jrmysomeone explain the difference between lubuntu vs ubuntu and xubuntu?00:49
Kurdistanlubuntu use lxde and xubuntu xfce00:51
Kurdistanboth is good. abot flavor and what you want from distro.00:52
jrmyi dont know if i care so much.. i do liek how xubuntu's setup is and the xfce terminal.. but speed is the main issue00:52
Kurdistanjrmy I think lubuntu can be faster00:53
Kurdistanlubuntu is lighther00:53
jrmyis there screen shots of lubuntu?00:53
Kurdistanjrmy yes00:54
jrmywill i find them on the lubuntu website?00:54

latiterhey00:56
latiteranyone here?00:56
jrmy!help00:57
ubot5Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)00:57
jrmyim not sure if i want to switch to lubuntu00:58
Tir_Eoghangive the livecd a try00:59
Kurdistanjrmy if you are pleased with xubuntu stay with xubuntu00:59
latiterhehe kk . Aynone has an idea for that? I've got a Dell latitute laptop with a broadcom chip it is the 4306 rev. 3.... but it's working with the b43 drivers not with the legacy like it was said in the tut. but in ubuntu this is no issue, in lubuntu there is no b43-fwcutter or anyhting.. i haven't got wlan nor a lan connection, how can i install the wlan driver?01:00
jrmywell i had no knowledge of lubutnu till now.. i had switched from ubuntu because of speed issue when i heard about xubuntu01:00
jrmyKurdistan: where might i find a list of preinstalled apps and other stuff?01:01
Kurdistanfor lubuntu or xubuntu?01:02
latiterifconfig wlan0 = SIOSCIFFLAGS: No such file or directory01:02
jrmyKurdistan: lubuntu01:02
jrmyi pretty much know xubuntu now01:02
Kurdistanjrmy honestly did you take a look at the pictures?01:03
jrmyyes01:03
Kurdistanthere you can see :) default application in lubuntu lucid01:03
Kurdistanmaverick have replaced some and removed some01:04
jrmyah, i didnt notice t showing all the apps01:04
Kurdistan:)01:05
jrmywhat does it use liek how ubuntu and xubuntu use thunar and nautilus01:05
jrmy(dont know what this is called)01:05
Kurdistanjrmy pcman01:05
Kurdistanit is lighter01:06
Kurdistanlike I said if you like xubuntu stay with xubuntu01:06
jrmyi'll have to try it to like it or not01:07
Kurdistanbut if you want a lighter ubuntu derivate lubuntu is the one01:07
Kurdistandownload the livecd burn to a cd or usb01:07
jrmyright01:07
Kurdistanif you have really old computer I think lubuntu is better01:08
Kurdistanit uses less ram01:08
Kurdistanbut then xubuntu have som goddies that lubuntu lacks01:08
jrmywhich are?01:09
Kurdistanlatiter stil here?01:09
latiteryeah01:09
Kurdistantry out wifi rader or wicd01:09
Kurdistanif you want your wifi connection to work if lubuntus doesnt01:10
latitermhm i don't think that's the problem.01:10
latiterthe problem is that my wifi card needs firmware which isn't installed01:10
Kurdistanlatiter it fined mine out of the box01:10
latiterhow can i install wicd without being connected to a network? ;)01:11
Kurdistandamn is it late. I think you can look in terminal. but now I can not remenber command lines. :)01:11
jrmylol01:12
jrmyi just realized that01:12
Kurdistanlatiter you are connectet. :)01:12
latiteryeah, with another pc01:12
jrmywell if you have a flash drive im sure its an easy task01:12
Kurdistan:) I hope you have remenberd to press wifi button01:12
jrmyi hate it when i do that01:13
latiterNo. How should it be an easy task when i have a flash drive? the only solution i can think of is, i will build fwcutter on my own and ectracting witht that the driver. mhm01:14
phillwlatiter: is it a wifi problem or ethernet?01:14
latiterit is a problem with my wlan card... the driver seems okay. but the firmware is needed ( broadcom 4306 rev.3) ... i tetsted it with arch linux where it needed the b43 firmware from the wlan site of kernel.org01:15
Kurdistanhave nice evening01:16
KurdistanI am going to bad01:16
latitergood night01:16
latiterIt is somehow strange, that it is no issue with ubuntu, but with lubuntu.01:17
phillwlatiter: that is odd, as lubuntu is built on the ubuntu kernel. However http://ubuntu-virginia.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1368699 may be of help?01:18
latiterthanks phillw, but what is meant by navigating to the pool ?01:21
phillwlatiter: are you running from live usb?01:22
latiterno installed from a usb01:22
latiterrunning the system already01:23
phillwthen you do need that section, that is only for people running off usb01:23
phillwlatiter: take a bit of time and read through that posting, last time I needed broadcom with lubuntu I just got it via restricted drivers.01:24
latiteryeah thanks for that i'm trying it!01:25
aguitelphillw, hello ,what about lubuntu 10.10?01:27
phillwaguitel: lubuntu 10.10 will be out when it is ready, we are not tied to this 10/10/10 stuff, Julien will only release it when built and happy.01:28
aguitelphillw, ok01:28
latitermhm i installed b43-fwcutter now through the .deb package...but it won't process the driver =/01:34
phillwlatiter: I got mine working okay, for info on wireless problems I'd really suggest heading over to http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=336 they have a set of stickies you can read and you can also ask specific questions (please use the lubuntu tag and mention you're using lubuntu, so they can help you better).01:40
jrmycan lubuntu be just as useful as ubuntu?02:41
jrmyas for what you can use02:41
jrmyidk maybe that is to broad of a question02:41

|friTTe|phillw,  dont stress to much now =) sit back and relax..enjoy the release and torrents and all20:23
|friTTe|oops20:23
phillw|friTTe|: I still have another 10 pages of wiki pages to update !!!!20:24
* phillw is going to kill Zach.20:25
|friTTe|hmm sounds hard20:28
phillwI've got the main pages done, we don't need the new area done urgently as it is for the 11.04 release cycle. But I hate having the pages not in sync with eachother.20:31
mark76Is there a workaround for the 0.9.7 desktop issue?20:42
phillwmark76: I'm assuming you are referring to pcmanfm, which issue are you having?20:49
mark76When I use pcmanfm 0.9.7 to set the wallpaper it sits at the top of the stack rather than the bottom20:51
slow-motionwhy is aptitude no longer included in the normal installation?20:53
phillwmark76: you'd probably be better of asking on the mailing list https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/GettingInvolved20:55
phillwslow-motion: that was a ubuntu decisions, and there has been immense amounts of grief over it.20:55
phillwI use apt, so it does not affect me.20:56
mark76I wonder if a newer version of pcmanfm solves the issue20:56
phillwmark76: what version of lubuntu are you running?20:57
mark7610.1020:57
sebsebsebnice Unity in Lubuntu :D20:58
sebsebsebon a desktop20:58
phillwyou will have the most recent version of pcmanfm, then. File a bug via https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/ReportingBugs20:58
phillwif pcman does not know of the issue, he cannot fix it :)20:59
mark76Hmm, It would appear that xchat doesn't know how to open links in Chromium21:01
mark76Reporting bugs is technical and complicated. I'll wait for someone else to have the same problem and use Nitrogen in the meantime21:06
phillwmark76: that would either be an xchat bug, or a chromium one. as I don't use xchat as my client and chromium works fine, my bet is on xchat :)21:07
mark76Yep21:08
mark76Mine too21:08
* phillw is old fashioned and still uses pidgin ;)21:08
mark76It's really all there is apart from empathy, kopete and an IRC client with bitlbee21:09
phillwI use it as it is a one stop shop for my IRC, my Yahoo!, AIM and MSN accounts. It may not the best one in the world, but it's pretty bomb proof :D21:10
phillwthe mozilla group do an IRC client, if i recall. Or it may be a server that they do.21:11
floatingis that ubuntus new 'me menu' thing there on lubuntu too ?21:14
mark76Chatzilla, Phil21:15
floatingor to install that or some of those new ubuntu things, would there be lot of bad dependencies21:15
gilirsorry phillw, I think we will have a lots of questions/feedbacks in the next days :)21:20
phillwgilir: the channel is now being logged, so we can go back through them and see what issues etc. there are. (Got the log-bot just in time :D )21:21
phillwgilir: my busiest day was 9.10, I made over 500 posts on the forum in 14 hours !!!21:21
floatingmy little sister has a crappy netbook. just checked ubuntus page for netbook edition. it advertised 'me menu', ubuntu one, and unity there.. I guess my little sister would like some of that stuff, but i'd rather install a basic lubuntu and go from there.. I hope it'd be easy to add some of that new social networking sugar that ubuntu has recently come up21:22
gilirphillw, impresive :)21:22
phillwtiring :)21:23
hosokahello all21:25
phillwfloating: the thing to bear in mind is that you can drag in all of GNOMES family with certain applications, watch over what an application wants to bring along as its dependent relatives :p21:25
phillwwb hosoka21:25
hosokaIs there a way to upgrade Lubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 ? Is there a same path like in Ubuntu to upgrade from terminal or Alt+F221:26
gilirfloating, me-menu depends on telepathy (empathy) and gwibber, which is not a little depends for Lubuntu21:26
floatinghow much dependencies could I tolerate21:26
gilironly you have the answer :)21:27
phillwhosoka: it should be in update manager?  I've actually not asked the question yet of gilir how people can update from a beta to a beta21:27
phillwfloating: a lot depends on RAM and secondarily processor power.21:28
floatingsounds like it doesn't have much dependencies, if just 2... or does these 2 mean, that there will be lot to install21:28
hosokaCurrently testing the 10.04 and now get the message in Update Manager to upgrade..... but not to Lubuntu 10.10 but rather Ubuntu 10.10  :-)21:28
phillwfloating: if there are only two, and they are not huge, you 'should' be okay.21:28
floatingwould basic lubuntu user think that's too many dependencies21:29
gilirhosoka, Ubuntu 10.10 mean Lubuntu 10.10 in this case :)21:29
phillwgilir: do you have an answer to that one?21:29
phillwthanks, gilir I know I'm going to get asked it :)21:29
hosokagilir: hello to u, I will try that now.21:30
floatingguess I can install and try it out, thx21:30
floatingmgonna install this 10.10 with unetbootin.. I guess the installation should go smoothly21:31
|friTTe|floating,  gonna do the same on my netbook in a bit, just moving some stuff to exthdd21:35
|friTTe|had Pmint ice but it felt so clogged21:35
mark76Anyone know what this alarm clock that appeared in my notification area when I rebooted after upgrading came from?21:41
phillwmark76: not guilty :)21:43
|friTTe|hehehe21:44
|friTTe|phillw,  hows your connection doing?21:44

|friTTe|you know if theres any problem hooking up 3g dongles in 10.10?21:54
|friTTe|i use to grab that usbmodeswitcher21:54
phillw|friTTe|: there are two other methods at http://forum.phillw.net/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=92 if modeswitch does not work.21:57

mark76Does Lubuntu have a default GTK theme now?22:14
mark76I'm guessing it's Bluebird22:14
mark76Nope. Wrong again22:18
floatingi screwed up! I installed lubuntu10.10 to my notebook that had XP on it. it isntalled grub and it had xp entry there. Now when I booted up lubuntu, I went to edit the boot file to make XP default. I did it by editing 7etc/default/grub or such, after I edited the value i ran 'update-grub' as suggested. Now when I boot up, the file only contains the ubuntu entries :o22:26
floatingand I didn't take backup of the file :(22:26
|friTTe|that sucks to hear22:27
