penguin42ok, I've seen other people have problems with 960000:00
penguin42mark2010: Do you know if you have fglrx or not?00:00
mark2010believe the open driver after the upgrade to 10.1000:00
penguin42but you had the closed one before?00:00
mark2010don't know00:01
penguin42what does jockey-text -l say ?00:01
mark2010on 10.04 there were no propietary drivers so i guess it was the open driver00:01
penguin42ok, can you try booting with the kernel option nomodeset00:02
mark2010got no info from jockey-text -l00:03
penguin42ok00:03
mark2010boot to kernal with nomodeset ... how do i do that00:04
=== cjae is now known as kubuntu1010
penguin42mark2010: Do you know how to get to the grub menu?00:05
mark2010GRUB shows up fine when i turn the pute on00:05
androidbrucethis is my kb layout http://imgur.com/LMUVA.png00:06
mark2010or do you mean a file?00:06
androidbruceon the left it says, compose and not ctrl00:06
penguin42ok, so in the grub menu it'll let you edit an entry and when it does move down to the kernel line which will probably end in splash quiet   and just add on the   nomodeset and tell it to boot00:06
mark2010this is on reboot, correct?00:07
penguin42yep00:07
penguin42it won't keep the change so it doesn't matter if it doesn't work00:08
mark2010right after quiet splash or next line?00:09
penguin42mark2010: Same line00:09
mark2010i'll try it. thanx00:09
yofelandroidbruce: shouldn't gnome give a list of keyboard layouts at the same place where you define the keyboard language?00:14
yofelcan't remember where that was exactly00:14

androidbrucei would like to have /boot, / and /home on separate partitions00:22
mark2010penguin42: Perfect...Thank You and all that have helped me!00:22
penguin42mark2010: No problem; can you report a bug for it please?00:22
mark2010how do i do this?00:22
ActionParsnipandroidbruce: if you want separate /boot partitions and such then yes00:23
androidbruceActionParsnip, use manual?00:23
mark2010it appears there is one already about white screens in 10.1000:23
penguin42mark2010: Run ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-ati   in a terminal and when it asks for details describe that you get a white screen but you don't if you add nomodeset00:23
ActionParsnipandroidbruce: i advise seperate / /home and swap but if you want a separate /boot partition, thats fine. Yes use manual.00:23
androidbruceok00:23
androidbruceim on the partition discs screen00:23
mark2010absolutely...let me reboot and make sure BRB00:24
androidbruceand right now it's SCSI3 (0,0,0) - 160GB ATA00:24

androidbrucehow do i specify more partitions00:25
androidbruceahh ok i got00:27
androidbruceit00:27
androidbrucei have a 160gb drive, what should i specify for each00:27
androidbruceany suggestions?00:28
mark2010penguin42: it worked the first time when i used ctrl+x to boot, but it didn't save the file. got white screen on reboot. and the nomodeset was not there. i guess i didn't save it.00:30
penguin42mark2010: Yeh to save it, hmm00:30
mark2010can i just edit the GRUB00:30
mark2010from inside ubuntu?00:31
penguin42mark2010: Edit /etc/default/grub and change GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX to add that and then run update-grub00:31
mark2010ok00:31
mark2010within the quotes i suppose00:33
penguin42yeh, show me the line when you're done00:33
mark2010GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset"00:34
penguin42yep00:34
mark2010i'll save00:34
mark2010i'll reboot again. thanks!00:35
mark2010penguin42: still white screen... should i put the text on the same line with quiet splash, maybe. i'm in now under the previous kernel fine00:43
penguin42mark2010: Hmm yes you can try it00:44
mark2010ok00:44
mark2010single space should be fine?00:46
mark2010now reads    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset"00:46

branthello everyone00:51
androidbrucehey guys when installing does it matter which spot on the disc my partitions are?00:52
androidbruceright now i have #1 /boot00:52
androidbruce#2 /00:52
androidbruce#3 /home00:52
androidbruce#4 free00:52
brantno, i don't think so00:52
penguin42androidbruce: Best to put /boot first, and earlier is faster in general00:52
androidbrucepenguin42, i see ok00:52
branti have a GNOME question...00:53
penguin42ask!00:53
brantIn the Task-tray (where the volume control is) there is an Email icon.00:54
brantIf I "Remove from Panel" of the Email thingy, it removes the Volume control too.00:54
penguin42brant: It's an Ubuntu-ism00:54
penguin42brant: The thing on the panel isn't actually 2 separate things, it's all part of the indicator-applet00:55
penguin42(although that then splits off to other processes)00:55
brantI noticed that the icons are part of the same applet, called Indicator Applet00:55
brantHow can I choose what goes onto the Indicator Applet?00:55
penguin42brant: I've not found a good answer to that00:56
brantI don't use the email icon, but I keep it there so the volume control doesn't go away.00:56
penguin42yeh me too00:56
mark2010thanks penguin42 for all your help. i gotta take a break for a while. thanks again to all.00:56
bjsnideri think the email icon is not for email00:56
brantActually, when I click the email icon, it shows nothing in the drop-down (because I removed the email software).00:57
penguin42brant: Yeh if you actually had email software and/or instant messaging it would glue into that00:57
bjsnidermost people use some sort of messaging, chatting, email ro whatnot software00:58
brantyeah, it had some options when I first installed Ubuntu... But the first thing I do after a fresh install is remove software that I'm not going to use.00:58
penguin42bjsnider: I have two machines here00:58
penguin42bjsnider: This one ----> doesn't have mail or messaging on; this one <----- does instant messaging/chat ; and mail I ssh onto a box with mutt00:58
bjsniderpenguin42, that's good to know. i'll add that to your confidential fbi file00:58
penguin42bjsnider: While the use of sshing to mutt maybe somewhat old school; having two machines doing different things isn't too unusual, so it's not too unusual to have a machine that isn't doing mail/messaging00:59
javatexan?01:02
ActionParsnippenguin42: it's not uncommon, also means you can ssh in from outside your LAN and check mail local. Ive always been after an X based app with a web interface but I havent found one as yet01:07

ubottuGRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager since Ubuntu 9.10.  For more information and troubleshooting for GRUB2 please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub202:14
androidbrucewell update-grub created a menu.lst02:14
androidbruceit couldn't find one before02:15
yofelerm, there should be no menu.lst02:15
yofelgrub2 uses a grub.cfg which is created by grub-mkconfig (called by update-grub)02:15
Volkodavwhen will the wallpaper and splash get activated in grub2 by the way ?02:15

androidbruceyofel, do i install grub onto my /boot partition?02:16
yofelor do you mean plymouth?02:16
Volkodavwell at least backround , as far splash either grub or plymout02:17
yofelandroidbruce: usually you would install grub2 into the MBR by using '/dev/sda' without number for example02:17
androidbruceyofel, yeah true, i specified my own /boot partition on install02:17
Volkodaveven backround does not work now02:18
yofelsplash is enabled, it takes quite a while to appear with the nvidia driver on my desktop, works fine on my notebook and my intel netbook02:18
yofelVolkodav: should work as long as you set the right one in the config files, create yourself a customised version of /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme02:19
Volkodavhmm can you show your /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme02:19
VolkodavI have one with backround and splash edited and it does not work02:20
Volkodavhttp://pastie.org/119609602:20
yofelVolkodav: I don't use a splash here, but you should be able to put a picture named moreblue-orbit-grub.png into /boot/grub/02:20
yofelVolkodav: so your picture is named Plasma-lamp.png  or Plasma-lamp.tga?02:21
Volkodavyes02:22
yofelhm, it should find it fine as long as the picture is in one of the searched folders02:22
Volkodavit is02:23
yofelthen I don't get why it doesn't work02:23
Volkodavneither do I02:24
yofelVolkodav: does 'update-grub' say that it found the image?02:24
Volkodavno02:25
yofelhm, if everything is ok then line 36 should print a message02:25
Volkodavprobably because I have grub in /boot on a separate partition ?02:26
yofelcould be, there is a 'is_path_readable_by_grub' check, put the image in /boot/grub/ and try again02:27

Arcerlapion: i usually use apt-get, and im in progress.  there's a few other broken packages that are preventing me from installing debsums but i seem to be getting through that04:46
lapionArcer,  it will reinstall all packages that failed to install their checksums04:46
Arcerthough i didnt realize apt used distcc (?!?)04:46
Arcerok, will that get all the packages that were suppose to be installed but were not as well?04:46
jdsbluedevlhi, can someone help me with my boot-screen freeze issue?04:47
lapionArcer, also a handy way of fixing packages is by using : dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/missing-package-name04:47
lapionjdsbluedevl, what kind of video chipset do you have ?04:48
lapionArcer, because usually the downloaded packages are still in the cache04:49
jdsbluedevllapion: that isn't the problem.  The boot-up since upgrading to the RC is freezing at the splash screen.  I need to get into verbose to see what's causing it, but I don't know how04:49
lapionarcer aptitude can reinstall packages..04:49
lapionjdsbluedevl, current splashscreen is part of kms, and kms has problems with several chipsets04:50
jdsbluedevllapion: NVIDIA GeForce 550004:51
jdsbluedevllapion: correction, it's NVIDIA GeForce FX 550004:52
Arcerlapion: ok, i think i got it.  the only thing left is ubuntuone-ppa-beta which im pretty sure is old04:52
jdsbluedevllapion: but how do you know it isn't an issue of the verbose hiding something that I can't see because of the splash screen?04:52
Arcerlapion: so thats the incompletely installed, what about the scripts run at the end of the upgrade process, ie, after it asks you to reboot in order to finish?04:53
lapionjdsbluedevl, intel has the most problems nvidia not as many, try booting in recovery mode, and then try running startx from commandline04:53
jdsbluedevllapion: what's the keystroke for recovery mode?  I tried F8 and F2, but they do nothing04:53
jdsbluedevlheck, I also tried Ctrl-Alt-F8 and Ctrl-Alt-F204:53
lapionjdsbluedevl, while turing on computer keep the shift key depressed and you will get grub-boot menu04:54
jdsbluedevllapion: nope, doesn't work04:55
lapionArcer, if you boot in recovery mode and select the dpkg option from the menu dpkg should do all configuring of all packages that got broken during install04:55
Arcerand thats it?04:56
lapionjdsbluedevl, depress the shift key from before turing on the system04:56
jdsbluedevllapion: huh?04:56
jdsbluedevllapion: you mean after the BIOS screen or before it?04:57
lapionarcer I would advice to use the aptitude trick i gave, because sometimes none of the packe managers see broken packages that have no checksums..04:57
lapionjdsbluedevl, doesn't matter depress the shift key and keep it pressed at the moment you turn on the system04:57
lapionjdsbluedevl, the shift key never block the system from booting only the grub bootloader detects it..04:58
jdsbluedevllapion: nope, still going straight to the splash screen and freezing04:59
jdsbluedevllapion: that being said, when I do a hard reset, I notice that the circles on the Kubuntu splash screen (which I have no idea how to get rid of in favor of the Ubuntu splash) light up sequentially05:01
lapionarcer also handy to do with debsums: sudo debsums -s05:03
lapionArcer, that one gives you a list of missing/damaged files with the package you need to reinstall to fix them05:04
hanasakihow do I get the gnome ethernet icon in the panel?  also the one that lets vpn's be configured?05:04
lapionjdsbluedevl, the shift key thingy should work, do not keep pressing the button repeatedly, but press it and keep it pressed until you get the grub boot-menus05:05
Muscovyhanasaki: Do you mean the button or the icon itself?05:05
jdsbluedevllapion: well THAT doesn't work either05:05
lapionjdsbluedevl, create a rc-boot-cd and bootup from it..05:06
hanasakiMuscovy:  both please05:06
lapionjdsbluedevl, are you using grub as boot-installer ?05:08
jdsbluedevllapion: I'm using whatever is stock05:08
Muscovyhanasaki: I'm not sure what part of your request is, but you can find the icon at /usr/share/icons/Humanity/status/24/network-transmit-receive.svg05:09
hanasakiMuscovy:  hmm that's not it.. I mean the icon on the panel so I can select it and setup a vpn client and see my ehternet adapters in gnome05:09
lapionjdsbluedevl, if you are using grub when keeping shift depressed while booting you should get grub boot-menu, in thet bootmenu you have to select one of the recovery-boot kernels05:09
Muscovyhanasaki: To set up VPN, select "VPN Connections", available by clicking on the network icon.05:10
lapionhanasaki, add the Notification Area to your panel05:11
lapionhanasaki, add the "Notification Area" to your panel05:11
hanasakilapion:  I have a notificaiton area.. just no icon like what Muscovy and you are talking about05:12
hanasakibrb05:12
lapionhanasaki, all the notification icons changed as of 10.x05:13
jdsbluedevllapion: I guess this will have to stay on hold for a while, apparently I have to download a new ISO (lost all the other older ones)05:13
hanasakithanks for the info on connections05:14
lapionjdsbluedevl, yes you need the latest one because with the older ones you cannot check if the latest release candidate will work with your system, at least with basic seetings05:15
hanasakiwhen I login metacity runs.. not compiz.  I ran compiz --replace and saved current apps / logged out and back in / again only metacity is running.  how can I get compiz to be the default on login?05:15
Arcerlapion: ok so basically what i just did is told dpkg to reinstall every package downloaded in the last two days in the cache (used a python script), the debsums -s shows a few bluetooth package bugs (which ill fix) but i dont have bluetooth on this system so it doesnt concern me highly05:16
Arcerwhat im concerned with is while im running a newer kernel, i dont seem to have newer bootup/etc graphics.  the widgets in the upper right look different, but are not other things suppose to change as well?05:17
pookyin 10.10, after an upgrade from 10.04, my windows don't drag properly. Any suggestions on how to debug/fix?05:17
lapionhanasaki, System->preferences->Appearance Preferences->Visual Effects05:17
pookySorry, I should be more specific, they refresh slowly and "lag". This is in gnome.05:18
Arcerpooky: you mean the title of the window seems hidden behind the top menu bar?05:18
pookyNo, when I drag a window on the screen, it ccan't keep up with the moue. This behavious ir new after the update.05:18
hanasakilapion:  I do that and it works.. logout / login and its back to metacity05:18
lapionArcer, rebuild your initramfs05:18
Arcerlapion: is there a command for that?05:19
pookywow, typing fail. Dragging a window on screen lags behind the mouse.05:19
pookyArcer: if I shade the window, and turn it just into a titlebar, it works fine.05:20
lapionArcer, sudo update-initramfs -k all -c05:20
hanasakilapion:  any idea why the selection won't "stick" between logins?05:21
lapionhanasaki, try google05:21
lapionhanasaki, or post your problem at another tiem and hope there is someone in her that happens to have had the same problem05:22
lapion*here05:22
rohitWhile choosing a wallpaper, the slideshow wallpapers, on clicking the forward/play button -- another similar button appears before it. On clicking it it disappears. This is a bug?05:22

jdsbluedevlhi, I'm having issues with the RC.  When I boot up, the computer hangs on the splash screen.  I booted instead into the Live CD.  What do I do now?06:10

jdsbluedevlare you telling me hanging at the boot splash screen is an unfixable bug?06:12

RBeckerHey guys, about 2 weeks ago I updated from 10.04.1 to 10.10 and I've had no GUI since.  I've heard that there was a driver incompatability between the nvidia driver and the x server version shipped with 10.10.  I've tried everything people have suggested, nouveau, version 256, 260, etc.  Any ideas?16:08
penguin42RBecker: it should work on the upto date ones at the moment, I'd use jockey to remove and readd the driver16:09
RBeckerpenguin42: could you give me directions?16:10
RBeckerI can still ssh to the machine16:10
penguin42RBecker: Well, I don't use any closed drivers but possibly; can you type jockey-text -l and tell me what it says?16:10
RBeckeris that an L or an I16:11
penguin42l for list16:11
RBeckerok16:11
RBeckerkmod:nvidia_96 - nvidia_96 (Proprietary, Disabled, Not in use)16:12

bjsniderRBecker, what graphics chip have you got?16:16

RBeckerI can't honestly tell you that16:16
RBeckerIt's an onboard nvidia card16:16
RBeckerlemme find out what it is16:16
RBeckerhang on16:16
bjsniderit's an important piece of information16:17
penguin42RBecker: lspci | grep -i vga will tell you16:17

RBeckerIt's onboard16:19
RBeckerI just bought a new one, I was thinking my dad's computer might need it but now it doesn't look that way16:19
RBeckerand jockey-text -u came up with nothing16:20

penguin42bjsnider: If it does why doesn't -l list it?16:24
RBeckerbjsnider: I DO have a newer card16:25
bjsniderwell toss it in there and use that16:25
RBeckerbut lemme try changing around some packages16:25
bjsniderpenguin42, all things being equal, but who's to say what he's got screwed up in there16:25
bjsnidermaybe jockey isn't proerly installed, or the whole system isn't properly installed16:26
RBeckerbjsnider: I'm right here you know16:26
penguin42bjsnider: Or it's a jockey bug16:26
bjsniderprobably not16:26
bjsniderjockey compares the pciid against what it finds from a script run against the kernel module16:26
bjsniderso the available drivers are the ones that match based on the results of that comparison16:27
penguin42bjsnider: So what does the -u do? Does that fetch a new list from somewhere or is it based on what modules happen to be installed?16:27
bjsniderbut that graphics chip is hardly worth the bother. a $50 expansion card would be better by about...a billion times16:28
bjsniderpenguin42, i'm not familiar with all the switches16:29
bjsniderit's telling him only the -96 driver is a match?16:29
penguin42me neither16:29
penguin42bjsnider: Apparently so16:29
bjsniderthen it just isn't worth bothering with16:29
penguin42bjsnider: Indeed, but if that's the same backend as the GUI one and it's doing that it's going to screw a lot of people up16:30
RBeckerok, It's installed, so should I reboot and see if it works?16:30
bjsniderthere's no proof the -96 driver will be updated by the time maverick is released16:30
bjsniderwhat's installed?16:30
RBeckernvidia-current16:31
bjsniderhow did you install it?16:31
RBeckeraptitude16:31
penguin42RBecker: But you've only just installed current - right?16:31
bjsniderwell, you'll have to make sure xorg.conf has the nividia driver in it16:31

RBeckerbjsnider: new card didn't fix it17:02
RBeckerI can't disable my onboard in my BIOS, I can only set the primary adapter17:02
RBeckeris there a way in ubuntu to disable the old one?17:02
sda1986penguin42: So I have an ATI mobility x1700, Ati drop driver support to this card so I don't have a good power managment, I read on Phoronix website, the kernel 2.6.35 solve this problem, now i have this kernel but i have no idea how check if is it working, no idea how check what frequency is now using, and how change it! I need help for that.17:04
SeRVeR01hey all17:04
penguin42sda1986: Hmm I haven't looked at checking on the power saving17:05
SeRVeR01I need to run some .Net apps i installed wine but it tells me wine: Install the Windows version of Mono to run .NET executables17:05
SeRVeR01i googled for it there is apkg called mono17:06
SeRVeR01but how to install it ?17:06

penguin42SeRVeR01: Try installing the mono-runtime package17:07
SeRVeR01is already the newest version17:07
penguin42sda1986: /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/radeon_pm_info is showing frequency and voltage and PCI lanes for my HD435017:08

sda1986penguin42: yes mine too, and it show the maximum freq17:08
penguin42SeRVeR01: Sorry, I don't actually know much about mono, so I'm not really sure where to go next, if that's installed can you just try running your program?17:08

penguin42sda1986: So that suggests something like echo dynpm   to the ssys file should set it - or profile17:09
Ejdesgaard_Hi, i have upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10, and there are one issue, i have no menu for shutdown / restart / hibernate etc. in top right corner.... this is realy anoying. and i hope that you guys can tell me how to get it back on the panel17:09
bjsniderRBecker, try starting from scratch. uninstall nvidia-current and remove the xorg.conf file. in that case, the nouveau driver should be used and you can activate nvidia-current after rebooting17:09
RBeckerone sec17:09
RBeckerI ran nvidia-xconfig but it had my old card as the name17:10
penguin42Ejdesgaard_: Do an add to panel and make sure you have inidicator-applet-session added17:10
RBeckerso I changed it to the new one17:10
RBeckerand am now rebooting17:10
RBeckerok, that didn't work, lemme try what you said17:10
sda1986penguin42: I'm reading the page, i'll be back soon, but already thanks :)17:10
penguin42sda1986: Hey no problem; note the warning at the bottom that the power saving on kms is a work in progress!17:11
sda1986penguin42: better than have the frequency always to 460!17:11
SeRVeR01there is a voip app for msn or not yet ^^ ?17:11
penguin42sda1986: I'm running on a desktop anyway with a fanless card so it doesn't really matter to me17:11
Ejdesgaard_penguin42, nice, but how do i get it to the far right?17:11
penguin42Ejdesgaard_: Try right clicking and using move?17:12
sda1986penguin42: on my laptop matter a lot, battery life and noise17:12
penguin42sda1986: Yeh17:12
Ejdesgaard_penguin42, thank's it worked... i just had to unmark "lock to panel" :)17:13
RBeckerbjsnider: I uninstalled nvidia-current, removed xorg.conf, and now I get a black screen with a flashing cursor in the corner17:14
RBeckerI can drop to a console17:15

sda1986hi all, i have a weird problem, I have an Asus F3jp, it has 2 jack 3.5" plug, one is for the mic the other for headphones (and maybe spif or something like that) with ubuntu 10.10 and 10.04, a red led inside this second plug stay on all time. why? how i can turn it off? thanks!20:26
IdleOnedonri: the update manager will disable them and you will need to manually update them afterwards for maverick20:26
trismdonri: you'll want to disable your ppas before upgrade, then update them to maverick afterwards (assuming they provide maverick packages)20:26
donriGetting some mixed messages here :)20:26
trismdonri: we both said the same thing20:27
IdleOnedonri: you can either disable them before hand or the update manager will20:27
donriRoger. Thanks.20:27
IdleOneeither way. they won't be used20:27
IdleOne:)20:27
IdleOneWelcome20:27
donriHow big is the risk that updating breaks my somewhat tinkered-with system?20:27
IdleOnethis big20:28
donri?20:28
Ken8521donri, well, it's there.. it's happened a few times that i've saw.. but...20:28
IdleOnedonri: there is always a risk20:28
Ken8521exactly20:28
IdleOnemake sure you have backups20:28
trismdonri: I never have problems with upgrades that I can't fix, but you should always backup before hand, so you can clean install if needed20:28
Ken8521if we said the risk was zero, you'd be crazy to do it w/o a backup20:28
donri(:20:28
nemook. this is driving me bonkers20:29
nemoI installed google chrome for browser testing.20:29
nemoI have no interest in using it most of the time20:29
Ken8521and you realized how awesome it is?20:29
nemobut, ever since I installed it...20:29
nemoKen8521: lul20:29
nemoso wrong20:29
nemoanyway20:29
nemoI can't get the damn thing to not be default for various things20:29
nemoI've already run the update-alternatives20:30
IdleOneuninstall it20:30
donriDid you configure Preferred Applications?20:30
nemoIdleOne: might have to.20:30
Ken8521nemo, what does it sa in preferred applications?20:30
Ken8521nemo, what do you not like about chrome?  it is slick.20:30
Ken8521and runs so much better than Firefox20:30
IdleOnealso, use chromium-broswer instead20:30
nemoKen8521: let me count the ways20:30
donriChromium 6+ with Ubuntu themes is OK20:31
nemoKen8521: crippled addons (no deep integration, just cheapass stuff equiv to jetpack or greasemonkey)20:31
nemoKen8521: no graphics acceleration20:31
Ken8521nemo, i dunno, it's working great for me... adblock and flash is all i need.. and they work fantastic20:31
* donri so wishes Epiphany was more usable20:31
nemoKen8521: tough to customise, due to lack of CSS/XUL customisation which is trivial even w/ userChrome.css or addons20:31
Ken8521nemo, did you install chromium, or did you download chrome from google's website?20:31
nemoKen8521: I have both installed20:32
Ken8521oh.20:32
donriWhich version(s)?20:32
nemoKen8521: anyway. I prefer Firefox 420:32
nemodonri: chromium 6, google chrome 720:32
Ken8521FF 4 doesn't have a linux version yet does it?20:32
nemoKen8521: sure it does20:32
nemoKen8521: both 32 bit and 64 bit20:32
Ken8521guess it just hasn't hit the repos yet20:32
donriIt does though not as polished as for Windows20:32
nemoKen8521: you'd have to use a PPA20:32
Ken8521oh, i'm not that worried about it... chrome is working awesome for me.20:33
owen1is Netbook Edition faster than xubuntu? where can i see list of packages?20:33
nemodonri: only difference that I've seen from firefox for windows is lack of the combined menu - which is I guess a concern about properly integrating with all windows managers20:33
donriI wish Fx would work with globalmenu20:33
nemoKen8521: meh. as noted, crappy addons, limited customisation, no graphics accel, and stagnated JS engine20:33
nemoKen8521: but. to each his own20:33
nemoaaanyway20:33
donriBut I use an addon to just hide the menubar instead20:33
nemoKen8521: did not want this to be a freaking discussion of chromium fail20:34
Ken8521brb guys20:34
nemowas trying to find solution to problem20:34
nemodonri: so. yeah. is set to firefox in preferred apps...20:34
nemodonri: also did the check for default in firefox20:34
donriAre we talking http:// or file://*.html?20:34
nemoand searched for "hrom"20:34
nemodonri: well, last place chromium got triggered was when I was trying to view help file for geeqie20:35
donriChanging the preferred browser only affects remote links methinks20:35
nemoto see why I couldn't find the "shuffle" option20:35
donriFor locally browsing HTML files and the like you can set it in the preferences for the file in nautilus20:35
nemoI right clicked on a file20:35
nemoand firefox was set as default for html20:35
donriAlso: ubuntu-tweak lets you tweak defaults app in a more central and complete manner20:36
nemohm20:36
* nemo tries that20:36
nemono such package or app20:36
nemodonri: where do you find it?20:36
nemobtw. another irritating thing about update-alternatives - it encourages a kind of "Race to the bottom" amongst similar apps20:37
nemofor example, chromium opened (and "fixed") a bug to increase its weight to be higher than other browsers20:37
nemoI found that when trying to figure out why it kept opening...20:38
guntbertdonri: nemo: ubuntu-tweak does nothing you cannot do from regular ubuntu if I remember correctly20:38
donrippa:tualatrix/ppa20:38
nemo(not that it was due to weight - edited that manually and anyway had already overridden in custom)20:38
nemoguntbert: well. clearly there is an option I'm missing20:38
donriguntbert: True, but makes some tasks easier20:38
nemoguntbert: apparently there are a huge number of ways to decide what to use to open some HTML :(20:38
donrinemo:  ppa:tualatrix/ppa  was for you BTW20:38
nemoyep20:38
nemoadding it now20:38
nemoluckily I'm at home20:39
nemoadding ppa doesn't work at work due to their using a high-level port for the http connection20:39
donriYou can always browse and download .deb off launchpad manually20:39
guntbertnemo: donri be careful though, I saw reports of *very* strange(possibly dangerous) scripts/commands in there20:39
nemouhoh20:40
nemoguntbert: as in. malicious or just careless?20:40
guntbertnemo: rather the latter (every package operation with --force,....)20:40
guntbertbut as I said -- only reports, I didn't look into it myself20:41
nemomm. I've had to use force many a time myself :)20:41
nemoI can see a gui resorting to it to avoid mysterious errors20:41
guntbertnemo: its ok if you do it yourself for your own system - but a script?20:42
owen1where can i find list of packages for netbook edition? i would like to see if it's lighter than xubuntu.20:43
dmattnemo: you can try reinstall the browser you prefer as default, may be it is also default-hungry :)20:45
donriowen1: apt-cache depends ubuntu-netbook, maybe20:45
owen1donri: thanks!20:45
nemodmatt: hm. worth a shot I guess...20:46
donriowen1: Maybe add --recurse to that20:46
nemodmatt: but. this game could go on for a while20:46
nemodmatt: since I do update browsers20:46
nemo(when the repo prompts)20:46
nemoI'd rather a saner solution :)20:46
donriowen1: It's not a very effective way to compare "lightness" though20:46
nemoof course having to dig through multiple configs and symlinks isn't that sane :-/20:46
owen1donri: any other suggestions? i want ubuntu, but as fast as i can (alternate CD is an option but prefer xubuntu-lubuntu-netbook)20:48
donriDon't think alternate CD makes any difference?20:48
nemodonri: oh. btw. you mentioned you were using an addon to enable the combined menu for linux too?20:48
nemodonri: does it move it into the gtk chrome?20:48
donrinemo: No, I'm using globalmenu, a gnome-panel applet20:48
nemo'cause it'd be nice to free up that vertical space on this screen - I already rearranged the other various bits onto a single line20:48
nemoah20:49
owen1donri: the iso is more than 600mb, so at least in terms of size it's the same as xubuntu20:49
dmattowen1: if you want it fast, instal from usb20:49
donriOh it's the download size that bothers you20:50
Ken8521yeah, thats true.20:50
owen1dmatt: my desktop never let me do that from usb.20:50
Ken8521well, then cd it is20:50
owen1donri: dmatt and i like an ubuntu with minimum apps installed.20:50
Ken8521my desktop won't boot USB either20:50
nemodonri: I checked AMO, looks like there are a few addons20:50
donriowen1: Can always uninstall stuff...20:51
owen1i use text-based apps whenever i can20:51
dmattowen1: how is your desktop preventing you from using ubs?20:51
dmattusb20:51
nemodonri: guess I'll give one of those a shot once I figure things out w/ this default20:51
* nemo highfives owen1 20:51
owen1dmatt: it never recognize the ubuntu install20:51
nemotext-based sessions FTW!20:51
Ken8521donri, yup... i like GUI apps, but everything i install, i regularly use... anything i don't use, gets removed20:51
nemossh -20:51
nemoer20:51
donritext-apps suck, curses is a hack.20:51
nemossh -C + screen + irssi + centerim + alpine + w3m personally20:51
nemolightweight secure sessions from anywhere I happen to be20:52
owen1i use chrome for browsing20:52
dmattowen1: did you managed to boot from usb any other system?20:52
owen1and finch for im20:52
donriCLI apps are good for combinatory commanding though20:52
nemoah. finch drives me mad20:52
nemoowen1: tried finch for a week. was just too irritating20:52
owen1dmatt: yes. my laptop is fine with usb20:52
nemowas like someone directly ported a window app to the console20:52
nemostuck w/ centerim20:52
donriweechat? :P20:52
nemoI hope cim5 makes some progress20:52
nemodonri: never heard of it.20:53
donriIt's irssiesque and I think has at least support for jabber20:53
nemodonri: mm.20:53
dmattowen1: I meant desktop booting from usb20:53
donriAnd better window handling than irssi (splits etc)20:53
nemodonri: I'm on a lot more protocols than that :)20:53
donriThere's always bitlbee20:54
donribut that sucks.20:54
owen1i also use awesomeWM20:54
owen1so never actually use lxde/xfce (lubuntu/xubuntu)20:54
donriowen1: Maybe you're more of a debian guy?20:55
owen1but i do like stuff that xfce gives me like UI for screen resolution/keyboard setting etc20:55
Ken8521plus, ubuntu has better hardware recognition than debian20:55
owen1donri: not sure20:55
owen1yeah20:55
owen1+1 for hardware20:56
dmattowen1: just install ubuntu server + few packages you use :)20:56
nemodonri: I really like the centerim interface - would just like it to use the more frequently updated libpurpl20:56
Ken8521now thats an idea.20:56
donriAnd PPAs are superior to debian backports / mere .deb files20:56
owen1text-based ubuntu distro!20:56
owen1consolbuntu20:57
donriowen1: There's always crunchbang?20:57
owen1donri: i think they switched to debian20:57
owen1and they are not text-based20:57
donriTheir website says otherwise20:57
donriWell, it's probably lighter out of the box20:57
=== shazzr_ is now known as shazzr

duffydackits called server.20:59
donriYea20:59
donriHow much servery stuff is installed by default though?20:59
owen1hmm20:59
duffydacknothing20:59
trismdonri: you get to choose in the installer21:00
duffydackthere is also the minimal intall21:00
duffydackinstall*21:00
donriAnd it still has all the hardware detection?21:00
duffydackcourse21:02
duffydackits just ubuntu without fancy gui.21:03
duffydackthe 'guts' are still there21:03
owen1duffydack: so can i use the console to detect the hardware?21:03
donriI thought maybe it was optimized for different environments/architectures etc21:03
donriLike, why detect graphical chipsets for a server...21:04
duffydackwhat do you mean 'detect'21:04
donriowen1: lspci? :P21:04
duffydacklshw, lspci, lsusb21:04
donriI think the point is that Ubuntu does it for you during boot21:04
owen1donri: there is a UI in xubuntu/ubuntu that find restricter drivers.21:04
donriCould probably install that if it's not there21:05
duffydackthen you'd just install the packages it installs.21:05
donriYea if you know what drivers you need I think it should just work to install them?21:06
duffydackthe only thing I have thats not desktop related is bcmwl-kernel-source (the sta driver for broadcom)21:06
duffydackI guess if you didnt know before hand then you could just use a livecd to find out21:07
donriowen1: jockey-text21:07
duffydackcurses based jockey exists? cool21:08
donriin the jockey-common package21:08
owen1donri: nice!21:09
donriduffydack: command based not curses21:09
duffydackeither is cool21:10
nemodonri: screwit.21:10
donri?21:10
nemodonri: nothing in ubuntu-tweak revealed itself21:10
donriOh21:11
nemoI'm sick of fighting w/ that browser21:11
nemoI just uninstalled it21:11
nemoif I need to test it, I'll do a manual install to a directory21:11
donriYou can test webkit with epiphany or midori21:11
donriThough chrome is not "pure" webkit21:11
nemono kidding21:11
nemodonri: I run into way more rendering bugs in chrome than safari/webkit21:11
nemoalso javascript21:11
nemodonri: premature optimisations mostly21:11
nemoalthough they seemed to have their own special set of issues w/ shadows21:12
nemodonri: I'll just download a zip to the desktop. probably should have done that in the first place21:12
nemodonri: ubuntu-tweak is neat though. I'll play around w/ it more in future21:12
donriIt's not perfect but gets certain jobs done easily21:13

donriHah, yea.21:14
duffydacknot a lot different to droid...not sure yet which I think is better21:14

donriDroid mono bugs in gedit too21:15
duffydackI use it, not noticed any 'bug'21:15

wolterwhat exactly does "install alongside other operating systems" option in the installer does?21:17
wolterdo*21:17
shazzrwolter: multiboot with current OS.21:17
wolteryeah but partition-wise21:17
duffydackI dont trust it.. I do it manually21:17
donriduffydack: I shamefully use Consolas for monospace :(21:18
wolterthe thing is I have a netbook with 160/160 gb space occupied by ntfs windows partition21:18
wolterand I want to install ubuntu, but I don't want to mess anything up21:18
wolterrecommendations?21:18
penguin42wolter: Take a backup first, whatever happens next21:18
donriwolter: Wubi?21:18
wolterwubi installs everything on to the ntfs?21:18
donriYep21:19
donriAs a windows program21:19
wolterwell, then wubi is the way to go :S21:19
Ken8521wubi is a bad idea, IMO.21:19
wolterdoes it run as well?21:19
penguin42I think tehre is an option to resize the ntfs down21:19
wolteryeah Ken8521 imo too, but I think I have no other options21:19
wolteroptionp21:19
Ken8521wolter, of course you do, partition your hard drive21:19
penguin42wolter: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot covers resizing NTFS partitions21:19
donriI've had Wubibuntu stop booting after installing [kernel, I think] updates, in 9.1021:20
wolterKen8521, yeah I would be taking the risk of ruining the existing ntfs partition, wouldn't I ?21:20
penguin42wolter: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowtoResizeWindowsPartitions21:20
Ken8521wolter, it can happen, yes.21:20
penguin42wolter: But be careful! (Oh and have a backup as well for when it wasn't)21:20
Ken8521wolter, do you not have a backup?21:20
Ken8521because honestly, if you don't have a backup, i wouldn't use wubi either21:21
wolterNo, but in any case, would a backup save the windows installation?21:21
wolterKen8521, why not?21:21
Ken8521wolter, no, it wouldn't save it.. but you could run a system restore, and restore your important stuff21:21
wolterif wubi is installed to the same hdd21:21
penguin42wolter: No, but it would save your data!  (There are some backups that can same the windows installation)21:21
wolterI have no data I want to save, except for the windows installation itself21:21
wolterSee, the windows install is incredibly recent21:22
wolterand nobody has used the computer21:22
nemodonri: http://m8y.org/tmp/Screenshot.png - saving screen real-estate on the laptop21:22
Ken8521wolter, then what are you worried about?.. if something gets boned up, just do a system restore21:22
nemodonri: I know you mentioned combined menu, but I like the applications/places/system menu - I just want it to be shorter21:22
wolterKen8521, its a netbook without a cd drive, and I don't have the tools to reinstall windows if anything went wrong, I would have to hire the IT guy21:22
Ken8521wolter, most likely, you have a restore partition21:23
anon33_hello - i'd like to remove some ppa's that are getting 404 errors but i don't know how. one such error is: "http://pastie.org/119713421:23

wolterNo, there is only one partition21:23
anon33_could anyone help me out? going into the package manager and searching for "dockbar" doesn't result in anything21:23
Ken8521wolter, do you have a windows disk or restore disk?21:23
Ken8521that came w/ the netbook21:24
wolteri am certain i have a windows 7 cd, but the netbook has xp21:24
wolteri would have to look for the windows xp cd21:24
wolterbut anyway, I don't have the external CD rom21:24
Ken8521wolter, well, i can't help you there.21:24
wolternow, what are the contras of using wubi?21:25
penguin42wolter: My gut feeling is to say that if the Windows is important to you and you couldn't fix it if it were to break, then it's probably best to avoid doing an Ubuntu install - you could try Wubi and I think it's less likely to break anything21:25
Ken8521wolter, same risks as a regular ubuntu install really.. if something goes wrong, it goes really wrong.. and you'll be reinstalling either way21:25
trismanon33_: System/Administration/Software Sources, uncheck the PPA, and reload the repository info (software sources will do it automatically when you close it after making changes)21:25
wolterKen8521, but I don't need to resize partitions with wubi, do i?21:26
trismanon33_: it seems to be hidden by default in maverick, you may need to enable the menu option by right clicking and editing the menu first21:26
penguin42Ken8521: Is that actually true?21:26
Ken8521actually, using wubi,l it's less likely you'll recover, as opposed to using a traditional install21:26
wolterI understand I don't21:26
Ken8521penguin42, thats been my experience21:26
penguin42Ken8521: Ouch; I'd assumed Wubi was reasonably safe21:26
Ken8521no, you wouldn't have to recreate a partition, you would hav a "virtual partition" on yoru netbook.21:26
Ken8521wolter, i can't stress this enough, i would not use wubi in this situation.21:26
Ken8521honestly, if you cannot do a "normal" install, i would put off installing Ubuntu, until you can get some sort of external CD source(buy, borrow, steal, etc.)21:27
Ken8521seriously... i've saw wubi cause some train wrecks21:27
donrinemo: Seen Mr Nobody? :)21:27

duffydackisnt booting win7 from usb just a matter of making fat32 partition and copying files to it.?  I read on technet it was...21:28
Ken8521wolter, do you have a friend that could loan you an external CD, if it came down to it?21:28

nemodonri: ok. of it :)21:28
wolterI will trust the wubiguide :S21:28
donrinemo: ?21:28
Ken8521wolter, i think thats a really bad idea.. like i said, if you're gonna take a risk take a risk installing it right..21:29
Ken8521wolter, problem is, if youc an't boot windows because something goes werong, you can't fix the problem21:29
wolterKen8521, yeah but that risk is greater21:29
Ken8521wolter, no its not.21:29
Ken8521trust me21:29
wolterKen8521, what worries me is the resizing of partitions21:29
wolterI trust well the installation process21:29
Ken8521wolter, resizing the partition is not hard... you have no data on the drive, so the chance of something going wrong, is very very slim.21:30
wolterKen8521, you think? Well, I will defrag first21:30
nemodonri: ... never heard (of it)21:30
Ken8521but.. if something happens to a wubi install, you'll be reinstalling windows... which you apparently cannot do, because you don't have an external CD21:30
Ken8521wolter, why would youd efrag, you said it's a new laptop w/ nothing on it21:30
Ken8521you're making a mountain out of a mole hill21:30

Ken8521becaue thats just ignorant21:32
wolterwhat?21:32
Ken8521defragging doesn't clean anything..21:32
Ken8521it organizes scattered data, if you have nothing on the laptop, there's nothing to organize21:32

Ken8521some people just aren't meant for linux21:33
wolterlol, i use ubuntu21:33
Ken8521then what is the problem?21:33
Ken8521you use ubuntu, and you're scared to partition a drive?21:33
wolterits just that i need to install this on the netbook, and I don't want to ruin it because then theyll blame it on me, reasonably21:33
Ken8521wolter, and if you install wubi, and it causes a trainwreck, who will they blame?21:34
Ken8521your risk is just as high w/ Wubi, as it is w/ a normal install..21:34
Ken8521anytime Windows is involved in the equation, there's a risk.. at least w/ a normal install, Windos is removed.21:34

penguin42mark2010: Hey no problem - did you file a bug on it?21:35
mark2010yes, with the solution.21:35

wolterjust let me defrag ok?21:36
wolterapplications have been installed and stuff21:36
wolterI just dont think it has received to many use21:37
wolterin fact, if I analyze the drive and its not defragmentated, then i will not defrag, obviously, but you're just suggesting to do things wrecklessly21:37
wolterjust so you know, the drive was in fact a bit defragmented21:37
Ken8521wolter, i'm suggesting doing this wrecklessly?... lmao21:37
wolteryes, without sufficient care21:37
Ken8521pal, i've probably been installing linux since you were born21:37
wolterprobably21:37
donriWait, you will not defrag if it's not defragmented?21:37
wolterno21:37
Ken8521i've never defragged a drive, ever21:37
wolterfragmented21:38

Ken8521:)21:38
swexHave anybody cached bug in 10.10: elements of program iface staying on top of X till logoff or reload window manager?21:38
Ken8521wolter, well, if you're gonna do something as reckless as use Wubi.. don't use a release that isn't final.. use 10.0421:39
duffydackwubi is the last thing to make work isnt it.21:39
wolterKen8521, i will not use wubi, I will resize the partition once it is defragmented21:39

wolterthen you don't need it21:40

Ken8521i vnc'd a guy box in austrailia last night, and installed ubuntu for him, including partitioning his drive.. and he's fine... i feel pretty confident i know what i'm talking about21:41
donriYou're making me crave nicotine with all this talk of alcohol. BRB smoke.21:41
Ken8521lol21:41
wolterI have partitioned drives before21:41
wolterfor ubuntu21:41
wolterits not like you're impressing me21:41
Jordan_Uwolter: There's no need to defrag before rezising.21:41
bullgard4_Applications > System Tools > System Profiler and Benchmark > (System Information) > Computer >Environment Variables lists only 36 environment variables. '~$ env' lists 42. The missing are EDITOR, GIO_LAUNCH, HISTCONTROL, HISTSIZE, LESSCLOSE, LESSOPEN, MM_CHARSET,  TERM. Too much are GIO_LAUNCHED_DESKTOP_FILE_PID and GIO_LAUNCHED_DESKTOP_FILE. How to explain the difference?21:41
ikoniaguys - check the topic of this channel21:41
ikoniabullgard4_: on 10.10 ?21:42
donriUpdating to Maverick needs to download 1G packages. This will take 7 minutes with your connection. \o/21:42
bullgard4_ikonia: Yes.21:42
wolterJordan_U, well defrag is almost done anyway, but thanks :)21:42
ikoniabullgard4_: TERM won't be shown as it's not set with a gui application, HIST variables won't as they are shell varibles and not used in a gui, EDITOR the same, not sure about GIO ones21:43
wolternon given ;)21:43
penguin42bullgard4_: If you start a terminal does TERM get set?21:44
wolterKen8521, you said it wasn't necessary to defrag because the estimated use of the drive was scarce, you didn't say it wasn't necessary in general21:44
Ken8521wolter, i'm not gonna argue w/ you... as it's pointless because you're clueless21:44
Ken8521that's not what i said21:44
ikoniawolter: the linux file systems to not require defragging21:45
frankhi21:45
Ken8521ikonia, he's talking abou windows21:45
wolterikonia, its an ntfs partition, not a linux filesystem21:45
woltera*21:45
ikoniawhy are we talking about windows in here then ?21:45
frankno frglx and vmware support yet :) :( but it's rc so ok for me21:45
wolterKen8521, ok, you don't need to argue with me anyway21:45
penguin42ikonia: He was looking at doing an installation on a machine with a full disk21:45
Jordan_Uikonia: Because resizing windows is a common part of installing Ubuntu.21:45
penguin42frank: People have had frglx working I think21:45
penguin42frank: Which card do you have?21:46
frankati mobility radeon 3....whatever hd21:46
woltershould I resize partition with windows or gparted?21:46
bullgard4_penguin42: I started a GNOME terminal. In it: "~$env | grep TERM; TERM=xterm; COLORTERM=gnome-terminal".21:46
frankwolter: worked absolutely fine for me with the builtin gparted from the installer21:46
penguin42frank: I think frglx should work, but the open drivers are pretty good now on some hardware - I'm running the HD4350 with open drivers and running desktop effects21:46
ikoniabullgard4_: those won't be set with gui applications, hence why you don't see them21:47
penguin42bullgard4_: Yeh, so I think they are set in a .bashrc or .bashprofile and thus only once you start a shell21:47
bullgard4_ikonia: Yes, I understood your reasoning.21:47
ikoniasuper21:47
frankpenguin42: exactly, it was undistinguishably smooth with the open drivers, but i need vmware workstation in order to work with the laptop21:47
frankso it's reinstallation time for 10.4 :D \o/21:47
penguin42frank: OK, so this is running VMWare workstation to run something as a gust?21:48
frankpenguin42: exactly21:48
penguin42frank: Have you tried virtualbox?21:48
frankpenguin42: yes, never again21:48
penguin42frank: I'm told it's pretty good these days; I run KVM which isn't too bad but is still a work in progress21:48
* penguin42 has about 5 different guests on her (Two Ubuntu servers, Fedora 14, and for obscurity Arch/Hurd)21:49
bullgard4_penguin42: I set TERM=xterm by hand in .bashrc . Otherwise my terminals GNOME-terminal, Guake and Tilda would not work properly.21:49
penguin42bullgard4_: Gnome-terminal should set it ok; I've seen a bug for guake and something else not setting the terminal type21:50
frankpenguin42: this might all be correct but I'm getting VMs from customers in the vmware format (not OVF, vmdk and vmx files...) AND It's a pain in the ass to backup and restore virtualbox VMs since there is no way to export or import VMs. So all you can do is to copy the virtual disks and lose all (e.g. tcpip settings from your windows guests)21:50
penguin42frank: Ah I understand21:50
Jordan_UI've just done a sandbox upgrade to to Ubuntu 10.10 (sudo do-release-upgrade -sd) and got many errors during the upgrade, /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt-term.log here: http://jordanu.dyndns.org/tmp/apt-term.log . How can I prevent this from happening when I really commit to installing?21:51
penguin42Jordan_U: Won't let me look at that21:51
frankbtw does anyone of you know if i can use the full 4gb physical memory of my laptop when installing 32bit? Is there some fancy extended memory mapping going on?21:51
Jordan_Upenguin42: Will now :)21:51
frankflash and 64 bit aren't friends yet21:52
Jordan_U!pae | frank21:52
ubottufrank: To use more than ~3.2GB RAM on a 32bit system you can install the PAE-enabled kernel. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnablingPAE for more info21:52
bullgard4_penguin42: I filed a Launchpad error report for Guake and Tilda. But I remember that GNOME-terminal sometimes also complained about a missing TERM variable.21:52
penguin42Jordan_U: That looks great to me21:52
TDJACRbullgard4_: Could be a language error.21:52
TDJACRLocale*21:52
penguin42frank: There is a 64bit flash now, not tried it; although I find the nspluginwrapper+32 is OK these days21:52
frankubottu: great, thanks: Both the CD and DVD installer of Ubuntu 10.04 automatically installs the PAE enabled kernel if it detects more than 3 Gb of available memory. In the case of the liveCD, a working network connection is required, since the PAE enabled kernel packages are not present on the CD.21:53
ubottuError: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :)21:53

wolterok, so I'm about to resize the ntfs partition21:53
wolterrisk is minimal, right?21:53
TDJACRNice frank  :P21:53
wolterit has a usage of 8/160 gb21:53
Jordan_Ufrank: Personally I don't think it's worth using 32 bit just for flash. And you can always run 32 bit firefox in 64 bit Ubuntu.21:53
bullgard4_TDJACR: Ah! Can you elaborate? With me: LANG=en_US.utf8; LANGUAGE=de_DE:de.21:54
Ken8521Jordan_U, your log is still loading, how long is this thing?21:54
TDJACRfrank: I agree with Jordan_U, it works fine on 64 bit for me.21:54
Jordan_Uwolter: Yes, the risk is mininal (but existant).21:54
frankJordan_U: i see no reason for using 64bit. Can you think of one? Besides "having 32 bit more" :)21:54
penguin42frank: PAE is a bit of a mess, I don't actually trust it21:54
TDJACRbullgard4_: I don't really know, but I've had a similar error before. You need to regenerate locales. (If that is an issue)21:55
Jordan_UKen8521: 1.3 Meg :)21:55
Ken8521lol21:55
TDJACRbbl21:55
bullgard4_TDJACR: What do you mean by "to regenerate locales"?21:55
penguin42Jordan_U: How much of it is all moaning about loaders.cache?21:56
scientes starting any qt application immediately crashes X21:56
scientesi am using nvidia21:56
scienteswhen i first installed it wasn't like that21:56
Ken8521penguin42, it seems.. most of it..lol21:56
scienteswhat do i do?21:57
Ken8521woohoo, jordan's log is doneloading21:57
wolterso, am I recommended to use ext4 or ext3?21:58
ikoniawolter: ext4 is current21:59
ikoniawolter: any reason you're trying to use a development version when you don't seem a confident Linux user in general ?21:59
wolterikonia, i'm a confident linux user, I just don't like partitioning21:59
wolterand I want to install it because we're days away from the final release22:00
ikoniawolter: then why are you asking about file systems22:00
Jordan_Upenguin42: Ken8521: Here's the log compressed with xz : http://jordanu.dyndns.org/tmp/apt-term.log.xz22:00
ikoniait won't be the first time a release has been scrapped days before release22:00
penguin42Jordan_U: Well, the first error is dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/libdvdnav4_4.1.3-7_amd64.deb (--unpack):22:00
penguin42 unable to move aside `./usr/share/bug/libdvdnav4' to install new version: Invalid cross-device link22:00
wolteryes but it has good feedback22:00
penguin42Jordan_U: So, I'd remove libdvdnav4 and see if it helps, but I'm not clear why it's complainig about libapt-pkg22:00
Jordan_Upenguin42: Which actually sounds like it's caused by the sandbox itself (as does the grub error).22:00
ikoniawolter: just wait for the final release22:01
wolteranyway, the partition should be put in the end if the other one is graphically drawn at the beginning, right?22:01
mfaroukgany body using ubuntu 10.10 on dell 505?22:01
penguin42Jordan_U: I wouldn't worry about the loaders.cache stuff, although not sure why it's happening22:01
ikoniawolter: why are you asking, you've said your confident22:01
penguin42mfaroukg: I'm not, but is it a question of whether it works or have you got a particular problem?22:01
wolteri said as well i didn't like partitioning, in case you misread22:02
ikoniawolter: didn't like doesn't mean you should understand it22:02
wolterand I think you could help instead of asking me pointless questions22:02
ikoniawolter: I think you should be able to partition a disk if your considering using a development release22:02
trismpenguin42: Jordan_U the gdk pixbuf loaders location was moved in maverick, as well has how the cache was stored, which is the reason for the errors, it's not a big deal though, it gets generated correctly at the end22:02
mfaroukgpenguin42: it works with older version of kernel only not the last one22:02
wolterikonia, and if I wasn't, wouldn't you help me just because of that22:03
wolter?22:03
ikoniamfaroukg: which one is causing the issue22:03
penguin42mfaroukg: What happens? And which version exactly works and which one doesn't ?22:03
ikoniawolter: probably not, I wouldn't help you put a development OS on your machine that you didn't understand the basics of22:03
mfaroukgplease help to get the list of versions and I will send you the list22:03
penguin42mfaroukg: Well what works and what doesn't - just tell us what you know so far22:04
Jordan_UTo be clear there is actual breakage, I currently get many errors and unconfigureable packages when I "sudo apt-get -f install".22:04
wolterdo you think partitions are of basic computer knowledge?22:04
ikoniawolter: I think it's basic Linux knowledge, and how to use the tool, yes22:04
mfaroukgthe problem it freezes whenever shows the ubuntu logo then it stops22:04
penguin42mfaroukg: And what was the last version that works?22:05
mfaroukgshould I restart to get the versions?or there is a way to get them now?22:05
penguin42mfaroukg: Well what did you do between it working and it stopping?22:06
trismJordan_U: yeah sorry, I meant the warnings, not the errors you see22:06
wolterikonia, based on that, very few linux users know the basics of the system they use, and therefore, "they shouldn't use linux"22:06
wolternice way of supporting your OS, ikonia22:06
ikoniawolter: they are not trying to use a development version22:06
penguin42mfaroukg: Is this before/after upgrade to Maverick or was it working after the upgrade to Maverick?22:06
mfaroukgpenguin42: I did nothing when it is loading22:06
TDJACR!locales > TDJACR22:06
ubottuTDJACR, please see my private message22:06
wolterikonia, ok, and how does partitioning differ on a development version from a normal release?22:07
wolteri'm curious22:07
ikoniawolter: the overall concepts don't differ, the tools normally don't differ, but can when things change, just as ext4 coming in, or different versions of the tools22:07
Jordan_Utrism: Np, your explanation gives me one less thing to worry about :)22:07
mfaroukgI was using the 9.10 then decided to upgrade through the upgrade manager, I found two versions of 10.10. by default it tries the latest but not working . I moved to the older and it works22:08
penguin42mfaroukg: OK, as it's booting hit the left shift key just as it comes out of the bios and you should get a grub menu that lets you edit the boot lines, you can select an older kernel and see if it helps; or you could try editing the boot line to remove the quiet and nosplash parameters off the end which might give mor einformation about what went wrong22:08
wolterthe questions i've asked so far are independent from which filesystem i will be using22:08
penguin42mfaroukg: If you have the older one running can you just tell us the answer to   uname -a22:08
ikoniawolter: you asked which file system you should use, that's not independant, and the position on the disk doesn't matter22:08
ikoniawolter: and as I said, if your using a development version you should understand the basics to get around any bugs that are in it, or report them back clearly22:09
ikoniaas 10.10 is not actually supported22:09
mfaroukgpenguin42: Linux zkw01-1157 2.6.32-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 17 20:26:08 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux22:09
wolterikonia, i can report bugs, that doesn't relate to my knowledge on partitioning22:09
penguin42mfaroukg: OK, so 2.6.32-x is from Lucid22:09
bullgard4_'~$ env; SHLVL=2'. System Information > Environment Variables: SHLVL=1. How to explain this defference?22:10
wolterand yes, which filesystem to use was my only question related to the filesystems topic22:10
ikoniawolter: your not asking about partitioning, your asking about how to use the tools and what file systems you should use, that shows your not aware of the current distro22:10
penguin42mfaroukg: So I think you are saying the Lucid (10.04) kernel works but the new Maverick (10.10) one doesn't?22:10
wolteryou could do a little less trolling22:10
bullgard4_s/defference/difference/22:10
Ken8521lol22:10
Jordan_Uwolter: ikonia: I think it's safe to say that this conversation is no longer productive :)22:10
mfaroukgpenguin42: it seems so !!22:10
wolterJordan_U, agree22:10
ikoniawolter: I'm not trolling at all, if I was I'd be making up facts rather than advising someone who's not confident with Linux basics to not use a development vesion22:10
wolterikonia, your taking the conversation to a pointless direction22:11
* Ken8521 thinks ikonia's speech sounds familiar..22:11
wolterthats how you are trolling, feel free to assist me not anymore22:11
penguin42mfaroukg: OK, so boot, select the new kernel and then edit off the nosplash and quiet and see if it tells us any more22:11
ikoniawolter: ok, so there you go then, 10.10 isn't actually supported, so good luck using it22:11
wolterthank you very much, I appreciate your very honest luck wishes22:12
ikoniawolter: they are22:12
wolterI didn't say they weren't22:12
mfaroukgpenguin42: please make clear about your request. I understood that I should press shift key till grub menu appears!!22:13
penguin42mfaroukg: OK, so when the menu comes up hit 'e' to edit and it should show a load of detail about the boot22:14
mfaroukgright I will come back later... thanks22:15
penguin42mfaroukg: Then use the error keys to scroll down to the line that starts with linux, move to the end of the line and delte the words quiet and splash, then hit ctrl-x to boot; it will probably still stop but it might give some debug as to why - and if it does and you can tell us what that debug is it might help us22:15
penguin42mfaroukg: a screen picture would work if it's the easiest way22:15
Jordan_Umfaroukg: You can also just select the "recovery mode" entry which will disable the splash screen.22:17
penguin42oh that might have been easier :-)22:17
mfaroukgpenguin42: there is lots of commands appearing and last one I could catch is ...scripts/init-bottom, then it flashes and fast commands appears and disappears faster22:32
penguin42mfaroukg: Does it eventually stop?22:33
mfaroukgpenguin42: yes it stops22:33
mfaroukgpenguin42: BTW I choose 2.6.31-22 instead of 2.6.32-2522:34
mfaroukgpenguin42: 2.6.32-25 is the one which it stops22:35
yofelmfaroukg: those are lucid kernels, what happens with 35?22:36
mfaroukgyofel: can see any !!22:37
penguin42mfaroukg: Did you up date to Maverick or not?22:38
mfaroukgpenguin42: I knew from the my friend that 32 is the 10.10 version. I got that update from the update manager and was telling 10.04.1 is the one should upgrade to22:40
penguin42mfaroukg: No, .32 is 10.04, 0.35 is the 10.1022:43
mfaroukgpenguin42: how wan I upgrade? shall I download the CD from the ubuntu.com ?22:44
penguin42mfaroukg: Well you can run update-manager -d and it will download the updates22:45
mfaroukgpenguin42: doning now ... thanks a lot22:48
* Jordan_U wonders if he should just go ahead with a real upgrade despite the errors.22:50
IdleOneJordan_U: go for it!22:50
IdleOneno guts, no glory.22:50
IdleOneand all that jazz22:51
Belial`is update manager notifying anyone else of updates?22:53
Belial`i have to actually check it to see if there is any available.22:53
