Sysii've heard about it16:57
Sysi..very little16:57
likemindeadSame here, Sysi...16:57
likemindeadThe ext4 developer says that btrfs is the way forward.16:58

skyjager434Hi there, I'm having trouble doing a fresh install of Xubuntu 10.04 on a PC with an Asus P6T and a Sapphire Radeon 5770 card...after I select "Install" from the bootloader I see the "xubuntu" logo for a moment and then the screen is black and nothing happens after that point. Any known problems with this hardware/solutions to this problem?18:46
likemindeadI'd try the alternate image (rather than the live desktop image).18:47
skyjager434Okay, downloading that. Any other special procedures I'd have to do with this image instead?18:48
likemindeadNope. It just tends to go more smoothly. :D18:52
skyjager434Cool!18:52

Tom22Hello, does anyone know how to set dolphin as default file manager in XUBUNTU?20:28
Tom22?20:30
cody-somervilleTom22, Hi20:31
cody-somervilleTom22, Applications > Settings > Xfce4 Settings Manager20:32
cody-somervilleTom22, Click 'Preferred Applications'20:32
cody-somervilleTom22, and then click the 'Utilities' tab20:32
Tom22cody-somerville, hey. there's only Terminal Emulator in there, no file manager20:33
cody-somervilleTom22, You should then be slect a default file manager from there.20:33
cody-somervilleTom22, What version of Xubuntu are you running?20:33
Tom22cody-somerville, it's crunchbang (which I believe is extremely closely related to ubuntu) with XFCE4 installed.20:33
mark76Try removing Thunar20:34
cody-somervilleTom22, I'm not familiar with Crunchbag. You might try their support channel for additional help.20:34
Tom22mark76, have done20:34
mark76And?20:34
Tom22mark76 now when I try opening folders:20:34
Tom22mark7620:35
Tom22Unable to launch "videos":20:35
Tom22This feature requires a file manager service present (such as that supplied by Thunar).20:35
mark76Ah20:35
Tom22cody-somerville, thank's for your help :)20:36
Tom22mark76 any ideas? :|20:36
mark76Hang on20:36
Tom22mark76 sure20:37
mark76Try this, but substitute Dolphin for PCManFM http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=105171320:38
Tom22thanks ;) I'll check that out20:38
mark76BRB20:43
mark76Incredible! I can't even get to the xfce desktop now20:46
Tom22:|20:46

Tom22leads me here20:47
Tom22https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-users/2006-May/076983.html20:47
mark76What the hell did they do in Ubuntu to make it impossible to use xfce?20:47
Tom22As root, edit the file /etc/xdg/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml. Search for20:47
Tom22"rox" and change it to "xffm".20:47
mark76Oh no. You don't don't want to do that20:47
mark76That's way old20:48
Tom22oh yeah20:48
Tom22200620:48
Tom22if you did the first 1:20:49
Tom22sudo rm /usr/bin/thunar20:49
Tom22sudo mv /usr/bin/thunar.save /usr/bin/thunar20:49
Tom22?20:49
mark76I didn't20:51
mark76I can't even get Xfce to work20:51
Tom22*sigh*20:51
Tom22maybe I should just go back to gnome ;P20:51
mark76Or KDE :p20:51
Tom22hmm20:51
Tom22What OS do you use?20:51
Sysiwhy nautilus?20:52
mark76Erm... Rox20:52
Sysithunar ♥ best single-click ever20:52
Sysialso works otherly20:52
Tom22mark, rox = kde?20:52
mark76No20:53
Tom22freebox?20:53
mark76It's based around the ROX file manager20:53
mark76But I do like to dip into Xfce every so often20:53
mark76Or I did before the Ubuntu devs broke it20:53
Tom22haha20:54
Tom22well20:54
Tom22On this laptop20:54
Tom22before, I had Kubuntu, KDE4.20:54
Tom22and it just seemed slow, and buggy20:54
mark76Which version of KDE4?20:54
Sysikde4.0 was just horrible20:55
Tom22I'm not sure? whatever version kubuntu 10.04 uses20:55
mark76That should be fine20:55
mark76Definitely not 4.020:56
Tom22well20:56
Tom22I had a problem with it, I posted on the forum20:56
Tom22no one replied20:56
mark76What's wrong with Thunar?20:57
Tom22Well20:58
Tom22the initial reason I went over to XFCE, Is I wanted to try and customize my own computer the way I like it20:58
Tom22from scratch20:58
Tom22and I thought XFCE was the best DE for that, being basic20:58
Sysiif you don't have skills.. :P20:58
Tom22Thunar, was the first thing I Wanted to get rid of, because I really like Dolphin :P20:58
Tom22I've been using Linux for about 6 years :P20:59
Tom22but alot of things are stiill new to me,20:59
mark76So you know your way around it then20:59
Tom22I dont fiddle as much as I should20:59
Tom22to learn20:59
mark76Oh right20:59
mark76Have you tried LXDE?20:59
Sysii think i may have reached the point where i don't want to learn more20:59
Sysiit's extremely confusing20:59
Tom22haha21:00
Tom22LXDE? Nope. I've tried; Gnome, KDE, XFCE, Freebox and that god awfull thing DSL uses.21:01
mark76What's Freebox?21:02
schuyler_235135Hi so after installing Xubuntu on a system with an Asus P6T mobo and a Sapphire ATI Radeon 5770 vid card, my monitors go into sleep mode after the "Xubuntu" splash screen shows for about a minute tops21:03
schuyler_235135Nothing shows up, suggesting an X server problem?21:03
Tom22yeah21:03
schuyler_235135What can I do about that?21:03
Tom22sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf21:03
Tom22fixed that for me21:03
Sysiyou need to use specific boot option..21:03
schuyler_235135how can I do that when my system doesn't load...?21:04
Sysigoogle knew21:04
schuyler_235135Debug boot option?21:04
Tom22ctrl + alt + f121:04
schuyler_235135Ctrl + Alt + F1 doesn't work21:04
Sysihttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=146396121:04
Tom22schuyler_235135, select recovery console21:05
Tom22schuyler_235135, in the GRUB menu21:05
schuyler_235135kk rebooting21:05
Tom22schuyler_235135, and run the command I gave you21:05
schuyler_235135delete the xorg.conf file?21:06
schuyler_235135then restart x?21:07
Sysixorg.xonf shouldn't exit by default at all21:07
Tom22then reboot21:07
Sysi*conf21:07
schuyler_235135yeah xorg.conf didn't exist21:08
schuyler_235135so obviously can't remove something that doesn't exist21:09
schuyler_235135i'm looking through the thread but any other ideas?21:09
Tom22maybe try and create it?21:09
schuyler_235135is there a default conf I should work with? :s21:09
schuyler_235135not to mention my vid card doesn't have any VGA on it21:10
schuyler_235135only DVI and HDMI21:10
Tom22try this:21:10
Tom22dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg21:10
schuyler_235135perhaps that's a reason why it's not showing anything?21:10
Sysino it's because of drivers21:11
schuyler_235135ahh21:11
schuyler_235135k i'll try that line21:11
Tom22(Y)21:11
Sysihum, that's for installation21:12
schuyler_235135That showed nothing21:12
schuyler_235135At least, no verbose21:12
Sysihttp://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9675960&postcount=3321:13
schuyler_235135so try failsafe graphics?21:14
schuyler_235135k that's working so far21:15
schuyler_235135*crossing fingers*21:15
jmichelsenyo hows the xubu world out there doing today!21:58
Tom22_just great at my end21:59
Tom22_hows it going with you?21:59
jmichelsennot too bad here, only one annoyance to speak of this week :)21:59
Tom22_oh good :P22:00
Tom22_and that annoyance is no longer annoying?22:00
jmichelsenbut that's what brings me here :) it's a computer annoyance and I need some help22:00
jmichelsenhaha22:00
Tom22_ah22:00
Tom22_I'll do my best :)22:00
jmichelsenok, I appreciate that :) I'll lay it out for ya22:00
Tom22_sure22:01
jmichelsenI have a wireless adapter, USB, connecting this box to my wi-router. The adapters been rock solid for years, but recently it's been just disconnecting maybe once or twice a day and it won't reconnect until I physically pull it out and plug it bck in..22:01
Tom22_Hm22:03
jmichelsenthis box is used for everything including my remote sessions from the outside world, so when I'm not home and it disconnects, I'm really put in a bad place :), I thought maybe the adapter was dying, but the dmesg output is really weird regardig the adapter so i thougth I'd try and fix it before replacing it22:03
Tom22_hmm, what's the make and model of the wifi adapter?22:03
jmichelsenIt's a belkin, USB- belkin F5D705022:04
Tom22_righto, give me a second ;)22:05
jmichelsenhttp://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=17921122:05
jmichelsenIt really had problems with Windows, but on Linux I've never had any more solid wireless adapter, it rock-ed :)22:05
Tom22_And it worked out of the box?22:07
jmichelsenyep22:07
jmichelsenI'm using the WICD connection manager now, but that's just by choice. It never had a problem with drivers, or the stock wi-manager on xubuntu22:07
Tom22_Have you tried re-installing the driver through package manager?22:09
jmichelsenI haven't, I access this machine via SSH 99%..22:11
Tom22_Ah I see22:11
Tom22_no gui?22:11
jmichelsenI'm a bit rusty on some stuff around here, I set this machine up and haven't had a problem for years so kinda forget how to work with it :), it does have a GUI though22:11
schuyler_235135Fatal server error: could not create lock file in /tmp/.tx0-lock22:12
Tom22_jmichelsen, don't worry22:13
schuyler_235135This happened after trying to tweak the card with some aticonfig stuff and setting RRand1.2 to false22:13
schuyler_235135is there any way I can start x back up fresh?22:13
Tom22_jmichelsen, we'll try command lind22:13
jmichelsenTom22_: sounds good, that's the way I prefer to work with it22:14
Tom22_jmichelsen, okay22:14
Tom22_schuyler_235135, sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg22:14
schuyler_235135Tom22_: that didn't work22:16
schuyler_235135there was no verbose from the command22:17
schuyler_235135and same error occured when trying to start X22:17
Tom22_jmichelsen, I wonder if Madwifi will help? sudo apt-get install mafwifi22:17
jmichelsenTom22_: Here's a pastebin with the dmesg output..this goes on for days http://pastebin.com/Seqzg0mV22:18
jmichelsenTom22_: I'll install madwifi though22:18
Tom22_jmichelsen, ok, there's no promise that it will work. Just trying to find a solution :)22:19
jmichelsenTom22_: I hear ya and appreciate your time22:19
Tom22_jmichelsen: [94616.436017] eth0: no IPv6 routers present [94625.520015] wlan1: no IPv6 routers present  - Suggests to me that your router is playing up? It looses contact with the IPv6 router? Do you use IPv6? or just IPv4.22:20
Tom22_schuyler_235135, give me a sec22:21
jmichelsenTom22_: just IPv4 and my eth0 is actually going right into a TV Tuner, not to an active internet connection22:22
Tom22_schuyler_235135, I think this may be your solution: http://john-willis.com/2010/01/remove-and-reinstall-xserver-on-ubuntu-9-10/22:23
Tom22_jmichelsen, can you post the output of: sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces22:24
Tom22_Just to let you know, my internet's been playing up, so If I suddenly disconnect, Its gone again. Not just me being rude :P22:25
jmichelsenTom22_:  :) no worries, same here as we are dealing with a flaky connection haha22:26
Tom22_;)22:27
jmichelsenTom22_: http://pastebin.com/qA8iYNct the output22:27
Tom22_jmichelsen, is there a DHCP enabled on your router?22:28
jmichelsenTom22_: yes22:28
Tom22_jmichelsen. Are there other computers connected to the same router which use DHCP?22:28
jmichelsenTom22_: Yes, and I static this IP as it's my makeshift server so I don't want it changing. I don't trust the routers ability to static the addresses22:29
Tom22_jmichelsen, I may be wrong, but my router's DHCP tends to give out IPs in a low range: *.*.*.3 < for example. So is it possible that DHCP is assigning another computer with the same one that you've already assigned as a static to this server?22:31
schuyler_235135Nah I got xserver to work now22:31
schuyler_235135but now my ATI Graphics card isn't working properly22:31
schuyler_235135maybe run aticonfig?22:31
Tom22_I'd download the official ones22:31
Tom22_from their site22:31
schuyler_235135i did that22:32
schuyler_235135and ran it22:32
schuyler_235135automatic22:32
schuyler_235135but i might need to do aticonfig --initial22:32
Tom22_give it a try. All I know, is that ATI are notorious for rubbish linux support22:32
schuyler_235135indeed they are22:33
Tom22_AMD need to shape up a bit :P22:33
mark76I have MAD22:35
mark76AMD22:35
Tom22_Me too. Phenom X4 3.2GHz, and ATI HD 489022:35
jmichelsenTom22_: this router's DHCP is actually kinda funny and assigns higher IP's to new machines, but my network has been set up for a number of years, I wonder if that could have changed. None of the other machines, some wireless, are having issues22:36
Tom22_jmichelsen, I understand if you don't want to change the IP, but this is what I would do in your situation: "sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces" and change "192.168.1.2" to "192.168.1.19" or something (still remaining low, if your DHCP range is high). Then save the nano, and "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart" Then just change the IP forwarding in your router to whatever you need. All that will change, is the IP, it will still func22:40
Tom22_jmichelsen, I've had a number of network connection problems before, nearly all of them were fixed by assigning the PC a fresh IP22:40
jmichelsenTom22_: i've got no problems trying it out :) did that dmesg make any sense though?22:41
schuyler_okay I've installed the ATI driver22:41
schuyler_but when trying to run aticonfig --initial22:41
Tom22_jmichelsen, It seemed as if the PC lost connection with the router. But the wifi dongle was still searching for something to connect to? :| it seems weird to me.22:41
schuyler_I get "Unable to find any supported Screen sections"22:42
Tom22_jmichelsen, which is why it makes me wonder about IP conflicts, the router might be denying it access22:42
jmichelsenTom22_: ok, changing it nnow, I may get disc22:42
jmichelsenTom22_: dosconnected22:42
Tom22_jmichelsen, no problems22:43
Tom22_schuyler_, it seems like your X server is well and truly screwed up. I'd suggest following the tutorial above: http://john-willis.com/2010/01/remove-and-reinstall-xserver-on-ubuntu-9-10/22:43
schuyler_Nah it was the xorg.conf file22:45
schuyler_I deleted it and reran aticonfig --initial22:45
schuyler_It wrote a new xorg.conf file for me22:45
schuyler_Keep that link handy though, I'm gonna try a restart now22:46
Tom22_schuyler_, ok then it's written a scrn res which is too high for you, try editing it manually22:46
schuyler_K I'm booted in normal Xubuntu (yay)22:49
schuyler_but now I need to configure a dual-screen setu22:49
schuyler_*steup22:49
schuyler_*steup22:49
schuyler_wow. setup22:49
schuyler_amdcccle doesn't ever show a panel...22:50
geohello22:53
Tom22_geo hey22:56
geoare you a long term xubuntu user?23:02
Tom22_geo, Ubuntu user - yes, Xubuntu, nope.23:06
geoI'm in the same boat tom, have an old laptop that I put ubuntu on because gnome was too sluggish23:08
Tom22_geo, ah, I see. and you have a problem with xubuntu?23:09
geonope, no problems really, was just curious about finding some lighter programs23:10
Tom22_geo, I see. If you want to go even lighter than XFCE, you could always try DSL, Puppy Linux or Crunchbang Freebox DE23:11
Tom22_[mark76] welcome back mark23:12
