boboxHi folks - anyone able to help with a strange GParted outcome? ...09:46
bobox(a partition has lost its entry under the 'mount point' column in GParted)10:02
iluminamelunaI need help w/ upgrade for problematic KKoala: I have a partitioned USB flash drive and the .iso (alternate CD) for the full installation pkg. I've been following the following tutorial: http://mintarticles.com/read/operating-systems-articles/how-to-install-portable-linux-ubuntu-on-a-bootable-usb-flash-drive-from-sun-virtualbox,13641/  but I'm stuck at using the Virtualbox app. I have 2 files for it but neither calls the ap10:32
iluminamelunaplication. I have an ASUS Eee PC 901 w/ 2 stacked ssd's, one 4G and one 16G. I screwed up w/ the original installation of KK by putting it on the 4G so now there's no room for the upgrade. Anyone able to help me?10:32
geirhailuminameluna: I'd add partition(s) for /home and/or /usr on the 16G drive; then booting a liveUSB, rsync /home and/or /usr to the 16G drive; add the new partitions to /etc/fstab, then boot and see that it works.10:37
geirhaIf it works correcly, boot liveUSB again, and remove the content of /home and/or /usr on the 4G partition.10:38
iluminamelunado I do this from a gnome-terminal?10:38
geirhaPartly. You first use gparted to create the partition(s).10:39
iluminamelunaand liveUSB? is that the same as installing KK to the USB? which is where I'm stuck ...10:39
geirhaThen mount the one you want for /home for instance, to /mnt; then cd /home && rsync -a * /mnt10:40
geirhaliveUSB is when you write the ubuntu iso to a usb drive (not installing)10:41
iluminamelunaI've used GParted to create partitions on my 16G USB but now the tutorial I've been using says to use a DOS something by running Virtualbox but I have only a couple of files neither of which does anything except issue error msgs10:41
geirhawriting the iso to a CD gives you a liveCD10:41
iluminamelunageirha: copy the .iso to the fat32 partition?10:42
iluminamelunathanks ... will try that ..10:42
geirhahttp://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download10:43
geirhaLook there. At step 2, select USB stick, select Ubuntu as OS, then click the Show me how button10:43
geirhaI have to leave. Might be back in 2-3 hours.10:45
geirhaChances are someone else in here will drop in and help you further.10:46
iluminamelunathanks10:48
iluminamelunahave .iso on USB10:48
iluminamelunaI'll haang around10:48
Out-Of-Handhi ... can anyone help me11:17
Out-Of-Handi installed ubuntu on a notebook... and my Cdrom keeps spinning like mad ....11:17
Out-Of-Handim operational... i installed ubuntu on my notebook... works great. but the Cd rom keeps wanting to spin ... out of control at times11:20
Out-Of-Handanyone ?11:22
boboxI have a problem with an interrupted update ... can anyone help with running 'dpkg --configure -a' manually to correct the problem?11:57
boboxAlso ... the system asks for cache -> open()failed to be reported ... to where?11:57
lukjadbobox Hm11:58
boboxI'm running ubuntu 8.04. Thanks11:58
philinuxbobox: open a terminal from Apps>access and use sudo dpkg --configure -a11:58
lukjadOr in other words: Applications->Accessories->Terminal11:58
philinuxUse copy and paste so you get the command correct11:59
boboxphilinux: yep, but I don't know what I'm doing (beginner, see!) .. what next?11:59
lukjadbobox Once you put in that text, it will prompt you for a password11:59
philinuxPress enter and put your password in11:59
lukjadwhen typing the password, you won't see any movement on the screen, so don't be worried that it's not accepting it. Just type it and hit enter12:00
boboxOK ... hey! it's 'doin stuff'! (sorry ... palpable relief at this end ... ). Will 'it' have just completed all upgrade installations from the local cache?12:02
philinuxIf you now run this we'll see. sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade12:03
boboxpresumably this can be done via synaptic package manager?12:05
bobox(I'm not very command-line yet...)12:06
philinuxYes. Either just copy and paste that in or use Update manager to check there are no further errors.12:08
boboxok ... looking good ... but getting an error .... hmm, not a genuine Ubuntu item, apparently.12:11
philinuxIs that in the terminal or update mangler12:11
boboxwas in terminal & also a menubar alert ...12:13
boboxare the details any use ? ... i suspect this might be best reported back to the pckage originators (NEBC Oxford, UK)12:14
philinuxYep not ubuntu that package is it?12:14
boboxI think this is probably as fixed as it can be for the moment. Thank you a GREAT deal philinux for your help. Yep, right, not an Ubuntu pckg. Cheers12:15
philinuxok no worries.12:16
bobox? one last question: "update mangler" ... amusing linux speak or an indication that it's not well regarded>12:16
bobox?12:16
bobox(new to the lingo, see ... )12:17
philinuxOh I use that term from testing new releases like Maverick 10.10. As the update manager is the worst way to upgrade in a testing environment due to package inconsistencies.12:18
philinuxIn stable releases it is fine sorry for the confusion12:19
boboxcool. thanks. have a great day.12:20

st33medAnyways, what chat client are you using?15:51
Verminatorst33med, Empathy, and I'm not too please wiht it so far, but in all actuality, I've been having problrem after problem after installing 10.04.  I was using 8.04 w/ little problem, but 10.04 has me rather flustered.15:53
philinuxVerminator: 10.04 what problems.15:54
* philinux thinks xchat reigns supreme for IRC15:55
Verminatorphilinux:  app crashes, slow, sluggish, apps not importing data from /home, Amarok2 absolutely stinks, OO incredubly sluggish, crashing, locking, system lock ups, cant configure my omitor, USB ports going offline and thus locking up my usb keybord, thus requiring a hard reboot.  both Amorok and Rythem box wont import my saved podcasts,  OO wont import my saved macros, , Empathy wont wrap this text so it flows off15:59
Verminatorthe right of my screen (I cant see this so if spelling errors, have some leeway w./ me) Rythem box loxked up, cant think of any mor erith now, rant over, sorry15:59
philinuxVerminator: Blimey16:00
Verminatorphilinux, yes, but I REFUSE to return to MS16:00
philinuxWas this a clean install16:00
Verminatorphilinux, yes from CD, I have a seperate partition for /home, so kept that though16:01
philinuxWhat are the pc specs. I've not had any bother since Feisty Fawn apart from intrepid. I reinstall new release every 6 months. Home partitoin too.16:02
Verminatorphilinux, i first tried Kubuntu as that was what i was using previously, then swithed to Ubuntu to see if that helped any.  It helped some.  thinking of ditching ubuntu based distros and try something else, but I'm learry to leave.16:02
Verminatorphilinux, Acer Aspire, T160, AMD 3400, 2Gb ram16:02
philinuxWonder if it's the video card16:05
Verminatorbuilt in w/ Nvidia proprietary driver form the ubuntu repos16:10
philinuxWhats the performance like with the driver deactivated?16:10
philinuxOr compiz turned off16:11
Verminatorphilinux, its an integrated card.  I have a diff card I can try, but have not installed it yet.  I have not tried a diff driver.   Effects are turned off.16:11
philinuxI assume you've checked through top etc to find a culprit16:12
philinuxMemtest etc16:13
philinuxAnything in the logs /var/log/messages and xorg log etc16:13
Verminatorphilinux, sorry but no, I'm still newish to Linux, so usually, I find work arounds or scour the net, forums, or IRC channels to fix my most pressing need at the time16:15
Verminatorphilinux, i wouldnt know what to look for in the logs16:16

Silver_Fox_Hello.21:55
aveilleuxHello Silver_Fox_21:56
Silver_Fox_Hello aveilleux21:57
aveilleuxI am attempting to install the PHPbb3 forum software on my Ubuntu server. The software uses the PHP mail() function, which I have activated to provide e-mail authentication for new users. sendmail and mail are both installed, and PHPbb is configured to use sendmail. However, when activation emails are being sent, they fail. What's strange is that /var/log/mail.log shows that the email was sent successfully, and PHPbb has no error logs22:43
aveilleux regarding the mail. Any thoughts?22:43
aveilleuxHebJay#12322:44
aveilleux.....ignore that.22:44
aveilleuxWrong keyboard.22:45
phillwaveilleux: I'd suggest asking the phpbb forum people, they help me out with my forum22:46
phillwhttp://www.phpbb.com/community/index.php22:47
aveilleuxUgh, more forums to register for22:47
aveilleuxI don't think it's a PHPbb problem, since everything's running fine from the PHPbb end22:47
aveilleuxAnd even up until the mail leaves the computer through sendmail22:47
aveilleuxIt just seems to get lost in the Internet22:47
phillwaveilleux: if you're running phpbb, it is a good source of reference. If phpbb is not reporting an error then you may be better asking on the server area of ubuntu at http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=33922:49
phillwThe most common error is that your outgoing email address is not listed as 'commercial' and gets kidnapped by the spam bots.22:50
aveilleuxIt's not showing up in the smap boxes, though.22:50
aveilleuxspam*22:50
phillwaveilleux: I use gmail as my sending agent, so I can't really help on sending directly from php mail. the phpbb forum will have details as to ensure things are configured up.22:52
aveilleuxphillw: I tried using that as well (SMTP to gmail), but nothing I'm doing seems to help.22:53
phillwaveilleux: give me few moments :)22:53
phillwaveilleux: this is the guide I used for mine http://www.yinfor.com/blog/archives/2009/02/phpbb3_email_settings_with_gma.html22:54
phillwbut it still took some 'tweaking' to get it to work :-\22:55
blasenmichmy power went out and ubuntu machine restarted but won't boot... I can only reboot with help of a 9.04  system disk.... can I run a repair utility to correct problems or just reinstall?22:57
phillwblasenmich: you can reinstall grub if the mbr is corrupt, if you were part way through an update then you may also need to re-install the kernel. Neither of those actions will destroy any of your information23:00
phillwblasenmich: http://forum.phillw.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5 has the links to re-installing a poorly grub and http://forum.phillw.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=35 has the reinstalling of a kernel. Try the grub one 1st and if it still complains use the re-install kernel option. (these are on the ubuntuforum area, I just keep them there also for quick reference :-) )23:04
blasenmichcan you translate "grub" for me.... perhaps a windows comparable?23:19
seidoshmmm, i think windows has the "master boot record"...23:19
aveilleuxseidos, blasenmich: The Windows equivalent of GRUB is NTLDR23:20
blasenmichthx23:20
seidosaveilleux, thanks.  i would have to research the "master book record" to see what the difference is23:21
aveilleuxseidos: Master boot record is a sector of the hard drive; it's not a bootloader program23:22
seidosaveilleux, that makes sense23:22
aveilleuxseidos: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_boot_record23:22
seidosaveilleux, so then the master boot record exists on any system?23:23
aveilleuxseidos: It exists on every hard drive, yes23:23
seidosi have too much to read right now23:23
seidosthat's enough info, i don't think an entire wiki is necessary23:23
seidosthanks23:23
geirhawikipedia is dangerous. You start off reading a page, then you need to click a link to read another topic to understand the initial topic, and then another link, and then you stear off to a similar topic, and then... before you know it you're reading about the Power puff girls23:29
blasenmichwhat was the URL for the kernel reinstall?  the grub reinstall didn't help23:45
stlsaintkernel reinstall?23:45
blasenmichyes, another guy gave me a couple of links because I was having trouble booting my system... he gave me a link to a guide on how to reinstall the grub and kernel... looks like he's not online any more23:48
aveilleuxblasenmich: The logs for this room are at http://irclogs.ubuntu.com23:49
stlsaintaveilleux: good call23:50
aveilleuxblasenmich: http://forum.phillw.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3523:52
blasenmichthx......when I looked at the log, it stops right before that part of the conversation... do you have access to something I don't?23:52
aveilleuxblasenmuch: Yeah... I was there when he posted ;-)23:53
blasenmichthx23:54
* phillw is back, but gets called away as working, if you need the links again I can post them, else just head over to where I keep my notes at http://forum.phillw.net/viewforum.php?f=423:56
