Kurdistan | hello :P | 00:37 |
---|---|---|
charlie-tca | !hi | Kurdistan | 00:37 |
ubottu | Kurdistan: Hi!, Welcome to #xubuntu! Feel free to ask questions and help people out. The channel guidelines are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines. Enjoy your stay! | 00:37 |
Kurdistan | charlie-tca you seem to be :) real xubuntu friend | 00:39 |
charlie-tca | I try hard | 00:39 |
Kurdistan | xubuntu is good. but light like lubuntu for old computers. | 00:39 |
Kurdistan | but if somebody like the apperence of xfce and likes the best buntu control center xubuntu is perfect | 00:40 |
charlie-tca | :-) | 00:40 |
Kurdistan | *not light like lubuntu | 00:40 |
charlie-tca | lubuntu is about 30% lighter then Xubuntu, which is about 30% lighter than Ubuntu. | 00:41 |
Kurdistan | charlie-tca you know which network manager xubuntu maverick will use? | 00:41 |
charlie-tca | Same as it has been | 00:41 |
Kurdistan | charlie-tca according to distrowatch lubuntu is bigger then both xubuntu/kubuntu | 00:41 |
charlie-tca | Lubuntu is new, it gets users trying it. Of course, you can not use it without adding a lot of applications, or so I have heard. | 00:42 |
Kurdistan | what will be different from xubuntu lucid. not taking about kernel etc. more default apps and so on. | 00:43 |
charlie-tca | huh? lucid is 10.04, it is already out | 00:43 |
charlie-tca | Do you mean maverick? | 00:43 |
Kurdistan | charlie-tca I mean if you compare defualt apps etc in lucid with maverick | 00:44 |
Kurdistan | what have changed? | 00:44 |
Kurdistan | what have gone and come | 00:44 |
Kurdistan | replaced | 00:44 |
Kurdistan | etc | 00:44 |
charlie-tca | We replaced brasero with xfburn, replaced Gnome-task-manager with xfce4-task-manager, replaced totem movie player with parole | 00:45 |
charlie-tca | upgraded xfce4 to 4.6.2 | 00:45 |
Kurdistan | thats it? | 00:45 |
charlie-tca | that's a lot for just a couple of developers to do | 00:46 |
Kurdistan | :) ok | 00:46 |
Kurdistan | so upgrading xfce is no more bug-free? | 00:47 |
charlie-tca | For me, it is bug free | 00:47 |
charlie-tca | I am running maverick | 00:47 |
Kurdistan | charlie-tca be honest is it much better then xubuntu lucid? | 00:49 |
Kurdistan | xubuntu was fast when I tried and liked the control center | 00:49 |
Kurdistan | but the network manager | 00:50 |
Sysi | lucid is LTS. recommendable | 00:50 |
Kurdistan | applet did come up late | 00:50 |
Kurdistan | everything in the desktop was running but network-applet did take alot more time | 00:50 |
charlie-tca | If you are happy with 10.04, there is no reason to upgrade. Just install xfburn to replace brasero, if you want | 00:50 |
Kurdistan | I hope that bug is gone | 00:50 |
Sysi | propiatary driver? | 00:50 |
jrmy | whats the difference between lubuntu and xubuntu? | 00:51 |
Kurdistan | sysi you asked me? | 00:51 |
Sysi | yes | 00:51 |
charlie-tca | That's a good question, jrmy | 00:51 |
charlie-tca | jrmy: lubuntu uses lxde and xubuntu uses Xfce | 00:51 |
Sysi | !lxde | jrmy | 00:51 |
Sysi | ubottu occasionally sucks | 00:51 |
charlie-tca | jrmy: Xubuntu is useable right after the installation, with good default applications ready for you | 00:52 |
Kurdistan | sysi yes I normally install nvidia closed drivers | 00:52 |
Sysi | Kurdistan: i ment for wifi | 00:52 |
jrmy | lol | 00:53 |
Kurdistan | sysi I dont really remenber | 00:53 |
Kurdistan | was long time ago I tried xubuntu | 00:53 |
Kurdistan | would that make any difference? | 00:53 |
Sysi | afaik that can't slow down nm-applet | 00:53 |
Kurdistan | :) I need wifi for my laptop | 00:54 |
Sysi | there might be open driver now | 00:54 |
Sysi | i doubt a bit if half year is long time | 00:55 |
Kurdistan | sysi I think maverick, you can choose propiatary drivers during installation | 00:57 |
Kurdistan | thats good | 00:57 |
Kurdistan | many things will work out of box | 00:57 |
Kurdistan | like I said before I hope network applet will not be slove in maverick | 00:58 |
Kurdistan | dont remenber really but I think xubuntu use wicd? | 00:58 |
=== `mOOse` is now known as m00se | ||
charlie-tca | nope | 00:58 |
Kurdistan | wicd is slow | 00:59 |
charlie-tca | xubuntu uses whatever Ubuntu uses. That way, we don't have to have separate developers to maintain it | 00:59 |
Kurdistan | charlie-tca still, wicd is slow | 01:00 |
escape_code | Jumping in... I play with different types of Linux. The xfce desktop environment works for me quite well. The two workstation Linux versions I use predominantly are puppylinux and xubuntu. My opinion, puppylinux is great for it's size and intuitive "control panel" interface. People on the puppylinux sites also are extremely friendly and supportive. xubuntu is much more stable out of the box especially with installing applications. I give peo | 01:00 |
escape_code | queue the cricketts...chirp, chirp | 01:04 |
Kurdistan | charlie-tca I hope you understand me | 01:05 |
Kurdistan | good bye | 01:16 |
jrmy | ok whats the difference between a xfce session and a xubuntu session? | 01:19 |
jrmy | is one like fail safe mode? | 01:19 |
Sysi | nope | 01:19 |
jrmy | i read something about a classic xfce session | 01:20 |
jrmy | ive never tried xfce session | 01:20 |
jrmy | i thought it was just a fail safe mode | 01:21 |
jrmy | i think i'll log out and try it | 01:23 |
charlie-tca | One is really pretty and one is kind of ugly | 01:23 |
Hezy | I've been using Xfburn for a while now, and was very happy with it. However, I just found it fails to create an audio CD. Brasero fails too, so I installed Gnome Burner and it works fine. | 01:29 |
Hezy | anyone here had similar issues? | 01:29 |
jrmy | well xfce session is different | 01:32 |
jrmy | im thinking of trying lubuntu next | 01:32 |
kirill | hello | 01:32 |
kirill | may be somebody knew what is this - /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.32-21-generic/arch/x86/Makefile:81: stack protector enabled but no compiler support? | 01:33 |
jrmy | charlie-tca: did you just get kirill's Q? | 01:34 |
jrmy | i assume not since you left just after he asked | 01:35 |
kirill | there in xubuntu was absent build i install kernel headers | 01:35 |
kirill | then try to make and got alot of errors | 01:35 |
kirill | how i can install normal kernel to use command - make? | 01:36 |
charlie-tca | no, I got lost | 01:37 |
kirill | oh my problem cant be solved | 01:38 |
charlie-tca | I am sure it can be solved, but we might not know the answer right now | 01:38 |
kirill | all make tools is absent in xubuntu how i an see, but it all included in ubuntu, so i cant uderstand why xubuntu gods delete it from his system | 01:39 |
kirill | if u change windows why u delete another parts of system? | 01:40 |
charlie-tca | It takes resources to install all the stuff, when it is not needed by most people. However, if it is installed in Ubuntu, you can install it in Xubuntu | 01:40 |
charlie-tca | Why do we need all that stuff? We don't have openoffice installed either. | 01:40 |
kirill | but i cant uderstand how i can install it? | 01:40 |
kirill | i just need install drivers | 01:40 |
kirill | from viaarena | 01:40 |
kirill | for my video | 01:41 |
charlie-tca | You can open synaptic Package Manager and install everything listed, if you want. | 01:41 |
kirill | there only for nvidia ati | 01:41 |
kirill | openchrome very bad | 01:41 |
kirill | i have normal drivers from viaarena | 01:41 |
kirill | all ok on ubuntu | 01:41 |
kirill | but ubuntu very slov on my laptop | 01:41 |
kirill | i install xubuntu and cant install drivers | 01:42 |
kirill | cose buial was absent | 01:42 |
charlie-tca | Have you read this - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome | 01:42 |
kirill | i install kernel headers and got build but still got error when use - make | 01:42 |
charlie-tca | there is also google | 01:42 |
=== `mOOse` is now known as m00se | ||
kirill | there is normal drivers from via for ubuntu 10 | 01:43 |
charlie-tca | I think that is enough complaint about Xubuntu not doing what YOU want. Please google now for answers | 01:43 |
jrmy | i wonder if lubuntu is better for em | 01:44 |
jrmy | i really have no idea about lubuntu though | 01:44 |
charlie-tca | Lubuntu removes even more than Xubuntu | 01:44 |
jrmy | i see | 01:44 |
jrmy | im thinking my desktop might need lubuntu | 01:44 |
kirill | how i can install full ubuntu with xfce? | 01:45 |
charlie-tca | It might be. There is also puppy linux, that I hear is good | 01:45 |
charlie-tca | !ubuntu-desktop | 01:45 |
ubottu | k/ed/x/ubuntu-desktop is a metapackage. It depends upon other packages and brings them in; you can safely remove it, but it is recommended that you re-install it when upgrading. | 01:45 |
jrmy | yeah.. puppy loads into the ram or something liek that.. so its much faster | 01:45 |
Hezy | kirill: just install ubuntu and then install xubuntu-desktop | 01:45 |
charlie-tca | kirill: If you installed Xubuntu, you can install from a terminal - sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop | 01:46 |
kirill | hmm senk u i try | 01:46 |
charlie-tca | You are welcome | 01:46 |
kirill | bye | 01:46 |
jrmy | if he's talking about having both seperatly | 01:46 |
jrmy | separately* | 01:47 |
kirill | i need files from ubuntubut with xubuntu desktop | 01:47 |
charlie-tca | Puppy can be very fast, but may have limited functionality for people that need a GUI | 01:47 |
jrmy | bad for games then? | 01:47 |
Hezy | kirill, I used to have xubuntu on top of regular ubuntu. it works very well | 01:47 |
charlie-tca | kirill: then you do the command I gave you. You can then choose xubuntu or ubuntu desktop when starting | 01:48 |
jrmy | man.. my desktop is still installing xubuntu | 01:49 |
jrmy | its been like an hour | 01:49 |
jrmy | :/ | 01:49 |
charlie-tca | jrmy: you got kind of a slow machine there | 01:49 |
kirill | on my laptop ubuntu very slov | 01:49 |
jrmy | 900MHz processor, 256MB ram 4MB vram | 01:50 |
kirill | i dont need ubuntu i need files to install drivers | 01:50 |
charlie-tca | You still do not have the right to come in here and complain about the same thing when we try to help you | 01:50 |
jrmy | i am so mad i messed up my 32MB video card | 01:51 |
charlie-tca | I already told you , you will need to check on the chrome site to see what to do now. I also gave you a wiki page you can read that helps to install what you want. | 01:51 |
charlie-tca | jrmy: how? | 01:51 |
kirill | i try it now | 01:51 |
kirill | i read opencrome page and try | 01:52 |
jrmy | well when i originally installed it into the pci slot i didnt notice that the board was being slighty bent | 01:52 |
jrmy | eventually it came loose and i noticed a lack of color | 01:52 |
charlie-tca | ouch | 01:52 |
jrmy | yeah... | 01:52 |
jrmy | but oh well | 01:53 |
charlie-tca | hmm, well, 10.10 will no longer support the old nvidia 96 and 173 drivers, so ... | 01:54 |
kirill | yes i found and all ok senk u very mutch | 01:56 |
kirill | !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | 01:56 |
kirill | yes!!!!!!!! | 01:56 |
charlie-tca | You are welcome | 01:56 |
charlie-tca | Well, got that one fixed up afterall | 02:02 |
kirill | yes there was 500 frames in mesautils now 1300 | 02:05 |
kirill | senk u bye | 02:07 |
jrmy | grrr.. taking a long time still | 02:07 |
jrmy | maybe it'll be done next in the next hour lol | 02:07 |
jrmy | man.. still at 95% | 02:35 |
charlie-tca | still? not "already" ? | 02:35 |
jrmy | its been running dpkg for the past half hour | 02:37 |
jrmy | i think being in try before install causes it to be slower | 02:38 |
charlie-tca | It does, sometimes | 02:39 |
jrmy | i do remember this part taking awhile when i installed ubuntu last | 02:39 |
jrmy | well i'll be happy when it is over | 02:40 |
jrmy | its hard deciding on a specific distro | 02:42 |
jrmy | whooo hoo finally past that part | 02:42 |
jrmy | (the installation) | 02:42 |
jrmy | any idea what other distros are light like puppy, xubuntu and lubuntu? | 02:44 |
jrmy | also excluding dsl | 02:44 |
jrmy | and or including | 02:45 |
jrmy | and or run on older pc's | 02:46 |
charlie-tca | http://www.junauza.com/2009/07/5-fast-and-lightweight-linux-distros.html | 02:46 |
charlie-tca | Takes that page a long time to load | 02:46 |
jrmy | sorry im not thinking to much right now, kinda tired | 02:46 |
jrmy | heh | 02:46 |
jrmy | i do have cable | 02:48 |
jrmy | 6megs a sec | 02:48 |
charlie-tca | heh, lucky me. I have a whole 1.2mb/s | 02:53 |
charlie-tca | had 700 a few months ago, but when I moved... | 02:54 |
jrmy | is xubuntu suppose to be slow at first? | 02:58 |
charlie-tca | yes | 02:58 |
jrmy | just making sure | 02:58 |
charlie-tca | The first boot takes a few minutes. the next one is much faster | 02:58 |
jrmy | taking a while to load thats for sure | 02:59 |
jrmy | i assume it sets everything up | 03:00 |
jrmy | btw is there a shortcut key to make the applications menu pop up? | 03:01 |
jrmy | T_T now for updates.. i hate this part | 03:02 |
jrmy | i forgot that xchat came preinstalled with xubuntu, i liek that part | 03:03 |
knolls | I installed xubuntu-desktop on ubuntu-server and now when i reboot it doesn't open grub and goes straight to memtest86 | 03:28 |
charlie-tca | Okay, that's all from me for tonight. See you tomorrow - 10.10.10 | 03:42 |
jrmy | bye bye | 03:42 |
jrmy | would it update faster if i put it in tty mode? | 03:47 |
jrmy | or does a the GUI have to be displaying? | 03:48 |
jrmy | right now its installing, aka down downloading | 03:48 |
jrmy | ok im trying to use giolo to connect my computers but the ssh thing in gigolo isnt working | 05:44 |
jrmy | i installed ssh on both | 05:45 |
jrmy | one says failed to verify host key | 05:45 |
jrmy | or something | 05:45 |
jrmy | what am i doing wrong? | 05:45 |
jrmy | and the other can connect but i cant seem to access any folders | 05:46 |
moetunes | !ssh | 05:46 |
ubottu | SSH is the Secure SHell protocol, see: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSH for client usage. PuTTY is an SSH client for Windows; see: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ for it's homepage. See also !scp (Secure CoPy) and !sshd (Secure SHell Daemon) | 05:46 |
PhillyP | o/ | 05:47 |
jrmy | is there another way to connect | 05:55 |
jrmy | ? | 05:55 |
jrmy | even after trying something different it still isnt working | 05:55 |
moetunes | I just do in terminal ssh serverIP | 05:56 |
jrmy | oh | 05:56 |
jrmy | ok what does host key verification fail mean? | 05:57 |
jrmy | how do i fix this? | 05:57 |
moetunes | see: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSH | 05:58 |
moetunes | I don't use the key bit as ssh here is limited to the lan | 05:58 |
jrmy | maybe someone is accessing my files right now | 06:02 |
jrmy | i never set up a key | 06:02 |
jrmy | i did change the other computers os just a little while ago | 06:02 |
moetunes | the server might be set up to accept keys tho | 06:02 |
jrmy | but i dont know if that makes a difference | 06:02 |
jrmy | im about ready to say **** ssh | 06:03 |
jrmy | any other way to connect the 2 computers with xubuntu? | 06:03 |
moetunes | just go through the wiki | 06:03 |
jrmy | i dont have time for this | 06:03 |
moetunes | ssh is the best/easiest/safest way | 06:04 |
jrmy | if its that much of a problem i'll just transfer the file with my flash drive | 06:04 |
moetunes | you could use ftp to transfer files - or netcat | 06:04 |
jrmy | im already up an hour later then im suppose to | 06:04 |
moetunes | trying to learn a new process with a time limit is bound to cause stress | 06:05 |
jrmy | let me guess one computer has ssh the other has openssh-server | 06:10 |
jrmy | ? | 06:10 |
jrmy | yes? | 06:10 |
moetunes | yes - sshd it is called | 06:10 |
jrmy | so the one im connecting with i sudo apt-get install ssh, the one im connecting to sudo apt-get openssh-server | 06:11 |
jrmy | install* | 06:11 |
moetunes | yep | 06:11 |
moetunes | all ubuntus come with the ssh client as default afaik | 06:12 |
jrmy | you know what screw this | 06:16 |
jrmy | i cant figure it out | 06:16 |
jrmy | this is bs | 06:16 |
jrmy | ok i did it | 06:46 |
jrmy | took me long enough to figure it out | 06:46 |
jrmy | the stupid wiki didnt help | 06:46 |
jrmy | thank God for common sense | 06:47 |
moetunes | heh - common sense is all too rare tho... | 06:47 |
moetunes | well done jrmy | 06:47 |
jrmy | thanks | 06:48 |
jrmy | i suppose | 06:48 |
jrmy | sorry for whining | 06:48 |
jrmy | i usually do that before i figure it out | 06:48 |
jrmy | lol | 06:48 |
moetunes | it's fine - there is a learning process involved in using new apps - and it can be frustrating | 06:48 |
jrmy | yeah | 06:49 |
jrmy | i wonder if i should just use my desktop as a server | 06:51 |
jrmy | i dont even use it anymore really | 06:51 |
jrmy | though it has only a 20gb hdd | 06:51 |
moetunes | some folk do for nfs and ssh and others | 06:51 |
jrmy | kinda strange my cd burner hasnt figured out that i put a blank disc in it | 06:53 |
moetunes | nothing to read on the disk - if you mean in the file manager | 06:54 |
jrmy | unless its normal for it to keep spinning | 06:54 |
moetunes | prob not | 06:54 |
jrmy | seems to be burning no problem w/e | 06:55 |
moetunes | k | 06:55 |
jrmy | yep i gonna see what debian is like now | 06:55 |
jrmy | heck i could install a bunch of os' on the hdd | 06:56 |
moetunes | not with just 20gb | 06:56 |
jrmy | is it hard to remove them though? | 06:56 |
moetunes | just a reformat needed | 06:56 |
jrmy | k | 06:56 |
moetunes | and an update to grub | 06:57 |
jrmy | i thought grub2 worked out of the box | 06:57 |
moetunes | it does - but it needs updating if you change things natch | 06:57 |
jabo5360 | Good aftenoon all | 06:59 |
jabo5360 | can anyone help, after updating xubuntu this morning to 2.6.32.24 I have no GUI | 07:00 |
jabo5360 | except if I boot into the old 2.6.32.21 | 07:02 |
moetunes | do you get the login screen at all? | 07:03 |
jrmy | isnt a version that old no longer supported? | 07:03 |
moetunes | it's not really that old | 07:04 |
jrmy | well ok | 07:04 |
jrmy | i suppose im a pretty new user | 07:04 |
jabo5360 | no login screen just CL login | 07:04 |
moetunes | it wasn't the recovery option you selected by mistake? | 07:06 |
jabo5360 | no not at all | 07:06 |
jabo5360 | did try using the recovery option but to no avail though | 07:06 |
moetunes | k - next - are you using prorietry divers for the graphics? | 07:06 |
jabo5360 | yes the recommended Nvidia driver from the update manager | 07:07 |
jrmy | wait i have 2.6.32.25? | 07:07 |
jrmy | im confused | 07:07 |
jrmy | whats the 10.04 about then? | 07:07 |
jabo5360 | 10.04 is the release and the 2.6.32.24 is the kernel | 07:08 |
jrmy | ah.. kernel.. stuff i dont quite understand yet | 07:09 |
jrmy | 2.6.32.25 is grub2? | 07:09 |
jabo5360 | moetunes, should i perhaps disable the Nvidia driver? | 07:09 |
moetunes | jabo5360: it might not have built the module for the new kernel | 07:09 |
jrmy | grub is the kernel right? | 07:10 |
jabo5360 | no grub is the boot loader to choose which OS you want to boot into | 07:10 |
moetunes | jabo5360: if it was last boot that you tried the new kernel you could check /var/log/Xorg.1.log to see what happened | 07:10 |
* jrmy is so lost | 07:10 | |
moetunes | jrmy: grub lets you choose stuff at boot - the kernel is what interracts with the hardware | 07:11 |
jabo5360 | nothing there | 07:12 |
jabo5360 | gonna try disable Nvidia driver if no work I'll be back | 07:12 |
moetunes | jabo5360: you could boot into the new kernel - login and type startx to see errors | 07:13 |
jrmy | just a little late | 07:13 |
moetunes | a little... | 07:13 |
jrmy | well i thought debian would be a live cd | 07:16 |
jrmy | guess not | 07:16 |
jrmy | i dont know if i'll like it | 07:17 |
moetunes | debian is pretty basic that way - there is a live cd option I believe but it is not the standard debianoption | 07:17 |
jrmy | well i'll install it | 07:19 |
jrmy | if i dont like it i'll reformat | 07:19 |
moetunes | it's a little diff - it has a root user | 07:19 |
moetunes | as admin | 07:19 |
jrmy | well who knows if i'll like it | 07:21 |
moetunes | only 1 way to find out :] | 07:21 |
jrmy | so then how do i use the admin thing apposed to xubuntu? | 07:22 |
moetunes | most change to a tty with ctrl+alt+F2 and login as root and do admin stuff from the terminal there | 07:23 |
jrmy | so no sudo thing? | 07:23 |
moetunes | I'm sure it could be installed | 07:24 |
moetunes | but then it would need stting up I suppose | 07:24 |
moetunes | *setting | 07:24 |
jrmy | i wonder whats going on with jabo5360 | 07:25 |
moetunes | it's hard to see from here :] | 07:25 |
jrmy | heh | 07:25 |
moetunes | he'll come back if he needs to | 07:26 |
jrmy | i think i understand the root thing | 07:27 |
moetunes | it's not hard - but like all things it takes some practise | 07:28 |
jrmy | what i do like about debian at this point is selecting a mirror for files.. which i was able to choose MSU which is about 6 miles east of me | 07:38 |
jrmy | :] | 07:38 |
jrmy | but i dont know if it is for repository or for basic files | 07:38 |

mckillington_ | Can anybody answer a question I have? I'd like to change my Linux distribution from Ubuntu 10.04, to Xubuntu 10.04. Is there any particular way I should go about this? | 15:55 |
moetunes | !purexfce | 15:56 |
ubottu | If you want to remove all !KDE and !Gnome packages and have a default !Xubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce » | 15:56 |
knome | mckillington_, install the package 'xubuntu-desktop' and you're able to boot to 'xubuntu' | 15:56 |
knome | mckillington_, and after that, follow the procedure on the previous link if you want to remove all gnome packages for good | 15:56 |
knome | mckillington_, 'all gnome' == 'all ubuntu' :) | 15:57 |
mckillington_ | Thank you. Should I back up my files, first? | 15:57 |
knome | mckillington_, should not be any need for that. it's like installing any package. | 15:57 |
knome | mckillington_, of course, if you have something vital, it's always good to have a backup file | 15:57 |
mckillington_ | Right. I don't have anything important on this computer, it's more for convenience. | 15:58 |

boinkboink | in xubuntu 10.10, is there a way to increase the area over which the mouse cursor may capture an edge of window for resizing? it's kinda like trying to steer an ant by putting your finger in it's way for these shaky old hands, especially when trying to hook on to a corner which seems twice as hard. | 23:30 |
