jrmywell it didnt upgrade anything so i dot think that works for xchat10:40
moetuneswell lets start with the xubuntu version you have - if it is the current backports won't help much10:41
moetunes!version10:41
ubottuTo find out what version of Ubuntu you have, type « lsb_release -a » in a !shell - To know the available version of a package, « apt-cache policy <package> »10:41

jrmyin this it says gnome 2.30.210:52
Sysiin 10.04, it's installed by default10:53
jrmyidk i dont understand i guess10:53
moetunesxubuntu has the same base as ubuntu - xubuntu uses xfce where ubuntu uses gnome - some gnome apps are in xubuntu 'causes xfce uses gtk like gnome but is short of some things10:55

jrmyis gnu in gnu a name?11:05
jrmyit says gnu's not unix11:05
Sysignu names ♥11:06
jrmybecause that part confuses me11:06
Sysigimp, gnu image manipulator11:06
Sysignu, gnu's not unix11:06
jrmyso gnu is basically a name11:06
moetunesin the open source world there are lots of self referencing acronyms - gnu is not unix11:06
Sysiwine, wine's not an emulator11:06
moetunesGnu Is Not Unix11:06

Sysiyes11:07
Sysias name says11:07
jrmyi totally dont understand wine then11:07
jrmyis unix easy to use liek windows?11:08
jrmylike*11:08
jrmymore user friendly in one sense11:08
jrmyand or not very complicated to use11:08
moetuneswhen you first used windows you had to learn how to use a mouse and install stuff - same in linux distros' - you need to learn a couple of things11:10
moetunesif you tried to use a mac you would need to learn some stuff11:11
jrmythen I'm thinking it wil take me a few years to get used to ubuntu11:12
jrmyit would probably be dumb to swtich to another distro at this point11:12
jrmyswitch*11:12
moetunesdepend on what you want to do - mostly it is just learning that apps are free and in the package manager and how to use the package manager11:13
moetunesin windows if you install a new app you have to learn it - nothing different here11:14
jrmymy main use for a computer is games and everyday web browsing11:15
jrmylike email checking and facebook11:16
jrmythe games part is lacking for my old and low end computer11:16
jrmywine wont work with most of the old games ive tried11:16
jrmyor X crashes11:16
jrmydont know what hardware problems i coudl have11:17
jrmynot my ram however since ive checked for errors11:17
moetunesthat sounds like either the card can't do the game or you need a better graphics driver11:18
jrmyi have 8MB and ive been playing games at most that need this much11:18
moetunesfor wine I would check the appdb to see if it is supported11:18

jrmyso i perhaps my graphics driver lacks11:18
jrmyapparently sin, red alert, and incoming are suppose to work11:19
moetunesat 8mb I don't think it would - old cards have good support unless they are sis afaik11:19
jrmyremind me what afaik means again11:19
moetunesas far as I know11:19
jrmyand sis?11:20
moetunessis is a brand of video card - in terminal   lspci   will tell what you use11:20
moetunesit'll be near the end of what that command returns11:21
jrmyactually the end shows other stuff11:22
jrmythe first three talk about the graphics11:22
moetunesk11:22
jrmyunless host bridge is something else11:22
moetuneshost bridge IS something else11:22
jrmyok11:22
jrmythen yeah it says vga compatible controller and display controller11:23
moetunesthe one with vga in it11:23
moetunesyep :]11:23
jrmysince i have a laptop i have both i assume11:23
jrmywhich the 2 are obvious for there uses11:24
moetunesif you have somewhere to plug in an external monitor then yep11:24
jrmyright11:24
jrmyi have a parallel and a serial port too11:24
jrmywhich i dont know what serial is used for11:24
moetunesparallel is printer port11:25
jrmyi know11:25
jrmyi said i dot know what serial is used for11:25
jrmydont*11:25
jrmyi really wish i could boot with a usb device11:25
moetunesserial is for add on devices rarely used by most folk11:25
jrmyok11:26
moetunessounds like the hardware is too old for that11:26
jrmyis there any way to enable this?11:26
jrmyive heard its dumb to flash a new bios11:26
jrmyi think one of my friends are knowledgeable enough to do so11:26
moetunesI have heard there is an app you can use on a floppy disk to help that but I know nothing about it11:27
jrmywell i have a floppy drive11:27
jrmyand a whole bunch of used floppy discs11:27
jrmywhich are just sitting around doing nothing11:28
jrmyi dotn think i have enough of them to install a different os though11:28
jrmysince each are 1.44MB11:28
jrmylol11:28
moetuneshehe11:28
jrmyi might have about 20 of them however11:30
moetunesthey do rot quick ...11:31
jrmy28.8MB lol11:31
jrmywell i dont know how old they are anyways11:31
jrmywhich they are probably useless11:32
jrmyi wonder how big windows 98 is11:32
moetunes256mb iirc11:32
moetunesor one install I did was11:33
jrmyyeah i wouldnt have enough space that way11:34
jrmyheh11:34
jrmyi'd need more like 200 floppies11:34
jrmylol11:34
moetunessounds like you don't have a cd drive?11:34
jrmyi do11:35
jrmyi just dont have discs11:35
moetunesok :]11:35
jrmyif i had some cd's i could burn them with my desktop11:35
jrmybut yeah i only have dvd+r's11:35
jrmywhich is useless to me11:35
moetunesthere are other ways to install but they can be complicated11:38
jrmyah11:38
moetunes!install11:38

jrmywell if that floppy drive thing would work then i'd try that11:40
jrmysince my original plan was to try other distros not install them11:41
moetunesI've only heard about it in passing on irc - I don't have any floppy drives here at all11:42
jrmywell i can take a long journey with google i suppose11:42
moetunesI would recommend using   www.google.com/linux11:43
moetunesinstead of just www.google.com11:43
jrmythat exists?11:44
moetunesyep11:44
moetunesmostly what I use11:44
moetuneshas a penguin on it11:45
jrmyi just might replace my default search engine with that11:45

mark76I've figured out why Xfce/Xubuntu keeps crashing12:22
mark76It's Xfwm12:24
mark76Hey DBeets12:29
DBeetsHi12:29
DBeetsI never did get that figured out. I just went with a new window.12:29
mark76Xfwm has been making my xfce session crash12:29
Sysixfwm pretty much is xfce-session12:30
mark76I'm running openbox with xfce4-session, xfdesktop and xfce4-panel and it's working just fine12:30
mark76Apart from having to use the 3 finger salute to log out12:31
mark76Now all I have to do is find out why xfwm4 is misbehaing12:31
mark76misbehaving12:31
mark76I think you can only change tab names on a per session basis DBeets12:31
mark76If I run xfwm4 --replace the session will crash12:33
DBeetsYeah, you'd think there would be a command to at least open a new tab and run a command.12:35
DBeetsOr can;t the shell interact that way?12:35
jrmywill it work if you do it with tty?12:35
mark76I was right12:35
mark76xfwm4 did crash the session12:36
Sysimark76: try removing xfwm config12:36

mark76Nope. That wasn't it12:42
mark76There's definitely no xfwm4 config file in my home directory12:44
Sysidid you try that locate12:45
mark76Yep12:45
Sysiinteresting12:45
mark76It just lead me to the xfwm4 folder in the xfe4 folder in the .config folder12:45
mark76Which was empty12:45
mark76I've removed and reinstalled xfwm12:48
mark76BRB12:48
mark76Nope, Sysi. It doesn't even get to the desktop12:51
jrmyprobably dumb if i give advise12:52

charlie-tca!help18:15
