Was here earlier and I'm still in a bind. Anyone round to help?01:10
revolverXDhi stlsaint01:10
CalberthaAnyone here?01:13
phillwCalbertha: hi01:13
revolverXDme ? :\01:13
CalberthaYou helping or looking for help?01:14
revolverXDlooking for help still trying to figure out how to run syslog on ubuntu01:14
* phillw sorry, I've been doing wiki pages. 01:14
CalberthaHahah, hey Phillw01:15
revolverXDhi m801:15
CalberthaI tried to do the reinstall for Grub but got big problems01:15
phillwCalbertha: ?? the reinstall of grub is absolute, unless the hard drive is dying :-/01:16
CalberthaWell lemme tell you how it went01:16
CalberthaBasically I know the hard drive isn't bad since the comp detects it every time I boot up. But when I try to load in the Ubuntu disc, the same one i did the original install with mind you, it shows this box that says LIVE with an ok button01:17
CalberthaProblem is, it won't let me click the button01:17
phillwCalbertha: on the posting I gave you, there is the 'mild' version of reinstalling, the 'medium' version and the 'to heck with it, just do it' versions :-)  How far did you go?01:18
revolverXDgod i think i will just buy the linux bible book and be done with it - trying to install apache or mysql became a torture for me01:18
CalberthaLike the mouse isn't working. I've tried 2 as well01:18
CalberthaWell..01:18
CalberthaI read all of it, and it all needs to be done from the desktop pretty much...whichhhhh I can't get to01:19
phillwrevolverXD: I recently did a classroom on LAMP, if you want an easier way, I will go get the notes and presentation for you.01:19
revolverXDi would really like that phillw cause i remeber i tryed to install LAMP at one point there01:19
revolverXDseems like some korean kid got access to my long dead battle net account and now it made a little bit more aware on my system security01:20
CalberthaThat sucks. Battle Net isn't the most secure thing hah01:21
phillwrevolverXD: http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2010/07/28/%23ubuntu-classroom.html01:22
phillwthat has the links to the pages that I used, and the classroom Q&A session01:22
revolverXDthank you very much phillw :)01:22
CalberthaOh btw Phillw, I also at one point got "Fix Symbol 'grub_puts' not found"01:23
phillwCalbertha: From a boot CD, you will be able to get grub installed?01:23
CalberthaWell like I said. When I boot up the original install CD, it shows a box saying LIVE and an ok button01:24
revolverXDare there anymore lessons in the near time?01:25
Calberthabut I cant click it01:25
phillwCalbertha: as i run dev stuff, the instructions for grub re-install do work ;-)01:25
CalberthaWell I'm sure they would if I could get to that part ya know01:26
phillwrevolverXD: yes there are01:26
CalberthaBut I just keep getting that box I can't click01:26
phillwI'd suggest that your cd is poorly :'(01:27
revolverXDis there a place i can see their schedule?01:27
CalberthaSo I guess I should make another?01:28
phillwrevolverXD: I'm just getting the inforation01:29
phillwCalbertha: ensure your CD passes the self test option01:29
revolverXDah thx im trying to install lamp now it seems i did install it at some point01:30
CalberthaI guess I'll try booting it up on another machine01:30
phillwrevolverXD: my draft notes from the classroom are over on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/phillw/draft01:31
phillwCalbertha: it's also worth running a CD cleaner in the cd/dvd drive01:33
CalberthaAlright then. Going to go try this real fast. Will return.01:34
phillwhi Mohan_chml :-)01:35
revolverXDjust out of curiosity what is tasksel?01:38
revolverXDis it something along the line of aptitude?01:38
=== IAmNotThatGuy is now known as Mohan_chml
phillwrevolverXD: it is a bit, but the "geeks" have made tasksel so that it asks some simple questions and gets on with it01:40
=== zz_severity1 is now known as severity1
revolverXDlol aptitude for the simple folks01:41
phillwrevolverXD: no, aptitude for people who do not want out of date instructions from "your favourite search engine"01:42
revolverXDsigh this wont be easy it seems - i got error 1045 while installing phpmyadmin01:43
revolverXDthe error says i enterd the right password but for some reason i cant do the reinstalling of the data base01:44
phillwrevolverXD: let me guess, have you previously tried to install LAMP?01:45
revolverXDoh yes :)01:45
phillw::sigh::01:45
revolverXDi allways try to do things alone first01:45
revolverXDanyway i ignored the data base and created a new one01:46
phillwlet me look it up; do you have data you need to keep?01:46
revolverXDno01:46
revolverXDmy next question wouldev been how can i manually delet my data base01:46
phillwyou need to assert your password for the MySQL area, phpmyadmin needs that01:47
revolverXDyes and i did gave the right password(the error even state i gave the right one) and still got the error01:48
phillwerror 1045 reports back as a windows error meeegae?01:51
phillware you using WAMP or LAMP~?01:51
revolverXDlamp01:51
revolverXDbut i pureged mysql and phpmyadmin and lamp and gonna reinstall them fron scratch01:52
phillwit would be the better version01:52
phillwrevolverXD: take out php as well01:53
revolverXDwell at lest the install window is what is stated in the slid :) that a good sighn01:53
revolverXDdone that allready01:53
phillwI'm puzzeled, as the tasksel ssytem should over-write :-\01:55
revolverXDdont worry i think i figured it out - i purged all the mysql ,lamp, phpmyadmin related pacges and now it seems to be on the right course of installation01:56
revolverXDpackages*01:56
* phillw ::sigh:: It really does madden me when people follow old instructions01:59
revolverXDok i got into my phpmyadmin root account01:59
phillwrevolverXD: it should be pretty much plain sailing from there :-)02:00
revolverXDhm looks kinda cool need to dedicate some time to learn what i can do with that :)02:00
phillwoh, indeed, follow the links from the classroom, they will educate you :-)02:01
revolverXDlol thx02:01
phillwrevolverXD: you are more than welcome, welcome to the LAMP club :-)02:03
revolverXDonly one thing i cant make the apache2 service to restart using the terminal - i navigated to the etc/init.d but the restart order wont work02:12

ronankennedyI'm trying to recover from disk problems with Ubuntu Netbook Edition. GRUB is just giving me a command line prompt. I have figured out how to get it to manually boot from the disk, but it stops with a kernel panic. Can anyone help?14:36
Mohan_chmlronankennedy: you remember the error or the next line displayed after GRUB>14:41
ronankennedyMohan_chml: no message, just a command line prompt14:42
Mohan_chmlahha15:07
Mohan_chmlronankennedy: its just stayed with "GRUB> " right!15:07
ronankennedyMohan_chml: yes15:07
Mohan_chmlronankennedy: I think your Grub is not Identifying the boot partitions15:17
Mohan_chmlmake a bootable USB stick and try getting in and look at the grub and update the grub if needed15:18
ronankennedyMohan_chml: yes, I've done that. I've re-installed GRUB through a live stick, and I think I've got the config right, but it just doesn't work.15:26
phillwronankennedy: you may want to try re-installing the kernel15:26
phillwhttp://forum.phillw.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=35  covers how to do that, and get grub to 'see' it.15:27
ronankennedyphillw: thanks, that looks useful15:29
ronankennedyphillw: I think that has worked... system is booting normally now. Many many thanks.15:48
phillwronankennedy: you're welcome.15:49

MarkRichHello everyone.  I'm using Ubuntuo 10.4 & I'd like to create a soft link in a directory other than the one I'm working in.  I use this command ln -s home/mark/data linktodata Desktop & it places the link on the desktop.  But when I access it it says it's a broken link.  I've also used this command which does the same thing.  ln -s home/mark/data linktodata -t Desktop.22:58
suprengrMarkRich: open nautilus - go to (e.g.) home folder - right click - use 'Make Link' - it will create link where you are - drag to folder of your choice.  Done... the easy way.23:04
MarkRichOK, but is there a way to use the command line & create a soft link to a directory other than the working one?23:07
suprengrMarkRich: Don't know answer to that when your method is failing,,, to much a 'fresh' (1 step above newbie?) myself.  I simply profer help when a lnown working soln to a prob works.23:11
