[01:52] hello everyone [01:54] I just finished installing Xubuntu! [01:55] Great! [01:56] at first i wasn't sure if i liked xfce as much as gnome [01:56] but now that i've customized it a little bit i think i will stay with it [01:57] It takes a little getting used to. I think a lot of that is what you are used to. [01:57] but is it okay if i ask so noob questions while i'm trying to get used to it? [01:58] sure. If anyone here knows the answer, they will give one. [01:58] okay, so when i am adding a launcher to the panel for a particular application... how do i know what the command to launch it is? [01:59] for chromium it was chromium-browser... but what would it be for xchat? [01:59] in ubuntu i would have probably gone to main menu and looked at the properties of the application [02:00] i'm trying to patch the fglrx driver as shown here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/642518 [02:01] Launchpad bug 642518 in fglrx-installer (Ubuntu Karmic) "[MASTER] package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: Kernel fix for CVE-2010-3081 breaks fglrx" [High,Fix released] [02:01] but apt-get source fglrx doesn't come back with anything [02:07] yah i figured it out [02:28] but seriously how do i figure out what the command is to launch a particular program === m00se is now known as bizkit === bizkit is now known as m00se [02:47] how do I setup Ubuntu one? [02:48] hello [02:48] ? [02:48] anyone there [02:48] ? [02:49] 'm not a spambot, so stop blocking me [02:49] 5 [02:49] how do i setup Ubuntu One? [02:51] how do i setup ubuntu one? [02:52] anyone there? [02:55] bye [03:22] Hydrozii: I look in /usr/share/applications for the menu name, then right-click on it, left-click on Open With... and choose mousepad [03:24] Hydrozii: Thanks for being patient. I was taking care of a baby :-) === mike is now known as Guest7387 [12:48] hi everybody [12:49] can i ask a question again about my xubuntu installation [12:59] hi ebahadir, for sure you can [13:00] I'm not sure if I can answer it but if I can't anyone else will [13:00] it could just take longer in that case [13:01] okay. i will format my c drive with a program [13:01] i will have two partition with name c and d [13:02] i'll change my file system to ext4, after that i'll open computer with windows [13:02] in windows, can i setup xubuntu to ext4 partition [13:02] i have iso file and a flash drive [13:03] but i my computer cant boot with flash drive [13:05] Windows does not support ext4 :/ [13:05] you'll need to install Windows first and create the partions you want (C and D) [13:05] then you need to install Xubuntu [13:06] you can either burn the .iso onto a CD or put it onto the flash drive, but I recommend the first methode if you can't the flash drive [13:06] *can't boot the flash drive [13:06] okay. Thanks for support. [13:07] i'll try now [13:07] no problem [13:57] I had xubuntu in a virtualbox... I had to restart X on the host due to running out of memory (Ctrl-Alt-Bksp) during a time in which xubuntu was installing via aptitude.... now when I try to load the xubuntu virtual machine it takes me to the session controller (I forget which one xubuntu uses)... I select my username and type my password. The screen (ie the vbox window) flashes a couple of times, then I'm returned to the session control s [13:57] creen. If I try to use a non valid account it says ;Authentication Failure'.... so there's something going on here... X is dying before it loads I think.... is there a way I can boot to a terminal in xubuntu? I can't use ctrl-alt-F1 because it runs on the host machine (though maybe I should check to see if I can force it to be sent to the vbox...) [13:58] in virtualbox, normally, rt-ctrl+F1 should switch to a tty [14:04] charlie-tca: well, there you go... now how to figure out how to fix things... [14:07] check your permissions in /home/USER ; make sure you as the USER own the files [14:08] (at least the dot files [15:57] Hi My login screen shows the resolution of 800 x 600 while I have my session set up to 1024x768 can anyone tell me how to configure gdm so that it uses the same resolution as my session ? [18:15] can anyone tell me how to setup resolution for gdm ? [18:19] sagarchalise: this helps - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution [18:21] charlie-tca, its not total resolution problem but rather my login screen has low resolution than my sessions [18:21] charlie-tca, my login screen displays in 800x600 [18:22] not so much to be done about that. Login is different [20:55] all, im trying to figure out why thunar wont let me drag .wad files [for doom] to /usr/share/games/doom [20:55] ive tried googling, and ubuntu forums, but no luck so far [20:55] will some one help me? [20:56] alt+f2: gksudo thunar [20:56] check first if you have hidden files in home folder (ctrl h) [20:56] i press alt+f2 after it is started? [20:56] if you could put those files there [20:58] i gess i have to start from term, thx [21:50] that gkthunar solution worked for me btw, thanks again [21:50] :) [22:15] I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and now volume buttons on my laptop do not work or show notifications. Know where I can start to look for fix? [22:40] I am trying to write a script that mounts a file, allows a user to perform some actions, then umounts the file. I have a perfectly working copy of it already that calls nautilus to allow the user to do what they want. I tried simply replacing nautilus with thunar, but thunars behavior is to go into the background and then return back to the script (which then unmounts the directory) Is there a way to use thunar in a script so that it waits un [22:40] til the window is closed before returning control to the script? [23:19] hello [23:20] i recently installed minecraft.jar [23:20] and i cant figure out how to mark it as executable in xfce [23:20] nice [23:20] it was easy in gnome [23:20] any idea how i can mark it as executable? [23:21] Hydrozi use a launcherr [23:21] *launcher [23:21] so the command is just minecraft.jar? [23:21] no [23:21] Hydrozii, run 'chmod 0755 minecraft.jar' good luck getting it to run [23:21] ill try it right now [23:22] "java -jar "location/of/minecraft.jar" [23:22] Hydrozii: ^ ^ ^ [23:24] how can I keep thunar from return control to the command line until the window is closed [23:25] i still cant get it to run [23:25] ok then, that idea is going straight to the recycle bin [23:26] "java -jar "location/of/minecraft.jar" [23:26] Hydrozii: ^ ^ ^ [23:26] you have java installed? [23:26] yes [23:26] FusionX: your quotes don't make sense [23:26] what other file managers are available besides thunar and nautilus [23:26] ""s [23:27] oops [23:27] pfifo: how does your scrip look like? (about) [23:27] java -jar "location/of/minecraft.jar" [23:27] Hydrozii, your entire effort is pretty much futile, Ive spent several hours trying to get minecraft running in linux with no success, I reccomment Windows or virtualbox [23:28] i had it running perfectly in ubuntu yesterday [23:28] i know several guys playing minecraft on linux [23:28] pfifo: its posssible, i am able to run itt. [23:28] Sysi, mount -o ; thunar /dir/to/stuff; umount *it [23:29] pfifo: what if you replace ; with && ? [23:29] Sysi, the umount command gets run prematurely cause thunar exits after being called [23:29] in ubuntu there was an option to mark as executable under the properties of minecraft.jar [23:29] pfifo: it shouldn't [23:29] in xubuntu there is no option [23:29] Sysi, no, thats just a single line version, there are no ; in my script cause i can use seprate lines [23:29] Hydrozii: you can't right click and "run"? [23:30] Hydrozii: try that commandline method [23:30] no i get an error telling me its not marked as executable [23:30] ill paste the error [23:30] pfifo: i think you should have &&, it couls make that work [23:30] i'm not sure [23:31] just create a launcher with that command Hydrozii [23:31] The file '/home/***/Downloads/Minecraft.jar' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit. [23:31] ill try, but not right now, my mom is playing farmvill and I cant get on [23:31] with the command [23:31] :/ [23:31] pfifo: no, seems not to work [23:32] i tried that command and it doesn't do anything [23:32] *-jar [23:32] yah thats what i meant srry [23:32] typo [23:32] check path [23:33] it does work if u havve java installed. [23:33] propably /home/user/something [23:33] it doesnt give me an error or anything [23:33] Sysi, I was thinking it wouldn't thunar exits immedatly and runs the unmount, it needs to stay in the foreground [23:33] *have [23:33] yah im pretty sure i got the path right [23:33] pfifo: sleep or something to the script? [23:33] OpenJDK java 6 Runtime [23:33] (i'm not very familiar with bash actually [23:33] i have that installed [23:34] if it doesn't say anything it should work [23:34] no i click on the launcher and nothing at all happens [23:34] No that wont work, im mounting an SD card here and the length of time that the contents need to be displayed could vary [23:34] weird [23:34] Hydrozii: cd to tthe directory where u have minecraft.jar and run "java -jar minecraft.jar" [23:35] Hydrozii: it doesn't print anything on cli either? [23:35] alright ill cd [23:35] chmod a+x maybe worth a try [23:36] yeah [23:36] chmod a+x? [23:36] yees [23:36] as the command? [23:36] cd doesnt work either btw [23:37] FusionX, you should make a minecraft .deb if you got it working [23:37] Hydrozii: "doesn't work"? [23:37] im on XP currently [23:37] later maybe [23:38] yes i changed the directory to downloads.. where i downloaded it... and then changed the command to java -jar minecraft.jar [23:38] also i tried the command java -jar "minecraft.jar" [23:39] restart ur computer and try and run the command again [23:39] alright i guess thats always an option [23:39] brb [23:41] no change [23:42] when did u install java? [23:43] Hydrozii [23:44] like an hour ago [23:44] what java do you exactly have? [23:44] from default repositories? [23:44] can u play minecraft online Hydrozii? [23:45] no i cant [23:45] IIF U KEEP GETTING A BLANK SCREEN ONLINE< U HAVE THE WRONG JAVA INSTALLED> [23:46] oops [23:46] wrong java> [23:46] OpenJDK Java 6 Runtime [23:46] thats the one i have now [23:46] you need sun/oracle one [23:46] i downloaded from the default repositories i believe [23:47] Hydrozii did u use 'install missing plugins' in firefox? [23:47] i use chromium [23:48] so no...? [23:48] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes#Sun%20Java%20moved%20to%20the%20Partner%20repository [23:48] you maybe should remove the other java [23:48] Hydrozii how did u install java? [23:48] ubuntu software center [23:49] FusionX: he said from default repo, so it's wrong one [23:49] oh [23:49] yeah [23:49] okay so how do i download it from the default repo [23:49] ? [23:49] check url i gave [23:49] alright [23:49] and as said you maybe should remove the other java [23:52] so after adding the new repository and removeing old java [23:52] i should just search for the sun java in the ubuntu software center? [23:53] remove the other java and then follow those commands https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes#Sun%20Java%20moved%20to%20the%20Partner%20repository [23:53] after updating "sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre" should work [23:55] minecraft should work after that [23:55] with the command [23:56] ugh... well i thought i added the repository [23:57] apt-get install isnt working right [23:57] is there some way to specify the repository ? [23:57] you did apt-get update? [23:57] yes [23:57] does it list that partner repository? [23:58] i'm not exaxtly sure about package name [23:58] what is the partner repository called? [23:58] partner [23:59] no i guess not [23:59] ill try the apt-add-repository again
