Gibby_2ComradeHaz`: Nope00:01
ComradeHaz`Actually having some trouble getting virtual box to install correctly00:01
ComradeHaz`not sure what I've done since I had it on here last time :/00:01
Gibby_2Make sure you get it from here http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads00:05
Zinn[www.virtualbox.org] Linux_Downloads - VirtualBox00:05
Pwencould anyone tell me what the best way would be to run arbitrary commands on startup?00:12
Pwenjust with respect to linux, not mythtv00:12
ComradeHaz`uh, nope Gibby_2, it's packaged for debian00:12
ComradeHaz`problem was a PEBKAC00:12
ComradeHaz`Pwen, hard to know but you probably want to look into crontabs.00:13
Gibby_2ComradeHaz`: You don't get all the options if you don't download from virtualbox.org00:21
Zinn[virtualbox.org] VirtualBox00:21
ComradeHaz`Gibby_2, I prefer to use packages whenever possible00:22
ComradeHaz`just downloading ubuntu 32 bit00:22
ComradeHaz`doesn't like 64bit00:22
Gibby_2that is a package00:26
ComradeHaz`Sorry, I meant repo package00:29
Gibby_2ok, due to licensing you don't get the full version of it00:37
ComradeHaz`Oh, yeah, I'm getting the ose01:00
ComradeHaz`which is fine.01:01
ComradeHaz`So. Nearly installed ubuntu 10.04.01:03
ComradeHaz`Is there anything I need to do before attempting to follow your guide again?/.01:03
PwenComradeHaz`: thanks ^_^01:05
Gibby_2nope01:05
Gibby_2just stop at the DHCP part01:05
ComradeHaz`Aye, I was going to ask how I handle that.01:05
Gibby_2Pwen: cron is not for running commands at start up01:05
ComradeHaz`I was interpreting his question somewhat...01:06
Gibby_2Pwen: Do you want the commands to run at start up even if not logged in? Do you want them to run every startup?01:07
ComradeHaz`Gibby_2, is there a way to stop ubuntu starting gnome at startup and instead just dropping me at tty1?01:17
Gibby_2yep01:18
Gibby_21 sec01:18
Gibby_2i use webmin, but let me find the command for it01:18
ComradeHaz`alost tempted to uninstall x and gnome actually.01:19
Gibby_2update-rc.d gdm remove01:21
Gibby_2that should it01:21
ComradeHaz`hmm, what kind of network interface do I want the virtual box to create for the Ubuntu box?01:22
ComradeHaz`teh virtual one, I mean of course.01:23
Gibby_2bridged01:23
PwenGibby_2: yeah, I want to have a few things start in the background (vncserver on :1, virtualbox, etc)01:38
Gibby_2Pwen: I use webmin for that kind of start and the right startup scripts01:39
Pwenhmmm webmin, I had never thought of it01:40
PwenI always try to do things the hard way :P01:41
Gibby_2I have Webmin on every one of my NIX boxes01:43
tt33l3rIt's on there somewhere...01:51
tt33l3rOops, sorry01:51
ComradeHaz`Right.01:52
ComradeHaz`Gibby, it's now downlaoding and installing with ltsp01:53
ComradeHaz`I think I should probably call it a night01:53
ComradeHaz`This looks like it could take a while.01:55
ComradeHaz`Oooh, maybe not.01:55
ComradeHaz`So, Gibby_2, how do you suggest we deal with DHCP?01:57
PwenGibby_2: how would I configure a custom startup script/commands with webmin?01:58
PwenGibby_2: I just found the 'create startup and shutdown action' link, nevermind me ... ;p01:59
ComradeHaz`A'ight, off to bed. Catch you tomorrow hopefully Gibby. And thanks for your help so far02:05
ComradeHaz`Only wish I'd thought of sticking a virtual machine on earlier!02:05
ComradeHaz`nn all!02:06
Gibby_2NP, I will be on most of the day tomorrow02:08
wsuetholz I run a mixed mythbuntu backend / LinHes(Knoppmyth) frontends.  Recently I updated the frontends, and they got 0.23.1.  I've enabled the autobuilds PPA for 0.23.1 in mythbuntu, but there doesn't seem to be mythtv-backend packages, just frontend and themes.  I run lucid i386.05:49
=== sebrock_ is now known as sebrock
wsuetholzAccording to the launchpad build log, the packages were built, but I don't see how to retrieve them.  They don't seem to be publicly accessible.06:21
tgm4883wsuetholz, the packages are available and you should be able to do an apt-get update and apt-get upgrade to get them. I can see them available here https://edge.launchpad.net/~mythbuntu/+archive/0.23.1/+packages07:17

GibbyHow do I get a list of what Zinn will do?17:52
ZinnHi Gibby, something I can help you with today?  I am a bot, use !help to see what I can do.17:52
ComradeHaz`Having a bit of trouble with your guide :)17:52
Gibbywhere you at?17:52
ComradeHaz`Booted, configuring.17:52
ComradeHaz`specifically, # dpkg -i mythbuntu-repos.deb then # dpkg-reconfigure mythbuntu-repos.deb17:53
ComradeHaz`First, lets clarify something though. The mounting and the chrooting. That should be done on my Ubuntu 'server' right?17:54
Gibbyyes after the ltsp-server-build17:55
Gibbydid you download mythbuntu-repos.deb first?17:55
ComradeHaz`Yes, the install appears to work.17:55
ComradeHaz`Let me pastebin you.17:55
ComradeHaz`http://paste.ubuntu.com/485912/17:56
Zinn[paste.ubuntu.com] Ubuntu Pastebin17:56
Gibbyoops try dpkg-reconfigure mythbuntu-repos18:00
ComradeHaz`Oh God!18:02
ComradeHaz`lol18:02
ComradeHaz`Of course, I'm not sure who's teh bigger muppet!18:03
ComradeHaz`You making the typo or me blindly following it18:03
ComradeHaz`There's another one by the way.18:03
ComradeHaz`Switch the the image envirnment: <------ your command there is missing a couple of characters.18:04
Gibbyahh18:06
Gibbywhat is it missing?18:08
ComradeHaz`Uh, either just a 6 or 6/proc18:10
ComradeHaz`I think I guessed and since it seems to be wroking I guess I got lucky :D18:11
GibbyThis line should work sudo mount -o bind /proc /opt/ltsp/i386/proc/18:12
Gibbydid you do anything with DHCP?18:12
ComradeHaz`yup18:12
ComradeHaz`figured it out.18:12
ComradeHaz`It might be worth describing how one should modify an existing dhcp config to make it work18:13
ComradeHaz`Why does it recommend password protecting MythWeb?18:14
GibbyIn case you open it to the internet18:22
GibbyI don't so I didnt' put a password18:22
ComradeHaz`when I hit my mythbox's IP address with a browser I just get a totally blank page...18:29
ComradeHaz`Further, even though I have configured a password it doesn't ask for one18:29
ComradeHaz`Also, your auto-login text is messed up.18:30
ComradeHaz`some HTML has slipped in ;)18:30
GibbyI noticed18:31
Gibbydid you boot a network client yet?18:31
ComradeHaz`Yeah18:33
ComradeHaz`That's why I'm configuring it :)18:33
Gibbyand you pointed to that IP right?18:33
ComradeHaz`Yes.18:34
ComradeHaz`It redirects to /mythtv18:34
ComradeHaz`but it's blank18:34
Gibbytry it on the client, do localhost18:34
ComradeHaz`Also, the machines hostname is it's mac address despite definig one on teh dhcp server.18:35
ComradeHaz`Can I change that?18:35
Gibbyyou can try, do it on the client while it is booted18:37
ComradeHaz`So, how much like a standalone system will this machine be?18:38
ComradeHaz`Will it remember all teh videos it's imported?18:38
ComradeHaz`Will browser history be saved etc etc?18:39
Gibbyyep18:39
Gibbyeverything18:39
Gibbyit is like a thin client18:39
ComradeHaz`Hmmm18:39
ComradeHaz`I think I am doing something wrong18:39
ComradeHaz`what directory should I have chrooted to?18:40
Gibbydid you run the backend configuration on the network booted image18:40
Gibby/opt/ltsp/i3818:40
Gibby618:40
ComradeHaz`and should the hostname at my prompt change?18:42
Gibbynope18:42
ComradeHaz`Will things I install while chrooted happen live on the client?18:43
Gibbyno18:44
Gibbynot until you exit and update the image18:44
ComradeHaz`OK, so why am I doing this stuff using chroot rather than just booting and doing it on the client?18:45
ComradeHaz`Because this effects the global image rather than just one machine?18:45
Gibbyb/c if you do in with chroot onthe image it will change it for all clients you boot to that image, if you do it on the client you booted the image too, it will saved for that client only18:45
ComradeHaz`OK, looks like I am slowly behinning to understand!18:47
ComradeHaz`So, once the client is booted, is there any appreciable resource requirements on the 'server'?18:48
Gibbyjust network18:50
ComradeHaz`Oh?18:50
ComradeHaz`Mythweb also blank page from localhost18:57
Gibbydid you run the mythbackend setup?18:58
ComradeHaz`Ah, possibly not18:59
ComradeHaz`gah, odd.18:59
ComradeHaz`Terminal show no hostname now and there's no bash completion :/19:00
ComradeHaz`Oh. Not running bash!19:02
ComradeHaz`wtf :D19:02
ComradeHaz`gah19:04
Gibbywho are you logged in as?19:06
ComradeHaz`It has created and booted into user account 'mythtv' but that has no password (that I know of) set and it won't let me su to the account I created when I set up the machine19:06
Gibbyahh opps, there is no shell for mythtv by default19:07
ComradeHaz`Ah19:07
ComradeHaz`OK, in. (as me)19:07
ComradeHaz`well, maybe noty a bad thing19:07
ComradeHaz`what is mythtv's password set as?19:08
ComradeHaz`Something random?19:08
ComradeHaz`Or shiuld I change it?19:08
Gibbyidk19:10
ComradeHaz`How do I run the backend conf then?19:13
Gibbygo to system/administration19:14
GibbyMythTV Backend Setup19:14
ComradeHaz`Hmm19:24
ComradeHaz`I appear to have broken something19:24
ComradeHaz`It won't boot properly19:25
ComradeHaz`hmm, "Could not reliably determine fully qualified domain name"19:25
Gibbyuhhhh19:30
Gibbygo fix the image19:30
ComradeHaz`Meh, it booted ion second attempt19:33
ComradeHaz`but hostname wasn't saved :/19:33
ComradeHaz`Hmm. can't see backend19:37
ComradeHaz`Beginning to wonder if it's installed.19:37
Gibbyrun the mythbackend steup19:37
ComradeHaz`there is no mythbacked setup19:38
Gibbyhmmmm19:38
ComradeHaz`Gah19:38
Gibbydid yo uinstall it on the image?19:38
ComradeHaz`install it on? No.19:38
ComradeHaz`It's OK, can install it now I guess19:38
ComradeHaz`but things fdon't feel right19:38
Gibbyyes install it now19:39
ComradeHaz`no bash completion and this bloody hostname not working make it feel all broken19:39
Gibbywhat is output of cat /etc/passwd|grep mythtv on the network booted client?19:39
ComradeHaz`Uh, biab dude. Dinner.19:40
ComradeHaz`Gah, backend setup has got stuck at 'deleting UPnP client' :/20:15
ComradeHaz`[19:39:43] <Gibby> what is output of cat /etc/passwd|grep mythtv on the network booted client? <---- mythtv:x103:105::/home/mythtv:/bin/sh20:16
ComradeHaz`*x:103:20:17
ComradeHaz`MythTV Setup terminal is just a list of errors20:18
ComradeHaz`FFS20:18
ComradeHaz`wtf is wrong with this bloody thing?! :?20:18
* ComradeHaz` is starting to get annoyed20:18
ComradeHaz`Grr. It seems to be having trouble committing any changes20:24
ComradeHaz`So if I change things in control centre and then press apply, it just hangs until I kill the control centre window20:24
ComradeHaz`needless to say when I go back to control centre teh changes remain uncommitted.20:24
Gibbyhmm sounds like the install  got correupt20:27
ComradeHaz`It's thoughroughly pissed me off to be honest.20:27
ComradeHaz`I have far too much to do for this to take up this much time to configure.20:27
Gibbyrebuild the image, then boot the client and do all the installs from it20:35
ComradeHaz`So what do I do again?20:38
ComradeHaz`Do I need to delete teh current image?20:38
Gibbyyes20:41
ComradeHaz`so rm -r /opt/ltsp/i386/* ?20:42

Gibbyboth i think23:02
fluvvellgibby: Possibly the hybrid. I've got an HVR4000 currently not installed, the hybrid stuff was making my life too difficult23:03
Gibbyhmm ok, i gotta go, will try later thanks23:03
=== Gibby is now known as Gibby_afk
fluvvellgibby_afk: for when you get back, its still likely to be /dev/dvb/adaptor0/frontend0   or frontend1.  It may show two tuners, one you have to set up with DVB support the other for DVT. The DVB is likely to be CX8800 or something, cant remember the other. But you can only have one tuner working at a time on a hybrid.23:07
ComradeHaz`So, has anyone got any idea what is causing my host woes with mythbuntu-diskless?23:16
ComradeHaz`it even shows what it receives from the dhcp server and then promptly ignores it.23:16
ComradeHaz`Gibby, it seems I need to manually setup all the backend stuff when using net-boot23:26
