MagicFabhi all00:21
MagicFabI am creating a small bash script to be invoked from cron. Where would a sysadmin expect to find such a file ?00:21
SpamapSMagicFab: if its tied to a deamon, then /usr/local/bin or /usr/local/lib. If its tied to a user, I'd recommend putting it in their home directory, $HOME/bin works.00:23
SpamapSMagicFab: I sould say, /usr/local/lib/daemon-name not /usr/local/lib directly00:23
MagicFabnot, it's just a regular maintenance task - check if XYZ exists, then do ABC00:24
MagicFab/usr/local/bin is what I thought but yes, the guide mentions /home. tx.!00:24
MagicFabSpamapS, thank you00:26

allquixoticHi -- I would like to connect to libvirt remotely using an encrypted channel, so I've been using SSH so far. But virt-manager wants to login as root always. I want to disable logging in as root to reduce attack surface on the server. Any idea of a workaround to this?22:11
qman__any system that does need to log in as root over SSH should be using strong, well-guarded keys to authenticate, not passwords22:12
qman__significantly reducing the attack surface22:12
allquixoticqman__: I'm already using public key authentication, but it's even more secure to prevent root logins over SSH at all.22:14
qman__of course, and it's even more secure to not allow remote logins at all ;)22:15
qman__it's a tradeoff, security versus convenience22:15
qman__if you need more protection, I'd suggest blocking direct connections to that server from the internet, and instead using SSH tunneling to a computer at the gateway22:16
allquixoticI'm not looking for something that extreme. My question is about alternative ways of authentication for libvirt.22:16
allquixoticRight now, libvirtd is the only service that *requires* a root login over SSH on the box. For anything else, I use SSL with trusted certificates.22:17
allquixoticI see just now that virt-manager allows you to create a connection to libvirt with SSL and X509 certs... hmm... I guess my question now is how to set that up on the server. :)22:17

benedikthow do i create a virtual hard drive in libvirt/kvm ?22:44
hallynin, or for?  you generally use qemu-img22:46
hallynqemu-img create -f qcow my_hd.img 10G22:46
benediktbah, i meant for :)22:47
hallynThen you can mostly 'virsh edit <vm_name>' and copy-paste the disk section to hook in the new disk22:47
hallynheh, just making sure :)22:47
benediktvi!? This has to be fixed22:49
hallyndoesn't it just use $VISUAL?22:49
benediktprobably22:50
hallynso replace it with ed and be happy :-)22:50
allquixoticbenedikt: if you can get libvirt connected to virt-manager, you can create the HDD graphically... although I don't think virt-manager is yet as flexible as virsh, so YMMV.22:50
benedikti was thinking more along the lines of emacs :P22:50
hallynyeah i dont' know that you can use virt-manager to hook in virtio disks yet, in particular22:51
benediktallquixotic: i connected with virt-manager but it doesn't seem to have any 'add hardware' features22:51
allquixoticI just asked a question about libvirt though; I'm setting up mine so that it only allows clients with signed X.509 certs (signed from the local CA) to connect22:51
allquixoticbenedikt: Which version of Ubuntu?22:51
benediktallquixotic: lucid22:51
allquixoticSame here... 10.04.1 Server22:51
allquixoticwhen I connect to the remote libvirtd using virt-manager (also on lucid), I can create hard disks for kvm graphically22:51
allquixoticit prompts you for the size and image type and all22:52
benediktallquixotic: where? I didnt see it.22:52
allquixoticbenedikt: it was when I first created the VM... although I'd think the same feature would be available with an extant VM22:52
allquixoticprovided you shut it down first22:52
allquixoticcan't add hardware to a running VM afaik22:52
hallynbenedikt: iirc you switch to 'edit VM' in the top menu of the window where you have the VM's screen up, and on the left there is 'add hardware'22:53
allquixoticah yes, you have to view the details of the VM22:53
allquixoticthen it lists the hardware pieces sorta like how VMware Server / VirtualBox do22:53
benedikt*cough* it might be a good idea to shut down the vm first22:53
bassohow can i set a higher priority on a process22:53
allquixotichehe, you had to shutdown and now you can add new disk? :)22:53
hallynbasso: renice22:53
hallyn(giveit a lower #)22:54
bassothx hallyn22:54
hallynnp22:55
benedikthallyn: the image i created with qemu-img keeps on growing after i created it23:01
hallynbenedikt: yes, it'll keep growing as you fill it up, up to whatever size you specified23:01
benedikthm23:02
benediktmeh, thats maybe not a bad idea23:02
benedikthallyn: is it usable until it has reached the size?23:12
hallynbenedikt: hm?  of course.  if i understand you correctly23:18
benediktthen it was a classic case of the pebkac23:18
hallynwhy?  did it break?23:19
benediktthe vm froze when i created the partition with fdisk23:19
hallynjinkeys23:27
hallyni've not actually had that happen.  Did you add it with the virt-manager gui, or virsh edit, or something else?23:27
benediktvirsh edit23:27
hallyncan you put the output of a 'virsh dump <vm_name>' on paste.ubuntu.com?  (or, is it working now?)23:35
benedikthallyn: i just forced it off and tried again23:36
benedikthttp://i.imgur.com/zUwRr.png23:39
benediktit doesnt look too bright right now23:39
hallynbenedikt: i wanted to see the xml definition of the vm23:43
benedikti konw, but thats not the problem :)23:43
hallynoh - what is?23:44
benediktthats the outbput from mkfs23:45
hallynwhat is the problem i meant?23:45
benediktsomething is corrupt23:45
benediktnot sure what yet23:46
hallynInteresting - i've not seen the like23:46
benediktim trying to create a disk on a different hard drive on the host machine23:46
benediktits new and completely unused so it might be corrupted, but id have thought mkfs would have shown that when i partitioned it23:47
benediktwhen formatting it stops on inode 42 and spits out kernel messages23:54
benediktcrated the disk with virt-manager and attached it with virt-manager this time23:54
benediktoh wait, it got to inode 63 now23:54
benediktseems to work much better when i create the vdisk on the same physical disk as the vm23:58
allquixoticI modified /etc/default/libvirt-bin to pass the --listen flag (I want libvirt to listen for SSL) but it won't... any ideas what I need to do differently?23:58
allquixoticit looks like Upstart does not read /etc/default/libvirt-bin23:59
allquixoticbecause libvirt is still started with `/usr/sbin/libvirtd -d'23:59
allquixoticno --listen23:59
