space_ | hello? | 01:57 |
---|---|---|
space_ | can anyone help me out? | 01:58 |
space_ | this thing on? | 01:59 |
space_ | so i just flew n from reno and boy are my arms tired... | 01:59 |
space_ | but seriously | 01:59 |
space_ | can someone help me? | 02:00 |
jk_ | space_, describe your problem in detail and you're more likely to get a response. | 02:00 |
space_ | lol | 02:01 |
space_ | okay | 02:01 |
space_ | one second | 02:01 |
space_ | I'm running the latest version of xubuntu and I am trying to install some software but every time i try to install something from the software center it completes about 90% of the operation and then gives me an error message that says failed package operation. This seems to happen no matter what i try to install. | 02:04 |
likemindead | space_, open Synaptic and check for Broken packages. | 02:09 |
space_ | okay, one sec | 02:14 |
space_ | wow... okay, I forgot to mention I'm a total noob and I have no idea how to check for broken packages | 02:19 |
likemindead | They'd be listed on the left if there were any. | 02:20 |
space_ | oh okay, I guess there aren't any then | 02:21 |
likemindead | Okay. Open a Terminal. Enter (without the quotes): "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade" then enter your password. | 02:22 |
likemindead | After it finishes, let us know if there are any errors listed. | 02:22 |
space_ | well, there's quite a bit of information here. Think i found them. | 02:26 |
likemindead | Errors? | 02:27 |
space_ | don't suppose i can paste this here can I? | 02:27 |
space_ | there's a lot and i'm not sure what's what | 02:28 |
likemindead | Use a pastebin. --> http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/ | 02:28 |
likemindead | Then copy the link here. | 02:28 |
likemindead | Also, it's Shift+Ctrl+C to copy in a Terminal (or use the mouse). | 02:29 |
space_ | that's cool. here ya go. http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/488538/ | 02:30 |
likemindead | Are you in a Live CD environment? | 02:33 |
space_ | nope | 02:36 |
likemindead | Weird. Anyone else want to chime in on this one? | 02:39 |
likemindead | You should return the repos to the defaults. Somehow, they've been changed. See: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu | 02:41 |

Laserbeak43 | can someone please edumacate me on the difference? | 05:49 |
Laserbeak43 | or is it the same thing? | 05:49 |
Laserbeak43 | i guess the error message was wrong cause i've found it here ftp://ftp.gtk.org/pub/glib/ | 05:52 |
psycho_oreos | if your project involves GUI stuff then that maybe why | 05:59 |
Laserbeak43 | but it doesn't | 06:00 |
psycho_oreos | GLib, a low-level core library that forms the basis of GTK+. It provides data structure handling for C, portability wrappers and interfaces for such run-time functionality as an event loop, threads, dynamic loading and an object system. | 06:02 |
psycho_oreos | http://www.gtk.org/overview.html | 06:02 |
Laserbeak43 | yeah read that | 06:03 |
Laserbeak43 | that doesn't say anything about GUI stuff | 06:03 |
Laserbeak43 | having trouble installing it too | 06:03 |
Laserbeak43 | i'm reading the instructions here linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/6.3/general/glib2.html | 06:04 |
Laserbeak43 | i'm reading the instructions here http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/6.3/general/glib2.html | 06:04 |
psycho_oreos | have you actually asked in #gtk+ ? | 06:05 |
Laserbeak43 | when i get to make install | 06:05 |
Laserbeak43 | i get an error... | 06:05 |
Laserbeak43 | no, didn't know they existed | 06:05 |
Laserbeak43 | i'll try there | 06:05 |
Laserbeak43 | thanks | 06:05 |
psycho_oreos | nw | 06:05 |
Laserbeak43 | why do you have to waste countless hours configuring linux :/ | 06:11 |
psycho_oreos | !offtopic | Laserbeak43 | 06:19 |
ubottu | Laserbeak43: #xubuntu is the Xubuntu support channel, #xubuntu-devel for discussion regarding development of Xubuntu, and #xubuntu-offtopic is for random chatter. Welcome! | 06:19 |
Laserbeak43 | lol, sorry.... | 06:19 |
jimisrvrox | hey Laserbeak43 you still around? | 07:13 |
Laserbeak43 | jimisrvrox: yep | 07:44 |
jimisrvrox | too bad you werent around 30 mins ago... | 07:44 |
jimisrvrox | I had a panel and everything was working fine and then my wife did some crap and next thing I know..couldnt right or left click for anything(menus) only thing I could do was middle click for workspaces.. | 07:45 |
jimisrvrox | so I ended up having to switch her back to Gnome.. | 07:45 |
jimisrvrox | instead of XFCE | 07:45 |
jimisrvrox | and now its REALLY acting up! | 07:49 |
Laserbeak43 | oh.. | 08:06 |
Laserbeak43 | sorry for him? | 08:06 |
omgh4x | anybody here? | 08:32 |
omgh4x | hello? | 08:59 |
BlueEagle | Hello omgh4x. | 09:00 |
omgh4x | i installed xubuntu 10.10 beta on my comp with an ssd and it is abnormally slow | 09:00 |
omgh4x | am i doing something wrong here? | 09:01 |
BlueEagle | 10.10 is not even beta at this moment. It's more an alpha imo. | 09:01 |
omgh4x | well still | 09:01 |
omgh4x | it took about 2 minutes to boot after post | 09:01 |
BlueEagle | !10.10 | 09:02 |
ubottu | Maverick Meerkat is the codename for Ubuntu 10.10, due October 2010 - Maverick is Not released and Not Stable, discussion and support in #ubuntu+1 | 09:02 |
BlueEagle | Try that channel instead. :) | 09:02 |
omgh4x | try #ubuntu+1? | 09:03 |
BlueEagle | Yes. Since this is a boot issue then #ubuntu+1 would most likely be able to help you as this would not be xfce spesific. | 09:04 |
omgh4x | ok I see thank you | 09:05 |
BlueEagle | You're most welcome. | 09:05 |
robin-gvx1 | hello, i have a bit of a problem, but am not sure where i need to be | 09:57 |
robin-gvx1 | on my regular laptop, i run xubuntu, but now it seems there is something wrong with X | 09:58 |
robin-gvx1 | can't figure out what though | 09:58 |
Sysi | symptoms? | 09:58 |

robin-gvx1 | a terminal cursor | 09:59 |
robin-gvx1 | no response to any keys, not even to the whole skinny elephant thing | 09:59 |
robin-gvx1 | i can only restart the computer by holding the on/off switch | 10:00 |
robin-gvx1 | when doing a recovery boot, i can use the root shell though | 10:01 |
Sysi | that's lower that x problem | 10:01 |
Sysi | what version, occurred after installing updates? | 10:02 |
jjovereats | Kick (but not ban) me if you think that getting Compiz to run on Xubuntu is not right. | 10:03 |
* jjovereats busywaits | 10:03 | |
robin-gvx1 | hm, let's see | 10:03 |
robin-gvx1 | xub 9.10 | 10:04 |
robin-gvx1 | i don't think there were any updates recently | 10:04 |
robin-gvx1 | i did fool around a bit with EnvyNG | 10:04 |
robin-gvx1 | but I uninstalled those drivers afterwards | 10:04 |
jjovereats | Hello. It's morning over here. | 10:07 |
jjovereats | And, it takes a standard procedure to use Compiz. | 10:07 |
Sysi | jjovereats: hello, this is support channel | 10:07 |
Sysi | we're not interested when things actually work | 10:07 |
Sysi | robin-gvx1: have you tried older kernels? | 10:08 |
robin-gvx1 | i have tried the second kernel in the list | 10:09 |
jjovereats | Kick (but not ban) me if you think that getting Compiz to run on Xubuntu is not right. | 10:09 |
robin-gvx1 | i'm trying the third right know | 10:09 |
robin-gvx1 | no cake | 10:10 |

robin-gvx1 | hm, it seems i did that already | 10:14 |
robin-gvx1 | oh, i didn't | 10:17 |

tcat | hi | 13:59 |
tcat | is there a network manager gui in xubuntu? | 14:00 |
robin-gvx1 | nm-applet? | 14:02 |
Sysi | same as ubuntu, nm-applet | 14:03 |
tcat | how do i get to that in the menu please? | 14:04 |
Sysi | it's in panel, just click | 14:04 |
tcat | i can't believe i didn't see that. sorry for the thick question. | 14:06 |
Sysi | np :) | 14:07 |
userxxx1119999 | hello all | 17:14 |
userxxx1119999 | would anyone be able to field a n00b question at all? :) | 17:16 |
Sysi | no if nobody knows it | 17:16 |
charlie-tca | !question | 17:16 |
ubottu | Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) | 17:16 |
userxxx1119999 | Ok ty. I'm trying Xubuntu for the first time, running from a USB stick. In all the other Linux distros I've tried, finding my hard disk has not been an issue. In the other Ubuntu versions it simply appears in Places along with Media and File system etc. I guess the disk is not mounted although Xubuntu can 'see' it for example if I open GParted. Any ideas? :) | 17:22 |
Sysi | maybe worst workaround i know is to open mousepad, ctrl+o and mount appearing partitions on sidebar | 17:25 |
Sysi | userxxx1119999: live installation images aren't for *really* permanent use, and your drive can appear on next boot | 17:30 |
userxxx1119999 | I see. Well I've been looking for the Linux version that best suits this machine before installing permanently, with Xfce most things seem to work directly 'out of the box', I just hadn't had this particular problem before. | 17:35 |
Sysi | you can have gnome, kde and xfce on same machine | 17:40 |
userxxx1119999 | perhaps that kind of setup would be more suited to an advanced user than myself ;) | 17:42 |
=== jimisrvrox_ is now known as jimisrvrox | ||
userxxx1119999 | I've found another potential solution to my problem: there is a 'Mount Devices' applet that can be added to the panel. | 17:47 |
userxxx1119999 | In my case this applet doesn't appear to work, but it might for others. | 17:48 |
slow-motion | hi | 18:20 |
