slangasek(alternate answers accepted: a step-by-step of grafting LP's package history into my branch with richer revision history)00:00
james_w`slangasek: if you are preparing a new upstream at the same time then you can use merge-upstream by tricking it00:13
james_w`slangasek: otherwise you can basically do the same thing, and re-merge the same version that is currently there00:13
slangasekjames_w`: how does that work? :)00:13
slangasekjames_w`: I consistently get an error whining that it can't find the previous upstream version00:13
james_w`slangasek: you find a revision that you want to be the current tip of the "upstream" branch and tag that with upstream-$UPSTREAM_VERSION00:14
james_w`that will stop it whining about that00:14
macojames_w`: does this have a wiki page?00:14
james_w`after you have done the import then you can delete that tag again00:14
james_w`maco: it does not, as far as I know00:14
macobcurtiswx was trying to do a merge with upstream last night and my bzr-fu started whimpering00:14
maco(he was asking me for help)00:14
slangasekjames_w`: oho, thanks00:15
james_w`ah, his was straight forward if it was the case I helped him with earlier00:15
james_w`that should have a wiki page at least00:15
* maco grumbles about varying definitions of "straightforward"00:16
james_w`heh00:16
james_w`I mean the usual case, not trying to do it for the first time like Steve00:17
evmanjo: thanks00:19
james_w`maco: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DistributedDevelopment/Documentation/NewUpstreamVersion00:28
macojames_w`: thanks00:28
slangasekjames_w`: seems I need to create tags for both the old and the new upstream versions?00:57
james_w`slangasek: it should be creating the new upstream version for you00:58
james_w`slangasek: what command are you running?00:59
slangasekah, so I only needed the one for the old upstream version00:59
slangasekI misunderstood then00:59
james_w`yeah, it just needs a hint of where to start, then it will do the rest00:59
slangasekbzr merge-upstream --version 1.1.2 ../pam_1.1.2.orig.tar.gz ../bzr/bzr/Linux-PAM/tags/Linux-PAM-1_1_2/00:59
james_w`the error you were getting to start with was that it didn't know where to pick up the "upstream branch" from, and so didn't want to act00:59
james_w`that looks fine00:59
* slangasek nods01:00
slangasekthanks :)01:00
slangasekjames_w`: so should this "create the tag yourself" hack be documented on the wiki page?01:32
james_w`slangasek: probably, yes01:59

msehudiHi guys. I'm a noob in kernel development. How do you load and use a kernel after building it?04:11
RAOFmsehudi: Sounds like you want to be in #ubuntu-kernel.  You need to set up your bootloader to load the new kernel, but if you're using the Ubuntu build process that'll be done automatically when you install the package.04:13

smbpitti, Morning Martin, could you put on your danger sensitive sunglasses and accept the uploaded Lucid kernel and lbm for sru? (in the case of lbm it probably makes sense to accept both -24 and -25?)09:03
pittismb: ok, will do an SRU round09:21
smbpitti, \o/09:21
pittismb: can you please reupload lbm with -v to include the last two changelog records?09:32
smbpitti, Which one? The 24 or th -25 or both09:32
pittismb: the -25 one09:33
pittismb: same for linux-meta09:33
smbpitti, ok, can do09:33
* pitti rejects the current uploads09:33
pittismb: thanks09:33
pittismb: linux was uploaded twice (same version), so I'll reject the older upload and look at the newer; ok?09:34

pittione 18 hours ago, one 11 h09:34
smbhm, let me check09:34
smbI am unaware of the second09:34
smbpitti, How on earth would it be possible to upload the same version twice?09:35
pittismb: you can upload as many broken or duplicated versions to the unapproved queue as you like :)09:35
pittibut you can only accept one version09:35
smbpitti, Hm, I thought it would not let me upload anything again when it had gone into accept09:36
pittiright09:36
pittibut it wasn't accepted yet09:36
pittiit's in "unapproved"09:36
smbright, for some reason I thought I need to increment the version even then. But so I can upload the just rejected packages only with more history09:37
pitticorrect09:37
pittiusually, when this happens, I look at the most recently uploaded one09:37
smbProbably ok, though very weird. I am pretty sure I did upload only once09:38
smb...09:38
smbIf I am not dream walking09:38
tkamppeterpitti, hi09:38
pittihello tkamppeter, how are you?09:38
tkamppeterpitti, fine, as you have perhaps seen from earlier IRC discussion and from my weekly report I have cleaned up another 18 MB from the installed default system.09:39
pittitkamppeter: from foomatic ppds? right, I saw that; nice work!09:40
smbpitti, Hm, one seems to contain the orig tar.gz and the other not... Mine should not...09:40
cjwatson18MB> coo09:40
pittitkamppeter: that's uncompressed in the installed system, right? the .deb size shouldn't be affected that much, since that's already compressed, right?09:41
tkamppeterpitti, I have replaced the Foomatic XML by a compressed PPD archive, saving said space and made printer driver listing (the "searching for drivers" in s-c-p, or simply "lpinfo -m") significantly faster.09:41
pittihttp://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20100901/ is still the same size as a few days ago09:41
smbpitti, Is it possible for you to see who did the upload?09:41
smbpitti, Of the newer one09:42
cjwatsonpitti: well, there was some language-pack fiddling in there09:42
pittismb: not really, I'm afraid09:42
tkamppeterpitti, I could not upload due to beta freeze. I have prepared all packages.09:42
pittitkamppeter: ah, that explains it09:42
pitticjwatson: oh, just saw in the seeds; so something else got added to the CDs recently, or grew?09:43
smbpitti, Ok, hold off. I want to investigate there09:43
pitticjwatson: the day after the OO.o dependency fix landed, they all fit09:43
pittismb: okay09:43
tkamppeterpitti, in terms of .deb files it saves only half a meg, but there is still the speed advantage, which is probably much bigger when running a live system from a CD-ROM.09:44
tkamppeterpitti, what has to be done to get the change onto the CDs are two steps, first me uploading the changed packages and then a core-dev changing the seeds from pulling foomatic-db and foomatic-db-engine to pulling foomatic-db-compressed-ppds.09:45
cjwatsonpitti: the update-seeds cron job was stuck on a lock, so seed changes weren't being applied properly09:45
cjwatsonwhich caused considerable confusion09:46
pittiah, I see09:46
pitticjwatson: oh, and the other issue is that we recently got a langpack update, so the delta packages aren't empty09:47
pitticjwatson: it's not a biggie for beta, and for final we'll coordinate this more carefully09:47
cjwatsonnod09:49
pittismb: sconklin pinged me last night, so maybe it was him?09:49
pittismb: ok, please let me know when I should look at them09:49
pittiat least the lucid SRU queue is empty except for this linux upload now09:50
OdyXpitti: sorry to ask, but where as the udev upload been stuck ? (I don't know the exact process, but saw you'r tagging in the bzr.)09:50
pittiOdyX: it's held in unapproved; we are in beta freeze09:51
pittiOdyX: it'll go in tomorrow evening, if things go as planned09:51
OdyXah okay. But there's reasonable hope to get that in, right ?09:52
cjwatsonnot for beta09:52
pittiOdyX: not into beta09:52
cjwatsonit'll go in for final09:52

tkamppeterOdyX, hi09:53
OdyXpitti: Okay. Thanks for your time to explain the basics of Ubuntu release management. :->09:54
OdyXtkamppeter: hi09:54
pittiheh09:54
tkamppeterOdyX, if you want to see how my new replace Foomatic-XML-by-PPD-package looks like, all is on git now.09:54
OdyXtkamppeter: yeah, saw that. As Debian is in freeze, I probably wont take a look before its release, but thanks for your work !09:55
tkamppeterpitti, one question about the migration from old XML ugliness to the new lightweight PPD archive: I made foomatic-db conflicting with the new foomatic-db-compressed-ppds and plan to replace foomatic-db and foomatic-db-engine by foomatic-db-compressed-ppds in the seeds (ubuntu-desktop, ...). Would the migration work then or do I need more.09:57
pittitkamppeter: the new packages should conflicts:/replaces: the old ones; without the replaces:, apt will hold back the new ones instead of installing the new ones and removing the old ones09:58
tkamppeterpitti, especially I want to avoid a "Replaces: foomatic-db" in foomatic-db-compressed-ppds as the PPD archive does not exactly replace foomatic-db, it only provides the PPDs to CUPS.09:58
pittitkamppeter: can you install them in parallel?09:59
pittitkamppeter: well, but the net result is the same, it supplies PPDs to cups; so replaces: wouldn't be really wrong from a semantics point of view?09:59
tkamppeterpitti, yes, but I want that foomatic-db is removed for updaters so that once they get the space free, second there are no duplicate listings of the same PPDs, once coming from XML and second coming from the archive, and third there is no XML being processed making "lpinfo -m" slow.10:00
pittitkamppeter: right; so I think C:/R: will do fine10:01
tkamppeterpitti, so if I do the "Replaces:" can I be sure that the Build-depends: foomatic-db in the gutenprint package really installs foomatic-db on the buildds and not foomatic-db-compressed-ppds? This build process needs the actual XML.10:02
pittitkamppeter: it doesn't affect build-depends10:02
pittitkamppeter: the buildd chroots have neither pacakage installed, so they will install whatever you specify in the B-Dep: line10:03
tkamppeterpitti, so build-depends always pulls the native packages and never Provides:?10:03
pittitkamppeter: I think what you mean is "provides"10:03
pittitkamppeter: but first, real pacakges are preferred over virtual ones, and second I don't think you need provides her10:03
pittie10:03
tkamppeterpitti, s/Provides/Replaces/10:04
pittitkamppeter: right; if there is a package "a" and a package "b" which "provides: a", an apt-get install a will always install a, not b10:04
pitti(unless b is already installed)10:04
pittitkamppeter: replaces don't have that kind of magic10:05
tkamppeterOdyX, would it be a problem for Debian if I add Replaces: foomatic-db to foomatic-db-compressed-ppds?10:06
pittiit would be weird _not_ to do it in Debian10:07
pittitkamppeter: Conflicts: too, please; otherwise the other package wouldn't be removed10:07
tkamppeterpitti, adding the C:/R: (C: was already there, adding R:).10:09
smbpitti, apparently the second upload was done by tim. It is mostly the same, just is an upload which contains the orig.tar.gz. I would prefer to re-upload my version which has the diff only. Could you reject that currently uploaded one?10:19
pittismb: well, can do, but having the orig.tar.gz doesn't hurt really10:20
pittiit'll be rejected if it's different from teh archive, and ignored otherwise10:20

cjwatsonskaet: it's still open because it needs to be cleared up for natty, as we'd like to turn that grub2 option back on (enables smooth visual transition from the bootloader to the OS), but it's no longer an issue for maverick18:25
ogasawaraskaet: I don't believe it needs a release note from a linux package perspective since the the kernel issue was trigged if gfxpayload=keep, and grub2 switched back to gfxpayload=text for Maverick18:25

manjosuperm1, I think you load the legacy bios 1st, then use duet to do EFI, which intel EFI guru says can cause memory map issues, leacy does not have any memory map, so using duet to do memory map later you might have issues. Intel says only dell does this, and duet is not recommended to use on productiuon systems.20:09
manjosuperm1, so this could be a dell EFI implementation issue you are hitting20:09
superm1however EFI worked with Windows 7...20:10
superm1i'm not sure on the actual implementation detail here though if duet was used20:10
manjoyeah they say using duet can cause strangeness.. if it works on their waybridge implenentation then it should be the duet memorymap that is causeing the problems20:11
manjosuperm1, can you check with your bios ppls ?20:11

SpamapSScottK: on Breaks/Replaces vs. Conflicts/Replaces/Provides , my thinking is that anything that will build against libdbi0-dev will also build against libdbi-dev .. and according to debian policy, thats the correct way to make sure there's only one of something that is installed and provides the same dependencies.22:36
SpamapSScottK: IIRC, breaks is more for packages that configure the system in incompatible ways22:38
lifelessSpamapS: breaks/conflicts is not about configuration22:39
lifelessSpamapS: its about what phase of the dpkg transaction the graph incompatibility is permitted at22:39
SpamapS"When one binary package declares that it breaks another, dpkg will refuse to allow the package which declares Breaks be installed unless the broken package is deconfigured first, and it will refuse to allow the broken package to be reconfigured."22:39
lifelessyes22:39
lifelessconfiguration in the very narrow sense of debian policy, not in the sense of 'oh, and I put my files in /srv'22:40
lifelessa configured package isn't necessarily useful, but it is in a valid state to *run*22:40
SpamapSright, in the maintainer scripts configure, etc. right?22:40
cjwatsonSpamapS: there was a recent change to Debian policy to be explicit that Breaks+Replaces is better than Conflicts+Replaces in nearly all situations.22:40
lifelesscjwatson: \o/22:41
cjwatsonthat's what ScottK is referring to.22:41
lifelesscjwatson: I must have missed that update going by22:41
cjwatson3.9.0 or thereabouts I think22:41
SpamapScjwatson: In this case, I also want to Provide the old package, since anything that build-depends on libdbi0-dev will build just fine w/ libdbi-dev... or should we just force the issue and make all of them change their control files?22:42
cjwatsonthe only reason Conflicts was needed with Replaces was to stop you going back to the old version with the replaced files, and the agreement on -policy was that Breaks was sufficient for that.  This is *independent* of anything to do with Provides.22:42
SpamapSas I type that, it seems its better to fix all the build-depending source packages rather than have them silently build against libdbi-dev.. :-P22:43
cjwatsonProviding a specific version of a library in a different version seems kind of evil though.22:43
SpamapSwell the original author should have named it libdbi-dev .. but didn't, they named it libdbi0-dev...22:44
cjwatsonlibdbi0-dev Provides: libdbi-dev would be reasonable; libdbi-dev (unless it's version 0) Provides: libdbi0-dev is kind of weird22:44
lifelessyeah22:44
SpamapStotally agree22:44
cjwatsonif it's still version 0 or otherwise API-compatible then I think it's fine22:44
cjwatsonas in if it's just a renaming, not associated with a major version bump22:45
superm1cjwatson, tomorrow manoj said he is going to come on site to see the panic in person and use mine.  http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Docking_Station/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=430-3114&mfgpid=206120&chassisid=8560 is the one you are looking for (there is a simple one too,  but it doesn't include serial)22:45
SpamapSand we have to touch all the build-rdepends anyway because they may be using libdbi0=0.8.3, which is not ABI compatible with libdbi0=0.8.2, which they most likely built against22:45
SpamapScjwatson: I'm for clarity over magical build successes, so I'll drop the provides, and change conflicts to breaks.22:46
