prepJust updated to US, some of the audio app's will not launch.00:10
tucemiuxwhich appz??00:20
prepJasmin, JACKTimeMachine, and a few others, Meter Bridge, launches then shuts down, the others, never launch00:35
tucemiuxprep, youre using lucid?00:38
prepUbuntu Studio00:39
tucemiuxprep, yes but i mean, what version? lucid is 10.04?00:40
prepI started with 10.04, added the Studio packages. Newbie here, please forgive00:41
tucemiuxyou "added" the studio packages?00:44
prepyes00:45
prepin Synaptic00:45
tucemiuxso you mean you had ubuntu then installed ubuntustudio-desktop?00:47
prepyes, I selected all the Studio packages, then installed00:48
tucemiuxprep, have you ever used jack?00:49
preprunning right now00:50
prepah, needs to be running to run the ohers00:51
tucemiuxprep, exactly -- but not all00:51
tucemiuxalso, you might want to shut down other appz like firefox or mp3 players like amarok before you use those appz, pulse audio is supposed to let you use all those appz but doesnt really work from what I have seen00:52
prepok. Have you used Buzztard? Holstein helped me with the PPA, but still says its locked when I try to install in terminal00:52
tucemiuxnever used buzztard but that's an issue someone in #ubuntu might be able to help you, its more of an ubuntu problem, i typicall use appz out of the box, that's why I use ubuntustudio, it has all the audio/sound appz I need without manual install00:54
WiesshundHi Blank__02:26
Blank__elo02:27
Wiesshundwent to look at an mpeg2 encoder tool i found on line, and it was a win32 app of course, and wouldnt you know the damned thing was a replicating trojan. sorry bastards02:29

holsteini might have got the wrong one06:31
prep? Who knows, I'm a newb to Linux06:31
holsteinwhats the PPA?06:32
prepI got the one from the ppa page06:32
prepppa:gstreamer-developers/ppa06:33
* holstein found it 06:33
holsteinhttps://launchpad.net/~gstreamer-developers/+archive/ppa06:33
holsteinSO06:33
holsteinopen up your sources list06:33
holsteingo system admin sources06:33
prepwhere's that located?06:34
holsteinsystem - administration - software sources06:34

holsteinyou can get to it in synaptic too06:34
holsteingo to the authentication tab06:34
holsteindo you see it in there?06:35
holsteinthat where it goes06:35
prepLaunchPad for PPA  developers06:35
holsteinprep: let me try it and see if it works for me...06:35
holsteinwell06:41
holsteinyou can relax06:41
holsteinits just not in that PPA06:41
prepweird06:42
holsteinprep: i would do all of these steps though06:42
holsteinhttp://www.buzztard.org/index.php/Building#Ubuntu06:42
prepwonder what the deal is? Would love to try it.06:42
holsteinthat guide implies that the gstremer updates needed are in that PPA06:43
holsteinand the dependacies are listed that06:43
holsteinand the dependacies are listed there*06:43
holsteinapt-get install gtk-doc-tools libgconf2-dev libglib2.0-dev libgnomecanvas2-dev libgnomevfs2-dev libgsf-1-dev libgtk2.0-dev libgstreamer0.10-dev libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-dev libhal-dev liboil0.3-dev librsvg2-dev06:43

holsteinprep: from what?06:44
holsteinOH06:44
holsteinyeah, you gotta run apt as sudo06:45
holsteinprep: anytime your installing something06:45
holsteinand some build steps06:45
holsteinyou'll need to use sudo06:45
holsteinprep: you get the sudo command?06:45
holsteinyou said you were coming from windows right?06:45
prepnot exactly. No, OSX06:45
holsteinAH06:45
holsteinsame deal then06:45
holsteinover in OSX06:46
holsteinsay, your user is prep06:46
holsteinif you want to install something06:46
holsteinyou need to enter an administrator password06:46
holsteinin linux and OSX06:46
holsteintypcially normal users arent allowed to do much06:46
holsteinits safer that way06:47
holsteinSO06:47
holsteinwe use the sudo command06:47
prepAh got it. My password won't type, strange06:47
holsteinthat temporarily gives your normal user admin privs06:47
holsteinprep: the password wont show06:47
holsteinthats on purpose06:48
prepok, done, ask Y/N to continue06:48
holsteinso look at all the crap its trying to install06:48
holsteinand think of how you would get rid of it06:48
holsteinif something in there broke something06:48
holsteinif it were my box06:49
holsteini would use the PPA purge tool06:49
holsteinto get rid of that crap if needed06:49
prepWhat's that and what does it do?06:49
holsteinyou can use PPA purge in ubuntutweak06:49
holsteinbut thats only if you have problems06:49
holsteinprep: just read all that06:49
holsteinso you know whats going on06:49
holsteinthats all the stuff you listed06:50
holsteinand asked to be installed06:50
holsteinwith sudo apt-get install whatever06:50
holsteinand the dependancies needed, if any06:50
holsteinif you say, y06:50
holsteinit'll be installed06:50
holsteintheres just not an easy 'undo' for this06:50
holsteinso, maybe say no06:50
prep0 upgraded, 103 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 36.3MB of archives. After this operation, 144MB of additional disk space will be used. Do you want to continue [Y/n]?06:50
holsteinand read the rest of that guide06:51
holsteinand decide if you want to take it on06:51
prepso app isn't worth messing with at this point?06:51
holsteinbuilding packages can be tricky06:51
holsteinbut its a learning experience06:51
holsteinprep: whats it do?06:51
preptell me about it. I need to pickup the Ubuntu book06:51
prepit's a audio tracker06:52
holsteinso, whats it do?06:52
holsteintracker = recorder?06:53
prepyes, uses numerical data to trigger audio, like Renoise06:53
holsteindid you ask about it over in #opensourcemusicians?06:53
holsteinprep: nice06:53
holsteinthat sound cool06:53
holsteinand ive looked for something like that06:53
holsteinto trigger samples06:53
holsteinwith a qwerty keyboard06:54
persiavkeybd can do some for some keys (assuming you can trigger on note on events)06:55
prep_sorry net dropped06:55
holsteinpersia: sweet06:55
prep_what's persia?06:56
* persia 06:56
holstein01:54 < persia> vkeybd can do some for some keys (assuming you can trigger on note on events)06:56
holstein*while you were out ;)06:56
holsteinalso06:56
holstein01:52 < holstein> did you ask about it over in #opensourcemusicians?06:56
holsteini just asked06:56
prep_I didn't06:56
holsteinprep: try building it06:57
prep_I'll give it a shot in the AM06:58
prep_what do you think about System 76?06:58
holsteinim gonna get something from them06:58
holsteinits hard to pay a little more for something from them06:59
holsteinbut the quality is great06:59
prep_seems to be, think an i3 is enough for a Buntu box?07:00
holsteindepends07:00
holsteini think its plenty07:00
holsteinbut im on a 9inch netbook right now07:00
prep_how's that running for you?07:01
persiaAnything sold by system76 or zareason is more than enough to run Ubuntu.  That said, it may not be that any specific device is enough for your specific use cases.07:01
holsteinprobably more about specs07:01
holsteinand what your going to do with it07:01
holsteini was an early adopter of the netbooks07:01
holsteini got a mininote with VIA chips07:02
holsteinits a pain07:02
holsteinbut it works well acutally07:02
holsteinand the EEEpc is great, and out-of=the-box easy07:02
prep_I just want power, waiting on Ardour 3 with MIDI, maybe add hardware synths, trigger/record/mix07:03
prep_I'm thinking Starling to start with, then the Ratel07:03
holsteindoes it have an express slot?07:04
holsteinsomewhere you can add firewire if you want?07:04
holsteinOR better yet, does it have a firewire port07:04
prep_Starling does not07:04
holsteinthats something you might be interested in down the road07:04
prep_no07:04
prep_all the FW pieces I want, aren't working at the moment with Linux07:05
holsteinjust a head up07:05
holsteinUSB devices usually just dont do the trick07:05
holsteinfor multitracking07:05
holsteinagain07:05
holsteindepends on what you plan on doing07:06
holsteinif its got an express slot you can add whatever later on07:06
holsteinRME gear is well supported07:06
holsteinand quite nice07:06
prep_what I've gathered07:06
prep_except the Fireface07:07
holsteinyeah?07:07
prep_which I want. It would be the card and MultiFace07:07
holsteini thought they specifially supported linux07:07
prep_ffdao says no07:07
holsteini dont keep up with it much07:07
* holstein not in the market for new gear yet07:08
prep_I may just keep djing, see what happens over the next year07:08
holsteinw0w07:09
holsteinyeah, im reading some links about that07:09
holsteini thought RME were friendlier to linux07:09
holsteinah well07:09
holsteinthe firepod is nice07:10
holsteinworks great07:10
holsteincant beat the price07:10
prep_Focusrite seems to be the best at the moment07:10
prep_at times it seems.07:10
prep_out of the box for the most part?07:11
holsteinhttp://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SaffPro24/ looks pretty sweet07:12
holsteini got the firepod because its got preamps07:12
holsteinthey can be bypassed and you can use the balanced in's07:12
holsteinbut that was an affordable way for me to get 8 decent preamps going07:13
holsteinfirepod is out-of-the-box now07:13
holsteintoo bad the ffado support isnt there yet for the saffire pro2407:19
holsteinthese companies *gotta* start releasing some linux drivers07:19

illytacoshello hello, I have a pretty common problem from what I read in the forums but I tried a bunch of options in the forum without any luck whatsoever. I am not able to connect to the internet which I read is a common problem. I tried reinstalling ubuntu studio with a hardwire connection without luck, I've tried installing network manager from cd... but no luck. Is there something I'm missing? And thanks!!!23:45
