aveilleuxmungo63, What's up?00:37
isiah4200:38
mungo63hey man!  I have a system76 laptop that I think the wireless card went out on.  I'm trying to figure out what to do.00:38
aveilleuxWhat wireless chipset is/was it, mungo63?00:38
isiahthere is a way of finding that00:39
mungo63A couple of weeks ago it just stopped working.  I could not find the device anywhere on my system.  That is a question itself - should I be able to find this device somewhere?  How do you find out the wireless device?00:39
aveilleuxIt was a system76 laptop? Which one was it?00:40
mungo63i'm doing this chat on a windows machine because my linux machine can't get on the network.  I think the wired connection may also be bad00:40
mungo63A pangolin - panp4 I believe?  Does that sound right?  I got it in Dec. 08 - home use laptop with Ubuntu00:42
aveilleuxmungo63, this one? http://www.system76.com/product_info.php?cPath=28&products_id=10000:44
mungo63yes, similar to this, but mine has an Nvidia card00:45
aveilleuxmungo63, go to System > Administration > System76 Driver00:45
aveilleuxIt should list the specifics in there00:45
aveilleuxI apologize, but I am being called away00:49
aveilleuxI will be back soon00:49
mungo63Interesting.  WHen I do this, I get a pop up box saying this driver design for System76 machines running Ubuntu versions 6 thru 8.10.  I'm up to date on 10.0400:51
mungo63It did not give me any driver info.00:52
mungo63it looks like I have an Intel Wireless Wifi Link 5100.  Ethernet controller RealTek Semi.01:07

Gene_sno, the computer just comes up as 9.0401:29
Gene_sI have set the boot priority for the USB drive firsat01:30
Gene_sI am thinking the USB drive has not been properly load..I have done this twice or 3 times01:32
seidosGene_s, hmmm, I'm not sure how to check the usb drive's configuration.  I've never created a bootable usb drive.01:34
seidosGene_s, do you have another system to try the usb stick on?01:34
Gene_syes, my windows computer01:35

mungo63hello - Can someone help me with some questions about my wireless connection?02:46
zkriesse!ask | mungo6302:47
mungo63avielleux - I think you were trying to help me before02:47
ubot2mungo63: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)02:47
aveilleuxThat I was02:48
mungo63ok, understood.  My system76 machine has a problem with the wireless AND wired connection.  The wireless connection used to work until a couple of weeks ago02:48
zkriesseaveilleux: Hey my VERY GOOD friend!02:48
mungo63it looks like I have an Intel Wireless Wifi Link 5100.  Ethernet controller RealTek Semi.02:48
aveilleuxOh, both your wireless *and* wired connections are failing?02:49
mungo63Wen I do System-Administration-System76 drivers, I get a pop up box saying this driver design for System76 machines running Ubuntu versions 6 thru 8.10.  I'm up to date on 10.0402:49
mungo63yes, I don't think either connection works now.  I plugged the hard-wire in to my machine but I still can not connect to the internet02:50
aveilleuxmungo63: This may be of use to you: http://knowledge76.com/index.php/Panp4/Panp502:50
mungo63Are you saying I need to follow these instructions to fix my machine, or just to be able to run the System-Administration-System76 driver check?02:54
mungo63I was able to get some info from the System Testing option.  The report shows my Wireless to be intel and my ethernet controller to be Realtek.  Does this report mean the devices werre queried and responded, or does this system test just print out data from a stored file?02:58
aveilleuxmungo63: I honestly don't know. It sounds like the drivers need to be updated, but I don't know enough about the s76 laptops to know where to get that. Try:02:59
aveilleux!networking |mungo6302:59
ubot2Factoid 'networking' not found02:59
aveilleuxDurn.02:59
aveilleux!wireless |mungo6302:59
ubot2mungo63: Wireless documentation, including how-to guides and troubleshooting information, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs02:59
aveilleuxThat's better,02:59
mungo63actually, it looks like my ethernet connection is now working.  I'm going to sign in on my Linux machine now and try to diagnose the wireless problem.03:03
mungo631How do I check the status of my wireless device on my System76 laptop?03:05
shiloh09finally have my ubuntu box running!!!!  no more crap Jolicloud on my netbook!!!10:33

mhall119good morning16:14
mhall119I have a script that shreds certain files before my laptop goes into suspend16:15
mhall119but that's only going to work if ext4 file data is written to disk before my laptop enters suspend16:15
mhall119does anybody know if ext4 does that?16:15
paultagmhall119: just call sync16:16
paultagmhall119: I think it does, but set up the call to run sync16:17
mhall119ah, that's what I've been looking for16:17
paultagit flushes the metaphorical hell out of the buffers16:17
mhall119thanks paultag16:17
paultagsure mhall11916:17
mhall119cool, doesn't even slow things down that much16:18
paultagmhall119: nopers16:20
paultagmhall119: Firefox does it pretty regularly ( which sucks for old drives _16:20
paultagtr "_" ")"16:21
mhall119yeah, I've seen FF causing my IO to spike16:24
mhall119makes my HDD click, which I don't like16:24
mhall119it's not FF so much as sqlite16:25
mhall119it's a know performance problem with sqlite3 on ext416:25
paultagmhall119: it's not ext416:28
paultagmhall119: it's because it calls sync();16:28
paultagmhall119: ibuclaw wrote up something one time with rewriting it's solib and using an LD_PRELOAD hack to noop the sync call16:28
paultagmhall119: and it fixes it16:28
KrayonsHey guys, If any of you have any experience in FTPd and a multi-user setup please could you check out http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=155639517:58
geirhaMount-binding should work18:03
geirhamount-binding is «mount a directory on another directory»18:04
geirhamkdir -p /home/users/<user>/shares && sudo mount -o bind /home/shares /home/users/<user>/shares18:06
geirhaI have little to know experience with ftp-servers, so I don't know how to get those to handle symlinks properly.18:06
geirhagah. *little to no experience18:07
geirhaftp is an ancient protocol that should have died out years ago.18:08
KrayonsThank geirha18:50
KrayonsWill try that18:51
