[00:01] ComradeHaz`: Nope [00:01] Actually having some trouble getting virtual box to install correctly [00:01] not sure what I've done since I had it on here last time :/ [00:05] Make sure you get it from here http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads [00:05] [www.virtualbox.org] Linux_Downloads - VirtualBox [00:12] could anyone tell me what the best way would be to run arbitrary commands on startup? [00:12] just with respect to linux, not mythtv [00:12] uh, nope Gibby_2, it's packaged for debian [00:12] problem was a PEBKAC [00:13] Pwen, hard to know but you probably want to look into crontabs. [00:21] ComradeHaz`: You don't get all the options if you don't download from virtualbox.org [00:21] [virtualbox.org] VirtualBox [00:22] Gibby_2, I prefer to use packages whenever possible [00:22] just downloading ubuntu 32 bit [00:22] doesn't like 64bit [00:26] that is a package [00:29] Sorry, I meant repo package [00:37] ok, due to licensing you don't get the full version of it [01:00] Oh, yeah, I'm getting the ose [01:01] which is fine. [01:03] So. Nearly installed ubuntu 10.04. [01:03] Is there anything I need to do before attempting to follow your guide again?/. [01:05] ComradeHaz`: thanks ^_^ [01:05] nope [01:05] just stop at the DHCP part [01:05] Aye, I was going to ask how I handle that. [01:05] Pwen: cron is not for running commands at start up [01:06] I was interpreting his question somewhat... [01:07] Pwen: Do you want the commands to run at start up even if not logged in? Do you want them to run every startup? [01:17] Gibby_2, is there a way to stop ubuntu starting gnome at startup and instead just dropping me at tty1? [01:18] yep [01:18] 1 sec [01:18] i use webmin, but let me find the command for it [01:19] alost tempted to uninstall x and gnome actually. [01:21] update-rc.d gdm remove [01:21] that should it [01:22] hmm, what kind of network interface do I want the virtual box to create for the Ubuntu box? [01:23] teh virtual one, I mean of course. [01:23] bridged [01:38] Gibby_2: yeah, I want to have a few things start in the background (vncserver on :1, virtualbox, etc) [01:39] Pwen: I use webmin for that kind of start and the right startup scripts [01:40] hmmm webmin, I had never thought of it [01:41] I always try to do things the hard way :P [01:43] I have Webmin on every one of my NIX boxes [01:51] It's on there somewhere... [01:51] Oops, sorry [01:52] Right. [01:53] Gibby, it's now downlaoding and installing with ltsp [01:53] I think I should probably call it a night [01:55] This looks like it could take a while. [01:55] Oooh, maybe not. [01:57] So, Gibby_2, how do you suggest we deal with DHCP? [01:58] Gibby_2: how would I configure a custom startup script/commands with webmin? [01:59] Gibby_2: I just found the 'create startup and shutdown action' link, nevermind me ... ;p [02:05] A'ight, off to bed. Catch you tomorrow hopefully Gibby. And thanks for your help so far [02:05] Only wish I'd thought of sticking a virtual machine on earlier! [02:06] nn all! [02:08] NP, I will be on most of the day tomorrow [05:49] I run a mixed mythbuntu backend / LinHes(Knoppmyth) frontends. Recently I updated the frontends, and they got 0.23.1. I've enabled the autobuilds PPA for 0.23.1 in mythbuntu, but there doesn't seem to be mythtv-backend packages, just frontend and themes. I run lucid i386. === sebrock_ is now known as sebrock [06:21] According to the launchpad build log, the packages were built, but I don't see how to retrieve them. They don't seem to be publicly accessible. [07:17] wsuetholz, the packages are available and you should be able to do an apt-get update and apt-get upgrade to get them. I can see them available here https://edge.launchpad.net/~mythbuntu/+archive/0.23.1/+packages [07:17] [edge.launchpad.net] Packages in “0.23.1” : 0.23.1 : “Mythbuntu Developers” team [09:27] Mornign all! [14:47] yeah, in my morning meetings though, give me an hour [14:48] Righty ho! Tlak later then :) [15:22] Sorry for the delay in answering... The mythtv-backend packages are not listed at the listed site. [15:22] tgm4883: Not mythtv-backend [15:23] And, it seems I run amd64 not i386.. [15:26] That being said, I did manage to retrieve the packages by hand http://ppa.launchpad.net/mythbuntu/0.23.1/ubuntu/pool/main/m/mythtv does contain the packages needed.. [15:26] [ppa.launchpad.net] Index of /mythbuntu/0.23.1/ubuntu/pool/main/m/mythtv [15:27] however apt-get update && apt-get upgrade did not pull the backend packages.. It did do the frontend, which resulted in my not being able to run the frontend on the backend anymore..... [17:51] * ComradeHaz` tentatively pokes Gibby [17:51] !ouch [17:51] Sorry I don't know about ouch [17:51] :D [17:52] How do I get a list of what Zinn will do? [17:52] Hi Gibby, something I can help you with today? I am a bot, use !help to see what I can do. [17:52] Having a bit of trouble with your guide :) [17:52] where you at? [17:52] Booted, configuring. [17:53] specifically, # dpkg -i mythbuntu-repos.deb then # dpkg-reconfigure mythbuntu-repos.deb [17:54] First, lets clarify something though. The mounting and the chrooting. That should be done on my Ubuntu 'server' right? [17:55] yes after the ltsp-server-build [17:55] did you download mythbuntu-repos.deb first? [17:55] Yes, the install appears to work. [17:55] Let me pastebin you. [17:56] http://paste.ubuntu.com/485912/ [17:56] [paste.ubuntu.com] Ubuntu Pastebin [18:00] oops try dpkg-reconfigure mythbuntu-repos [18:02] Oh God! [18:02] lol [18:03] Of course, I'm not sure who's teh bigger muppet! [18:03] You making the typo or me blindly following it [18:03] There's another one by the way. [18:04] Switch the the image envirnment: <------ your command there is missing a couple of characters. [18:06] ahh [18:08] what is it missing? [18:10] Uh, either just a 6 or 6/proc [18:11] I think I guessed and since it seems to be wroking I guess I got lucky :D [18:12] This line should work sudo mount -o bind /proc /opt/ltsp/i386/proc/ [18:12] did you do anything with DHCP? [18:12] yup [18:12] figured it out. [18:13] It might be worth describing how one should modify an existing dhcp config to make it work [18:14] Why does it recommend password protecting MythWeb? [18:22] In case you open it to the internet [18:22] I don't so I didnt' put a password [18:29] when I hit my mythbox's IP address with a browser I just get a totally blank page... [18:29] Further, even though I have configured a password it doesn't ask for one [18:30] Also, your auto-login text is messed up. [18:30] some HTML has slipped in ;) [18:31] I noticed [18:31] did you boot a network client yet? [18:33] Yeah [18:33] That's why I'm configuring it :) [18:33] and you pointed to that IP right? [18:34] Yes. [18:34] It redirects to /mythtv [18:34] but it's blank [18:34] try it on the client, do localhost [18:35] Also, the machines hostname is it's mac address despite definig one on teh dhcp server. [18:35] Can I change that? [18:37] you can try, do it on the client while it is booted [18:38] So, how much like a standalone system will this machine be? [18:38] Will it remember all teh videos it's imported? [18:39] Will browser history be saved etc etc? [18:39] yep [18:39] everything [18:39] it is like a thin client [18:39] Hmmm [18:39] I think I am doing something wrong [18:40] what directory should I have chrooted to? [18:40] did you run the backend configuration on the network booted image [18:40] /opt/ltsp/i38 [18:40] 6 [18:42] and should the hostname at my prompt change? [18:42] nope [18:43] Will things I install while chrooted happen live on the client? [18:44] no [18:44] not until you exit and update the image [18:45] OK, so why am I doing this stuff using chroot rather than just booting and doing it on the client? [18:45] Because this effects the global image rather than just one machine? [18:45] b/c if you do in with chroot onthe image it will change it for all clients you boot to that image, if you do it on the client you booted the image too, it will saved for that client only [18:47] OK, looks like I am slowly behinning to understand! [18:48] So, once the client is booted, is there any appreciable resource requirements on the 'server'? [18:50] just network [18:50] Oh? [18:57] Mythweb also blank page from localhost [18:58] did you run the mythbackend setup? [18:59] Ah, possibly not [18:59] gah, odd. [19:00] Terminal show no hostname now and there's no bash completion :/ [19:02] Oh. Not running bash! [19:02] wtf :D [19:04] gah [19:06] who are you logged in as? [19:06] It has created and booted into user account 'mythtv' but that has no password (that I know of) set and it won't let me su to the account I created when I set up the machine [19:07] ahh opps, there is no shell for mythtv by default [19:07] Ah [19:07] OK, in. (as me) [19:07] well, maybe noty a bad thing [19:08] what is mythtv's password set as? [19:08] Something random? [19:08] Or shiuld I change it? [19:10] idk [19:13] How do I run the backend conf then? [19:14] go to system/administration [19:14] MythTV Backend Setup [19:24] Hmm [19:24] I appear to have broken something [19:25] It won't boot properly [19:25] hmm, "Could not reliably determine fully qualified domain name" [19:30] uhhhh [19:30] go fix the image [19:33] Meh, it booted ion second attempt [19:33] but hostname wasn't saved :/ [19:37] Hmm. can't see backend [19:37] Beginning to wonder if it's installed. [19:37] run the mythbackend steup [19:38] there is no mythbacked setup [19:38] hmmmm [19:38] Gah [19:38] did yo uinstall it on the image? [19:38] install it on? No. [19:38] It's OK, can install it now I guess [19:38] but things fdon't feel right [19:39] yes install it now [19:39] no bash completion and this bloody hostname not working make it feel all broken [19:39] what is output of cat /etc/passwd|grep mythtv on the network booted client? [19:40] Uh, biab dude. Dinner. [20:15] Gah, backend setup has got stuck at 'deleting UPnP client' :/ [20:16] [19:39:43] what is output of cat /etc/passwd|grep mythtv on the network booted client? <---- mythtv:x103:105::/home/mythtv:/bin/sh [20:17] *x:103: [20:18] MythTV Setup terminal is just a list of errors [20:18] FFS [20:18] wtf is wrong with this bloody thing?! :? [20:18] * ComradeHaz` is starting to get annoyed [20:24] Grr. It seems to be having trouble committing any changes [20:24] So if I change things in control centre and then press apply, it just hangs until I kill the control centre window [20:24] needless to say when I go back to control centre teh changes remain uncommitted. [20:27] hmm sounds like the install got correupt [20:27] It's thoughroughly pissed me off to be honest. [20:27] I have far too much to do for this to take up this much time to configure. [20:35] rebuild the image, then boot the client and do all the installs from it [20:38] So what do I do again? [20:38] Do I need to delete teh current image? [20:41] yes [20:42] so rm -r /opt/ltsp/i386/* ? [20:42] yep [20:43] gotta run to computer store, bbl === Gibby is now known as Gibby_afk === notivan is now known as hal [22:04] lspci should list my PCI tunder card right? [22:05] Gibby_afk, yes === Gibby_afk is now known as Gibby [22:07] hmm, errr, i have a server with a PCI slot, add a 3 PCI riser card to it, from that I added a 4 port sata card and a HVR-1600, lspci sees the new sata card but not the tv tuner card and the computer does not see the 2 new hard drives plugged into the sata card [22:07] hmm, errr, i have a server with a PCI slot, add a 3 PCI riser card to it, from that I added a 4 port sata card and a HVR-1600, lspci sees the new sata card but not the tv tuner card and the computer does not see the 2 new hard drives plugged into the sata card [22:07] sorry [22:11] Disk utility sees the new sata card too [22:18] Gibby, changes are not being saved :/ [22:18] just rebuilt the image [22:18] exactly as it was before. [22:18] check /var/cache/mythbuntu-diskless/overlay [22:18] file exists [22:18] are there other stuff in there [22:19] there is stuff in there, sure [22:20] I deleted it all and it's been recreated [22:20] but when I make changes on teh client, the files in there do not get updated [22:20] hmmm [22:21] Could it be a simple permissions issue? [22:22] all files in overlay are owned and created by root [22:22] is that correct? [22:25] i think so [22:25] Wtf [22:25] OK [22:25] So, just changed the hostname on the client [22:25] errr my PCI problem is erking me too [22:25] it changed immediately in cache [22:25] rebooted [22:26] as soon as it got to the Mythbuntu logo, it got changed back! [22:51] damn?! [22:51] ComradeHaz`: Please watch your language. [22:51] ROFL [22:52] how do i tell if myth can see my tuner card? [22:52] se [22:56] se? [23:00] gibby: mythtv backend setup will show your cards [23:01] fluvvell: correct but I go to Capture Cards/New capture card/ then what? I don't know which card I am supposed to choose [23:01] gibby: how many cards have you got installed ? [23:01] 1 [23:01] a HVR-1600 [23:02] gibby: remind me, is that a DVT card ? or DVB ? [23:02] no clue [23:02] gibby: VHF or Sattelite dish ? [23:02] both i think [23:03] gibby: Possibly the hybrid. I've got an HVR4000 currently not installed, the hybrid stuff was making my life too difficult [23:03] hmm ok, i gotta go, will try later thanks === Gibby is now known as Gibby_afk [23:07] gibby_afk: for when you get back, its still likely to be /dev/dvb/adaptor0/frontend0 or frontend1. It may show two tuners, one you have to set up with DVB support the other for DVT. The DVB is likely to be CX8800 or something, cant remember the other. But you can only have one tuner working at a time on a hybrid. [23:16] So, has anyone got any idea what is causing my host woes with mythbuntu-diskless? [23:16] it even shows what it receives from the dhcp server and then promptly ignores it. [23:26] Gibby, it seems I need to manually setup all the backend stuff when using net-boot [23:26] think I might just use my hdd install for now :/ [23:26] For a while at least.
