iNfRaC00Lare you satisfied with mint00:02
iNfRaC00Lit runs gnome , right?00:03
Se7enohyea ..absolutely00:03
anj_isn't removing pulseaudio an option?00:03
Se7enactually it has all sort of flavors00:03
iNfRaC00Lanj_:  and that leaves me with what audio support00:03
Se7enFluxbox Xfce KDE Gnome LXDE00:04
anj_I have it uninstalled and no problems with audio00:04
iNfRaC00Lanj_: will try00:04
anj_but I do have a soundcard with hardware-mixing00:04
iNfRaC00LSe7en: do you update offten?00:05
Se7eniNfRaC00L: I suggest you try that first on a Live CD00:07
Se7enjust in case00:07
Se7enyou mean like a system update ?00:07
iNfRaC00Lwhat I've learned in KDE that if i works fine - don't update00:07
iNfRaC00Lyeah00:08

iNfRaC00Lyea, but i have that onboard thingy for now00:10
Se7enKDE played well with my intel soundcard00:10
Se7enwhich one you use iNfRaC00L ?00:10

anj_can anyone install KDM themes?00:20
anj_from the system settings module?00:20
anj_eep, floodbot is gonna get me if I continue like this00:20
James147anj_: via the "get new stuff" button?00:21
anj_James147: in KDE 4.5.1, system settings -> login screen -> theme -> Get new theme00:22
anj_but it does bring up a window titled "Get Hot New Stuff"00:22
James147anj_: yeah, quite a few of the themes dont work with that method... its improving slowly over time but the ones that dont are best grabed directly from kde-look.org00:22
iNfRaC00Lanj_:  it says installed but nothing happens00:23
iNfRaC00Lno theme00:23
anj_yeah, it used to work before but now...00:24
anj_and *something* keeps killing my font settings00:25
anj_returning them to a very small point size ubuntu font00:25
anj_meh00:25
anj_nice font, though00:25
iNfRaC00Lsmiliar stuff happens to me lately00:26
iNfRaC00Lare those thinmgs so often?00:26
anj_it started when I upgraded to the Maverick release candidate00:26
Se7enhow do I alter that bouncing icon right nxt my cursor ?00:27
James147anj_: try creating a new user, see if the fonts behave right on that... if they do then its a problem with one of the config files00:27
anj_James147, might try that later. any idea *which* config file it might be?00:28
James147anj_: not sure, but what I generally do is rename the .kde folder on the orignal user then test it... if it works then then rename it back and lookin inside that :)00:29
anj_Se7en: in KDE 4.5.1: bring up System Settings, go to Application and System Notifications, go to Launch Feedback00:29
iNfRaC00Lanj_:  bouncing cursor -> Common Appearance->Application and System Notifications->Launch Feedback00:30
Se7enthank you00:30
anj_James147: ugh! :)00:30
anj_James147: too much stress for too little now. :p00:30
James147anj_: note that its best to rename .kde when you arent loged in :)  (at least in the gui)00:31
anj_James147: yah I just suspect it's a package being upgraded that resets the fonts00:31
anj_just had about a million upgrades that may have caused this00:32
anj_oh, and how about the quick access widget? if I put any of those on my desktop and set their location to (say) smb:/ or some FTP directory, they crash plasma-desktop every time. Poo.00:34
iNfRaC00Ldo you have that desktop-folder widget?00:37
anj_have it? yes, but not using one00:37
anj_er, wait, what's desktop-folder?00:37
iNfRaC00Li think that's name of the widget... nvm00:38
anj_folder view00:38
anj_quick access00:38
anj_not sure desktop-folder exists.00:38
iNfRaC00Lfolder view, right.. anyway if u middleclick right below  + sign it opens folders in tooltip-like window00:39
iNfRaC00Ldiscovered it by accident00:40
anj_if you use the right plasma desktop theme, you can even see the "invisible" icon that's under the "+" sign00:40
anj_it's an up-arrow00:40
anj_and a left-click will do00:41
iNfRaC00Lyes it truly works, i just see no icon :)00:41
anj_yah it depends on the theme if you can see the icon.00:42
anj_I guess they haven't all been updated for this feature yet.00:42
iNfRaC00Land i thought i've discovered an easter egg :)00:42
anj_it confused me for a while...00:43
anj_the folder-popup thingie was automatic for a while, now it's not anymore00:43
anj_now you have to click on the up-arrow icon (which is invisible in some themes)00:43

deborahi am using kubuntu 8.10. is it better to do wait for 10 Oct or should i upgrade to the latest now?02:02

Se7enMy suggestion is wait for the release , updating may be a stressful process ya know02:04

moetunesdeborah:  it depends on your download speed02:06
Se7enwell except when its a LTS version02:06
deborahcable02:06
deborahi am downloading 9.04 now, it will take 42 minutes. That is pretty good.02:07
deborahWhat is an LTS version?02:07
moetunesdeborah:  personally I would reinstall to get the benefits of the newer ext4 filesystem02:07
moetunes!lts02:07
ubottuLTS means Long Term Support. LTS versions of Ubuntu will be supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server. The current LTS version of Ubuntu is !Lucid (Lucid Lynx 10.04)02:07
deborahOkay. That is what my friend said. I didnt need to wait for the next one on the 10th. I could just upgrade to it now.02:08
moetunesdeborah:  to upgrade you use the upgrade manager not the install iso02:08
deborahThanks Moetunes. I found it. :)02:09

deborahIs there a big difference btween the 4 thingy, and now?02:11

`DT`i keep having problems running a program. keeps telling me "permission denied"02:25

moetunesizinucs:  from what I've seen on here it is a good idea to try it with a new user first03:00
izinucsmoetunes: new user?  isn't it a system wide upgrade?03:00
moetunesizinucs:  it only upgrades the kde part03:01
moetunesizinucs:  but it can mess things up in the dot files having two diff kde configs afaik03:01
izinucsmoetunes: ah.. so on boot do I switch "sessions" to the newer one?03:02
moetunesizinucs:  in your home folder now you have config files for kde4.4 - using a new user will not mix the config files for 4.5 with the ones you have for 4.403:03

avihayyou need to be more specific. is it just logout, or shutdown and reboot? you don't have the option to logout or you have, and when you use it it doesn't do anything?18:47

jhutchins_ltOSnotfound: What we may be dealing with here is that the different bioses hash the password differently.19:06
OSnotfoundIt was from a laptop, I suppose it could have been tied to the TPM Chip as well... if it has one19:08

kyubutsuit be more practical if kickoff only had applications, computer, and leave ..  favorites and recently used are just redundant21:15

some1_can I install kubuntu x64 without swap with 3 Gb of ram?21:28
vbgunzsome1_: sure. absolutely. say goodbye to hibernation/resume21:29
BluesKajonly if you have more than 4G RAM, hence you should have a swap of about 4-5G21:29
vbgunzI don't understand though, why not give up just 6GB to swap?21:30

rork_kyubutsu: computer and recently used are redundant, favorites, leave and programs are enough. I guess it would be practical if there was a setting for which menu's to activate.21:41
kyubutsuso, a kickoff with applications, favorites and leave; i still would favor recently used against favorites anyway21:46
kyubutsunow, how to get that done, you know?21:46
rork_I'm afraid they removed a lot of settings like this from KDE 3, I don't know any other way then grabbing the source, removing some parts and make a new widget21:49

djSeequeHi, if I install 10.10 RC today, will it automatically get updated to the released version after Monday (via package updates), or will I have to reinstall?22:09
BluesKajdjSeeque, it will automatically update to the final release when you update22:14
djSeequeBluesKaj: thanks!  That's what I figured22:20
djSeequetime to move on from 8.04 :-)22:20

BluesKajdjSeeque, a bit of advice , if you haven't done so in the past . Install kubuntu to a / partition and create a /home partition for your data . Then, next time you do a clean install , just istall the OS to / and your dataon the /home partition will be unaffected.22:28
ErtheLast night I installed a security update/some bug fix updates and now I can't boot unless I boot from one of the older kernel versions, did anyone else experience this?22:29
djSeequeBluesKaj: that makes a lot of sense, and it's occurred to me before22:29
djSeequemaybe I'll do it for the Maverick install22:29
ErtheBooting with 2.6.32-25 causes a kernel panic22:29
BluesKajdjSeeque, it's common practice by ppl who follow each new release22:30
djSeequeBluesKaj: sure, seems obvious in retrospect. Thanks!22:31
BluesKajdjSeeque, np :)22:31
djSeequeany other suggestions about partitioning?  Up to now I only use two, for / and /boot.  Now I'll add /home.  anything else obvious?22:33
