[11:58] sure its about 7:00am but [11:58] still [12:00] !ask [12:00] Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) [12:00] !anyone [12:00] A large amount of the first questions asked in this channel start with "Does anyone/anybody..." Why not ask your next question (the real one) and find out? [12:02] i dont have a question [12:02] im just suprised there is nobody talking [12:02] thanks anyways psycho_oreos [12:03] not everyone is free and available for chat [12:05] true [12:06] 55 people that arent an op, so you'd think somebody was talking [12:06] however we are [12:07] ok, so for a real question what are good music players for xubuntu/ubuntu? [12:07] I like quodlibet [12:07] and Sonata [12:08] audacious if you like the old winamp [12:08] how about a player that supports multiple file types? [12:08] audacious and xmms for me [12:08] vlc [12:09] jrmy: what do you mean by 'multiple file types'? all of them support multiple types [12:09] jrmy: mp3, wav, ogg, flac... [12:09] well exaile is having a problem with playing .spc [12:09] spc is the native of snes [12:10] and even though i have the plugin installed from the software center it is still not working [12:10] jrmy: what plugin exactly? [12:11] libopenspc0 [12:12] so the library of it [12:12] idk what librarys are so much [12:12] but whatever [12:12] the players need to be made aware of the library for decoding the file, check under your chosen music player [12:12] that's just a library, not a plugin [12:12] and it worked with rythymbox [12:13] jrmy: then why not use ruthmbox? [12:13] rythmbox* [12:13] i wanna try some prefered music players [12:13] last i remember vlc was a nice player [12:13] not just for music but video too [12:14] it's mostly a video player, not so nice for music [12:14] preference = taste [12:14] the playlist is rather basic [12:14] ok [12:14] almost as primitive as the windows media player [12:15] try mplayer and compare :) [12:16] and how about a music player that doesnt require lots of resource? [12:16] consider CLI based [12:16] and what is CLI? [12:17] !cli [12:17] The linux terminal or command-line interface is very powerful. Open a terminal via Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal (Gnome) or K-menu -> System -> Konsole (KDE). Guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal or type in it: man intro [12:17] ah and i'd liek a player that can close out and be in the tray [12:17] so i can use the terminal to play music? [12:18] yes, with the right program [12:18] i might liek this [12:18] which programs are there? [12:18] what* [12:19] you won't like it because it does not minimise to tray as per your previous requirements [12:19] just looking at what is out there [12:19] i'd prefer something that could but if it were terminal based i wouldnt care [12:19] afaik there are specific ones lik play or mpg123, etc [12:20] s/lik/like/ [12:20] mplayer is another command line based as well [12:20] is mplayer music only? [12:21] no [12:21] ok [12:26] ive been wondering about a program that can use a smart phone as a web cam, is there something liek this? [12:45] jrmy: you can also use mpd [12:45] !info mpd [12:46] mpd (source: mpd): Music Player Daemon. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.15.4-1ubuntu3 (lucid), package size 174 kB, installed size 508 kB [12:46] jrmy: it's a daemon, it stays in the background and plays, and you use a variety of clients, graphical or text, to control it [12:46] jrmy: I even use that to control the player from my cellphone [12:47] you'd have to explain that more and what daemon is [12:51] daemon is a program that runs in the background without any user interface [12:52] for exmaple, mail daemon waits for your e-mails and puts them into your mailbox when it receives them [12:54] ok [12:55] then i assume mpd uses very little resource [12:57] ok in the update manager its saying firefox gnome support.. i assume i dont need this since my DE is xfce correct? [13:02] TheSheep [13:03] and does mpd require anything else? [13:04] jrmy: well, it depends on a bunch of libraries for playing music [13:04] jrmy: you will also need a client for controlling it, I like Sonata [13:04] is that the recommended player? [13:04] or whatever its called [13:05] there is a howto an mpd here: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-5194.html [13:05] no, wait, that's about installing it from source, you don't want that [13:07] http://www.shellperson.net/installing-mpd-mpc-in-ubuntu-9-10-karmic-koala/ [13:07] this one looks ok [14:06] idk if im gonna use mpd [14:06] i think i'll figure that out later [14:39] might go with a terminal based music player [14:50] * vassi waves hi to you all [14:53] !hi [14:53] Hi! Welcome to #xubuntu! Feel free to ask questions and help people out. The channel guidelines are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines . Enjoy your stay! [16:31] hi [17:10] .I'm looking for help or advise... my xubuntu installs keep crashing when I try to grab and move a window... I have no idea why... [17:10] I need help... [17:11] what version of Xubuntu? [17:11] l10.04 [17:12] xubuntu or lubuntu? [17:12] the latest... [17:12] xubuntu [17:12] sorry typo [17:12] okay [17:13] I tried wiping and reloading it twice but it still does it whenever I try to move a window around... [17:22] I also had this problem when I had an earlier install of Karmic Ubuntu, but an update later fixed it [17:24] And you have run the latest updates ? [17:25] yes, yesterday, but now I see that there are 9 more... [17:25] doing that now... [17:29] these ones are just for firefox, thunderbird, apt, and something called unreadahead [17:36] Ok... i ran a check after it installed all the new updates from today and now it has added a Linux kernel image... I need to reboot... I will test it and return with results, ok? [17:38] yup === bazhang_ is now known as bazhang
