Kurdistanhello :P00:37
charlie-tca!hi | Kurdistan00:37
ubottuKurdistan: Hi!, Welcome to #xubuntu! Feel free to ask questions and help people out. The channel guidelines are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines. Enjoy your stay!00:37
Kurdistancharlie-tca you seem to be :) real xubuntu friend00:39
charlie-tcaI try hard00:39
Kurdistanxubuntu is good. but light like lubuntu for old computers.00:39
Kurdistanbut if somebody like the apperence of xfce and likes the best buntu control center xubuntu is perfect00:40
charlie-tca:-)00:40
Kurdistan*not light like lubuntu00:40
charlie-tcalubuntu is about 30% lighter then Xubuntu, which is about 30% lighter than Ubuntu.00:41
Kurdistancharlie-tca you know which network manager xubuntu maverick will use?00:41
charlie-tcaSame as it has been00:41
Kurdistancharlie-tca according to distrowatch lubuntu is bigger then both xubuntu/kubuntu00:41
charlie-tcaLubuntu is new, it gets users trying it. Of course, you can not use it without adding a lot of applications, or so I have heard.00:42
Kurdistanwhat will be different from xubuntu lucid. not taking about kernel etc. more default apps and so on.00:43
charlie-tcahuh? lucid is 10.04, it is already out00:43
charlie-tcaDo you mean maverick?00:43
Kurdistancharlie-tca I mean if you compare defualt apps etc in lucid with maverick00:44
Kurdistanwhat have changed?00:44
Kurdistanwhat have gone and come00:44
Kurdistanreplaced00:44
Kurdistanetc00:44
charlie-tcaWe replaced brasero with xfburn, replaced Gnome-task-manager with xfce4-task-manager, replaced totem movie player with parole00:45
charlie-tcaupgraded xfce4 to 4.6.200:45
Kurdistanthats it?00:45
charlie-tcathat's a lot for just a couple of developers to do00:46
Kurdistan:) ok00:46
Kurdistanso upgrading xfce is no more bug-free?00:47
charlie-tcaFor me, it is bug free00:47
charlie-tcaI am running maverick00:47
Kurdistancharlie-tca be honest is it much better then xubuntu lucid?00:49
Kurdistanxubuntu was fast when I tried and liked the control center00:49
Kurdistanbut the network manager00:50
Sysilucid is LTS. recommendable00:50
Kurdistanapplet did come up late00:50
Kurdistaneverything in the desktop was running but network-applet did take alot more time00:50
charlie-tcaIf you are happy with 10.04, there is no reason to upgrade. Just install xfburn to replace brasero, if you want00:50
KurdistanI hope that bug is gone00:50
Sysipropiatary driver?00:50
jrmywhats the difference between lubuntu and xubuntu?00:51
Kurdistansysi you asked me?00:51
Sysiyes00:51
charlie-tcaThat's a good question, jrmy00:51
charlie-tcajrmy: lubuntu uses lxde and xubuntu uses Xfce00:51
Sysi!lxde | jrmy00:51
Sysiubottu occasionally sucks00:51
charlie-tcajrmy: Xubuntu is useable right after the installation, with good default applications ready for you00:52
Kurdistansysi yes I normally install nvidia closed drivers00:52
SysiKurdistan: i ment for wifi00:52
jrmylol00:53
Kurdistansysi I dont really remenber00:53
Kurdistanwas long time ago I tried xubuntu00:53
Kurdistanwould that make any difference?00:53
Sysiafaik that can't slow down nm-applet00:53
Kurdistan:) I need wifi for my laptop00:54
Sysithere might be open driver now00:54
Sysii doubt a bit if half year is long time00:55
Kurdistansysi I think maverick, you can choose propiatary drivers during installation00:57
Kurdistanthats good00:57
Kurdistanmany things will work out of box00:57
Kurdistanlike I said before I hope network applet will not be slove in maverick00:58
Kurdistandont remenber really but I think xubuntu use wicd?00:58
=== `mOOse` is now known as m00se
charlie-tcanope00:58
Kurdistanwicd is slow00:59
charlie-tcaxubuntu uses whatever Ubuntu uses. That way, we don't have to have separate developers to maintain it00:59
Kurdistancharlie-tca still, wicd is slow01:00
escape_codeJumping in...  I play with different types of Linux.  The xfce desktop environment works for me quite well.  The two workstation Linux versions I use predominantly are puppylinux and xubuntu.  My opinion, puppylinux is great for it's size and intuitive "control panel" interface.  People on the puppylinux sites also are extremely friendly and supportive.  xubuntu is much more stable out of the box especially with installing applications.  I give peo01:00
escape_codequeue the cricketts...chirp, chirp01:04
Kurdistancharlie-tca I hope you understand me01:05
Kurdistangood bye01:16
jrmyok whats the difference between a xfce session and a xubuntu session?01:19
jrmyis one like fail safe mode?01:19
Sysinope01:19
jrmyi read something about a classic xfce session01:20
jrmyive never tried xfce session01:20
jrmyi thought it was just a fail safe mode01:21
jrmyi think i'll log out and try it01:23
charlie-tcaOne is really pretty and one is kind of ugly01:23
HezyI've been using Xfburn for a while now, and was very happy with it. However, I just found it fails to create an audio CD. Brasero fails too, so I installed Gnome Burner and it works fine.01:29
Hezyanyone here had similar issues?01:29
jrmywell xfce session is different01:32
jrmyim thinking of trying lubuntu next01:32
kirillhello01:32
kirillmay be somebody knew what is this - /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.32-21-generic/arch/x86/Makefile:81: stack protector enabled but no compiler support?01:33
jrmycharlie-tca: did you just get kirill's Q?01:34
jrmyi assume not since you left just after he asked01:35
kirillthere in xubuntu was absent build i install kernel headers01:35
kirillthen try to make and got alot of errors01:35
kirillhow i can install normal kernel to use command - make?01:36
charlie-tcano, I got lost01:37
kirilloh my problem cant be solved01:38
charlie-tcaI am sure it can be solved, but we might not know the answer right now01:38
kirillall make tools is absent in xubuntu how i an see, but it all included in ubuntu, so i cant uderstand why xubuntu gods delete it from his system01:39
kirillif u change windows why u delete another parts of system?01:40
charlie-tcaIt takes resources to install all the stuff, when it is not needed by most people. However, if it is installed in Ubuntu, you can install it in Xubuntu01:40
charlie-tcaWhy do we need all that stuff? We don't have openoffice installed either.01:40
kirillbut i cant uderstand how i can install it?01:40
kirilli just need install drivers01:40
kirillfrom viaarena01:40
kirillfor my video01:41
charlie-tcaYou can open synaptic Package Manager and install everything listed, if you want.01:41
kirillthere only for nvidia ati01:41
kirillopenchrome very bad01:41
kirilli have normal drivers from viaarena01:41
kirillall ok on ubuntu01:41
kirillbut ubuntu very slov on my laptop01:41
kirilli install xubuntu and cant install drivers01:42
kirillcose buial was absent01:42
charlie-tcaHave you read this - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome01:42
kirilli install kernel headers and got build but still got error when use - make01:42
charlie-tcathere is also google01:42
=== `mOOse` is now known as m00se
kirillthere is normal drivers from via for ubuntu 1001:43
charlie-tcaI think that is enough complaint about Xubuntu not doing what YOU want. Please google now for answers01:43
jrmyi wonder if lubuntu is better for em01:44
jrmyi really have no idea about lubuntu though01:44
charlie-tcaLubuntu removes even more than Xubuntu01:44
jrmyi see01:44
jrmyim thinking my desktop might need lubuntu01:44
kirillhow i can install full ubuntu with xfce?01:45
charlie-tcaIt might be. There is also puppy linux, that I hear is good01:45
charlie-tca!ubuntu-desktop01:45
ubottuk/ed/x/ubuntu-desktop is a metapackage. It depends upon other packages and brings them in; you can safely remove it, but it is recommended that you re-install it when upgrading.01:45
jrmyyeah.. puppy loads into the ram or something liek that.. so its much faster01:45
Hezykirill: just install ubuntu and then install xubuntu-desktop01:45
charlie-tcakirill: If you installed Xubuntu, you can install from a terminal - sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop01:46
kirillhmm senk u i try01:46
charlie-tcaYou are welcome01:46
kirillbye01:46
jrmyif he's talking about having both seperatly01:46
jrmyseparately*01:47
kirilli need files from ubuntubut with xubuntu desktop01:47
charlie-tcaPuppy can be very fast, but may have limited functionality for people that need a GUI01:47
jrmybad for games then?01:47
Hezykirill, I used to have xubuntu on top of regular ubuntu. it works very well01:47
charlie-tcakirill: then you do the command I gave you. You can then choose xubuntu or ubuntu desktop when starting01:48
jrmyman.. my desktop is still installing xubuntu01:49
jrmyits been like an hour01:49
jrmy:/01:49
charlie-tcajrmy: you got kind of a slow machine there01:49
kirillon my laptop ubuntu very slov01:49
jrmy900MHz processor, 256MB ram 4MB vram01:50
kirilli dont need ubuntu i  need files to install drivers01:50
charlie-tcaYou still do not have the right to come in here and complain about the same thing when we try to help you01:50
jrmyi am so mad i messed up my 32MB video card01:51
charlie-tcaI already told you , you will need to check on the chrome site to see what to do now. I also gave you a wiki page you can read that helps to install what you want.01:51
charlie-tcajrmy: how?01:51
kirilli try it now01:51
kirilli read opencrome page and try01:52
jrmywell when i originally installed it into the pci slot i didnt notice that the board was being slighty bent01:52
jrmyeventually it came loose and i noticed a lack of color01:52
charlie-tcaouch01:52
jrmyyeah...01:52
jrmybut oh well01:53
charlie-tcahmm, well, 10.10 will no longer support the old nvidia 96 and 173 drivers, so ...01:54
kirillyes i found and all ok senk u very mutch01:56
kirill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!01:56
kirillyes!!!!!!!!01:56
charlie-tcaYou are welcome01:56
charlie-tcaWell, got that one fixed up afterall02:02
kirillyes there was 500 frames in mesautils now 130002:05
kirillsenk u bye02:07
jrmygrrr.. taking a long time still02:07
jrmymaybe it'll be done next in the next hour lol02:07
jrmyman.. still at 95%02:35
charlie-tcastill? not "already" ?02:35
jrmyits been running dpkg for the past half hour02:37
jrmyi think being in try before install causes it to be slower02:38
charlie-tcaIt does, sometimes02:39
jrmyi do remember this part taking awhile when i installed ubuntu last02:39
jrmywell i'll be happy when it is over02:40
jrmyits hard deciding on a specific distro02:42
jrmywhooo hoo finally past that part02:42
jrmy(the installation)02:42
jrmyany idea what other distros are light like puppy, xubuntu and lubuntu?02:44
jrmyalso excluding dsl02:44
jrmyand or including02:45
jrmyand or run on older pc's02:46
charlie-tcahttp://www.junauza.com/2009/07/5-fast-and-lightweight-linux-distros.html02:46

jrmyis xubuntu suppose to be slow at first?02:58
charlie-tcayes02:58
jrmyjust making sure02:58
charlie-tcaThe first boot takes a few minutes. the next one is much faster02:58
jrmytaking a while to load thats for sure02:59
jrmyi assume it sets everything up03:00
jrmybtw is there a shortcut key to make the applications menu pop up?03:01
jrmyT_T now for updates.. i hate this part03:02
jrmyi forgot that xchat came preinstalled with xubuntu, i liek that part03:03
knollsI installed xubuntu-desktop on ubuntu-server and now when i reboot it doesn't open grub and goes straight to memtest8603:28
charlie-tcaOkay, that's all from me for tonight. See you tomorrow - 10.10.1003:42
jrmybye bye03:42
jrmywould it update faster if i put it in tty mode?03:47
jrmyor does a the GUI have to be displaying?03:48
jrmyright now its installing, aka down downloading03:48
jrmyok im trying to use giolo to connect my computers but the ssh thing in gigolo isnt working05:44

moetunesI don't use the key bit as ssh here is limited to the lan05:58
jrmymaybe someone is accessing my files right now06:02
jrmyi never set up a key06:02
jrmyi did change the other computers os just a little while ago06:02
moetunesthe server might be set up to accept keys tho06:02

jrmyany other way to connect the 2 computers with xubuntu?06:03
moetunesjust go through the wiki06:03
jrmyi dont have time for this06:03
moetunesssh is the best/easiest/safest way06:04
jrmyif its that much of a problem i'll just transfer the file with my flash drive06:04
moetunesyou could use ftp to transfer files - or netcat06:04
jrmyim already up an hour later then im suppose to06:04
moetunestrying to learn a new process with a time limit is bound to cause stress06:05
jrmylet me guess one computer has ssh the other has openssh-server06:10
jrmy?06:10
jrmyyes?06:10
moetunesyes - sshd it is called06:10

jrmythis is bs06:16
jrmyok i did it06:46
jrmytook me long enough to figure it out06:46
jrmythe stupid wiki didnt help06:46
jrmythank God for common sense06:47
moetunesheh - common sense is all too rare tho...06:47
moetuneswell done jrmy06:47
jrmythanks06:48
jrmyi suppose06:48
jrmysorry for whining06:48
jrmyi usually do that before i figure it out06:48
jrmylol06:48
moetunesit's fine - there is a learning process involved in using new apps - and it can be frustrating06:48
jrmyyeah06:49
jrmyi wonder if i should just use my desktop as a server06:51
jrmyi dont even use it anymore really06:51
jrmythough it has only a 20gb hdd06:51
moetunessome folk do for nfs and ssh and others06:51
jrmykinda strange my cd burner hasnt figured out that i put a blank disc in it06:53
moetunesnothing to read on the disk - if you mean in the file manager06:54
jrmyunless its normal for it to keep spinning06:54
moetunesprob not06:54
jrmyseems to be burning no problem w/e06:55
moetunesk06:55
jrmyyep i gonna see what debian is like now06:55
jrmyheck i could install a bunch of os' on the hdd06:56
moetunesnot with just 20gb06:56
jrmyis it hard to remove them though?06:56
moetunesjust a reformat needed06:56
jrmyk06:56
moetunesand an update to grub06:57
jrmyi thought grub2 worked out of the box06:57
moetunesit does - but it needs updating if you change things natch06:57
jabo5360Good aftenoon all06:59
jabo5360can anyone help, after updating xubuntu this morning to 2.6.32.24 I have no GUI07:00
jabo5360except if I boot into the old 2.6.32.2107:02
moetunesdo you get the login screen at all?07:03
jrmyisnt a version that old no longer supported?07:03
moetunesit's not really that old07:04
jrmywell ok07:04
jrmyi suppose im a pretty new user07:04
jabo5360no login screen just CL login07:04
moetunesit wasn't the recovery option you selected by mistake?07:06
jabo5360no not at all07:06
jabo5360did try using the recovery option but to no avail though07:06
moetunesk - next - are you using prorietry divers for the graphics?07:06
jabo5360yes the recommended Nvidia driver from the update manager07:07
jrmywait i have 2.6.32.25?07:07
jrmyim confused07:07
jrmywhats the 10.04 about then?07:07
jabo536010.04 is the release and the 2.6.32.24 is the kernel07:08
jrmyah.. kernel.. stuff i dont quite understand yet07:09
jrmy2.6.32.25 is grub2?07:09
jabo5360moetunes, should i perhaps disable the Nvidia driver?07:09
moetunesjabo5360:  it might not have built the module for the new kernel07:09
jrmygrub is the kernel right?07:10
jabo5360no grub is the boot loader to choose which OS you want to boot into07:10
moetunesjabo5360:  if it was last boot that you tried the new kernel you could check /var/log/Xorg.1.log  to see what happened07:10
* jrmy is so lost07:10
moetunesjrmy:  grub lets you choose stuff at boot - the kernel is what interracts with the hardware07:11
jabo5360nothing there07:12
jabo5360gonna try disable Nvidia driver if no work I'll be back07:12
moetunesjabo5360:  you could boot into the new kernel - login and type   startx   to see errors07:13
jrmyjust a little late07:13
moetunesa little...07:13
jrmywell i thought debian would be a live cd07:16
jrmyguess not07:16
jrmyi dont know if i'll like it07:17
moetunesdebian is pretty basic that way - there is a live cd option I believe but it is not the standard debianoption07:17
jrmywell i'll install it07:19
jrmyif i dont like it i'll reformat07:19
moetunesit's a little diff - it has a root user07:19
moetunesas admin07:19
jrmywell who knows if i'll like it07:21
moetunesonly 1 way to find out :]07:21
jrmyso then how do i use the admin thing apposed to xubuntu?07:22
moetunesmost change to a tty with ctrl+alt+F2 and login as root and do admin stuff from the terminal there07:23
jrmyso no sudo thing?07:23
moetunesI'm sure it could be installed07:24
moetunesbut then it would need stting up I suppose07:24
moetunes*setting07:24
jrmyi wonder whats going on with jabo536007:25
moetunesit's hard to see from here :]07:25
jrmyheh07:25
moetuneshe'll come back if he needs to07:26
jrmyi think i understand the root thing07:27
moetunesit's not hard - but like all things it takes some practise07:28
jrmywhat i do like about debian at this point is selecting a mirror for files.. which i was able to choose MSU which is about 6 miles east of me07:38
jrmy:]07:38
jrmybut i dont know if it is for repository or for basic files07:38
moetunesI don't know about the debian repos at all07:39
jrmymayhap i find out07:40
jrmylol @ my old english.. i dont even know if i used that word correctly07:41
moetunesI'm sure you will if it is installing07:41
jrmyindubitably07:41
moetunesheh07:41
jrmylol that word is awesome07:41
jrmyi had to use a spell checker however07:41
moetunesit's fun to say :]07:41
jrmyyep07:42
hydroziihello does anybody know why my banshee media player is closing as soon as i open it suddenly?07:54

hydroziinow i try it and it works08:05
moetunesI'm old school and use xmms - not in the repos08:06
hydroziidoes it sort your music and rename it with the right names for you?08:06

mckillington_Hello.15:54
mckillington_Can anybody answer a question I have? I'd like to change my Linux distribution from Ubuntu 10.04, to Xubuntu 10.04. Is there any particular way I should go about this?15:55
moetunes!purexfce15:56
ubottuIf you want to remove all !KDE and !Gnome packages and have a default !Xubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce »15:56
knomemckillington_, install the package 'xubuntu-desktop' and you're able to boot to 'xubuntu'15:56
knomemckillington_, and after that, follow the procedure on the previous link if you want to remove all gnome packages for good15:56
knomemckillington_, 'all gnome' == 'all ubuntu' :)15:57
mckillington_Thank you. Should I back up my files, first?15:57
knomemckillington_, should not be any need for that. it's like installing any package.15:57
knomemckillington_, of course, if you have something vital, it's always good to have a backup file15:57
mckillington_Right. I don't have anything important on this computer, it's more for convenience.15:58
mckillington_Thank you for the advice :)15:58

Aquina'lo17:47
=== MaverickOne is now known as IdleOne
AquinaI'm referring to http://pastebin.com/n9bkjfJc and let you know my employee allowed me to host something and also put in a server into the employee-rack (just for me/us) which is awsome. UNFORTUNATELY they only allow to use theses systems for OURSELVES (compile, host, do wahtever we want to) for security and economic reasons. Thus hosting Xubuntu to the public is not allowed. :-( I'm sorry.. I tried hard!18:00

vinnl:)21:44
kaolbrecmark76, I did not, but then I didn't upgrade. I clean installed.21:46

boinkboinkin xubuntu 10.10, is there a way to increase the area over which the mouse cursor may capture an edge of window for resizing? it's kinda like trying to steer an ant by putting your finger in it's way for these shaky old hands, especially when trying to hook on to a corner which seems twice as hard.23:30
boinkboink:)23:30
mark76There used to be resize grips23:50
