poolnoodleor it would be really cool of you to help out this poor eMac user on a distro that has kde402:24
poolnoodleim in a state of love for KDE especially over OS X02:24
RunningAimhello..i have installed the latest ubuntu server and i have installed gnome.first question is whether i can make the system work as a domain so windows users can connect to it...and second question is whether i can resize my hard drive which is lvm.02:28
poolnoodlelvm is alot harder to resize02:29
poolnoodleif you made a volume you might have to resize two partitions02:30
poolnoodleand the domain? samba?02:30
RunningAimbasically what i did was the following..i installed the system on part of the hard drive...left some space for a partion..but i tried with gparted to enable the second partition and it was nowhere to be found..as the lvm has taken the space02:31
dasKreechpoolnoodle: if there is a Ubuntu Release for PPC you can install the Server and then apt-get install kubuntu-desktop02:40
dasKreechask in #ubuntu-ppc02:40
dasKreechRunningAim: Yes instal samba and read the documentation for it02:41

poolnoodleyou have to set kde to qtcurve too05:19
vbgunz__oh05:20
vbgunz__I think I might know what you're saying cause I am bugging out here. you're saying I have to overwrite gtkrc with the new theme and leave it on qtcurve?05:21

sithlord48sogreg: do you have a wired internet connection?15:44
sogregsithlord48: no i do not15:45
sithlord48sogreg: i think what u need to do is check to see if you have a restricted driver availble for you wifi , it may get it to work better, get online, and use the program "jockey" to see if you have properitary drivers taht can be installed15:46
sogregsithlord48: thank you very much ill give that a try15:46

sogregsithlord48: so but it was suggested to me yesterday to try it they said knet had bugs sometimes15:55
sogregsithlord48: no*15:56
sithlord48sogreg: it think its your driver, or soemthign else15:56
sithlord48sogreg: it worked correctly w/ knetworkmanager?15:56
sogregsithlord48: no i was having the same problems with knet, only difference was i didnt notice i was losing signal and couldnt see any available networks until wicd15:57

NewbieInLinuxI have 10.04 discs and 10.04.1 discs and 10.04.1 crashed in making user19:06
James147NewbieInLinux: if 10.04 works then use that... 10.04.1 is just 10.04 with more updates (so you have less to upgrade after you install)19:07
NewbieInLinuxyeah i tried sometime that 10.04 and that doesnt crashed but when i tried 10.04.1 clean install and crashed19:08

James147to get the grub menu19:13
brew1brewI can get into grub and edit it, but I can't get it to safe, or even boot once on that edit19:14
brew1brewthat would be save19:14
brew1brewnot safe19:14
James147brew1brew: there should a a key you hit to boot once you ahve finished editing, cant remember what it is, but grub should tell you19:15
James147brew1brew: also note that the changes you make to grub there are tempory, there is no way to save them19:15
brew1brewI hit esc to enter grub kernal select, then e to edit, but once in and removing lines an adding lines I can't get it to save or even boot it19:15
brew1brewJames, I figured that, but I can't even get it to boot the changes once19:16
James147brew1brew: what version of kubuntu?19:16
brew1brewyes,  they key it says is b to boot, but that reboots and doesn't use the changes I made19:16
brew1brewwe are both on 10.04.119:16
brew1brewso should be on grub219:16
James147brew1brew: says crtl+x to boot here :S on the edit window19:18

NakkelAny relevant logs I should check out?19:34
James147Nakkel: try stopping dkm and running "startx" from a vertual terminal, see if it tell you anything19:34
James147kdm ^^19:34
brew1brewok, since it's 10.04.1, I assume it's grub2. so I figured out how to get to the grub mentu and manually load the kernel and boot it. so now I have to have my sister follow my instruction19:35
NakkelJames147: No visible errors and X/desktop starts fine.19:37
NakkelWeird19:37

NakkelAh there is a kdm.log, some ibus-daemon errors there.19:50
James147Nakkel: like Bus::open: Can not get ibus-daemon's address.?  .. I get those with almost every kde application :)19:52
James147(and IBusInputContext::createInputContext: no connection to ibus-daemon )...19:52
NakkelYep, those. So not the culprit then.19:53
James147Nakkel: doupt it19:53
James147Nakkel: you could try asking on #kde see if they know more about it19:54
NakkelCant even google properly as no GUI to lauch browser. Maybe links/lynx could help.19:54
contrastGreets, everyone... I have my desktop (nVidia card w/ proprietary driver) hooked up to my monitor (HDMI) *and* television (component). in order for the TV to display at the proper resolution (1920x1080), I have to unplug the monitor from the desktop before X starts up. I'm guessing this could be solved by explicitly identifying each display device in my xorg.conf and stating the resolutions for each, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that. Could someone19:55
contrastplease point me in the right direction?19:55
James147Nakkel: thourght that you can starx directly? :)19:56
NakkelAgh, yes didnt remember that thx :D19:57

James147contrast: ^^19:57
contrastThanks, James... Have you heard of the issue I'm having before?19:59
James147contrast: although with nvidia, it might be easier to use "kdesudo nvidia-settings"20:01
contrastI'm pretty sure I tried that a good while back, didn't really yield any results... Guess I could give it another go to see if it's been fixed.20:04

vbgunzI installed human-theme to try and make my GTK apps look better. Human theme looks awesome. The only thing bugging me atm is human-theme tabs take on a brownish color whereas everything else seems to be colored right. Anybody know how to fix this?21:05
brew1brew James147: thanks for your help on grub, it turnted out that it was a problem with the last kernal update.21:06
brew1brewI was able to get her to boot into the previous kernal with no problems.21:07
vbgunzanybody know how to change the human-theme tab color? it's brown and the only color so far that doesn't stick with my color choice in KDE21:11
vbgunzis the human theme based on a theme that doesn't have brown tabs? I love the widgets but the brown tabs are not cool :(21:16
fantihello! where do i find the graphics driver config in an recent kubuntu system? seems that i don't have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf anymore21:28
AHemlocksLieI'm trying to put Kubuntu on my laptop, but I'm having some issues21:31
AHemlocksLieit's a Dell Inspiron 110021:31
AHemlocksLieI put the live ISO on my flash drive and booted to it21:32
AHemlocksLieeverything goes great up through loading21:32
AHemlocksLiethe hard drive icon, tools, desktop, big K (I assume for KDE) show up21:32
AHemlocksLieand once it finishes loading everything21:32
AHemlocksLieI get a black screen21:32
AHemlocksLiebut my mouse still shows up21:32
FloodBotK1AHemlocksLie: Please don't flood, use http://paste.ubuntu.com to paste, don't use Enter as punctuation.21:32
AHemlocksLieI hit ctrl+alt+del, and the shutdown/logoff/reboot window pops up just fine, and I can use it. I hit shutdown, and the backgound pops back up, and there's a dialog box asking if I wanna stop some stuff for login. There's like 5 entries in the box, and they're all the same thing, something like "TTY: login" or something like that21:34
AHemlocksLieanyone have any ideas what the issue is and what I can do to fix it?21:36
AHemlocksLieare there seriously 276 other people here, all afk? xD21:37
anirudhahello guys22:10
anirudhamy resolution is setup to 800x600 by default and set it up to 1024x768 in system settings. It reverts back to the 800x600 after every reboot. What should I do to fix it?22:11
James147!resolution | anirudha22:12

Quaxir Does anyone have an idea what to do when Kubuntu won't let me into login screen, it jamms to that "Kubuntu" and few circles below it :S22:13
James147Quaxir: try running startx from a tty after stopping kdm, see if it tells you anything intresting22:14
QuaxirJames147: Is recovery console any good as I can't get tty from normal boot screen?22:15
James147Quaxir: o sorry :) thourght you where getting stuck after the login screen... try removing the "quite slash" from the kernal permaters in grub22:17
James147splash ^^22:17
QuaxirJames147: about that startx, interesting thingy what I see: "Fatal server error: no screens found"22:18
Quaxirbut I'll check that grub out..22:18
QuaxirJames147: now in grub, so all I should do is to remove "quiet splash" from linux-boot?22:20
James147Quaxir: yes22:20
QuaxirJames147: erm, how to save my edits to grub as if I press ESC it's not saved :). or just "ctrl-x" to get it boot?22:22
James147Quaxir: just edit it and hit crtl+x22:23
James147Quaxir: editing it is only tempory, and will only affect that boot you cannot save it at that prompt22:23
QuaxirJames147: ooke22:24
QuaxirJames147: Soo, now I'm in tty222:25
James147Quaxir: kdm did not start?22:25
Quaxirnope, and when I try "stop kde" it says: "stop: Unknown job: kde"22:25
James147Quaxir: try "sudo start kdm"22:26
anirudhahow to generate the default xorg.conf22:27
QuaxirJames147: oh, sry.. missread it.. it was kdm not kde :)22:27
QuaxirJames147: but, "start: Job is already running: kdm"22:27
James147Quaxir: alt+ctrl+F722:28
James147or F822:28
QuaxirJames147: With F7 it looks like it's trying to start up but nothing happens, last line is "* Checking battery state...    [OK]", which is kinda weird as it's not laptop o.O22:30
James147Quaxir: and F8?22:30
James147if not try "sudo restart kdm"22:31
James147from one of the ttys22:31
QuaxirJames147: F8 does nothing22:31
James147Quaxir: alt+crtl+F8 :)22:32
QuaxirJames147: Yeh, alt+ctrl+F8 does nothing :S22:32
James147Quaxir: then try restarting kdm22:32
QuaxirJames147: First it goes back to that same screen (checking battery state etc.) and then back to tty2 with line: "kdm start/running, process 1858"22:34
James147Quaxir: hmm, "sudo stop kdm"  then try "startx" (not as root)22:35
QuaxirJames147: stopping kdm seems to go fine, but startx doesn't. "Fatal server error: no screens found" and few lines below "xinit: No such file or directory (errno2): unable to connect to X server"22:38
James147:S22:38
James147Quaxir: what graphics card do you ahve?22:39
QuaxirJames147: nvidia 295GTX22:39
James147Quaxir: do you have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf?22:39
QuaxirJames147: Yes I do. Just wondering what an earth can cause sth like this as last time I booted from Kubuntu to Windows everything was fine and didn't even install anything on that boot :S22:41
James147Quaxir: try renaming that file and then run startx again22:42
James147(will cause X to auto detect the settings again)22:42
QuaxirJames147: Now tty2 (where I ran startx after renaming xorg.conf) spams line "No protocol specified"22:46
James147Quaxir: anything on crtl+alt+F7-8 (or 9)?22:46
QuaxirJames147: F7=battery checking screen, F8/F9=flickers "_", nothing else. Now in tty2 it gives up and last line: "xauth: /home/quaxir/.Xauthority not writeable, changes will be ignored"22:49
James147Quaxir: :D change the owner of that file to your user again (I am assuming its owned by root)22:50
James147Quaxir: although that dosnt explain why kdm didnt start :S22:50
QuaxirJames147: hm, how I do that :D? (done it once for another folder, but don't remember command anymore)22:51
James147Quaxir: chown USER:USER FILE22:51
QuaxirJames147: Out of ideas what's wrong =/?22:56
James147Quaxir: did that not work?22:56
QuaxirJames147: Tried startx after chowning it and result was allmost same "No protocol specified"-spam and now instead of telling .Xauthority is not writeable it says "error in locking authority file /home/quaxir/.Xauthority"22:57
James147Quaxir: whats the output of "ls -lh ~/.Xauthority"?22:58
QuaxirJames147: "-rw------- 1 quaxir quaxir 0 2010-09-20 00:04 /home/quaxir/.Xauthority"22:59
James147Quaxir: hmm, seems to be of size 0 :S  ... try renaming it23:00
QuaxirJames147: and now startx?23:01
James147yeah23:01
QuaxirJames147: yarr.. now I'm at my desktop. Resolution and screen settings are screwd however but I suppose it's because of renaming xorg.conf23:03
James147Quaxir: yeah, I would logout (should take you back to a tty) and see if sudo start kdm works23:03
QuaxirJames147: ookey23:04
QuaxirJames147: starting kdm takes me to login screen23:05
James147Quaxir: so all working then :)23:05
James147Quaxir: just need to run "sudo nvidia-xconfig" to recreate the xorg.conf then "kdesudo nvidia-settings" (from a desktop) to reset up the displays23:06
James147or you could try using the old xorg.conf, but I dont think that will work23:06
QuaxirJames147: ookey.. I'll try using that old xorg.conf as I had pretty much troubles to get it working last time :S, you might remember :D23:07
QuaxirJames147: seems that old xorg.conf doesn't work. So lets try with those you said23:10
James147Quaxir: didnt think it would :) that what was stopping kdm from starting in the first place, the .Xauthorty was just stopping you logging in23:11
QuaxirJames147: Do you know how to fix this :D. When I move my "Desktop folder"-widget to 2nd screen and click FF to open it it opens to 2nd screen instead of main screen. Is there a way to make those open in main-screen?23:27
thecdggserieshi23:27
thecdggserieshow to work tetterdeck23:27
thecdggseries?23:27
thecdggseriestwitterdeck23:27
James147Quaxir: there is, cant remeber exactly where, but windows open on the screen that currently has focus... I remember an option to change taht but cannot remember where it was...23:28
James147Quaxir: currently abusing it with focus follows mouse option :D windows open on the screen my mouse is on23:29
QuaxirJames147: heh, but how you do that as when I click sth my mouse is in 2nd screen :D23:30
James147Quaxir: they open on the screen the mouse is in when the window is shown (so there is a small delay, enough to move my mouse).. played around with vaious options in system settings (and I think nvidia-settings) to get it to work that way :)23:31
thecdggserieshi anybody use twetterdeck?23:32
QuaxirJames147: Should I use TwinView or that "Separate X screen"-option?23:37
James147Quaxir: I use twinview, seperate X screens causes problems with moving windows from one display to the other without xarama, but enabling that causing my computer to slow down horribally23:38
QuaxirJames147: Ookey, I'll stick with TwinView then.23:39
QuaxirJames147: Which font is optimal for linux-shell btw? in windows that Courier new works fine but in Kubuntu it looks veery blurry :S23:39
James147Quaxir: I am using the default in konsole "monospace"23:40
QuaxirJames147: That works a bit better at least..23:41
QuaxirJames147: What was that conky-replacement for Kubuntu? or just use conky in kubuntu aswell :S23:43
James147conky?23:43
QuaxirJames147: little program that makes a box to the screen where it shows some system-info like CPU load, ram/network usage, free HDD-space etc23:45
James147Quaxir: I would just use widgets for that :)23:45
James147Quaxir: and either put them on the desktop or the dash board23:46
QuaxirJames147: Yh, I was wondering that but no idea which widgets would do the job :D23:46
QuaxirJames147: and ye it's on desktop.. not actually a window, but anyway :P23:47
James147Quaxir: The ones under the "System information" catogory, "Memory Status", "CPU Monotior"... :)23:48
James147they should be easy to find23:48
QuaxirJames147: Any idea how to get rid of that "KDE wallet"-thingy :S, never really got what it is supposed to do in the first place..23:52
James147Quaxir: you can :) but then you have to remember every password for programs that use it :).... its essentally a program that stores your passwords for various programs (konqurer, knetworkmanager... and verious other programs use it)23:53
QuaxirJames147: hmm.. I guess I keep it :)23:57
