netritiousI have a remote host "pfg" logging to syslog on hardy on my local network. What do I add to /etc/syslog.conf in order to have messages from pfg written to /var/log/pfg.log instead of /var/log/syslog ?01:06
lateniteHi folks, I am trying to format ma usb pendrive  but it fails -without error- http://pastie.org/1234249 what am I doing wrong here ? thanks01:46
twbLooks like the stick didn't like you removing its partition table.01:47
twbThe file /dev/sdb doesn't exist, which implies that kernel lost contact with the device, and udev removed it from /dev.01:48
twbTry removing and reinserting the device; check dmesg before and after.01:48
_Techie_replug the device01:48
_Techie_also, mount -t ext /dev/sdb /mnt/stick/01:49
latenitehttp://pastie.org/1234261 no luck. I swear the stick is not broken...it workes fine befor formating it a minute ago01:51
_Techie_latenite, try -t extfs01:52
_Techie_been awhile since ive had to mount a removable drive, so im a bit rusty01:52
arrrghhhit's it -t <fs>01:53
arrrghhhso -t ext2?01:53
arrrghhhisn't it01:53
_Techie_well, i have a feeling that all extX's01:53
arrrghhhhrm01:53
_Techie_are put under one fs type01:53
arrrghhhyea, i think you're right... sorry :S01:53
latenitearrrghhh, _Techie_ I used mkfs.ext3 to format (sie paste) and -t ext3 fails.01:54
arrrghhhwait01:54
arrrghhhyou formatted a flash card as ext3?!?01:54
twb_Techie_: if you look at the error, you can see that the block device doesn't exist; forcing a filesystem type won't help.01:54
arrrghhhi thought journaled FS are a big no-no on flash cards.01:55
arrrghhhi always format mine as ext2 or VFAT01:55
latenitetwb, right. but why is taht so? after formating freshly01:55
latenitearrrghhh, why would the be a nono?01:55
arrrghhhthe journaling screws up the cards i thought...01:56
arrrghhhnot sure how that works on SSD's tho.01:56
latenitehttp://pastie.org/123426801:56
arrrghhhdoes /dev/sdb even exist?01:57
arrrghhhit might've changed with the replug01:57
latenitesure http://pastie.org/123426801:57
lateniteany more ideas what is screwing that up?02:00
arrrghhhuhm02:02
arrrghhhi don't get it, does /dev/sdb exist or not?02:02
arrrghhhdo a 'ls -lah /dev/disk/by-uuid'02:03
twblatenite: because your key is crap?02:16
latenitetwb, cfdisk sais: Warning!!  Unsupported GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected. Use GNU Parted.02:16
latenitewtf is that? :)02:16
arrrghhhyou need to recreate the partition table.02:16
arrrghhhor, perhaps, create would be the correct word.02:17
twblatenite: sounds like there was a GPT partition table there, and you didn't correctly remove it.02:17
twbWrite zeroes over the first megabyte, then mke2fs -j /dev/sdb again.02:17
latenitetwb, still no luck : http://pastie.org/123431102:23

ehcahI thought I had disabled the "root" account. Did I just become root for that command only?14:05
RoyKsudo -i14:05
RoyK-i == interactive14:05
RoyKdisabled root means you can't login as root over ssh14:05
ehcahah.14:06
PiciRoyK: Er, you can if you use key-based auth.14:06
RoyKyou will always have the possibility to run, say, bash with sudo14:06
RoyKPici: not on my servers :)14:06
PiciBy default you can.14:06
RoyKyeah14:06
ehcahUsing sudo, I get.  Actually getting the ROOT prompt, surprised me.14:06
ehcahroot... prompt should have said.14:07
RoyKwell, sudo lets you run something as root, and now it's running a shell14:07
RoyKmeaning you're root14:07
ehcahgot it.14:07
RoyKanywy - try -A with iptables14:07
RoyKit won't survive a reboot, but we'll get to that later14:08
ehcahRan the command succesfully.14:08
ehcahI had already given my eth0 a static IP and set a DHCP range in /etc/dhcp3/ last night.14:08
ehcahIs there something else I should do before turning off DHCP on my Telco Gateway and rebooting my laptop?14:09
RoyKdoes your linux box get an official ip from the telco when you connect it directly?14:10
RoyKstart with checking that14:10
alonswartzhey folks - any puppet experts in the room? I would like to discuss a possible idea for a session in UDS.14:11
ehcahNo.  My gateway get's its external IP through DHCP from the Telco.  I assign the gateway an address of 192.168.1.5 and turn off DHCP services. eth0 is statically assigned 192.168.1.25 and DHCP Server and DNS Server are started.14:12
RoyKok, and then the clients are on 192.168.2.0/24 ?14:12
RoyKbtw, no need to disable the dhcp server on the gateway so long as only the linux box is connected to it - dhcp won't pass through a router14:13
ehcahThis may not be correct, but I start the DHCP rante at 192.168.1.100-175.  I assume the I should have answered you like 192.168.1.0/2414:14
RoyKnever mind that14:14
RoyKthat's the dhcp server on the telco's router, right?14:14
ehcahRoyK - It must be the way my devices are plugged into my switches, but I have found the gateway and my server to be in competition sometimes if I do not disable it.14:15
RoyKehcah: pastebin 'ifconfig -a', please14:15
RoyKehcah: then the cabling is wrong - use a direct cable (it might need to be crossover, but I doubt it) from the telco router to the linux box. then connect the linux box's internal nic to the switch14:16
ehcahRoyK:  That would be my problem then.  I am not using eth1 at all.14:16
ehcahHow can I pastebin from a putty ssh terminal session?14:17
RoyKeh14:17
ehcahI can not copy and paste?14:17
RoyKyou're setting up a router with _one_ nic?14:17
RoyKthat won't work14:17
RoyKthat is, it might work if you're a good linux hacker, but AFAICS you're not14:18
RoyKso get another nic14:18
noaXesshave a 3ware 9650SE raid controller in my server... have build a raid1 and a raid5 in the controller.. but i can't see them in my ubuntu server setup?.. need i a driver to access the raid? i thought a driver with a hardware rai controller isn't needed??14:44
noaXess=??14:54
RoyKnoaXess: 9650SE should be supported14:54
noaXessRoyK: doesn't work.. hm... can it be cause the raid isn't finaly initialed?14:55
RoyKI don't think so - I think  that can be done i the background14:55
RoyKwhat does lshw say?14:55
noaXessRoyK: so i don't need any driver to use on server setup right? or need i choose the 3w9xxxx driver?14:55
noaXessRoyK: just a moment.. will check14:56
RoyKI've setup a dozen or more servers with 3ware controllers, and it's never been a problem except once where the distro was too old for a pci express card14:57
noaXessRoyK: the raid will be builded in foreground.. so is it then possible that's it's not ready for use?14:59
noaXessi see the controller and can control the attached hd's14:59
RoyKI guess you're right15:00
noaXessRoyK: so build the raid in background and use it while it wil be builded, right?15:00
noaXesssorry.. long time ago i worked with a hardware controller ;)..15:00
RoyKyes15:00
noaXessok..15:00
RoyKif you choose to build in the foreground, a reboot will probably interrupt that15:01
mathiazttx: o/15:02

noaXessRoyK: same... have created a raid1 background and the oder raid5 in he background.. but can't see them in ubuntu server installatio.. lshw isn't available in server install..15:11
mathiazSpamapS: http://confoo.ca/en <- interesting to you?15:12
noaXessRoyK: lspci will show me the 3ware controller15:13
noaXesshm...15:13
RoyKnoaXess: nothing in /proc/partitions either?15:15
noaXessRoyK: no..15:17
RoyK10.04?15:17
noaXessRoyK: in the mainboard bios, boot settings i can just choose the 3ware controller.. and not the two raid's i created..15:17
noaXess10.04.115:17
RoyKit's normal that the mainboard bios doesn't see raid controllers like ordinary drives15:18
RoyKwell, after all the talk of not using 10.10 for servers, this is one of the reasons to try it - new hardware...15:18
noaXessRoyK: ok...15:19
noaXessdownload........15:19
noaXessRoyK: you wrote that the 3w 9650 is supported.. from who? unbuntu 10.04?15:20

noaXessRoyK: ah you wrote: should be.. hm.. trying 10.10 after downloading and burning..15:21

RoyKa cute little 1U pizzabox with 64 gigs of RAM and 2x8-core CPUs :D15:22
noaXessRoyK: yes.. same controller here..hm...15:23
noaXessRoyK: and your setup was without any driver?15:23
RoyKnoaXess: this is a 2-port controller15:23
noaXessi have the 4port15:23
RoyKdriver is included15:23
noaXessno.. also 2port controller for 8 hd's15:23
noaXess4 each port15:23
RoyKerm - did't you say you were building a RAID-5 and a RAID-1?15:24
RoyKAFAIK you can't span a RAID-5 over more controllers with 3ware15:24
lateniteHi folks, can you recommend a benchmarktool? I tried povray and would like to try some others, too15:24
noaXessRoyK: have 6 hd's, 2x 500gb, 4x 2tb.. 2x500gb -> raid1, 4x 2tb-> raid515:24
RoyKah15:24
RoyKic15:24
noaXessRoyK: oing.. but why does it not warn me?..15:24
RoyKwell, you have two mirrors and a raid515:25
noaXessbut the raid1 should be used.. or does it fail too?15:25
RoyKno problems with that15:25
RoyKbut you won't be able to make a 6-drive RAID-5 with two 4-port cards15:26
noaXessRoyK: have just one controller.. so my setup of the raid's is ok?... on first port there are 2 500gb and 2 2tb hd's.. and on the second the other 2 2tb hd's15:26
RoyK(unless I'm terribly mistaken)15:26
uvirtbotNew bug: #663920 in eucalyptus (main) "public IPs unroutable from instances" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/66392015:26

noaXessi have 6 hd's.. 2x 500gb, 4x 2 tb15:26
noaXessok15:26
noaXesshm.. what can be wrong?15:27
RoyKnewer firmware or hardware revision15:27
RoyKperhaps a new pci id that isn't recognized15:27
RoyKthat's quite common15:27
noaXessRoyK: ok.. so try with 10.1015:27
RoyKyep15:27
noaXessRoyK: and if that fails.. i will boot from a live-cd and send lspci information about the controller15:28
noaXess10.10 livecd15:28
RoyKyep15:28
noaXessRoyK: for my understanding.. ubuntu will need a driver to work with the controller.. right?15:29
RoyKnoaXess: yes, and most drivers are included15:30
RoyKnoaXess: the 3w-9xxx driver is indeed included15:31
RoyKbut when a driver loads, it looks for a known PCI ID15:31
RoyKthat is - I'm unsure about how that works on PCI Express15:32
* RoyK might be wrong15:32
RoyKanyway - try 10.1015:32
RoyKif that doesn't work, something may be bad with your setup15:32
noaXessRoyK: 10.10 also won't work.. will use a 10.04 kubuntu to start live.. and check lspci and lshw15:35
RoyKk15:37
RoyKnoaXess: how long will it take for those RAIDs to build?15:37
noaXessRoyK: hm... i don't see any progress... i15:39
RoyKthere should be a percentage indicator15:39
RoyKperhaps try to destroy them all and only create the root mirror first15:39
RoyKthat probably won't take too much time building15:40

noaXessRoyK: no data.. fresh server.. can do rebuild raid1.. or recreate15:47

drcodeI see15:49
drcodethanx roy15:49
RoyKnoaXess: but ... you said you had a four-port controller, right? you can't have a raid1 _and_ a raid5 on that one15:50
RoyKeither one raid5 or two mirrors15:50
RoyKmirror == raid115:50
RoyKnoaXess: did you create a raid5 on two drives???15:54
noaXessRoyK: now i create the raid1 on 2 drives.. and no i have created the raid5 on 4 drives... raid 5 need a minimum 3 drives15:55
RoyKnoaXess: I thought you said you only had one controller15:56
RoyKwith 4 ports15:56
noaXessRoyK: a question.. in advanced settings on creating the raid on the 3ware controller there is a opetion: Boot Volume Size.. need i really set it manually?15:56
noaXessRoyK: one controller with two ports.. on each ports the controller can handle 4 hd's15:56
RoyKnoaXess: never mind that - it's for splitting up the RAID into smaller volumes15:56
noaXessRoyK: so don't need set Boot Volume Size15:57
RoyKnoaXess: erm... SAS expanders?15:57
RoyKno15:57
RoyKnoaXess: what is the full model name of that controller?15:59
RoyKnoaXess: the one I'm using is 9650SE-2LP16:00

JamesPagemathiaz: OK16:01
noaXessRoyK: 3ware 9650SE-8LPML16:01
RoyKnoaXess: ah - that's an 8-port16:03
noaXessRoyK: the 3w-9650se should realy be supported..16:03
noaXessRoyK: so i sad.. but to connectors.. ok ;).. and each connector has 4 ports..16:03
RoyKnoaXess: nevertheless - did you try to create that mirror in the foreground?16:05
noaXessRoyK: wait..16:05
noaXessRoyK: i create the raid1, and press F8 to finisch, then it ask about saving the config, i press Y, then: Parameter isn't changeable, press any key to continue.. i press any key, and it leaves controller configuration..16:08
RoyKwtf?16:08
RoyKis there a choice in the controller menu to just reset everything?16:10
noaXessRoyK: now on reboot i go into controller config and see: exportable units.. and there is my raid1.. but no creating progres..16:10
noaXessRoyK: yes..16:10
noaXesswill try16:10
noaXessRoyK: what about the message if i save the config: Parameter isn't changeable?16:12
RoyKthat's what I'm worrying about16:13
noaXessRoyK: i will try to set the Boot Volume size same as the raid1 size16:15
RoyKthat really shouldn't matter16:15
RoyKjust create a new raid1 for the root16:15
RoyKit should get exported16:15
RoyKunless there is some manual export thing in this controller16:15
noaXessRoyK: ok..16:15
noaXessdon't see anything..16:15
RoyK[17:10]  <noaXess> RoyK: now on reboot i go into controller config and see: exportable units.. and there is my raid1.. but no creating progres..16:16
RoyKperhaps that means you'll need to explicitly export it?16:16
ttxJamesPage: looking at the jython merge, it's in the same situation as the Groovy merge, it introduces a few new deps tat we'd have to MIR first16:17
ttxJamesPage: could you add it to your "sucky packages" list ?16:18
noaXessRoyK: hm... don't really know.. but if the raid1 will be build, i should see some hd activity, ight?..16:19
noaXessright ^16:19
RoyKyes16:21
noaXessRoyK: i started now verifying the raid1.. maybe..16:21
noaXessRoyK: have no export option...16:22
_rubenbah .. the installer insists on using GPT for my 2TB drives (which are smaller than 2^41 bytes which is the max for a MBR/DOS label)16:23
RoyKI checked the 3ware manual - exportable units should be visible for the OS16:23
noaXessRoyK: ok.. hm.. verifing now at 3%..16:24
RoyKwell, let's hope that works16:24
noaXessi also found this: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/maverick/man4/twa.4freebsd.html16:24
RoyKwell, the twa utility, or even tw_cli, will help you once you get the system up and running16:25
noaXessRoyK: ok..16:25
RoyKI wrote a nagios plugin using tw_cli to check drive status16:25
noaXessRoyK: oi.. cool..16:25
RoyK(or I found one and rewrote that, don't remember)16:25
noaXesshehe16:25
RoyKnagios, or rather, icinga, should be used for monitoring imho16:26
noaXessRoyK: normaly in the 3ware controller settings, after creating a raid and save the settings, a progress should come up, right?16:30
RoyKyeah16:31
noaXessstrange.. cause there is only the save configuration question, i press y, and it leaves controller config and boot process goes on16:32
noaXessmaybe check firmware if the controller..16:32
RoyKyeah, see if there are some upgrades16:32
noaXessis it possible to upgrade firmware without any OS?16:32
RoyKor downgrades :P16:32
RoyKusually firmware upgrade happens from a CD running DOS16:32
noaXess4.10.00.007 from 9.5.3 from 26.11.200916:34
noaXesshm.. ot really new..16:34
RoyKnoaXess: also, keep in mind that if you don't have battery backup on the controller, make sure you disable write cache - IIRC it's enabled by default16:35
noaXessRoyK: have BBU... and will check write cache... why disabling it?16:36
RoyKseems that's the latest16:36
RoyKnoaXess: no need to disable it with the BBU16:36
noaXessah.. sorry.. your wrote it :)16:37
RoyKnoaXess: is that the firmware version you have now?16:38
noaXessRoyK: no... can't check it.. verifying is in progress. 25%16:40
RoyKk16:41
thesheff17Does anyone know if apt-proxy will work with the partner repository? I'm getting terrible download speeds in the amazon cloud with package sun-java6-jdk16:42
