AemaethI did the lastest update to linux-image-2.6.32-25-generic and then I can no longer get to xubuntu, it loads up a grub gnu bootloader shell thing, I don't know what to do at this point, all i did was update :(07:27

TheSheepAemaeth: any messages before loading the shell?08:04
Aemaethno :(08:11
Aemaethhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/503732/  this is what i see, i just rebooted after doing the livecd grub fix and same screen08:12
Aemaethmy solutions looks like is going to be "Never update" and i'm slowly accepting that fact.  but this seems to be the only machine having this problem :(08:14
Aemaethmaybe when they update the live cd/install cd to the .25 generic pae, it will install like that (i hope) but for now i think i should cut my losses and stick with .2108:16
Aemaethseemed to have a problem installing grub to /dev/sda if that helps any, had to install to /dev/sda1, BUT the original install did not have this problem, faulty memory maybe?08:18
Aemaethonto my 3rd install round!  wish me luck?08:37
Aemaethi've learned my lesson, ignore red numbers with exclamation points, they bring trouble08:38
Aemaethit says i'm erasing ubuntu, is that what happened?08:40
MidnightCommando'sup guys10:27
MidnightCommandoi've got just a little bit of trouble with the xubuntu 10.04 desktop amd64 disc.10:27
MidnightCommandonamely, the damned thing's useless. sha256 checks out, i've tried multiple CDs and at multiple speeds, even a USB stick via unetbootin10:27
MidnightCommandoofficial ubuntu CDs start just fine10:28
MidnightCommandoas do other livecds i've burned10:28
MidnightCommandothis livecd, however, refuses under any circumstances to boot, inf act my computer acts like it's not even there. has anyone had this problem?10:28
* MidnightCommando for nick in #channel, do poke $nick, done11:10
chomwitttrying to install 10.04 in a school lab with pentium4s and 200MB i noticed install times over 2hours. The lab has 64Kbs isdn connection so i guess it must bandwidth issue. can i do a cdrom only install?13:24
psycho_oreosI believe so yes, but you still need to update it13:26
chomwittpsycho_oreos: i could use apt-cache for the update procude.13:26
MidnightCommandooooh, activity13:27
psycho_oreoschomwitt, yeah but I'm not sure whether or not you still need the signing keys or you'll need to manually add your own13:27
psycho_oreosMidnightCommando, what's your computer spec?13:28
MidnightCommandoi am attempting to run 10.04 amd64 desktop as a livecd ... alas my livecds fail to boot, and making the xubuntu iso into a liveusb also failed. suggestions? i can't believe the release team would put out a broken release, because someone would have noticed... obviously i'm doing something wrong. can has halp?13:28
psycho_oreosmore specifically what is the CPU13:29
MidnightCommandopsycho_oreos: amd athlon64+ x2 ... gigabyte motherboard with latest BIOS flash, pioneer dvr-118 on EIDE, one harddrive (320G) for /, /boot, and swap, one 1.5TB drive for /home, both on internal SATA13:29
MidnightCommandooh and the MBR of the system drive is trashed so i've been using a boot floppy for a month or three. >_>13:30
chomwittpsycho_oreos: thanks13:30
MidnightCommando (tl;dr no i am not runnning 64-bit code on a 32-bit cpu, if that's what you're thinking)13:30
moetunesdid you do the md5 check on the iso?13:31
MidnightCommandono. i did sha25613:31
MidnightCommandowhich checked out.13:31
moetunesk13:31
psycho_oreosMidnightCommando, no, but are you sure that your computer can boot usb? I have amd x2 sitting right next to me with msi mobo and there's no bios updates to make it boot usb13:32
psycho_oreoswhy not give the i386 version a try?13:32
MidnightCommandopsycho_oreos: absolutely sure, the BIOS Boot Priority Selection explicitly lists USB devices13:32
MidnightCommandopsycho_oreos: because i need to chroot into a 64-bit environment.13:32
MidnightCommandoi'm pulling a bit of a rescue mission.13:32
MidnightCommandoi'd use the disc i'm on atm (kubuntu 7.10 amd64) for it, but it doesn't have ext4 which is a HUGE problem13:33
MidnightCommandohrm psycho_oreos is it possible that one of the mirroring sites holds a corrupt verstion of the iso?13:38
MidnightCommandobecause i did kind of grab the file from the internode mirror. over ftp.13:38
psycho_oreosunlikely but possible13:40
MidnightCommandomeh13:42
MidnightCommandoan md5 collision is extremely improbable for mere corruption, and the md5s match up to another server (ftp.ubuntu.com)13:42
MidnightCommandothis is puzzling13:43
moetunesif the iso checks out it might be a bad burn - tried the cd chesk?13:44
moetunesor check even?13:44
MidnightCommandomoetunes: cd check would work if i got to ISOLINUX13:46
MidnightCommandoi don't13:46
MidnightCommandoi don't know if it's possible to checksum a cd against a file?13:46
MidnightCommando(also, the cd burn being at fault is not really likely given the liveUSB attempt failed spectacularly)13:47
moetunesyou don't even get to the cd's menu?13:48
MidnightCommandomoetunes: "computer acts like it's not even there" as i described earlier13:49
MidnightCommandoi still can't think of a better way to put it13:49
MidnightCommando:(13:49
moetunesMidnightCommando:  if the cd will work in another comp you might have h/ware issues...13:50
MidnightCommandoprecluded again by the liveUSB booting as far as the unetbootin loader and then failing13:51
MidnightCommandoand the fact that other CDs boot without issue13:52
moetunesofc - I should pay more attention13:53
MidnightCommandooh and by the way13:53
MidnightCommandoi don't know if i'm showing any attitude atm, i find it difficult to discern at the best of times :P but if so, i do apologise.13:53
moetunesit's all fine :]13:54
moetunesI'm watching a movie here atm so my attention is split13:54
MidnightCommandoi think i'm going to attempt another boot run in case it's just One Of Those Gremlins13:59
MidnightCommandoat this point i don't want to download another livecd13:59
moetunesgood luck :]13:59
MidnightCommandoso, thanks everyone, i'll brb - just need to detach and reboot.13:59
MidnightCommandowish i could say i had better luck14:09
moetunesbummer14:10
MidnightCommandonow have to wait an hour for off-peak so i can go grab an iso of linux-mint-xfce or something14:11
MidnightCommandoi'm starting to suspect xubuntu jsut doesn't like me as much as it used to14:11
MidnightCommando(i had 7.10 when i was doing my first gentoo install a while back, it was /flawless/ on this hardware)14:12
MidnightCommandothanks kindly for all your help, guys! much appreciated :)14:13
* MidnightCommando exit stage left14:13
wbadgerhi, when I close a terminal window (or type exit) the program gets stuck. If I try to kill it it just gets defunct but the process never dies. does anyone know what could cause this? btw I have several more issues but I don't know if they are connected.16:43
eeffoc<wbadger>, the terminal window itself gets stuck?16:59
wbadgeryes17:05
wbadgerI then get the message "This window might be busy and is not responding.Do you want to terminate the application?"17:05
eeffocHmm, I haven't seen that one -- I'll have to search around a bit. Have you checked the ubuntu forum site yet?17:10
wbadgereeffoc, sorry, I didn't. I'll try that17:13
eeffocI wish I was more help! Sorry >_< Does the message allow you to select 'yes' or 'no', thus terminating the terminal successfully, or does it still hang?17:13
eeffocIt isn't a full screen terminal, is it?17:15
wbadgerthe message does allow me that, and it isn't full screen. And thank you17:16
TheSheepwbadger: you could try using strace to see what the program is doing17:19
wbadgerTheSheep, I tried. I saw nothing special, it ended with "exit_group(127)                         = ?"17:20
chomwitti installed 10.04 in a virtual machine with no network atall and i see that it has the same packages. So why in the installation a slow connection can make the installation so slow?17:21
TheSheepchomwitt: maybe it checks for updates?17:22
charlie-tcaA slow connection means it will still download some of the packages. No connection means it will not even attempt the downloads17:26
chomwittTheSheep: is there a debug way to see what installer is doing?17:26
TheSheepchomwitt: there is the install log17:27
chomwitti installed over 10 pc last week in two school labs in greece. except for the installation delay in the slow internet case i also noted that the first time i boot the system is very slow.. when i reboot its ok!. It sounds strange, but the same happend now in my virtual xubuntu!!17:29
chomwittnevertheless in the one lab everything is ok now. Xubuntu saw ok an old msi p4 mobo , sound ok ,microphone ok,web cam ok ,scanner ok! So a great thanks to xubuntu and foss!17:30
chomwittTheSheep: i'll try to find the install log. thanks!17:31
charlie-tcachomwitt: /var/log/installer17:31
eeffocAnyone know how to make the panel STAY? I can use ALT17:47
eeffocerrr. ALT + F2 and run XFCE4-Panel17:47

hagghello, i just tried to install qtcreator on a fresh install of xubuntu lucid lynx. qtdesigner works, qtdemos works, but qtcreator takes one whole cpu-core for ~1min, a window pops up and closes immediatly. no error messages.19:48
haggany idea what might cause this?19:49
haggi tested it on my "default" xubuntu system, same behaviour19:50
Sysihagg: start it in terminal and see if it gives error messages20:16
haggno error messages, tried it already in a terminal20:17
haggwindow opens, closes immediatly, and the shell-prompt shows (process exited, i guess)20:17
Sysidoes it have -v or something verbose?20:18
haggno, just a parameter for version according to manpage and --help output20:20
haggwait a moment, i am going to strace it20:21
hagghttp://codepad.org/oATSUYqK  <- latest 42 lines of strace output20:25
Sysiyou should propably file a bug20:26
