TheMusoAlanBell: Problem with that is X. I have heard of many reports where people try to boot headless/no monitor connected, and X refuses to load due to no monitor.01:15
JanCX should start if you make it use the 'dummy' video driver I assume01:20
paul_h1hard to make it do that if you've got no monitor01:22
JanCI guess it could be a fallback option if X refuses to start?  although, that would probably not be a good idea for most use cases...  ;)01:36
JanCmaybe a boot option01:36
paul_h1I don't know the origin of this thread. my point is that as someone who can't see: it's hard to know when to specify boot options when the CD is booting01:41
TheMusopaul_h1: AlanBell suggested that if you start the live CD without a monitor, an audio/screen reader instal is run by default...01:56
paul_h1TheMuso: what? since when?01:59
TheMusoAlanBell: It was just a suggestion.01:59
TheMusopaul_h1: ^^ sorry meant you01:59
paul_h1TheMuso: oh with you...02:01

Fudgeim trying to do the accessible install now but the steps have changed10:48
Fudgewell, i think they have10:48
AlanBellyes, I think the installer has changed quite a bit10:48
AlanBellI was planning to do a keystroke by keystroke guide to the installer sometime soon10:49
Fudgeany idea where i could find out whats changed?10:49
AlanBelldidn't want to start it until the final CD was released10:49
Fudgeyou are sighted?10:49

AlanBellI will probably go through it tomorrow evening I think10:51
Fudgedont guess u have some time now to take a squiz at it10:51
Fudgeah, understood10:51
Fudgeits approaching 0pm here 10:51
Fudge910:51
AlanBellI need to rearrange some hard disks in computers first11:01
AlanBellactually I will have a runthrough in a virtual machine before I try it on real hardware11:25
AlanBelloh wow, that is rubbish11:28
AlanBellI will have to rethink how to do this blog post11:31
PendulumAlanBell: that bad?12:10
AlanBellyeah12:12
Pendulum:(12:15
AlanBellI think I may do a video of it with audio if I can12:16
AlanBelldo a screencast of the install in a vm12:16
Pendulum:)12:16

AlanBellI am working on getting http://moinmo.in/ThemeMarket/SimpleMente installed on wiki.ubuntu.com15:11
AlanBellit is a moin wiki theme with improved support for screenreaders15:11
AlanBellmight not be perfect, but it seems to be a sound base for improving upon15:11
charlie-tca:-)15:12
AlanBellgood luck with the openweek session charlie-tca, I will miss it live, but will catch the logs18:15
charlie-tcaThanks. I will do my best18:15
Fudgehi all22:59
FudgeAlanBell  how bad is it loL22:59
AlanBellhi Fudge, it is totally silent :(22:59
AlanBellabsolutely no way I could figure it out without seeing it23:00
Fudgeare the accessibility steps still in the installer?23:05
AlanBellkind of23:05
Fudgei tried to boot it normally last night by just letting it load and it still didnt come to the party23:06
Fudgeas when you setup orca i assume tha tyou can still restart gnome to enable the accessibility profile23:06
AlanBellyou press space after a bit, then F5 then down 3 times (I think it is 3)23:06
Fudgeso u dont have to choose a language now?23:07
AlanBellthen it boots with orca, but orca can't see the installer dialog or any contents23:07
AlanBelloh, sorry, yes the language question first23:07
Fudgeso i was trying to push the number 3 and enter23:07
AlanBellone sec, let me fire up the VM again23:07
Fudgeno worries23:07
Fudgei wish i could just ssh -X to the box once installing ssh to the live cd and install over an X session 23:08
Fudgebut when ever ive tried things like that orca says inaccessible23:08
AlanBellok, turn on, hit space23:08
AlanBellasking me for language so I hit return to select English23:08
AlanBellF5 for accessibility menu23:09
AlanBelldown 3 times for Screen Reader23:09
AlanBellenter again to try Ubuntu without installing (it would be down+enter to go to the installer rather than to the desktop)23:10
AlanBelljungle drums23:10
AlanBellwelcome to Orca23:11
Fudgeok im at that step23:11
AlanBell(which I think should be welcome to Ubuntu)23:11
Fudgeyes true23:11
Fudgeyour post was interesting from a headless install23:11
AlanBellone thing I want to do is show how accessible technology is dead handy for everyone23:12
Fudgei think orca at gdm login is really good for small children23:12
AlanBelland get more people interested in it, and fixing bugs with it23:12
paul_h1AlanBell: Orca is saying that it is starting. it isn't just Ubuntu's screen reader23:12
AlanBellexcellent point23:12
Fudgesee my cd has stopped spinning now with no desktop23:12
AlanBellpaul_h1: yes, I understand that, I just think on first boot of the live CD it should read out some useful text, starting with welcome to Ubuntu23:13
AlanBellthen explain what Orca is23:13
AlanBellFudge: you have a monitor plugged in?23:13
Fudgeyou said arrow down three times, as in to the fourth option?23:13
Fudgeyes23:13
AlanBellcorrect23:14
Fudgealthough this box works headless with no X issues anyhow23:14
AlanBellthe options are: None, High Contrast, Magnifier, Screen Reader, Braille Terminal, Keyboard Modifiers, On-Screen Keyboard23:15
Fudgei dont understand why none needs to be there23:15
AlanBellquite how you are supposed to select the On-Screen Keyboard option without actually having a real keyboard is a mystery23:15
FudgeloL23:15
Fudgemouse?23:15
AlanBellno, you can't use a mouse at this point of the installer23:16
Fudgeonce hitting space i see a bright screen with a light coloured background23:16
AlanBellis that right at the start of the process?23:17
Fudgeyes23:17
AlanBellyou might be looking at the list of languages then23:18
AlanBellit is getting late here, I am going to have to leave it for tonight23:18
AlanBellnight all o/23:19
Fudgethanks mate23:19
Fudgeits morning here lol23:19
AlanBellFudge: what country are you in?23:20
Fudgeaustralia23:20
Fudgestate of tasmania23:20
AlanBellnice23:20
dutchiei know people from tasmania!23:20
* AlanBell is in the UK23:21
Fudgemm i seem to be stuck in some prompt where arrowing around produces a pc speaker beep23:21
Fudgeah 10 hours ahead23:21
Fudgeblind ppl dutchie ?23:21
dutchieFudge: no, rowing people23:21
Fudgean X of mine used to row23:21
Fudgealot of nice ppl in volved in the sport23:21
dutchie(not that the things are mutually exclusive)23:21
* dutchie goes back to calculus23:22
Fudgejoy :p23:22
AlanBellFudge: you could ask in #ubuntu-au for someone to walk through the install with you23:23
dutchiewell, i did ask for it by studying maths at university23:23
Fudgewow dutchie 23:23
FudgeAlanBell  ill prob wait for a mate to come round but thanks for suggestion23:23
paul_h1Fudge: which version of ubuntu are you trying to install? if it's Maverick you have no chance if you rely on Orca speech. I recommend you install Lucid then do a distro upgrade to Maverick23:25
Fudgei did try that nad it failed miserably lol23:26
Fudgeits no biggy im just trying to take a peak at the new changes in it since alpha3 when i used it for a bit on my cli box23:26
TheMusoI don't think "welcome to..." is what should be said. "Orca is ready" is beter.23:38
TheMusobetter23:38
Fudgehowdy23:42
paul_h1TheMuso: probably, but it's splitting hairs a bit...23:43
TheMusoHow so?23:46
paul_h1well I just mean that 'orca is ready' or 'welcome to orca' ... doesn't really matter. so long as you know it's running23:47
Fudgei think orca shoudl automatically unmute volume control if its muted23:47
TheMusoFudge: No, orca should not touch volume at all, period.23:52
TheMusopaul_h1: Right, but welcome to orca sounds weird, contextually.23:52
TheMusoTo me anyway.23:52
paul_h1TheMuso: sure, I agree. just saying it's not that important + agree totally on volume issue23:53
TheMusoYeah I see your point.23:54
