[00:02] hmm.. So I've just noticed that Evolution has a new "default" signature - Sent from Ubuntu.. [00:02] bah, free advert is the best advert ;) [00:03] kklimonda: oh, I like that [00:05] kklimonda, yes [00:05] just apt-get dist-upgraded [00:06] svu: do you have empathy installed? [00:07] kklimonda, yes [00:07] there is a bug 621507 reported about this issue but it was supposed to be fixed [00:07] Launchpad bug 621507 in GLib "glib-compile-schemas fails if override files refer to non-installed schemas" [Medium,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/621507 [00:07] oops. may be not [00:07] damn [00:09] kklimonda, installed epiphany. still no luck [00:09] empathy [00:29] fresh 10.10 install, dist-upgrade, hit a web page that wants flash, used the 'missing plug-in' thing to install whatever the top/default one is (I think it is the nonfree one) the "applying changes" dialog seems to have gone out to lunch. I can't move it, and dragging a term window over it leaves term window traces [00:29] ah, I see why [00:29] the "done' dialog came up behind it [00:41] Is 10.10 going to have Firefox 4.0? [00:41] RPG-Master, It's too late for that [00:42] Daekdroom: Crap. I figured... :/ [00:42] Was just curious. [00:42] RPG-Master, tomorrow is the final freeze. [00:43] Daekdroom: And Firefox is still beta :( [00:43] We shouldn't expect any API/ABI/bin updates after then [00:43] Precisely. [00:44] Watch FF 4 be released the same week. [00:46] quick question: how crashy is 10.10? [00:48] depends on what you're using, KDE and the other apps I'm using are prefectly stable here [00:49] its not [00:49] not had a crash yet [00:49] if you gonna do a full reinstall then wait 2-3 weeks til its officially released imo [00:49] my only prob is i cant get ubuntu one to work on it yet [00:50] only want it so my daughter can use the music store [00:50] i have it running in a VM right now [00:51] 10.10? [00:51] since it's currently not feasible for me to be dualbooting between OS's i'm just running it inside vmware workstation [00:51] yeah [00:51] it's updating atm [00:51] hey, 64bit flash is back :D [00:52] I have xp on this one but can't remember the last time time I booted it [00:52] haha [00:52] my i7 loves VM's :D [00:52] just..it doesn't love the memory usage :p [00:53] I found out years ago that I could easily live without all the windows only bits [00:53] i like to game [00:53] and other things [00:53] i'm far too used to windows to switch completely [00:54] I play a bit of wow and thats it [00:54] wow bores me [00:55] yay! [00:55] used to enjoy it but they made it too easy to help the casuals [00:55] 64 bit flash for linux again! [00:55] http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/ [00:55] I have quit til new expansion [00:55] "64-bit support — Native support for 64-bit operating systems and 64-bit web browsers on Linux, Mac OS, and Windows." [00:55] ooh nice [00:55] Does that mean Maverick reenables it? [00:55] * yofel just said that and got ignored :( [00:55] I'd so far skipped on using the wrapped version [00:55] yofel :( [00:55] yofel: heh. you weren't excited enough? [00:55] probably :D [00:56] Hm. [00:56] I was going to install the 32 bit one [00:56] I guess I could install the 64 bit one in ~/.mozilla/plugins [00:56] works fine so far in firefox 3.6 [00:56] then remove it once it is available [00:56] yofel: install FF4 man! it is all kinds of fun! [00:56] that's what I did [00:56] ehh [00:56] i dislike FF4 [00:56] why?? [00:56] nemo: I have it installed, but it doesn't support all the addons I'm used to yet :P [00:56] it's just..weird [00:57] ah [00:57] whats 64 bit like these days? [00:57] yofel: addons are an issue - but I only care about noscript and firebug [00:57] and those 2 are supported [00:57] SoulShadow: that's vague :-p [00:57] dunno, i can't compile android with 64bit, so i can't use it [00:57] I was too scared to take the 64 bit option last install so went x86 [00:58] only just come back to ubuntu as the wife moaned too much about slackware [00:58] gotta love when it sais 9 installed are no longer supported [00:59] and so starts the upgrade :D [00:59] Aphex: heh. slack and gentoo ain't bad, but ubuntu has grown on me [00:59] so much stuff just works, yet I usually can still customise and build what I want [00:59] plus it has style [00:59] heh, well, it works fine here, except for minor annoyances like flash and I would image that wine could cause issues, but for what I need 64bit works fine. it's lost a bit of importance since we got the -PAE kernel though [00:59] between you and me im glad to be back on ubuntu [00:59] just dont tell the wife :-p [01:00] WB! :D [01:00] god [01:00] Aphex: gentoo has been relegated to the servers at my home - well, the servers and my P133 notebook [01:00] Aphex: w/ a whopping 96MiB of ram :) [01:00] i just booted my XP VM [01:00] lmao [01:00] Aphex: that one runs a severely stripped down gentoo w/ xfce4 for the desktop [01:00] i kinda like XFCE [01:00] Aphex: after ssh + nfs + xfce4 + seamonkey, I have about 15MiB left for use :) [01:01] w/o using swap! \o/ [01:01] i don't think my computer is happy [01:01] with my vm ram usage [01:01] 73% lol [01:01] lol [01:02] surprise: chrome is using 600MB [01:02] still haven't tried chrome [01:02] i love chrome [01:02] just not the mem usage [01:03] heard good and bad things and firefox does the job for me [01:03] Aphex: the graphics accel for FF4 does awesome stuff on my machine. [01:03] well. most of 'em. [01:03] one it does not work on at all :-/ [01:03] hopefully they'll get that fixed [01:03] why's paste not working [01:04] i can't paste between host and VM >< [01:04] SoulShadow: virtualbox? [01:04] vmware [01:04] oh [01:04] bleah [01:04] didn't even realise ff4 was out [01:04] * nemo ♥ virtualbox [01:04] Aphex: still beta [01:06] * SoulShadow murders his xp vm [01:06] So, does sun-java6 not appear in the 'Partner' repo anymore? [01:08] it's not uploaded yet [01:08] does mint menu work? [01:08] in 10.10 [01:10] So...I have to wait, 'eh? [01:10] or use package from 10.04 [01:10] SoulShadow: You'd have to check with Mint support [01:10] !mint [01:10] Linux Mint is not a supported derivative of Ubuntu, please seek support in #linuxmint-help on irc.spotchat.org [01:11] * SoulShadow eyerolls [01:11] it's a package [01:11] available to install for any debian-based distribution [01:11] it's also not supported here. [01:11] okay, i just asked if anyone had it working, was all [01:11] I suppose ask the package maintainer [01:11] * h00k shrugs [01:11] meh it's a vm, i'll give it a shot [01:17] now if only I could get sound to work on my new 10.10 install [01:17] I'd be happy [01:17] kklimonda says it is 'cause the alsa kernel module is still not available for my version of kernel [01:17] had that on my mums pc nemo [01:17] I checked on boot, it seems the version in synaptic is exactly between the two kernel versions I have available [01:17] just ran sound test and somehow it fixed it [01:18] hm [01:18] I tried that [01:21] nemo: nah, I'm saying that alsa in 10.10 may be too old to properly support your hardware. [01:21] oh :( [01:21] kklimonda: I've been waiting hoping for that backports version to update [01:22] nemo: you can, in the meantime, test ~ubuntu-audio-dev ppa [01:22] 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 05) [01:23] nemo have you got the nightly repositories? [01:23] I'm not familiar with sound at all - all I can help with is give you some more options to check. [01:23] Aphex: no? :) [01:23] Aphex: just tell me what to do and I shall do it! [01:24] first thing being to add ubuntu-audo-dev ppa [01:24] righto [01:24] no more sun-java6? [01:24] Package sun-java6-jdk is not available, but is referred to by another package. [01:24] However the following packages replace it: sun-java6-demo [01:25] I've got partner repo's enabled [01:25] ttp://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntuone/nightlies/ubuntu. [01:25] oops wrong one [01:25] brb [01:27] Ian_corne: not there for mav yet [01:27] ok, *sad panda* [01:27] Guess openjdk will have to do for minecraft :) [01:28] fingerprint gui is awesome [01:28] that guy rocks for having created that [01:28] hi, can somebody please give me a link to catalyst (fglrx) 10.10 beta for ubuntu 10.10? It should be called fglrx-installer i gues... [01:31] kklimonda: you know, I was watching startup this time... [01:31] aaaand, just occurred to me my lack of sound could be related to the kernel oops on startup :-/ [01:33] probably is [01:34] hm. now where would that terminal spam on startup be kept [01:34] nemo: you can use dmesg to get the log from startup where oops should be located [01:34] 'cause I'm not finding it in dmesg or syslog [01:34] kklimonda: no oops :) [01:34] oh [01:34] just doesn't *say* oops [01:34] says "Oops" [01:34] and I fail at case insensitive [01:38] http://m8y.org/tmp/dmesg.txt if anyone cares to speculate on the error, my attempts at searching for a matching call trace are so far fruitless. [01:41] er. that should have gone into channel [01:41] bug #632430 in launchpad seems same [01:41] Launchpad bug 632430 in linux (Ubuntu) "ips-adjust - BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null)" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/632430 [01:41] similar laptop model to mine [01:44] looks the same [01:47] nemo: unless it's the *exact* same laptop with the same hardware, chipset and firmware versions, file a new bug [01:47] kernel team policy [01:47] yofel: hardware seems identical, laptop is very close [01:48] Isn't the trace towards the bottom of dmesg, [ 11.851246] Call Trace: ?? [01:49] charlie-tca: hm? [01:49] charlie-tca: I did note I found it once I searched for the right thing, right? :) [01:51] Wellll, not unless I missed it after : [01:51] http://m8y.org/tmp/dmesg.txt if anyone cares to speculate on the error, my attempts at searching for a matching call trace are so far fruitless. [01:52] seems identical means file a new bug. If the hardware is different even by version number, it might need a different fix [01:53] charlie-tca: I meant a matching one on google [01:53] then I found one :) [01:53] You can give the bug number in your report [01:53] but. fine... [01:53] will do that later, since I'm already running really really late on getting home [01:53] kernel team would prefer to call it the same on their own, truth be told. [01:54] charlie-tca: the hardware doesn't seem different though - just the model # [01:54] That's enough to be different [01:54] I expect it is identical HW in a different shell and w/ slightly tweaked something or other [01:54] fine w/ me [01:54] more bugs means more attention [01:54] Just reference this bug for them [01:54] They can then verify if it matches for the fix [02:44] I had both E16gnome and Ubuntu Standard Desktop (or similar) as gdm choices. For the first time, I chose E16gnome. I didn't like the window decorations. I went back to the other choice, and somehow got the same grey decorations. I uninstalled E16, and now gnome starts without decorations at all and I have to open a terminal (metacity --replace &) but that's irritating and I had effects on (I believe). Have I misunderstood wh [02:44] at's going on? [02:47] I just reenabled effects (I forgot I just chose a different driver too...) I'll log and try again. sorry to possible have wasted time [02:48] u can save effect settings [02:52] /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager [02:52] /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager is the gconf key if I understand [02:52] oh. he left [02:52] n/m [02:58] hello all [02:59] I am having problems upgrading ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 [02:59] Well I decided to update to 10.10 via Distribution Upgrade and the installer is stuck with 10 mins to go [03:00] Says installed xserver-xorg-input-mouse [03:00] and just sits there... [03:00] for about 1 hr now [03:01] any ideas? [03:03] ... [03:04] Kendalja: hey [03:04] hello [03:04] Kendalja: is there anything in details? [03:04] normally "stuck" means "waiting for user interaction" [03:04] like a config file changed [03:04] and they want you to approve the mods [03:04] well I cant see the bottom of the install window [03:04] wow. [03:04] your resolution is that low [03:04] ? [03:04] no I am on a netbook [03:04] alt left click on the install window [03:04] err, unity? [03:04] to forcibly drag it up [03:05] sweet [03:05] Kendalja, > you'd be best getting the iso onto a disk and installing.. from my disk i still had to do a partial upgrade.. So with a full upgrade it would be even dodgier.. [03:06] says installing new version of config file /etc/logrotate.d/samba ... [03:06] then thats it [03:07] not moving at all? [03:08] nopers [03:08] sucks' [03:10] do u have any disk u can use to put the iso on? [03:11] I am getting the netbook iso now [03:11] all I have is USB stick [03:11] is that ok [03:11] ? [03:12] yea,, u can get a usb creator,, then put it on [03:12] i had netbooks.. buh sure [03:12] have u tried the chrome O.S yet? its great for netbooks [03:13] no I havent [03:13] Kendalja: If you haven't closed the upgrade window yet, hold alt to click and drag the window with the mouse to where you can see the bottom of it. [03:13] try that,, or Jolicloud.. best for netbooks [03:13] I did that Jordan_U [03:15] Kendalja: Try clicking within the terminal output area and pressing enter. [03:16] did that also [03:16] just creates space [03:16] Kendalja: Try ctrl+c [03:16] that wants to close it [03:17] it says it will abort the operation [03:18] Kendalja: If nothing has happened for a long time then it may be the best that you can do (hopefully afterward the other operations will continue). What is the exact text of the error message? [03:18] says installing new version of config file /etc/logrotate.d/samba ... [03:18] trojan_spike, Is JoliCloud ready yet? [03:18] is jolicloud linux? [03:18] yes [03:19] yea,, Jolicloud is ready for use [03:19] google chrome O.S has gone public too [03:19] trojan_spike, which Ubuntu release is it based on? [03:19] Joli that is [03:19] you have to build chromium though [03:20] ubuntu remix [03:20] which [03:20] :) [03:20] im trying to think.. i remember hearing it [03:20] have you guys used chromium or joli? [03:21] Kendalja, Yeah I have used chromium OS [03:21] fast? [03:21] its not really ready [03:21] yeah its fast [03:21] Haiku is nice too [03:21] it got good reviews [03:22] Haiku has a great feel to it also [03:22] blazing fast [03:23] is there a fix for the cpu usage by xorg [03:25] Mozilla prisim and ubuntu remix << Jolicloud [03:25] prism [03:25] they use a custom netbook launcher [03:27] I am enjoying a highly customised Ubuntu Lucid netbook at the moment [03:29] lucid? [03:29] yes [03:29] I think I will try those os' you mentioned [03:29] can I use irc and stuff on them? [03:30] of course [03:30] run anything linux based..? [03:30] huh> [03:30] ? [03:30] I mean if I wanted to dl an app do i just dl a linux version [03:31] for the os [03:31] Preferably use that systems package manager if any before downloading packages [03:31] would not want to end up in dependency hell [03:31] ok [03:32] which OS would you recommend I start with? [03:32] also HaikuOS is not linux based [03:32] Kendalja, for a netbook> [03:32] ? [03:32] yep [03:32] I am getting Jolicloud now [03:32] Ubuntu 10.04 netbook edition [03:32] :) [03:32] and that also [03:32] well 10.10 [03:32] 10.10 aint ready yet [03:33] plus 10.04 is an LTS release [03:34] lts? [03:34] !lts [03:34] LTS means Long Term Support. LTS versions of Ubuntu will be supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server. The current LTS version of Ubuntu is !Lucid (Lucid Lynx 10.04) [03:35] jolicloud looks nice [03:35] yeah it is pretty [03:35] it will run linix apps? [03:35] Kendalja, yes [03:35] its ubuntu based [03:35] ahh [03:35] shares the same repositories [03:36] so why is it better than ubuntu 10.04 netbook? [03:36] or not... [03:36] I did not say it was [03:38] well in your opinion which is better? [03:38] Well I have not tried Jolicloud for a while now and when I had it was in a VM [03:39] I thought it was nice but I still love ubuntu [03:39] You should really try for yourself and make your own decision [03:39] !better [03:39] Usually, there is no single "best" application to perform a given task. It's up to you to choose, depending on your preferences, features you require, and other factors. Do NOT take polls in the channel. If you insist on getting people's opinions, ask BestBot in #ubuntu-bots. [03:39] :-) [03:45] when i change user with sux, i can't run any gtk apps (they crash with "Aborted (core dumped)"), but other apps work fine. i've had the problem for about a week. [04:16] Volkodav: works fine here in firefox 3.6 [04:17] yofel: did you uninstall both the player and the wrapper before installing a new one ? [04:18] I did run apt-get purge flashplugin-installer, but rather because I don't need them anymore than that they caused problems [04:19] i removed the nswrapper what it is called too just in case [04:19] the wrapper is still installed, but doesn't seem to be used [04:19] * yofel purges that too [04:27] hmm works ok so far trying in opera 10.7 [04:30] cpu usage is still out there [04:31] like it always does this monster [04:46] you don't need to remove nspluginwrapper; just removing the [links to] system-wide libflashplugin.so and installing the native-arch one will suffice [04:47] the former is easily accomplished via purging flashplugin-installer, as yofel alluded to [04:59] do switchable graphics work in ubuntu? I found a strange bug. I use a netbook with broadcom Wifi and it realy works good. But now the problem. When I'm in Batterie mode ( even if the batterie is very very full ) my Wifi speed is like 3,4kb/s ... it takes 5 minutes to load google.com. In Lucid I dont have any problems. Well when I put in my Charger, the Wifi connection speeds up to normal speed. I dont have to reboot, no reconnect. I just put it in and its fast as normal. [07:55] When I put it out again, the connection slows down. Can you confirm it? Or even help me? [07:57] Wubbbi, - what type of machine? (more) [13:10] if I dont close the file before I commit it locks up kate (ok if I do) [13:11] when I was working with the beta of 10.04 kate would crash when I did this, but that was fixed, now in 10.10 beta it just locks up, can't do anything with it [13:12] I have to end it with system monitor [13:21] mikehh: bugs in kate directly should go to bugs.kde.org, search there too [13:21] *should directly go [13:21] Are there any LVM-related cautions against upgrading to Maverick Beta at the moment? [14:34] Need your help in solving an issue with Kwin. I am on kubuntu 10.10 / kde 4.5.1 [14:34] The problem is desktop getting freezed at times. Since last 2-3 days this has happened 4 times. [14:34] I am on intel driver. Can I do something to avoid this freeze? [14:35] I am presently working with all the effects off [14:35] effects = desktop effects [14:36] Aray: Did you use Lucid before? Because I have this on my Lucid machine (with Intel gpu) too. It freezes a while. As a workaround, I wait. [14:36] Alvin: Yes you are right. I had Kubuntu Lucid earlier and then updated from PPA [14:37] Yes I too wait and then it comes back but the real problem is sometimes the screen just freezes with multiple color and no key works. [14:37] And you didn't notice these freezes in Lucid? [14:39] Alvin: No freeze in Ubuntu Lucid - I worked smoothly there for month. But on Kubuntu Lucid I just installed and upgraded immediately. [14:39] Is there anyone willing to log out of Kubuntu and tell me if kdm reappears for them? [14:39] Aray: What Intel card is that? [14:39] Alvin: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Memory Controller Hub (rev 07) [14:39] 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) [14:39] 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) [14:40] There are several known issues with different types. I didn't try yours yet. [14:40] Alvin: Sorry, I should have use pastebin perhaps [14:40] For 2 lines? Nobody will care :-) [14:40] Thanks [14:40] Actually I am on a Dell Laptop inspiron [14:40] Maybe that model is even certified by Canonical :-) [14:41] and I worked in Gnome for an year or more without a single freeze. That is why I got surprised with this freeze [14:41] Alvin : Should I download a beta 10.10 from Kubuntu and install from there? [14:41] which might remove all old settings etc.? [14:41] I have a machine here with an Intel card and only X. (no gnome/kde) It crashes several times a day since Jaunty. It's a known bug (not the same as yours) [14:42] Though that will be a pain. [14:42] Aray: Well, I'd look for an existing bug report first [14:42] alvin: Oh! that means is it Intel driver? [14:42] Most probably [14:42] alvin: I also think it's intel driver. [14:43] alvin: But once I tried with an older intel driver long back, that time I had no freeze [14:43] Intel is doing a lot of changes in their driver. It works faster, but not more sttable [14:43] alvin: Ok [14:44] alvin: but I have one question? How then Ubuntu never freezed? are they using some other driver? [14:45] I love Kubuntu - that is why I intend to use it this time and ready to face the freezes D: [14:45] Alvin: I am now working with just the desktop effects as on and all filters as off [14:45] Alvin: No further crash since then. [14:46] till now [14:46] Aray: There is a difference in Gnome/KDE. KDE uses some new functions that Gnome doesn't (if I understand it correctly) [14:46] Alvin: I understand. I also thought so. [14:47] Alvin:One thing I forgot I am using oxygen transparent . Is that a reason for freezing? [14:47] There are issues with nVidia drivers too, but I haven't experienced those yet [14:47] No blur though. [14:47] Let me see. I remember reading something [14:49] Here: http://hugo-kde.blogspot.com/2010/09/performance-issues-one-script-and-call.html Oxygen issues with nVidia cards [14:50] MarkDude: Are you here? [14:54] Alvin: Thanks a lot. I will read that. [15:18] is aptitude deprecated in maverick or did I just miss it? [15:19] mbeierl: It is. It's left out to make room on the cd [15:19] it isn't installed by default [15:19] How can i adjust the amount of volume-up\down changed by my laptops volume buttons? [15:19] alvin: ah, ok, thanks. I'm never sure which is the preferred one anymore... [15:19] Well, personally, I think it's unwise. Upstream (debian in this case) recommends aptitude over apt-get in the Administration guide [15:19] some seem to indicate aptitude, others say it's apt-get [15:20] THAT'S where I read it! I knew I saw it somewhere! [15:30] I'm getting concerned about KDM. It really is not working for me on fresh install. I simply can't log in. [15:31] hm [15:31] looks like (just by coincidence and slacking) we might end up roughly syncing up w/ Ubuntu's release schedule again [15:31] Ah, it's not KDM. It's X. startx gives me a segmentation fault [15:32] I have a feeling that once again, just weeks before 10.10 release, I'm gonna pleading w/ Ubuntu managers to approve the new version [15:32] juuust like my pleading for Lucid and Karmic... [15:32] nemo: New version of what? [15:33] 10.9 catalyst is out, this is not the one we want yet right? [15:34] alvin: Hedgewars [15:34] alvin: there's a few things we still wanna finish up [15:34] but Tiyuri has been making release noises [15:35] so some of the other stuff will just have to wait for the next release I guess :) [15:35] i updated to the new kernel on 10.10 and when i booted my machine my trackpad buttons and trackpad didnt work at all [15:36] how do i fix it [15:43] i updated to the new kernel on 10.10 and when i booted my machine my trackpad buttons and trackpad didnt work at all [15:43] how do i fix it [15:43] hi dink [15:43] i updated to the new kernel on 10.10 and when i booted my machine my trackpad buttons and trackpad didnt work at all [15:44] someone help :[ [15:44] im a no0b [15:44] delta9: then whyTF are you running beta software? [20:44] pietro10: way back in the prehistoric era [20:44] when we specified this stuff ourselves [20:44] you'd add your middle mouse to the X11 mouse config [20:44] I guess you could resort to that [20:44] pietro10: might be interesting to see what xorg log file has to say about the detected mouse though [20:45] It does work on my external mouse though [20:45] and worked in 10.04 [20:45] (as far as I remembeR) [20:45] Dell Precision M6400 [20:45] meh, it's not important right now, just wondering if this was deliberate (like unconfigurable notifications and the showexec in vfat) [20:45] well. if your xorg is not detecting the mouse model for some reason [20:45] it probably fails over to basic 2 button [20:46] ok then [20:46] you could override that, buuut, yeah. would be interesting to look at the xorg log [20:46] * nemo only *has* a basic 2 button [20:46] then again, is a touchpad, and all the touchpad stuff is working just fine, including scroll [20:46] they even have the sensitivities at decent defaults for a change [20:47] Yeah, I hate the click-with-touchpad feature tbh [20:48] since I ALWAYS trigger it [20:48] my SO hates the touchpad so much she just had me disable it [20:49] the location of touchpad cries out for accidental movement w/ wrist while typing, if your angle is wrong [20:49] frankly, I hate laptops with touchpads - I've avoided subnotebooks 'cause they waste all that space just to have a touchpad [20:49] I'd rather have a nipple if I don't have an external mouse [20:49] or a couple of scrollers [20:50] there are a few subnotebooks w/o, like the my vaio, or the pandora [20:50] unfortunately the first one is windows only, and the 2nd one exists in like 500 built units so far [20:50] Also [20:50] heh, I'm happy that my thinkpad has a trackpoint for exactly the same reason, alsways have to bend my wrist when using my eeePC :/ [20:50] would it be reasonable to put in the following feature request [20:50] have the update distro process detect that you removed openjdk and respect that [20:50] IcedTea fails miserably for me [20:50] on every Linux distro I've tried that has it [20:51] pietro10: file a bug with 'ubuntu-bug update-manager' as that what we're using for upgrades usually [20:51] ok then] [20:53] pietro10: it might make sense if you file your mouse issue too with 'ubuntu-bug xorg' - xorg is probably the wrong package as I suspect the driver to be at fault, but the X team will reassign it [20:53] I'll try my external mouse first then [20:54] Hello guys... how is maverick going? [20:57] pietro10: IcedTea works reasonably well for me, except w/ my dev tools [20:57] pietro10: you know, eclipse and such [20:57] so, I leave it on, I just have stopped using it as the default === boboo is now known as coz_ [20:58] nemo: on Firefox it doesn't work [20:58] no applets, not even Java's online version detection works [20:58] better than my experience with java on mac os x [20:59] I can't wait to reinstall that thing [20:59] (software portability is an issue for me so I run win, mac, linux) [21:02] pietro10: huh. really? worked for me last time I tried... [21:03] but admittedly that hasn't been recently [21:03] hm. haven't installed sun java on this machine yet... [21:03] * nemo adds the IcedTea one [21:04] * yofel wishes the canonical devs would hurry up with sun-java6 for mav, the lucid package works fine though [21:05] interesting. openjdk was not installed by default [21:05] * Ian_corne aggrees with yofel [21:05] pietro10: aight. link me to some applet that failed horribly for you in openjdk? [21:05] altho this ensures more testing of openjdk [21:05] which isn't bad [21:05] I was thinking of trying that nifty NASA world winds [21:06] (open source and not a stupid crude bundling of google earth like Google's plugin that is not linux compat) [21:06] shame they haven't paid for the road data [21:07] yofel: one thing that doesn't seem to work quite as well in maverick - fingerprint gui [21:07] works for sudo/gksudo, login, su on VT [21:07] does not seem to work right for gdm and gnome-screensaver and su in a gnome terminal [21:08] pattern there seems to be "Gnome" [21:08] hum. works for gksudo though [21:08] I usually don't use my fingerprint reader for anything else than the bios PW and windows yet ^^ [21:08] never bothered to read the documentation [21:13] is there a way to change the ubuntu logo at the login screen ? like with a custom avatar or whatever ? [21:15] ubuntutweak does that [21:15] ubuntu-tweak [21:16] is ubuntu tweak available for 10.10 yet ? [21:18] yofel: setting it up under linux is pretty easy w/ the fingerprint gui project [21:19] yofel: nice gui for recording fingerprints. the only bit that was manual was enabling it in pam, which I'm guessing he didn't automate just because he wants to be sure it is done slowly and carefully :) [21:19] yofel: but the parts that aren't working for me apparently used to work in 10.04 ... so hopefully he figures out what changed [21:19] hm, maybe I'll look at it when I get the time [21:19] is nice to just do sudo *swipe* instead of typing [21:20] yofel: oh. doesn't work for that polkit nonsense, but then polkit fails at everything [21:20] ever tried using it w/ ssh -YC or nxclient ? :( [21:20] * nemo hates polkit [21:20] soooo frustrating to do remote support and the only way to get it to work is a VNC session 'cause polkit prevents anything else [21:21] polkit seems to follow the recent trend towards "just support the desktop" [21:35] I'm not used to apt-get. How can I see what version of the nvidia driver is installed through the nvidia-current package? [21:35] if you know the package name... apt-cache policy blah [21:37] Dink: Thanks [21:37] Another question. By messing with xorg.conf (well, adding 2 lines) the Ubuntu splash screen appears. This is kubuntu with no extra packages installed. How can I get the kubuntu splash back? [21:39] Hmm, the reason for the splash screen is probably the installation of nvidia-current [21:40] This also scales down the resolution of said splash [21:42] Well, away with the splash! Who needs it anyway? [21:42] lol [21:42] u like maverick alvin? [21:43] alvin: you have the hardware drivers installed? [21:43] Yes, most of them are in the kernel. nvidia is the only proprietary driver. [21:43] It messes with the splash screen (conflict between the nvidia driver and plymouth) [21:44] I remember that this was also the case with Lucid. It was fixed then. [21:45] http://pastie.org/1163621 [21:45] I updated today, and kdm now crashes when I try to log in [21:45] that's my /var/log/kdm.log [21:45] There are good technical reasons for those problems, and they can be avoided by using an open source driver like nouveau. Unfortunately, X segfaults when using nouveau [21:45] with a segfault in it [21:46] nouveau works fine here (well, mostly), just the experimental 3D support is crappy [21:47] yofel: Maybe it's not on all cards, but that paste from drdozer looks the same crash I'v been experiencing. It's impossible to start X. [21:47] alvin - nouveau, as of the last day or two? [21:48] drdozer: Might I suggest you put a tick at "this affects me too" here: bug 640596 [21:48] Launchpad bug 640596 in xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu) "KDM: X crashes on login" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/640596 [21:48] drdozer: Yes, only since yesterday [21:48] anything unusual abut your system? I'm running 2 30" monitors which means I have an unusually wide screen [21:50] No, it's a T61p Lenovo notebook. The Graphics card is pretty uniaue though. Quadro FX570m (only be found in this model....) [21:50] mine is an off-the-shelf from PC world card [21:50] But Kubuntu has been working fine (well, the graphics part) since Breezy Badger. [21:50] it was fine until 2 days ago :( [21:51] there was a recent mesa update, might have been that [21:52] any ideas how I can at least work around it? [21:52] If you have a launcpad account, please set the bug to confirmed so it can be triaged. [21:52] Workaround is $ sudo jockey-text -e xorg:nvidia_current [21:52] nope, it doesn't seem to give me the option to confirm [21:53] This might screw DPI, but that's a known bug in several distro's [21:53] drdozer: click on the arrow besides 'New' in the status bar on launchpad [21:53] oh cool - it's now confirmed [21:54] Good. I'll nominate for Maverick [21:55] drdozer: i reinstalled my nvidia drivers and kdm now lets me login. used to loop around [21:55] Yes, in the meantime, the proprietary drivers will have to do [21:56] ok [21:57] KukNut: the nuveau ones, or the proprietary ones? [21:57] drdozer: proprietary [21:58] drdozer: i don't use nouveau [21:59] seems to be stuck on "Searching for available drivers" but perhaps that is my laughably narrow broadband === jtechidna is now known as JontheEchidna [22:35] My calendar (left click clock) is floating mid screen. Which file in home is responsible for this? [22:40] never mind. It's bug #631664 [22:40] Launchpad bug 631664 in gnome-panel (Ubuntu Maverick) "Clock / calendar / locations applet opens on wrong position of screen" [Low,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/631664 [22:52] what's up with samba ? does not behave lately huh //& [22:54] Indeed it doesn't [22:57] evening [22:58] hey BUGabundo [22:58] (you are running 64bit flash again btw?) [22:58] not yet [22:58] I've downloaded it [22:59] but not installed [22:59] works fine here, it's nice to get rid of those regular npviewer.bin segfaults in dmesg :P [22:59] true [22:59] are we pulling it from updates? [23:00] I don't see anything in my updates [23:00] not yet I think, I installed it manually [23:01] kk [23:01] let me just finish my batch of updates [23:01] then ill purge np [23:06] huh? byobus network traffic info changed from B/s to bps, makes sense I guess.. [23:17] back again [23:17] I typed: sudo jockey-text -e xorg:nvidia_current [23:17] it printed out "Searching for available drivers..." [23:18] and then afer a long time of downloading things very slowly, exited [23:18] nothing else printed [23:18] is that what it was meant to do? [23:25] ok, just rebooted and logged into kde [23:25] it seems to be ignoring my xorg.conf and only using one monitor [23:26] or perhaps the xorg is set up right for nuveau, but not for the nvidia driver [23:28] I've been able to enable it again with nvidia-settings [23:32] I downloaded 10.10 beta and burned the image once with k3b and once with brasero. Booting from each CD, I got the message that the kernel was corrupted. Why? [23:36] sburwood: checked the checksum of the downloaded iso? [23:37] How do I do that? [23:37] yofel: how do I do that? [23:37] wait for release [23:37] !checksum [23:37] To verify your Ubuntu ISO image (or other files for which an MD5 checksum is provided), see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM or http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/LQ_ISO/Checking_the_md5sum_in_Windows [23:39] yofel: thx. As you can see, I'm a relative n00b [23:39] bye [23:44] yofel: you ever heard of bad image loading ? [23:44] like I have 14MPx photos hear that look very pixelized [23:45] I *really* *really* *really* *really* *really* *really* *really* hope its not the camara... and rather bad lib decoding :( [23:45] Say, I wish somebody would adopt fatELF: http://icculus.org/fatelf/ [23:45] Nifty idea -- one CD for both 32-bit and 64-bit. [23:47] depends, checked the compression settings in the camera? [23:47] http://dl.dropbox.com/u/112892/DSC00007.JPG [23:47] its set to max quality [23:47] Super Fine [23:47] -> 404 [23:47] uploadin [23:48] its 5MBs each [23:49] yofel: should be fine now [23:49] o.O [23:50] ? [23:50] that looks like an oil painting to me tbh. [23:50] yep [23:50] me too [23:50] never seen a picture like that [23:50] see what I'm talking about? [23:50] of this is cam, its going back right now [23:50] BUGabundo: looks like a perfect example of wayyyyy to high iso for that amoung t light [23:50] all photos look like that [23:51] Tetsuo55: its on auto [23:51] try not using super fine [23:51] see what happens [23:52] maybe the auto isnt so smart, or exposure is too long, does it have a flash? [23:52] hey is there an alternate installer for ubuntu 10.10 [23:52] hello [23:52] let me do a stupid thing: format the SD [23:53] _they_ recommend it [23:53] that sounds pointless but go ahead [23:53] I am using Unetbootin to make a bootable usb 10.10 and it has been stuck on 4% for like 15mins now [23:53] but the usb activity light still is blinking [23:53] BUGabundo: its cleary something wrong with the cameras ISO or shutter time [23:54] anyway gtg [23:54] nite [23:54] is there an alternate installer for ubuntu 10.10 [23:56] the_bot_died_las: there is [23:56] can you link the torrent? [23:56] of it? [23:56] ? [23:57] * yofel doesn't know anything about unetbootin [23:57] the_bot_died_las: of the daily iso? [23:57] wait, not sure if that even has a torrent [23:57] of the alterternate installer iso [23:57] give me a minute [23:57] k [23:58] how can I see in CLI if something is writing to my usb>? [23:59] the_bot_died_las: scroll to the bottom and select the torrent of the alternate cd you need http://ftp.stw-bonn.de/ubuntu-cd//10.10/
