kaolbrecOh darn. I was about to reply with "right click on the title bar and choose resize"00:11
kaolbrecBut he's gone00:11
dixonQuick question. I was reading that 10.10 removes Brasero and junk and replaces it with Xfburn (which I already use) but when trying to do the network upgrade it still wants to re-install Brasero so that seems a bit odd.01:35
dixonIs there a listing of the Xubuntu-specific mirrors or something I can check my software sources against?01:36
kalle_why is there no network places or any network browser in xubuntu ?02:45
kalle_i cant find any kind of network browser at all02:45
jrmyits called firefox02:48
jrmyit is found in the quick launch which is red and blue and is right next to places02:48
jrmyon the top panel02:48
jrmyoh, network02:49
jrmygigolo02:49
jrmylol02:49
jrmythats found in applications> system> gigolo02:49
jrmyhowever you kinda have to configure it first02:49
jrmyeh, im kinda new anyways02:51
kalle_hm can it browse netware shares02:51
jrmybut since no one else seems to be around02:51
jrmynot sure.. im nt to familiar with networking on linux02:51
jrmynot*02:51
jrmyive only recently connected to another computer02:51
jrmybut gigolo lets you look at files on a computer02:53
jrmyand other stuff02:53
jrmybut ive only really had experience with windows02:53
kalle_hm02:54
kalle_only way i found so far is to manually mount netshares to a local folder02:54
kalle_kinda user unfriendly02:55
jrmy!ssh02:55
ubottuSSH is the Secure SHell protocol, see: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSH for client usage. PuTTY is an SSH client for Windows; see: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ for it's homepage. See also !scp (Secure CoPy) and !sshd (Secure SHell Daemon)02:55
kalle_there used to be a places > network that was kinda neat then the developers in their wisdom desided nobody uses network anymore02:55
jrmythis is the only way ive used it so far02:55
moetunesin the file manager thunar type in the path bar   smb://IPaddress   where ip address is the ip of the comp you want to connect to02:56
jrmywell i know i would of liked it :]02:56
kalle_hm oh well, looks like its boned anyway , after 30 mins uptime the novell server just keeps rebooting, i guess the drive is toast anyway ;(02:56
kalle_so much for saving that data02:56
kalle_no way to access a netware partition locally i guess ?02:56
moetunes!netware02:58
moetunes!info netware02:58
ubottuPackage netware does not exist in lucid02:58
jrmywell thats fail imo02:59
kalle_there is a package called ncpfs that has something to do with netware but i found no way to start it02:59
kalle_!ncpfs02:59
kalle_yeah who needs network or servers anyway...02:59
moetunes!info ncpfs03:00

kalle_hm im not sure03:01
kalle_maybe the one before that03:01
jrmyi forget how to check03:01
moetunesthat's lucid :]03:01
moetuneslsb_release03:01
moetunesiirc03:01
kalle_is 10.10 out or beta ?03:01
jrmyi just might upgrade.. idk03:02
jrmymy 10.04 version is modified anyways03:02
moetunes10.10 is out :]03:03
moetunesbut 10.04 is a lts03:03
jrmyi kinda like how 10.04 is darker03:03
moetunes!lts03:03
ubottuLTS means Long Term Support. LTS versions of Ubuntu will be supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server. The current LTS version of Ubuntu is !Lucid (Lucid Lynx 10.04)03:03
jrmy!maverick03:04
ubottuUbuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) is the current release of Ubuntu. Download http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.10/ - Release Info: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/101003:04
kalle_nice how it still says welcome to 9.1 after i upgrade to the latest version03:05
kalle_i guess linux will never be finished, then again what is these days03:05
moetunes!version03:06
ubottuTo find out what version of Ubuntu you have, type « lsb_release -a » in a !shell - To know the available version of a package, « apt-cache policy <package> »03:06
kalle_most things are barely usable by the time support is cut coz its ancient history03:06
jrmynope not the right address03:06
moetunesjrmy:  which one?03:06
kalle_it says 10.04.103:07
jrmyso i can get an upgrade of xubuntu to 10.1003:07
kalle_sure its not a beta ? my update manager says i have all the latest updates03:08
jrmyis it suppose to say ubuntu 10.04 or xubuntu 10.04 after putting in said lsb_release -a command?03:09
moetunesjrmy:  I think just 10.01\4.103:09
moetunesjrmy:  I think just 10.04.103:09
moetunesthey use the same base - it is just the desktop environment that is diff03:10
jrmywell it says http://paste2.org/p/103075103:10
jrmyyeah still getting the hang of xubuntu/ubuntu03:11
moetunesthat looks fine - it won't mention the desktop you use03:11
jrmyok03:11
moetunesthere's http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/10.10/release03:14
jrmyis it possible to downgrade?03:15
jrmyi found it, but thanks03:16
jrmyits ironic that google.com/linux doesnt show up linux stuff as well03:16
jrmylike if i type in "xubuntu" none of the results on the first page are the website03:17
moetunesyou can't really downgrade at all - only way I know is to install older version03:17
moetunesI just click the link in the topic here03:17
moetunesto get to xubuntus' website03:18
jrmyi see03:18
jrmyi know that it is xubuntu.org03:19
jrmyso LTS are every .04 release?03:19
moetunesthe website isn't really a howto forum or anything so it prob is low on the search hits meter03:20
jrmypossibly03:20
moetunesnope every couple of years iirc - last was 8.04 I think03:21
moetunes!release03:21
ubottuUbuntu releases a new version every 6 months. Each version is supported for 18 months to 5 years. More info at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases & http://wiki.ubuntu.com/TimeBasedReleases03:21
jrmywell im upgrading03:21
moetunesluck :]03:21
jrmyyep03:21
jrmyshould i stop my music player and close out stuff btw?03:22
moetunesno it should be fine to continue as normal03:22
jrmyok03:23
jrmythen i'll pretty much be here till i need to reboot03:23
moetunesin #ubuntu and #kubuntu there are a few ppl having some issues after the upgrade03:24
jrmythat sucks03:24
moetunessome of 'em aren't too pleased03:25
jrmyi pretty much have all my files backed up either way03:25
jrmyyeah i wouldnt be either03:25
moetunessomeone that does backups - you're rare it seems  :]03:25
=== Cityscape is now known as Maxx55
=== Maxx55 is now known as register
jrmyheh03:27
=== register is now known as Cityscape
jrmyyeah especially if its stuff like music ive written03:27
jrmyso what kind of issues have been happening?03:29
moetunesdiff ones for diff folks - graphics, sound, wifi etc03:29
jrmyyeah those blow03:30
jrmythough ive only had an issue because of bad memory03:30
CityscapeCan anyone help me with damn small linux?x03:31
jrmyit was weird when i installed wine on my desktop with ubuntu 10.04 and it changed the language to hebrew03:31
jrmymaybe in a different channel03:31
jrmythis is the xubuntu support channel03:31
moetunesCityscape:  you can check for a dsl channel with   /msg alis list *dsl*03:32
jrmythere is03:32
jrmyi just check03:32
jrmyed03:32
moetuneswhat was the channel called?03:32
jrmy#dsl is damn small linux03:32
jrmyand or #damnsmalllinux03:33
jrmyboth work apparently03:33
Cityscape#damnsmalllinux is inactive as are all DSL channels that i could find.03:34
CityscapeAll i want is to cange my default monitor resolution. :(03:34
jrmythat can be a problem03:34
moetunesdoes dsl have a X log?03:35
royalkisnt there an x11 config file?03:35
CityscapeYah, DSL has X.03:35
moetunesdoes dsl have a X log?03:36
royalkthere is an X11 config file that specifies the resolution03:36
jrmyis there a way to change to a mirror closer to my location when downloading updates and upgrades by any chance?03:36
jrmysay for instance maybe MSU which is 6 miles or so east of me03:36
moetunessome mirrors have limited bandwidth - distance isn't the best guide03:37
jrmybecause it is really lame that i can only download stuff at 200KB/s03:37
jrmywaiting an hour for 600MB isnt my idea of fun03:38
happyfac1I'm not getting sound on a fresh 10.10 xubuntu install, but I have on almost every other ubuntu install03:38
happyfac1any help?03:38
Cityscapebut I need to know how to change the default resolution. http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/Vga%3Dxxx looked usful but I think it's only for booting from USB or CDROM. I have DSL installed on my hard drive.03:38
moetuneswith a new release all servers are going to be way busy03:38
moetuneshappyfac1:  looked at   alsamixer   in terminal?03:39
jrmyCityscape: i believe you might be correct03:39
Cityscapejrmy: i'm downloding the xubuntu ISO and it been going 2 hours and it only half way.03:39
happyfac1moetunes: "error opening terminal: unknown" when trying to open alsamixer03:39
royalk City, that is the res for the screen buffer, that's a kernel arg, are you trying to change text res or X?03:40
Cityscapejrmy: correct about which?03:40
jrmyi remember about one of the light weight distros not being made for hdd installation03:40
Cityscapejrmy: that might be DSL then.03:40
moetuneshappyfac1:  edit your .bashrc file and add the line   export TERM=xterm   then logout/login03:40
jrmyin theory03:41
jrmyim not completely certain03:41
moetunesdsl works fine from hdd03:42
moetunesit has forums on it03:42
moetunes*on doing it03:42
Cityscaperoyalk: all I want is to change the default boot resolution for DSL. right stuff doesn't look quite right on boot.03:42
moetunesCityscape:  you need to find out why it doesn't do the right res - the X log will tell - it might be the best the driver can do03:43
happyfac1moetunes: I've unmuted everything and nothing03:44
Cityscapemoetunes: I'm guessing that it's running at too high of a res. I running a intel 486 with a 1 MB graphics card.03:45
jrmywell moetunes lets hope i dont have a problem with 10.10 as well03:45
moetunesCityscape:  noone in here will know what driver dsl has for that03:45
royalkyou can set that vga arg in grub i believe03:45
royalkon that link you sent03:46
moetuneshappyfac1:  in terminal  cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp   - watch out it is loud - ctrl+c to stop it03:46
jrmyi havent tried dsl yet.. just might burn myself a copy03:46
moetuneshappyfac1:  ant noise?03:46
jrmyi think i like puppy should put that on cd too03:47
moetunesjrmy:  I wouldn't bother - it uses old kernel and horrible packaging03:47
happyfac1moetunes: no sir03:47
moetuneshappyfac1:  no errors mentioned?03:47
jrmymoetunes: i'll be using a cd-rw no biggy03:47
happyfac1moetunes: no, it ran03:47
Cityscapejrmy: it's good for old computer like my 486 but on a Pentium 3 or higher machine I would never use it as a main distro.03:48
kanigit#gentoo03:48
moetuneshappyfac1:  in terminal do   lsmod | grep snd   how many lines do you get?03:48
jrmymy computer is pretty slow as well03:48
happyfac1moetunes: 1303:48
moetunescool03:48
jrmyso im interested in these light weight distro's03:49
jrmyhowever i think im set with xubuntu03:49
CityscapeWhat new features does Xubuntu 10.10 have?03:50
Cityscapejrmy: what are your computer's specs?03:50
moetuneshappyfac1:  what does   aplay -l   return03:50
happyfac1moetunes: two playback devices on card 003:51
Cityscapejrmy: DSL is really light. It only requires a 486 with 16 MB RAM.03:51
jrmyp3 @ 1.2GHz 256+128MB mem 8MB graphics03:51
moetuneshappyfac1:  and the card name?03:51

happyfac1moetunes: which works on ubuntu03:52
moetuneshappyfac1:  ubuntu 10.10?03:52
Cityscapejrmy: similar to mine, I have a 750 Mhz AMD processor, 1 GB RAM and 8 MB graphics.03:52
jrmyCityscape: what is a 486 anyways?03:52
happyfac1moetunes: I'm not sure, but 8.04, 8.10, 9.04, 9.1003:52
moetuneshappyfac1:  can you paste what    lsmod | grep snd   returned?03:53

Cityscapejrmy: if your interested in lightweight distro's...have you tried Lubuntu?03:55
jrmyim attached to the software center with ubuntu and xubuntu so i didnt like lubuntu03:55
jrmyheh03:56
jrmythe software center does have just about everything03:56
jrmyafaik03:56
moetuneshappyfac1:  that looks fine - with /dev/dsp working but not outputting anything I need to ask you to check the connectors and that whatever you are running sound through is turned on pls03:58

happyfac1i'm dling ubuntu 10.10 at 1.5 MB/s on torrents now :D04:28
jrmywhich is 750KB/s expected and in the 800's to 900's on average04:28
moetunesI'm suprised you got that speed with so many wanting 10.1004:28
happyfac1there's only 127 seeds and 134 leechers04:29
jrmywell its mostly upgrades with stuff i already had04:29
jrmywith 10.04 i was hitting around 2MB/s :D04:29
happyfac1moetunes: isn't the joy of bittorrent the more people dling the faster your speeds?04:30
jrmybasically04:30
moetunesit should be04:30
jrmymore sources = faster speeds04:30
jrmywel potentially04:30

happyfac1moetunes: I'm seeing if ubuntu 10.10 has the same sound issue04:31
* jrmy frowns upon that04:31
moetuneshappyfac1:  it will either be something with the xfce sound app or the driver - if it is the driver ubuntu will have the same issue so good luck :]04:32
moetunesI hope it isn't the driver...04:32
happyfac1moetunes: first linux install on this old machine that had sound issues, so probably xfce04:33
jrmyxfce = <304:34

CityscapeHello again04:37
CityscapeI just started downloading the Xubuntu 10.10 torrent to the same folder  as my previous download of Xubuntu 10.10 that did not complete. That torrent is now picking up from where my browser left off. Is this good or should I delete my old iso and start downloading from the beginning?04:39
jrmyso yeah you were the first person i helped with a linux issu04:39

jrmywell i think i'm off to bed05:22
churlHello, I'm running Xubuntu and I purged gnome-power-manager and now my battery won't charge.  Was hoping that xfce4-power-manager would work.  Also reinstalled gnome-power-manager and it still will not charge.05:30
moetuneschurl:  the power managemaent daemon prob isn't running - have you rebooted?05:32
moetunesI don't know what it is called to restart it05:32
churlmoetunes: no, i got scared with the charge running out and jumped into the chat room first.  should i try getting rid of gnome-power-manager again and restart?05:34
moetuneschurl:  worth a shot05:34
kalle_is there an easy way to interface a ups ? it has a low battery signal that should trigger shutdown of servers05:34
kalle_so hook it to a serial port and have a chron job poll it every second ?05:35
moetunesI don't know about ups's - lets have a google :]05:36
churlill bee back soon05:36
kalle_theyre battery powered power plants that take over when the mains fail05:36
kalle_and if it stays down for hours the batteries will run down and hopefully the servers shut down safely before they totally die05:37
moetuneshttp://tldp.org/HOWTO/UPS-HOWTO/05:37
moetunesI like archwiki - http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/APC_UPS05:38
churlmoetunes: ok i purged a power-manager and for the first time ever my ac some how came unplugged ......05:39
moetunesoops ?05:39
kalle_hm not much info there, a list of obsolete ups daemons05:40
churlno idea05:40
churlthanks :)05:40
kalle_all of them probably expecting commands from the ups05:40
moetunesthe archwiki one is newish05:40
kalle_my ups is an ancient powerhouse probably 50 kilos atleast with some heavy dutu stuff05:40
kalle_way before usb and even before serial interfaces where common05:41
kalle_but it does have a signal when battery is low05:41
kalle_so im thinking of hardwire that to a serial port to make it change state and all servers should sense that and shutdown05:41
kalle_i ran some new cheapo ups here for about 2 hours but by them the transformer was dangerously hot so i fear it would overheat before the battery, for sure it will with 2-3 servers running05:43
moetunes"The main advantage of using an APC UPS (for me) is that it can communicate with your Linux box through either a RS-232 or USB serial connection. In the event of a prolonged power outage, should the APC UPS lose most of its battery capacity, it can tell the Linux box to perform a safe shutdown."05:43
kalle_and it can send that to 3 servers ?05:43
kalle_i doubt it05:43
moetunesdepends on the number of connections it has I suppose05:44
kalle_most are designe to power only one computer05:44
kalle_not sure how well they like to be wired in paralell05:44
kalle_serial ports maybe can be wired but i doubt usb ones will work05:45
kalle_anyway this old crate has none of that anyway05:45
moetunesheh05:45
kalle_vonder if a 1 sec polling will put a lot of cpu load ?05:46
kalle_howto poll the state of a serial port ?05:47
moetunesI shouldn't think so05:47
moetunesthings like conky that monitor heaps of stuff don't use much cpu05:47
kalle_yeah i guess05:47
kalle_and it only need to detect one bit of a serial port then shutdown05:48
happyfac1moetunes: forgot to tell you that sound works fine in ubuntu 10.1005:48
kalle_also i want to use a serial port to control another server, it should sync once a week and otherwise stay off05:49
moetuneshappyfac1:  it would be helpful to file a bug then05:49
kalle_so i guess i need one pin to jazz up the power supply and another pin to force shutdown for it05:49
happyfac1moetunes: I already replaced the installation, would it still be useful?05:49
moetuneshappyfac1:  maybe not now :]05:50
happyfac1yeah :S I can always use the live cd though05:50

moetunesk13:14
Steristbut people using Gnome still have hibernate... so i came here13:14
moetunesthe option is not in 10.10s' version of xfce413:15
Steristfor unknown reasons ...?13:15

DoctorPepperHas anyone reported any issues with the x86 alternate ISO image?14:47
moetunesnot in here that I've seen...14:52
DoctorPepperOk.  I've downloaded it twice (checked the md5 sum both times), burned it to three CD-R's, and all of them report corrupted packages during install14:53
jrmygreat i upgrade and now x wont boot14:53
jrmyhi charlie-tca14:54
jrmymorning everyone14:54
charlie-tcaHello, jrmy14:54
moetunesDoctorPepper:  did the iso pass the md5 before you burned it?14:55
jrmywanna try and help me get x to load?14:55
DoctorPepperYes14:55
DoctorPeppermoetunes: yes14:55
DoctorPepperjrmy: what graphics card do you have?14:56
moetunesDoctorPepper:  and the burnt cd passed the check too?14:56
DoctorPepperI'll have to test that.  I just reinstalled 10.0414:56
DoctorPepperThis is my OpenBSD box I keep for testing14:56
moetunescould be a failing burner...14:56
DoctorPepperIt could14:57
DoctorPepperLet me quickly (well, within reason) grab the md5 sum off of the CD14:57
jrmywhat my problem is, i boot normally and i havent even booted into 10.10 yet as in i just upgraded from 10.04 it shows a list of things real quick which i think is the stuff about battery and sound and what not and the screen goes black and there is no hard drive function at that point14:57
moetunesjrmy:  does the recovery option boot?14:58
jrmyif i go into the grub menu i can start with recovery mode and it only lets me enter into tty14:58
* jrmy doesnt know how recovery mode works14:59
moetunesjrmy:  that's good - you can check dmesg and the X log from there14:59
jrmythats pretty much what i'd think i'd have to do14:59
jrmyhow do i get a log?14:59
moetunesless /var/log/Xorg.0.log   - down arrow to scroll - q to quit it15:00
jrmyalso my screen doesnt seem to be tty friendly for displaying correctly.. it always flickers or with the upgrade its like off15:00
jrmyanyways checking the log15:01
moetunesjrmy:  whay graphics pls15:01
moetuneswhat*15:01
jrmyi only know about the memory available which is 8MB15:02
jrmythe log appears to be empty15:02
jrmyhow do i check my system' stuff liek graphics and stuff?15:03
jrmysystem's*15:03
moetuneslspci will tell - vga for the graphics15:04
knomejrmy, lspci | grep vga15:04
jrmyim wondering if it doesnt support my laptop screen15:05
jrmyi can see if it works with my monitor seeing as i have a vga output15:05
moetunesmore then likely you need a boot option like   noapic15:06
moetunesif you know the brand and model we can check in google15:06
jrmymy display controller and vga compatible controller both say intel 82830 CGC15:08
jrmyi have a gateway solo 145015:09
moetunesk15:09
jrmyrather annoying looking at the flickering screen15:10
xGrindwhy requeriments xubuntu 10.10 ?15:10
jrmytalking to me xGrind?15:11
xGrindtoo15:11
xGrind;)15:11
jrmyok so you have a question pertaining your needs15:11
jrmyi thought it was about me15:11
charlie-tcaxGrind: same requirements as 10.0415:11
jrmysometimes when my laptop restarts it freezes right before rebooting15:12
jrmylike it closes everyything up to the point of rebooting and stops15:13
jrmywhich is alos what happened when i just upgraded to 10.1015:13
charlie-tcajrmy: You should be able to switch to a tty using Ctrl+Alt+f2 and use ctrl+alt+del to restart then15:14
jrmynever tried15:14
jrmynice to know now..15:14
jrmymight be why im having a problem15:15
jrmyi dont get why the log for X is empty15:16
jrmyi wonder if my computer tries switching to my vga controller?15:17
jrmyi dont think there is a way to disable it in bios15:17
DoctorPeppermoetunes: Looks like you called it.  I'll be going out for a new burner today15:18
moetunesbummer15:18
jrmyi'd hate for mine to stop workign correctly15:18
DoctorPepperI have a $50 Best Buy gift card, so it won't be that bad ;)15:19
moetunesjrmy:  seems it either works or doesn't from google - refresh rates are the main issue15:19
moetunesbut since you don't have a X log it might be more than that15:19
jrmythats what i assume is a problem there15:19
jrmyi think it refreshes at 60Hz but idk15:19
jrmydoes having a certain size screen make a difference?15:20
jrmyi could try booting with my monitor plugged into the vgz port15:21
jrmyvga*15:21
jrmyim gonna try it to see what happens15:21
jrmybrb15:22
jrmyback15:24
jrmyok so i just booted with the monitor plugged in and i got an error that had checksum as one of the words15:25
jrmyor however it actually spelled it15:25
jrmyand after it did the same blanking as before15:27
jrmyok so now what?15:28
jrmyback into tty from recovery mode15:28
moetunesbest I've found so far - http://www.knoppix.net/forum/archive/index.php/t-11733.html15:29
moetunesseems it needs   noscsi   as a boot option15:29
jrmywhat does knoppix have to do with xubuntu?15:32
Sysiit uses linux kernel15:32
Sysi(and is based on debian)15:32
jrmyi didnt have anyproblems with X besides the flickering with tty mode15:32
jrmywith 10.0415:32
jrmyok i have to take someone to work. i'll be back15:33
jrmylioke 20 minutes15:33
brimsI upgraded to 10.10 yesterday, all went well except that now in terminal when I type "man <anything>" I get the "WARNING: terminal is not fully functional". When I tried to edit files via VIM running with sudo I get an error "E558: Terminal entry not found in terminfo". I've been reading a lot of stuff online, tried setting TERM in .bashrc to vt320, vt100, and linux, each time logging out and back in, or running "source ~/.bashrc15:52
brims". Also tried installing ncurses-term which popularted /usr/share/terminfo, which I read was the issue. If I type "TERM=vt320 man ls" no problem, but if TERM is set in .bashrc I get the error messages. I've tried creating a new account to see if it was just one of my config files but I had the same problem. Any help would be appreciated.15:52

knomePrebenR, that wasn't what i asked really.16:17
PrebenRknome, it should look more professional and pleasing. Not something that a programmer drew in tuxpaint ;-) ;P16:18
Sysihave you checked you screen settings? :P16:18

jrmybooting into the live now16:22
knomePrebenR, that's what you should be getting in maverick16:22
moetunesk16:22
PrebenRknome, why not the second?16:22
knomePrebenR, there was discussion on which on the use, but the creator of the latter one didn't want his work published after all, so the first was chosen.16:23
knome*which to use16:23
PrebenRarg16:23
Sysiknome: do you see, people have bad taste and bad contrast in display :P16:23
knomePrebenR, why didn't we see any proposals by PrebenR?16:24
jrmyi wonder if cityscape is doing fine with his new installation16:24
PrebenRknome, I for sure will for next version ;) I didn't know there was a debate to change it16:24
knomePrebenR, there definitely was, a public request for artwork was made on several places. glad to hear you're going to contribute to the next version, i'm definitely looking forward to it16:25
Sysinew version, nwe artwork16:25
jrmycant you change it anyways?16:25
knomeyes, the aim is to refresh the artwork in every release, except maybe not in LTS releases16:25
knomejrmy, that's right.16:26
jrmyi remember you can in 10.04, or at least i thought16:26
jrmyok16:26
jrmyfinally booted16:26
knomewith gdm2setup you should be able to change it in maverick as well, and changing the wallpaper is really easy anyway.16:26
moetunesjrmy:  open a terminal16:26
jrmymy mouse isnt working16:27
knomePrebenR, +, there is an svg version of the "Rays" wallpaper, if you want to use that16:27
moetunesheh16:27
jrmyi think i may have disabled it in bios16:27
knomejrmy, alt+f2 -> run 'xfce4-terminal'16:27
jrmyyeah i know16:27
jrmyalready did16:27
knomePrebenR, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Xubuntu/Artwork/Maverick?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=xubuntu1010_wallpaper_rays.svg for the svg16:27
moetunesjrmy:  to check the hdd isn't mounted run   mount - look for sda1 or similar16:28
jrmyok what command?16:28
moetunesmount16:28
travkinfunny, after fresh Xubuntu 10.10 install running Firefox, and it shows "Welcome to Xubuntu 9.10!" :D16:28

jrmyi dont see anything saying sd116:29
Sysitravkin: old /home?16:29
travkinSysi, lol, do fresh install16:29
jrmysda1*16:30
travkinor just launch it in Live CD16:30
PrebenRknome, thanks, but if I can change the backgound I'll probably choose one of my photographs. And yes I will contribute. I'll pack my macro lense when I go on vacation in some days to get some nice material :-)16:30
Sysitravkin: i can't remember anything like that been there16:30
knomePrebenR, good to hear. #xubuntu-devel for development discussion - though now is probably a bit too early..16:30
charlie-tcaknome: you mean I have to try that again?16:31
moetunesjrmy:  cool - we need to make sure how the system sees the hdd so now run   sudo fdisk -l   it should list the hdd16:31
knomecharlie-tca, try what again?16:31
charlie-tcaartwork16:31
charlie-tcalol16:31
PrebenRknome, one question, is there a colour rule that it has to be in blue tones? Not a problem, just nice to know,,,16:31
charlie-tcaYou don't think it was hard enough once?16:31
knomePrebenR, charlie-tca is the right person to ask16:31
knomecharlie-tca, nah, just forget artwork. who needs it anyway!16:32
knome;)16:32
travkinSysi, /usr/share/xubuntu-docs/index.html16:32
PrebenRanother question. Anybody managed to get flashplugin-nonfree installed (amd64)16:32
travkin    <title>Xubuntu 9.10 Documentation</title>16:32
charlie-tcahmm, It doesn't have to be all blue, but it does need to have the xubuntu colors included16:32
charlie-tcaYou know, like blue sky?16:32
PrebenRnah16:32
travkinknome, check /usr/share/xubuntu-docs/index.html. i'm the one who having Xubuntu 9.10 there? :D16:32
PrebenRCan just convert the colour space ;)16:32
travkinfresh install of 10.1016:32
charlie-tcatravkin: docs are out of date16:33
charlie-tcaWant to help getting them right?16:33
knometravkin, i'm still running 10.0416:33
travkinah16:33
knomePrebenR, for reference on the xubuntu colors, see the logo svg16:33
jrmyhow do i highlight what it says without a mouse so i can pastebin it?16:34
PrebenRarg what happened to zsh16:34
jrmyeh.. i could screencap and imgur it16:34
moetunesjrmy:  yea that'll work16:34
knomejrmy, sudo apt-get install pastebinit16:34
charlie-tca!zsh16:35
charlie-tca!info zsh16:35

PrebenRyes, but why did you break it?16:35
charlie-tcaPrebenR: you can install it16:35
charlie-tcaI did not touch it16:35
PrebenRI have used it since 10.0416:36
PrebenRafter upgrading it won't work propoerly16:36
charlie-tcaand what is wrong with it?16:36
knomePrebenR, sometimes applications break16:36
jrmyok almost got it16:36
knomePrebenR, without anybody touching them16:36
charlie-tcaPerhaps it is affected by bug 62192716:37
ubottuLaunchpad bug 621927 in Ubuntu release notes "Embedded Terminal Emulator isn't giving a TERM variable" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/62192716:37

knomecharlie-tca, PrebenR: so 'export TERM=zsh'16:37
* charlie-tca is positive he did not break anything personally16:37
jrmyannoying not having a mouse16:37
charlie-tcano, set the TERM variable to xterm16:37
jrmythough i could plug in my usb mouse16:37
knome:P16:37
jrmyi just wont have a mouse for the computer im talking to you with16:38
jrmybrb16:38
PrebenRknome, yes but I cannot seem to get this to work with .profile nor .zshrc when I open a new terminal16:41
jrmyback16:42
Sysihave you  set zsh default instead of bash?16:42
moetunesjrmy:  do   e2fsck -p /dev/sda116:42
jrmysays need to be root.. so i put sudo first and then said it was clean16:44
jrmywell root or you must have read write access16:45
moetunesjrmy:  ok so no need to worry about the drop then :]16:45
jrmyyeah16:45
jrmyi dont know why it was fast though16:45
jrmyalos does it have to propmt for a password?16:45
jrmywhen i did the command with sudo?16:46
moetunesjrmy:  it should have taken at least a little while16:46
jrmycause it happened awfully fast]16:46
moetunesfo 30gb16:46
moetunestry it without the -p16:46
jrmyas well as sudo?16:47
jrmyas in with?16:47
moetunesyep16:47
jrmyfast once again16:47
jrmyi dont think its working right if im not prompted for a password16:48
moetuneslive cd doesn't have a sudo password16:48
jrmyok16:48
moetunesso that's fine16:48
moetuneswe've done it twice with no errors so I say it will be fine16:49
jrmyok, son not the problem16:49
jrmyso*16:49
moetunesclose the live cd and get to the grub menu16:49
moetunesnope the hdd seems fine16:50
moetunesat the grub menu press   e   when the kernel is highlighted16:50
moetunesif it'll let you...16:51
jrmyhold on im gonna enable my mouse first16:51
moetunescool16:51
moetunesgive me a ping then16:52
jrmyok16:52
jrmymoetunes, it says recordfaiol on the first line16:55
jrmyrecordfail*16:55
moetunesthat does not sound right - that was after hitting   e   ?16:56
moetunesis the next line down a kernel line?16:57
jrmyi'll type out everything hold on16:57
charlie-tcaIf it is more than one line, please use pastebin16:57

mark76I wish Ubuntu would drop the "Are you sure? Are you really, really sure you want to install this?" feature from Synaptic16:57
jrmyhow can i pastebin from grub?16:57
moetunesjrmy:  you can't16:58
jrmyif i could higlight stuff from another computer then great but i cant do this16:58
jrmyoh, as in put it in the site and post a link16:58
jrmyone sec16:58
moetunesit could be easier to take a pic16:59
jrmymoetunes, http://paste2.org/p/103180917:09
jrmyif i could only screencap it17:09
jrmythat was annoying17:09
moetunesk17:10
moetunesa phone with a camera is handy :]17:11
jrmyyeah17:12
jrmymy desktop's usb port is 1.0 and being occupied by my mouse17:12
moetunesthe next line down is the one with kernel in it?17:12
jrmyinside of said box?17:12
jrmyi assume so17:12
jrmyim calling it a box since its bordered by a white line17:13
moetunesk17:13
moetunesyou want to get the cursor to the end of "quiet splash"17:14
moetunesuse the arrow keys17:14
jrmyobviously17:14
moetunesheh17:14
jrmy:]17:14
moetunesit is not always obvious to some17:14
moetunes...17:14
jrmyits also sad17:15
jrmylol17:15
moetunesafter splash you add   noscsi17:16
jrmytwo spaces?17:16
_maddyhi17:17
moetunesnope I did that for clarity here17:17
moetunesbut failed obviously :]17:17
jrmyok so one space and noscsi17:17
jrmylol17:17
moetunesyep17:17
jrmyok now what?17:17
moetuneshit b for boot and we'll see17:17
moetunes_maddy:  hi :]17:18
moetunesjrmy:  is it booting?17:18
_maddyI'm a little bit shocked having just installed xubuntu 10.1017:19
jrmyim not sure what its doing17:19
jrmyok so it last flashed something for a split second and went blank17:19
moetunesjrmy:  hdd lights blinking?17:20
jrmyit was17:20
jrmybut then became unresponsive17:20
jrmyso i guess that didnt work17:21
moetunesjrmy:  it didn't go blank like that at that stage before?17:21
jrmyi'd record it and put it up on youtube if i could17:22
moetunesnp17:22
jrmyim back in grub though17:22
_maddyI guess it's recommended to just use normal ubuntu, since xubuntu seems rather unpolished?17:22
moetunesjrmy:  I think it needs a vga setting - same process this time type   vga=78817:22
jrmyits different this time17:23
moetunes_maddy:  funny resolution?17:23
charlie-tca_maddy: Hm, you stated your were shocked. Now it is unpolished.  Maybe you could explain just what is wrong17:23
moetunesjrmy:  how?17:23
jrmythe splash is gone17:23
jrmypart17:23
_maddywell multiple things, let me write them up17:24
charlie-tcaor file bugs17:24
jrmythe lines 7. and 8. int the paste are gone and replaced with something else17:25
jrmyin*17:25
jrmyaka in http://paste2.org/p/103180917:26
moetunesjrmy:  that is the same link as before dude :]17:27
jrmyi know17:27
moetuneswhat do they say now?17:27
jrmyone sec17:27
moetunestype it here on one line17:27
_maddycharlie-tca: here's some of my problems I encountered http://pastebin.com/xF8x28H517:28
charlie-tca_maddy: you are right. the installer is the same one used by Ubuntu17:30
charlie-tcaBut if you intalled it, those become NON-ISSUES17:30
_maddywell, the last one is the only one left to solve, sort of17:31
charlie-tcaYou should not be seeing the installer issues after the installation17:31
_maddyI'm not17:32
jrmymoetunes, http://paste2.org/p/103184017:32
charlie-tca_maddy: yes, that is the plymouth text screen, and is because of the hardware video. We are still trying to resolve the issue17:32
charlie-tcaso, unpolished?17:32
_maddywell, unpolished was maybe too harsh, I'm just really sad that the installer has taken a few steps backward...I really wanted to choose on which hd to install GRUB17:33
_maddyI found a thread about the purple screen with fglrx17:34
charlie-tcaYes, that option for grub was removed from the desktop installations of Ubuntu and Xubuntu17:34
moetunesjrmy:  it is the same except for the lines that start with   echo  - delete them17:34
charlie-tca_maddy: if you are advanced enough to know  the answer to the grub question, you can use the alternate cd to install from. It does give you the choice17:35
moetunesjrmy:  that was my bad - I said hit b to boot and it should have been ctrl+x17:35
jrmyoh17:35
jrmyi know, i quickly figured that out17:36
jrmyok so delete the lines with echo in them?17:36
moetunesyep17:36
jrmydone17:37
moetunesadd the   noscsi   after splash and then hit ctrl+x to boot17:37
jrmyafter splash?17:37
jrmywhat splash?17:37
_maddycharlie-tca: ok thanks, I've never even thought about using the alternate cd17:38
moetunesyou picked the recovery kernel then - see the single written there17:38
charlie-tcaThe desktop installation with the GUI is intentionally kept as simple as possible17:38
jrmyok so quiet splash is replaced with single17:38
jrmyi get it17:38
_maddyI know that, I just remember the GUI install had the grub-option under "advanced settings" or such button17:39
_maddyin earlier version17:39
moetunesjrmy:  no you selected the wrong kernel it seems - hit esc17:39
charlie-tcayes, it did. It is constantly being looked at to simplify it whenever possible.17:39
jrmyreplace single with 'quiet splash' then add noscsi?17:39
moetunesjrmy:  to get to the grub menu17:39
BesogonCan anybody help me with Xorg and intel17:39
jrmyok17:39
Besogongraphic card17:39
Besogon?17:39
jrmydeleting the echo's werent bad were they?17:40

jrmyah, nvm it discards them17:40
moetunesjrmy:  hitting esc discards the edit you did17:40
moetunes:]17:40
jrmyanyways typing noscsi17:40
moetunesjrmy:  wait17:40
jrmyno?17:40
moetunesjrmy:  are you in the kernel where it says splash?17:41
jrmyyes17:41
BesogonOK.17:41
BesogonHow could I fix this? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting17:41
Besogontrouble17:41
jrmymoetunes, i went up and highlighted the top most which says 2.6.35-22 or whatever17:42
moetunesjrmy:  cool - I had to check - yep do the   noscsi   thing17:42
jrmynow boot again?17:42
Besogon"NO kernel modesetting driver detected"17:42
moetunesjrmy:  yep with ctrl+x17:42
charlie-tcaBesogon: you tried the "Turning it off" part under lucid?17:43
jrmyno difference17:43
_maddyanyone have any idea why I can't use alt+1 in irssi, but alt+2, alt+3 etc work normally?17:43
jrmyi believe my only option is to hold the power button17:44
jrmylike before17:44
Besogoncharlie-tca, no. I don't know how to do that17:44
moetunesjrmy:  that's fine - b for boot was for grub1 - seems grub2 has that as well just added the ctrl+x17:45
Besogonecho options i915 modeset=0 > /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf17:45
BesogonI haven't the file17:45
charlie-tcaBesogon: do you have the i915 ?17:45
Besogonlet me look17:45
charlie-tcaYou just type this in a terminal, it will create the file when you hit Enter17:46
charlie-tcaecho options i915 modeset=0 > /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf17:46
Besogoncharlie-tca, No. This is 945GME Express Integrated GC17:46
moetunesjrmy:  we could try other options then noscsi if you want - from the google searches I did on your lappy it seems with each new kernel more support for your lappy is removed17:46
charlie-tcaBesogon: I don't know if it will work then17:46
charlie-tcaTry changing the i915 to i94517:47
Besogonok. But firstly I'll reinstall kms lib.17:47
jrmymoetunes, well that blows17:47
moetunesBesogon:  I think you need   nomodeset   as a kernel boot option - google will confirm or not17:48
jrmymoetunes, if we get it working i dont care whatever we can think of is good17:48
moetunesjrmy:  it sure does - the lappy is only 8 trs old17:48
moetunesjrmy:  cool - instead of noscsi use   vga=788   after splash17:49
jrmyok,17:49
BesogonI knew the problem flew from old grub config..17:49
moetunesjrmy:  and remove splash so you get text instead of the splash screen - it might let you see what's happening17:49
jrmywell if i didnt just boot it then sure17:50
moetunesheh17:50
moetunesnext time17:50
jrmyubuntu 10.10 with a purple background diplayed first in the center then secondly opffset17:51
jrmyand back to black and nothing17:51
moetunesthat's an improvement then?17:51
jrmyi guess17:51
moetunestry it without splash17:52
jrmyso no splash or no quiet splash?17:52
BesogonI've found out that I change the grub config with 'nomodeset' parameter17:52
Besogonhe he17:53
moetunesjust remove splash17:53
moetunesBesogon:  :]17:53
_maddyI have the purple background problem too, tried switching my monitor to other connector on the vga, no help17:53
jrmynope does the battery check and whatever and goes black with no hard drive function17:54
Besogonmoetunes, Give me a second to try it with other grub file and I will think what you mean by 'remove splash'17:54
moetunesBesogon:  that wasn't for you mate sorry17:55
Besogonmoetunes, Does remove mean to delete?17:56
moetunesjrmy:  fine - now for klaus' fix for old lappies - add   noapic nolapic   after the vga=78817:56
jrmyi can keep splash17:56
jrmy?17:56
moetunesBesogon:  yep - but I was talking to jrmy when I said remove splash17:56
moetunesjrmy:  not for now - we get info without it17:57
jrmybooting17:57
Besogonaha17:58
jrmyhmm displayed something else this time for a split second17:58
jrmybut once again black17:58
jrmyand the thing it displayed was before the thing it has17:59
moetunesjrmy:  so we got less? - add just to check you didn't type a one instead of a L?18:00
moetunesin nolapic?18:00
jrmymy font on xchat displays 1 and l differently18:01
charlie-tca_maddy: the only you can fix that is remove the "splash" or go back to the non-proprietary video driver18:01
Venimi can't seem to get the xubuntu upgrade from the alternate install cd to run18:01
jrmything before was white text18:01
_maddycharlie-tca: just remove the word quiet in boot/menu.lst?18:01
Venimwhen i try to run cdromupgrade i get some python error18:01
charlie-tca<charlie-tca> _maddy: the only you can fix that is remove the "splash" or go back to the non-proprietary video driver18:01
jrmynormal text is the battery check and stuff with white letters and like orange letters with asterisks as well18:01
Besogonmoetunes, It works. thanks18:02
jrmywhich i think is a normal kernel loader or something18:02
charlie-tcanot in menu.lst unless you removed grub218:02
_maddyright, I just noticed there isn't even that file18:03
_maddyso how?18:03
moetunesBesogon:  great!18:03
charlie-tca/etc/default/grub18:03
_maddychanging the graphics mode e.g. resolution wouldn't fix it?18:04
charlie-tcaNot that I know18:05
_maddyGRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"18:05
_maddychange to "" ?18:05
charlie-tcait is a conflict with the hardware driver and kms. I don't think the resolution will matter18:05
charlie-tcaThat will give you a screen full of text instead of the purple thing18:05
_maddywhat about remove only the splash?18:06
charlie-tcaThat is what I told you to remove already18:06
charlie-tcaI never said remove "quiet"18:06
jrmymoetunes, since i have both a vga output and my other diplay controller is there a command for the primary one?18:11
jrmyi dont think the vga matters since im not using a monitor18:11
jrmywhat if i boot with the older kernel?18:11
jrmy2.6.32-25?18:12
_maddyok done18:12
moetunesjrmy:  worth a shot18:12
charlie-tca_maddy: great18:13
jrmyit brought me to tty mode18:13
charlie-tcajrmy: I have both dvi and vga outputs on my card. It uses whichever one is connected to the monitor18:13
_maddycharlie-tca: what about removing the avahi network discovery service notification after boot?18:13
jrmyas in this works for18:13
jrmythe most part18:13
charlie-tcabut vga always takes priority18:14
charlie-tca_maddy: removing it causes issues18:14
jrmyno X though18:14
charlie-tcaYou can turn it off in /etc/default , I think18:14
jrmyis it possible my battery is causing the issue?18:15
jrmycause it seems to be stuck at battery checking18:15
charlie-tca_maddy: /etc/default/avahi-daemon - change it from 0 to 118:15
jrmyit is old, and my power supply is under volt and under amp18:15
moetunesjrmy:  is the power cord plugged in?18:16
jrmyium not the idot that bought it though, my friend did so thinking it would be a good replacement18:16
jrmyyeah18:16
jrmycharged to the capacity that its able to18:16
jrmywhat if i remove the battery?18:17
jrmyand boot with just the the power supply18:17
jrmybut yeah im brought to tty mode when i boot the older kernel18:18
moetunesjrmy:  I wouldn't know anything abut that sorry - doesn't sound good tho18:18
jrmybut ctrl alt f7 is on the screen for what i said18:18
moetunesjrmy:  does   startx   do anything/18:18
jrmyi'll just post what that screen is18:18
charlie-tcaTry all the ctrl+alt+F? keys18:19
charlie-tcasee if you get a display on a different screen18:19
jrmyfatal error: no screens found18:20
jrmyapparently it doesnt know what screen to use or something18:20
jrmywould be nice if my screen wasnt offset18:21
moetunesjrmy:  did you add the vga bit?18:21
jrmyi think its a tad to big and thats why it displays incorrectly18:21
jrmyi just booted the older kernel without changes18:22

RiottaI think it's not18:27
charlie-tcaIf you are opening it in the browser, it will not default to xchat. It will default to the browser18:27
charlie-tcaThe job of the browser is to catch those links and open them18:27
Riottait catches alright but it run xdg-open with wrong app18:28

charlie-tcaYou have to find the place in chromium to tell it to use xchat instead of xdg-open, I think. firefox uses "about:config" to set options. I don't know what chromium uses18:46
charlie-tcaBut I think it is screwing up the link, too. It should open that in the browser using webchat18:47
Riottachromium use xdg-open as generic open handler it reads from somewhere those apps18:47
charlie-tcaheh18:48
Riottait's like gnome-run or whatever18:48
charlie-tcatry typing xdg-open in a terminal18:48
charlie-tcaIt has to decide what the app should be, not xdg-open18:48
Riottaonly help commands18:48
Riottatried that already18:48
charlie-tcaxdg-open is a generic command to open an app in the terminal. It needs an application to open, though18:49
charlie-tcaYou can use xdg-open xchat in a terminal to open xchat18:49
BesogonWow the mutter requares too much of my CPU resourses! I'm going to install Xfce or LXDE on my netbook then18:49
charlie-tcabut xdg-open does not know what you want to use. Chromium has to tell it18:50
charlie-tcaBesogon: mutter? Is that in Xubuntu?18:50
Besogoncharlie-tca, Just now I'm writting it to you from xfce on my computer but I have the netbook too. (I don't want to update desktop system as there is installed GNU octave from sources18:52

_maddyonce for now, I added it to /etc/environment18:57
charlie-tcavidd: put it in /home/USER/.bashrc18:57
charlie-tcait will run by itself. Otherwise, run it in terminal to set it until you restart the system18:57
rxsvidd: Yes I too found the issue annoying only in xfce4-terminal .. terminator on the other hand on 10.10 works just fine with nano.18:58
charlie-tcaI know of at least 10 apps that need that fix already18:58
RiottaI know that chromium can't say xdg-open what to open it should know alone19:00
Riottaadresses like this irc://irc.freenode.net/xubuntu should be handled by xchat but they are dont probably on gnome it would work19:01

charlie-tcaooops, _maddy19:04
charlie-tcaThat is the xfwm theme19:04
_maddywell that's what I've been trying, I just figured maybe there's a separate setting for the color hidden somewhere19:04
charlie-tcaThere is, but you have to modify the theme itself19:05
Riottacharlie-tca: what you have when you click on link Op for irc://irc.freenode.net/ubuntu-us-tn (Current)19:07

Arpad2although now Im worrid that KpackageKit will install kubuntu20:17
charlie-tcait shouldn't if you did not have it already20:19
Arpad2ok20:20
Arpad2what are the major differencies between the two distros?20:21
Arpad2!kde20:22
ubottuKDE (http://kde.org) is the !desktop environment used natively in !Kubuntu. To install from Ubuntu: « sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop », or see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingKDE . See http://kubuntu.org for more information.20:22
_maddydahaic: I'll try that too20:25
charlie-tcaArpad2: xubuntu uses Xfce, Kubuntu uses KDE. The are much different environments20:27
Arpad2charlie-tca : and Xfce is the better one ? :)20:28
charlie-tcaAs far as Xubuntu is concerned, it is the best!20:29
Arpad2as far as I understood xubuntu is designed for laptops and is good for older pcs?20:30
mark76It is? :/20:30
charlie-tcaIt is designed to be lighter in resources than Ubuntu, so it is good for older pcs. It is not designed specifically for laptops.20:31
Arpad2ok20:31
charlie-tcaIt is also good for new systems, since it is lighter in resources. It takes less RAM and cpu power20:31
Arpad2ok20:31
Arpad2well primarily that was the reason i started linux with xubuntu20:32
charlie-tcaThat is a very good reason20:32
