serfushey guys14:06
serfusi have ubuntu netbook edition installed and i want to convert to xubuntu14:06
serfusif i'll install XFCE-desktop would it do the trick?14:07
serfusor it's better to install xubuntu from scratch?14:07
vinnlHey serfus, you'll want to install xubuntu-desktop14:07
serfusvinnl, and then what will i need to delete if i am using the netbook edition?14:08
vinnlserfus, hmm, let me check if there's something on that14:09
vinnlI think this might do it:14:09
vinnl!purexfce14:09
ubottuIf you want to remove all !KDE and !Gnome packages and have a default !Xubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce »14:09

serfusokay great14:11
serfusi'll try to look if there's any remaining after that14:11
serfusthank's allot vinnl14:11
vinnlYeah that should do the trick, worst case you have a couple of packages installed you don't use :)14:11

adarofI #14:17
adarofHi #14:17
adarofHave a question for useage of gmrun....14:18
adarofsince I installed xubuntu-desktop (originally machine was a kubuntu), gmrun doesnt searches ~/bin anymore - but it was before14:18
adarofany hints on this?14:18
adarof~/bin is in bashrc and bash_profile, but I dont know which config files are read by gmrun :-/14:20
adarofanother question: I switched to gdm as login manager but it doesnt remember lastsessiontype ....14:24
TheSheepadarof: check ~/.dmrc14:26
TheSheepadarof: it saves it there, if it cannot write there or something, it won't rememeber14:27
adarofTheSheep, thanks - "default" is stored there and thelastmodtime seems to be okay14:29
adarofMaybe gdm cant store "xterm"? (which should be remembered)14:29
adarofsince -rw-r--r-- should be fine, right?14:30
adarofhas xfce any button for "switch sesseion" thus I get back to gdm and could login with another user?14:33
TheSheepadarof: you can logout14:36
adarofWell....14:38
adarofthats the 3rd problem, i have: Logout takes ages (3min or so) - if any application wasnt closed before... e.g. the korganizer reminder daemon or keepassx14:40
charlie-tcaadarof: any chance you are also seeing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/535105 in gmrun ?14:45
ubottuLaunchpad bug 535105 in gmrun (Ubuntu) "gmrun config for TermExec variable doesn't support command line options" [Undecided,New]14:45
adarofcharlie-tca, no, dont think so: I'm just refereing to the tab-completion of gmrun, which ignores my $PATH settings14:48
adarofand it was before I installed xubuntu-desktop thus im sure that its an xubuntu issue14:50
adarofbut I dont have any starting point14:50
adarofhow could I discover which is thecurrent $PATH of gmrun?14:50
charlie-tcahmm, I don't know gmrun at all. I just know some of the bugs14:51
charlie-tcaSorry, I can't really help with it.14:51
adarofcharlie-tca, ah, sorry - U asked me to confirm the bug?14:51
charlie-tca yes14:51
adarofGive me 5min14:52
charlie-tcasure. I will that long cleaning up the spilled coffee here14:52
adarofHm - I think I cant confirm15:08
adarofI have added a gmrunrc and specified TermExec = xfce4-terminal -x within15:09
adarofafterwards I could start gmrun and type xcalc hitting Ctrl-Enter and xcalc shows up (with an xfce4-terminal)15:10
adarofif I remove -x from gmrunrc it does not work -- thus the -x is honored?!15:10
adarofShould I comment the bug?15:11
charlie-tcaPlease do, if you don't mind.15:12
adaroffine with me15:12
charlie-tcaIt could be a different issue causing problems for the reporter. That's why we want to have at least two people with the same things before we confirm15:13
adarofdone15:17
adarofMaybe my testing procedure does not match his description15:18
charlie-tcaThanks for trying.15:21
charlie-tcaIt is possible. I tried, but I just can't seem to understand what to do with it.15:22
adarofgmrun seems to "use" a sh-environment -- how could I set $PATH for /bin/sh ?15:24
charlie-tcaadd it to path in .bashrc or /etc/bashrc using      PATH="$PATH:/bin/sh"15:29
adarofI have done that - and checked15:29
adarofdoesnt help15:29
charlie-tcaor in terminal using      set PATH=$PATH:/bin/sh15:29
adaroffor normal terminals it works ...its just gmrun, which doesnt use it15:30
charlie-tcaMaybe that is the actual problem then, not termexec?15:30
adarofDont think these issues are related15:31
charlie-tcaoh, I see15:31
charlie-tcaSo you got a new bug?15:31
adarofsince my prob is before hitting ctrl-enter15:31
charlie-tcaif sh won't append to path15:31
adarofI know its not a real bug since it was okay prior installing xubuntu-desktop package15:34
charlie-tcahmm, might be something Xubuntu does different then.15:35
charlie-tcadid you do a logout/login after changing the path?15:36
charlie-tca(in .bashrc or /etc/bashrc)15:36
adarofin bashrc it is defined since...well 10 years or so15:36
charlie-tcaoh15:36
charlie-tcawell, suggestions, suggestions....15:37
adarofand .... gmrun "knows" ~bin, if I start it from a terminal15:37
adarofthus it is related to xfce in some way15:37
charlie-tcaYou probably should file a bug on it, then. maybe the other gmrun reporter could verify yours.15:38
adarofUh....15:42
adarofon my laptop it still works...and the difference is that I havent changed kdm->gdm there15:42
charlie-tcaThen it is something in gdm causing it.Probably related to the gnome-session/xfce-session stuff15:44
adarofI just cross check15:45
adarofSwitched to gdm on laptop15:45
adarofand ...15:45
charlie-tcaheh15:45
adarofJup - it doesnt work15:45
adarofSo....15:45
adarofI need a gdm expert15:46
adarof:-)15:46
charlie-tcayup15:46
charlie-tcamr_pouit: you around today?15:46
AquinaGDM is default on Xubuntu, isn't it?15:46
vinnlPerhaps there's a #gdm? :)15:46
charlie-tcayes15:46
AquinaSo how can you switch to it, adarof?15:46
adarofAquina, dpkg-reconfigure gdm15:47
mr_pouitcharlie-tca: yes, but I'm not a gdm expert…15:47
charlie-tcaoh, well, thanks anyway then15:47
adarofThats cause I come from kubuntu (thus kde, thus kdm)15:48
AquinaI'm not a gdm expert as well but maybe the problem can easily be solved!? :)15:49
adarofAquina, Well? Switching back to kdm?15:49
adarofThink so - also due to my "gdm doesnt remember session type" problem15:50
adarofOr any other Idea?15:50
Aquinahm15:50
AquinaWhat do logs say? What exactly doen't work? Checked the config manualy?15:51
mr_pouitit sould remember the session type, in the ~/.dmrc file afaik15:51
AquinaI assume you wanted to reset things with dpkg-reconfigure, huh?15:51
adarofAquina, dpkg-reconfigure askes "which login manager should be used" and I could easily switch15:52
adarofNo log entries since no errors15:52
AquinaI see.15:52
Aquinaadarof... I've got it!15:52
AquinaAsk someone with gdm knowlege! :-)15:52
adarofIf I type pwd in gmrun I see in .xsession-errors15:53
adarofo_O15:53
Aquina:-/15:53

KE1HAcharlie-tca: good morning charlie17:24
charlie-tcaHello, KE1HA17:25
charlie-tcaHow are things today?17:25
KE1HABusy as always. You heard frm Cody lately?17:25
charlie-tcaNo, and usually won't on sunday17:25
KE1HAAhh ok.17:25
charlie-tcaBut I haven't forgotten. I will get him tomorrow17:26
KE1HAWe should probably propose a team meeting at some point in the not to distant future, lots of things to discuss.17:26
KE1HARegarding your Maverick question, I just zsync'd a bunch of images to 20100822 last night .. need to update all my VM's but can do xub first if you need something specific.17:30
charlie-tcagot it, thanks17:30
KE1HAOk17:31
KE1HAhey charlie-tca you may know about this, I ran across a neat too to automate pastebinit  from the command-line, you know about that one ?17:44
KE1HAtool*17:44
charlie-tcaUmmm, yes, but I usually forget about it17:45
adarofI found hints(?) regarding my long logout problem. This is my .xsession-errors AFTER logout: http://pastebin.ca/1922728 Does anyone understand something there?17:45
KE1HAyeah, it's pretty neat. I've doing copy & paste, but now can just do something like: lscpi | pastebinit and it' sends it to the pastebin and give me the link back.17:46
KE1HAadarof:  nope, that's beyond me, but looks related to: GLib-GObject-WARNING17:50
charlie-tcaI think there are too many kde apps refusing to accept the shutdown from Xfce17:50
charlie-tcaWhat version of ??? is that? 9.10?17:51
adarofcharlie-tca, any idea how I could make them accepting shutdown by xfce?17:51
charlie-tcaI don't know. I usually have to shutdown some of mine before hitting quit17:52
adarofcharlie-tca, aehm 10.4 4.6.1ubuntu317:52
charlie-tca** Message: xfsm-shutdown-helper.c:268: Using HAL to shutdown/reboot the computer.17:52
adarofcharlie-tca, ...otherwise would what happen?17:52
charlie-tca10.04 should not be using HAL17:53
charlie-tcaTakes too long if I leave them open17:53
adarofMy pastebin states that it uses HAL17:53
charlie-tcaBut, then again, I run the unstable versions17:53
charlie-tcaI know. That's why I pasted that line above17:53
charlie-tcaI wonder if Kubuntu is still using it, and it confused things?17:54
charlie-tcaadarof: you could try this:17:55
charlie-tcaIf there is a way to reproduce or people who frequently have this, they can set17:55
charlie-tcathe environment variable XFSM_VERBOSE=1, which will dump information about what17:55
charlie-tcathe session manager is doing, that would be very helpful.17:55
charlie-tcaThen file a bug for the slow shutdown issue in xfce4-session17:55
charlie-tcaand attach the log17:55
KE1HAhow do you set that variable charlie-tca ?17:56
adarofYeah - where could I set this? .profile and relogin? Logs would go to .xsession-errors?17:56
mr_pouit(xfce 4.6.x still uses hal btw. Only the future 4.8 doesn't)17:56
charlie-tcaset it in .bashrc, using   export XFSM_VERBOSE=1   on a line by itself. then logout and login.17:57
charlie-tcaIt should go to .xsessionerrors log17:57
charlie-tcaIt will give the developers a lot of info about what happened.17:58
KE1HAcool, tnx17:58

adarofmaybe .bashrc is the wrong place?18:03
charlie-tcaadarof: file a bug anyway, using   ubuntu-bug xfce4-session   and attach your /var/log/syslog to it along with the ~/.xsession-errors log18:04
charlie-tcaI do all my environment variable changes in .bashrc.18:05
charlie-tcamaybe got to do the variable on one line and export on the next?18:05
adarofI give the .profile a try18:06
adarofDont think it could be line related since if something interprets a bashrc file,it should speak bhasbrc ;-)18:07
charlie-tcaexample:  BROWSER=firefox  then   export BROWSER  makes firefox the default browser. To change my default browser, all I do is replace firefox name18:07
adarofcharlie-tca, yep...18:08
adarofcharlie-tca, okay using .profile does not output MORE, but at least the messages are formated in another way18:08
charlie-tcaIt might be we got the logs wrong, though. Unless you already had it enabled somehow.18:08

adarofBut it also happens with keepassx, Openoffice etc, pp18:14
charlie-tcaAquina: we are only alpha318:14
charlie-tcaadarof: it is still kdeinit4 doing it18:15
charlie-tcaAquina: sept 30 for rc, testing probably about sept 2618:15
adarofcharlie-tca, I will end all kde apps and pastebin the log with opened openoffice/firefox, k?18:15

charlie-tcano problem18:16
adarofU are right...no kde apps, no problem18:16
adarofI was sure that I verified this before18:16
charlie-tcaheh18:16
charlie-tcathat's okay. sometimes another set of eyes helps18:17
adarofcharlie-tca, why do you think its kde's fault? Line 18?18:17
Aquinathx chalie nice to know.18:17
charlie-tcaBecause kdeinit is causing it18:17
charlie-tcaIt should not run with xfce running18:17
AquinaYet satisfied with alpha3, Charlie? Are things running smoothly?18:18
adarofI think it is started if I start any kde app?18:18
charlie-tcaI just triage the bugs,. If I got this as a bug report, reading this log tells me it is kdeinit causing the issues18:18
charlie-tcaWell, it isn't playing right. KDE needs to fix it18:19
charlie-tcaAquina: alpha3 is pretty good, got a few issues, but they are not high on the serious bugs list18:19
adarofcharlie-tca, where do you see this? I just dont understand -- and would like to...thats for going to the kde people :-)18:19
adarofcharlie-tca, or is it my config fault that kdeinit is started?18:20
charlie-tcaadarof: because it is all the kde apps failing to shutdown18:20
charlie-tcaYou have xfce and kde initializing, when running the xfce session. If xfce is in control, then kdeinit should listen to it18:21
* charlie-tca doesn't think his reasons are sound, but the bug is in kde18:21
AquinaI like Vector image "wallpaper_draft_2" and photogaphy "tc_photo_sky_2", by the way.18:21
charlie-tcaAquina: little things, like if you open a terminal, and look at preferences, when you close preferences, it shuts down the terminal too18:22

KE1HAcharlie-tca:  I have another workstation not doing allot at the moment, may set that up specifically for kernel / driver testing.19:19
charlie-tcaIt is okay. There are many Ubuntu users also running maverick. Kernel and driver issues usually affect all of us19:20
charlie-tcaIn fact, I don't have the failure. But many do have it.19:21
KE1HAMy thing is, with nVdia, I picked mainstream Cards (Mostly EVGA and BFG), and it seems to be the odd card MFG's that have allot of issues.19:22
KE1HAand ATI, oh boy, that's a handfull too.19:22

charlie-tcaI have had vbox installed since alpha1, memory fails me... ;-)19:57
KE1HAdont know m8 was jsut tresitng the VBOX setup and it failed deps on libcurl319:58
charlie-tcaWell, that might be right, since VBox usually won't come out witht he new version until the release.19:59

SaltI have a really old computer. Previously it ran Windows XP. The sound originally worked, but then it didn't, I forget what happened (It's a VIA 8235 sound card, I think). Later I installed Xubuntu, which I'm using now; I think that the problem had something to do with the sound card drivers, so I looked for the driver, but the VIA website doesn't have the driver for Linux, apparently, and the next most promising thing I found, ALSA, s23:39
SaltIs there an easier way to install the driver for my sound card?23:39
