ubot2Launchpad bug 625518 in gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) (and 2 other projects) "Add a keyboard shortcut by default for take screenshot of a selection" (affects: 2) (heat: 12)" [Wishlist,Confirmed]00:53
kedarmIt seems that adding "custom keyboard shortcut" does not work when "Command" is something like "gnome-screenshot -a" :((00:54

Brackenn_hello?01:55
Brackenn_Is anyone here that can help me?01:56
eightballdvd play back help?03:53
pseudosmartI was wondering if someone could just post the contents of their xorg.conf file, mine is blank, and I'd like to rebuild it04:54
stlsaintpseudosmart: your system should build one for you04:55
pseudosmartthat's what I thought, but when I go to gedit xorg.conf, the file is blank04:56
stlsaintevery xorg will be different with different resolution settings and what not04:56
stlsaintpseudosmart: that probably means that ubuntu is not using it...what release are you using?04:56
pseudosmart10.0404:56
pseudosmartmy screen is cut off on the bottom and right, no matter what resolution I try, and I can't figure it out04:57
pseudosmartI'm using a Sony Vaio VPCF115FM, if that makes a difference04:57
pseudosmartI'm not sure what graphics card I have, but I guess whatever it is, that's the problem04:57
pseudosmartbut I just can't figure it out04:58
pseudosmartI thought maybe if I could at least have an xorg.conf file to start out with, I could play with it, and maybe figure it out.04:58
pseudosmartwhatever the default NVIDIA drivers are that come with Ubuntu, they obviously don't work on my machine04:59
stlsaintpseudosmart: run in terminal: lspci | grep VGA05:01
pseudosmartthis is the output from that05:01
pseudosmart01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 0a29 (rev a2)05:01
stlsaintpseudosmart: you have nvidia card05:02
pseudosmartyep05:02
pseudosmarta 330M I think, but I'm not sure05:03
stlsaintpseudosmart: here is mine for reference since you asked: http://pastebin.com/HpAiRPX805:04
brackenn_hello?05:55
brackenn_is anybody here?05:56
aveilleux!ask |bracken_05:56
ubot2bracken_: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)05:56
aveilleuxbrackenn_*05:56
brackenn_Okay.05:56
aveilleuxWell, brackenn_? What's up?05:59
brackenn_I tried to change my password, and ended up making my .ICEauthority file get lost, and now I cant log into my profile. if I reboot in recovery mode, drop to root shell prompt, log in as my user, and do a 'sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop' will that over rite and or screw up any of my files and programs?06:01
aveilleuxbrackenn_: It shouldn't; that should only install the programs that are missing (which there aren't any).06:03
aveilleuxbrackenn_: What you want to do is sudo dpkg --reconfigure -a06:03
brackenn_what will sudo dpkg --reconfigure -a do?06:04
aveilleuxbrackenn_: It'll go through all of your installed packages and reconfigure them. Re-installing ubuntu-desktop won't solve your problem; reconfiguring it (hopefully) will06:04
aveilleuxbrackenn_: Apparently simply deleting the .ICEauthority file should solve most problems06:09
brackenn_the other users on my system are not having a problem, just my profile is messed up. I've tried to 'chown user:user /home/user/.ICEauthority' as sugested by some folks on the forums, but that comes back with file does not exist. will what you're sudgesting not affect the other user profiles?06:09
aveilleuxbrackenn_: It will not affect the other accounts, since it's just /your/ .ICEauthority file06:11
brackenn_Okay. Just try to delete it eh? what does that command look like?06:13
aveilleuxbrackenn_: Also, an easier way to write your home dir is just the tilde (~)06:13
aveilleuxbrackenn_: rm ~/.ICEauthority06:13
brackenn_Can that be done from the root directory?06:14
aveilleuxbrackenn_: Oh, right. Root login. Instead of the tilde, put /home/username06:15
brackenn_so...rm /home/william/.ICEauthority ?06:17
aveilleuxbrackenn_: Yes, that command looks correct06:18
brackenn_Trying it now.06:18
brackenn_come back with rm:cannot remove ...no such file.06:19
aveilleuxbrackenn_: Can you pastebin the output of ls -a /home/william/ for me please? http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/06:21
brackenn_I don't know how to do that from root.06:22
aveilleuxUm, let's see...06:22
aveilleuxCan you SSH into the target system from your current one?06:23
brackenn_How bout I just type it in here? it is just about 4 files.06:23
aveilleuxbrackenn_: Only four files? New install?06:24
brackenn_No, a couple of years old. I took a pix with my phone. I can e-mail it to ya?06:25
aveilleuxbrackenn_: Can you upload it to an imagehost?06:26
brackenn_there is .   .private  .ecryptfs   README.txt   ..     .cache   Access-Your-Private-Data.desktop06:28
aveilleuxbrackenn_: ...You're missing quite a few files there. What distro is this?06:29
brackenn_9.1006:29
aveilleuxbrackenn_: Is this running as a CLI system?06:30
brackenn_I don't know what that is.06:31
aveilleuxbrackenn_: Command-line06:31
brackenn_But I did a list of one of the other users, and i see what you mean.06:32
aveilleuxbrackenn_: What were you doing when this happened?06:32
brackenn_No. Up untill i tried to change my password, it was a mormal desktop gui.06:32
brackenn_changing my password.06:33
brackenn_I administered users, (me) and reset my password.06:33
aveilleuxbrackenn_: As in, the GUI interface? Hm...06:33
brackenn_Yes.06:34
brackenn_And then the next time I tried to log in.... this.06:34
[V13]AxelQuick question guys. Besides adding a period to the beginning of the folder, what is a way to hide a folder? I cannot rename these folders to anything, or I'll have to manually edit a WHOLE LOT of configuration options. Is there not a simple "Hide" option? Or a chmod option?06:35
aveilleuxWho put that button there06:35
aveilleux[V13]Axel: No.06:36
[V13]Axel... Seriously?06:36
aveilleux[V13]Axel: You can make the file nonreadable by other users, but you cannot hide it without adding a period to the front. Yes, seriously.06:36
aveilleuxbrackenn_: try resetting the account password with the Terminal command passwd william06:37
brackenn_ca n i do it in root? where I am now?06:38
[V13]AxelWell, it's as simple as this. I have a folder where all of the customizations I installed on a friends computer for him are. Some of the files in those folders are relied upon by many of the tweaks used. In order to rename the folders to .tweaks, I'd have to go back and re-configure all of the tweaks. ;_;06:38
aveilleux[V13]Axel: Tell him not to screw with it? The best defense against user error is user education06:38
[V13]AxelWell, he isn't the only one who uses the computer.06:39
aveilleux[V13]Axel: Then tell *them* not to mess with it06:39
[V13]AxelI'll just add an emblem to the folders' icons that conveys, "DO NOT OPEN," with an image.06:39
aveilleux[V13]Axel: A better idea would be to hide it... What tweaks require a folder in the home dir?06:40
[V13]AxelIt's not in the home dir. It's in Downloads. -_-;;06:41
[V13]AxelIf I had known there wasn't a way to hide it *easily*, I would have put them somewhere.06:41
[V13]AxelI'll figure something out. Thanks, aveilleux.06:42
aveilleux[V13]Axel: In any case. What kind of tweaks even require that kind of thing?06:42
aveilleux[V13]Axel: Most if not all tweaks I can think of are simple edits to a text file somewhere06:42
[V13]AxelIt's more like... GUI, GUI, GUI. I don't feel like going back through and changing all those options again. I have it set up to look a lot like Windows 7, so the users will be a little more used to the interface. There are background images, etc, that will be broken if I rename the folders.06:43
aveilleux[V13]Axel: That doesn't make any sense. Background images should be dropped into /usr/share/....... nevermind he left.06:45
hobgoblinhappens a lot :)06:46
hobgoblinmorning aveilleux06:46
aveilleuxFor the record, the way [V13]Axel was talking about GUI tweaks is the wrong way of going about it. Background images should be dropped into /user/share/backgrounds/, and all Metacity themes are installed through the System > Preferences > Appearance applet. The theme gets installed, and you can delete the original .theme file06:46
brackenn_Hey, changing the password made no change06:46
aveilleuxbrackenn_: Hm... One last question. Is deleting the user and re-creating it out of the question?06:47
aveilleuxMorning hobgoblin06:47
brackenn_no, but I'd like to try as much as i can to recover it. I got a lot of stuff in there.06:48
aveilleuxbrackenn_: The ls -a showed that most of the stuff you want to recover is gone.06:48
brackenn_what happened?06:49
brackenn_how could changinf the password do so much damage?06:51
aveilleuxbrackenn_: I honestly don't know. Best you can do is file a bug with gnome-system-tools ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-system-tools ) and re-create the user dir.06:52
hobgoblinwhat happened?06:52
brackenn_I changed my password and it blew away my profile. aparently.06:54
aveilleuxhobgoblin: After using users-admin, his .ICEauthority file got removed. We also dicovered that his files were trashed as well.06:54
brackenn_how do i list all users from root?06:54
aveilleuxbrackenn_: cat /etc/passwd |grep /home06:55
hobgoblinfiles got trashed? how odd06:55
aveilleuxhobgoblin: I know... I really don't know what users-admin could have done to do that06:56
brackenn_Okay, what am I looking at?06:56
aveilleuxbrackenn_: You should be looking at all of the users who have home dirs in /home (ie. real users, not system users). It'll output a bunch of information. The one you care about is the very first field, which is the username06:58
brackenn_okay.06:58
aveilleuxbrackenn_: Something else you can try is cat /etc/passwd | grep /home | cut -f1 -d':'06:59
* aveilleux writes that command down for future reference07:00
brackenn_syslog, saned,william,margaret,antonia,ect...ect.07:00
brackenn_what does that do?07:04
brackenn_l07:08
hobgoblinwere the files you are after in an encrypted drive?07:09
brackenn_I think somehow, yes. because it was asking over a nd over for the encryption passphraise.07:11
brackenn_I don't reme ber encrypting anything.07:11
brackenn_I remeber something in the forums about encryption being tangled up with shis.07:13
hobgoblinsuggests you are "there is .   .private  .ecryptfs   README.txt   ..     .cache   Access-Your-Private-Data.desktop"07:15
hobgoblinmight be all tangled up in there07:16
hobgoblinnot ever used encrypted drive to know what would normally be visible and what would not be - if nothing is normally visible then I would assume that ls -al would not see the data07:17
brackenn_a forum post pointed to===>https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EncryptedPrivateDirectory#How07:17
aveilleuxbrackenn_: Sorry for not responding. The command cat /etc/passwd | grep /home | cut -f1 -d':' should output just the usernames of all the users07:19
brackenn_if i follow the instructions there under recovering your data manualy, or How to Remove an Encrypted Private Directory Setup...07:20
hobgoblinbrackenn_: if that is the case - boot with a livecd - use the "Recovering Your Data Manually" bit - also http://www.kaijanmaki.net/2009/10/26/recovering-files-from-ecryptfs-encrypted-home/07:20
hobgoblinyou can but try - but as I said - I do not know if encrypting home hides 'everything'07:20

sebsebsebHi23:27
aveilleuxHello sebsebseb23:27
aveilleux!ask |sebsebseb23:28
ubot2sebsebseb: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)23:28
sebsebsebaveilleux: uh yeah, but23:29
sebsebsebaveilleux: I am no newbie and so on, so !ask isn't really a factoid for me23:29
aveilleuxsebsebseb: #ubuntu-beginners-team is the offtopic channel23:29
sebsebsebaveilleux: sure, but saying hi in here, is hardly off topic23:30
aveilleuxsebsebseb: This channel gets logged at irclogs.ubuntu.com, extraneous conversation clogs up the logs23:30
* pedro3005 beeps23:31
sebsebsebaveilleux: I can name at least one Ubuntu channel, where probably still quite a lot of off topic,  still gets logged,  so whatever to that23:31
sebsebsebaveilleux: oh wait at  least two since #ubuntu23:32
aveilleuxsebsebseb: One example doesn't set the rule. I periodically search through the logs, looking for solutions that were mentioned in the channel so I can refer to them if someone has a duplicate problem. Offtopic conversation hinders that process.23:33
sebsebsebaveilleux: well your actsually being off topic by saying this stuff to me23:34
sebsebsebin here23:34
aveilleuxsebsebseb: You're assuming I don't want to log this conversation for future reference ;-)23:34
sebsebsebaveilleux: I used to be like you, and care a lot about logs, not so much now23:35
aveilleuxsebsebseb: Have fun23:35
sebsebsebaveilleux: also useually the most interesting logs to go back to, turn out to be ones where interesting off topic was done, in my experience.  Half joking, but maybe when your more experienced with Ubuntu, and they are wanting new ops, you should apply :D.  Anyway have fun with Ubuntu.23:37
aveilleuxsebsebseb: That's what personal logs are for23:37
sebsebseb!ot | aveilleux sebsebseb23:38
ubot2aveilleux sebsebseb: #ubuntu is the Ubuntu support channel, for all Ubuntu-related support questions. Please use #ubuntu-offtopic for other topics (though our !guidelines apply there too). Thanks!23:38

aveilleuxsebsebseb: In any case, it still applies.23:38
zkriesseHehe23:38
zkriesseWaz up23:39
sebsebsebzkriesse: I am enjoying this kind of,  you know me on here, how I have used Ubuntu channels quite a lot,   since 2008.   Anyway so I just re join here, and this aveilleux starts saying I am off topic since I put Hi in here23:39
zkriesseHe23:40
zkriessesebsebseb: Haven't seen ya around in a while23:40
sebsebsebzkriesse: could be, because I am not as active as I used to be in Ubuntu channels by a long way, since no longer having pshycial installs of the distro, only development vm trying now for me,  I'll still help newbies out sometimes with it though.23:41
sebsebsebso yep re joined here23:41
aveilleuxsebsebseb: Not because you said "hi"; Lots of people come in with "Hello?" and etc. so I assumed you were in need of support. Hence the !ask.23:42
zkriesseNice23:42
inspectorgI am having a problem autostarting XBMC and then being able to use the remote controller. Anyone familiar with that probelm?23:42
sebsebsebzkriesse: oh yeah and i'll have to try Unity from a Live CD to try it23:42
zkriesseMake sure ya say hi to paultag sebsebseb23:42
sebsebsebWho's that?23:42
inspectorgHi Paul.23:42
pedro3005the single most awesome person in the channel, that is!23:43
pedro3005:P23:43
sebsebsebaveilleux: eh well nevermind, I think we both got a sort of laugh, out of the whole thing :D23:43
zkriessepedro3005: Next to bodhi23:43
inspectorgI added XBMC to the startup applications. But when I use the remote nothing happens.23:43
sebsebsebI don't see someone called paultag in the nick list23:43
inspectorgLet me describe what I have done and what happens.23:43
pedro3005then you need glasses23:44
sebsebseboh I do23:44
sebsebsebyeah hes towards the top23:44
sebsebsebsince voiced23:44
zkriesseLol23:44
sebsebsebzkriesse: anyway you did acstauly see me around quite recently, when we talked in that fan boy channel,  you know the one I mean :D23:45
inspectorgIf I do not auto start xbmc and run "service lirc restart" then when I start XBM manually  the remote works.23:45
sebsebsebzkriesse: well the blog itself is more of a fan boy thing, than the IRC channel by a long way, but yeah23:46
pedro3005inspectorg, you could set it up to automatically run that, though that's sort of a workaround23:46
inspectorgSo I put a command "sleep 15" and "service lirc start" in /etc/rc.local, but then when XBMC auto starts the remote still doesn't work.23:47
inspectorgBut when I manually start xbmc the remote works.23:47
inspectorgWhen I put both commands in /etc/rc.local  xbmc does not start.23:48
pedro3005I don't think you need sleep23:49
inspectorgI tried just "xbmc", "exec xbmc", xbmc-standalone, exec xbmc-standalone, none of them start xbmc.23:50
inspectorgI might not need the sleep, but I wouldn't think it would hurt or do you.23:50
pedro3005probably not23:51
inspectorgSo to recap, how can I get xbmc to auto start in /etc/rc.local, or is there a better place?23:52
pedro3005inspectorg, did you remember to set it as executable?23:52
sebsebsebHi pedro300523:52
inspectorgI don't know what that means.23:52
pedro3005inspectorg, sudo chmod +x /etc/rc.local23:53
inspectorgWell I would think that /etc/rc.local is executable since the "service lirc start" seems to work.23:54
inspectorgBut the xbmc command does not.23:55
pedro3005inspectorg, doesn't it already start automatically?23:55
pedro3005you could try changing that to restart23:55
pedro3005hi sebsebseb23:55
inspectorgWhen xbmc was starting automaticly, the lirc was not.23:57
inspectorgI don't understand why I have to start lirc anyway, since I would think that it would start automaticly.23:57
inspectorgI tried put the service lirc start command in the startup applications but it did nothing.23:58
inspectorgI can auto start one or the other but not both.23:58
inspectorgIs it a matter of timing or run levels, I don't know.23:59
