MalfermitaKodoHi... I am trying to get a webcam to function with Xubuntu01:00
David-AMalfermitaKodo: I dont think I can help, but if you tell what webcam, what computer, and shortly what you have tried and how it fails, maybe a bell rings somewhere.01:09
MalfermitaKodoDavid-A: I wanted but was distracted by a path to google... which was futile...01:10
MalfermitaKodoIt is an antedeluvian Logitech webcam...01:10
MalfermitaKodoapparently a quickcam Messenger if lsusb is trusted01:10

pleia2yep, I use it all the time :)06:37
profus2because its designed for gnome desktop environment06:37
pleia2it runs fine06:38
profus2how does this interact?06:38
pleia2interact?06:38
profus2mmh06:38
profus2i am not a native speaker06:38
pleia2I've never used it in Gnome, so I don't know how it's supposed to06:38
=== Guest42264 is now known as crazygir
profus2no, the basic question is: will a program designed for gnome dektop run automatically in an xfce environment?06:39
pleia2yes06:39
well_laid_lawngnome is gtk based and so is xfce06:40
well_laid_lawn!gtk06:40
ubottuGTK is the !GIMP toolkit, which forms the base of !GNOME and is used by many applications to provide a !GUI06:40
profus2ok, thx for the explanation06:41
well_laid_lawnnp :]06:41
profus2one more question about f-spot: does importing files mean that f-spot will copy files from one place to another or will it just index the files?06:42
profus2i have dual boot installation and photo files should not be touched where there are now06:43
well_laid_lawnI doubt it would move them - prob just makes a database of them06:43
profus2is thanking everybody for their help and have a nice day :-)06:48

ubottuRodrigo: Hi! Welcome to #xubuntu! Feel free to ask questions and help people out. The channel guidelines are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines . Enjoy your stay!14:36
Rodrigoi installed xubuntu on my PC: Pentium 3 900mhz 256mb14:48
Rodrigowith nvidia geforce 2 mx14:49
Rodrigobut it's not very fluent :s14:49
Sysinothing is very fluent on that kinda machine, but you could try lubuntu-desktop14:50
Sysi!lubuntu14:50
ubottulubuntu is a project to create a derivative of Ubuntu using the LXDE desktop environment. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu14:50
Rodrigoah cool14:50
Rodrigothat's a cool project!14:57
Rodrigoi'm gonna check this out but what if it was the nvidia driver?15:14
Sysii think it's about ram15:14
Sysiif graphics driver is bad, it's *very* slow or no graphics at all15:16
Rodrigoyeah maybe, i'm gonna download lubuntu15:16
Rodrigoi hope it's stable15:16
Sysijust install lubuntu-desktop15:16
TheSheepas in, you can see the windows being drawn15:16

jstHey, guys.  How come Ubuntu and Kubuntu have 10.04.1, but Xubuntu doesn't? :)17:07
Pres-Gasjst, I am using Xubu and byobu is saying 10.04.1...17:13
Pres-Gasjst, try this command from a terminal: lsb_release -a17:14
charlie-tcajst: because Xubuntu is not an official distribution by canonical.17:14
charlie-tcaHowever, upgrading 10.04 with all the updates is all 10.04.1 is. It is the cd with those updates included.17:14
Sysisince what we haven't been official?17:16
Pres-GasAhhh...Install media17:19
jstDescription:    Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS17:20
jstYeah, just seems like there'd be a lot less downloading if I could download 10.04.1 instead of 10.04 and updating for minutes/hours on some of these slower machines. :)17:20
charlie-tcaWe have always been an unsupported dirivative17:23
charlie-tcaMy mistake, we are an official, unsupported distribution17:23
* charlie-tca thinks ENGLISH got in the way17:23
Sysiah17:24
* Pres-Gas runs "sudo aptitude install language-support-en" on charlie-tca17:27
charlie-tcaThanks17:27
Pres-Gasde nada, charlie-tca17:28
Pres-Gas:P17:28
charlie-tcaanyway, what I said still applies. We don't get updated cd images of 10.0417:29
zerothis'm having a problems with _some_ OpenGL apps crashing (that did not before). I'm on xubuntu karmic (because later versions do not work), using intel 2.4 drivers (because later versions...). <http://pastebin.com/T1dd68v7>21:17
KE1HAzerothis:  are you using the i915 BIOS hack ? the i855 has lots fo trouble,s but there's several work arounds for it: http://915resolution.mango-lang.org/21:20
zerothisI have a Compaq Presario M2000us if that matters. not heard of that hack until now, thank you. is it possible to have Xserver 6.8.2 on my system (currently have 1.6.5)? wait, it says the hack will be incorporated in an upcoming xorg release? that was in 2007. maybe I do have it. perhaps I should use the 855 hack its based on (if I'm not?)?21:30
KE1HAzerothis:  There's several problems with i855, mostly do do with Intel outsourcing a series of chipsets, and it was a driver restriction at one point. Here's another i855 resouce that solves some of the initial problems: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes21:41
KE1HAzerothis:  the i915 hack / module is in the latest Kernels, and is compatible with the latest version of X-Org. Still, some users needed to enact work arounds at install to get the final product installed.21:43
zerothisI tried the freezes fix already, ppa:glasen/intel-driver never connects for me, so I can't download from it21:44
KE1HAzerothis:  Also, I've found that using the ALT-ISO, which uses the ncurses debian-install v.s. the Ubiquity Installs also gets around the installation freezes.21:45
zerothisstrangely, both the lucid DESKTOP and ALT CDs froze for lucid. I put the drive in a desktop and used unetbootin to successfully make a bootable installation. but it wouldn't boot on my laptop, froze after the "xubuntu" logo. jaunty froze as well with this method, only intrepid and karmic would boot21:49
zerothisMaverick kernel? havn't tried that yet. are 855 cards blacklisted in Maverick's xorg? Proprietary drivers for intel now?21:52
KE1HAzerothis:  Im not sure about maverick. You could also try using no acpi and i915=nomodet=0 with the ALT ISO21:53
