[01:14] xubuntu uses QT libraries primarily? [03:02] I need a little help, I'm new on xubuntu [03:03] I'm Windows user to be exact :) [03:05] I just installed xubuntu on my old laptop (KDS) it has Trident Cyberblade video card and it will take 640x480 resolution so it shows BIG black margen all around ti and I don't know how to install the right video driver or correct this. [03:06] Any help will be apreciate! :) [03:06] IM A NEWBIE [04:12] Greetings. Does anybody know what the minimum amount of memory needed to install Xubuntu (command-line system) is? I'm trying to put it on a laptop with 64MB of RAM but I keep running out of memory in the installer when it is loading the initial list of udebs off the CD (i.e. very early). I found a help page on the Ubuntu site and it says 64MB is the minimum and that it should work. [04:16] Foxamemnon: 64 is minimum to install from the alternative cd, 192 from the live [04:17] Foxamemnon: you won't be able to run xubuntu with 64 though [04:21] xubuntu i slow on 256 ram...starts running good at 512 [04:22] Khedron: That's what I'm doing. I'm using the Xubuntu alternate CD and selecting the "install command line system" mode (in the F4 boot menu). It boots, I select KB type, then it scans the CD, then it starts loading a bunch of default udebs for the installer to work. At this point it will run out of memory while loading one of them and the OOM killer gets working. :( [04:24] Foxamemnon: you would be better off using debian for a system that low in resources, that will install a very very minimal system [04:26] Khedron: Okay, that was my next step. Seems like it might be my only step. I just hope the Debian text installer uses less memory than the X/Ubuntu text installer. [04:27] it's the same installer, but I think the minimum for it is 32 [04:44] Anybody else have ogg video problems in firefox? I'm getting constant freeze-ups. [05:00] hi there [05:00] i need help [05:01] I just installed xubuntu 10.10 and Teamviewer [05:03] when i launch teamviewer it gives me an error, says that i need to change the X server bit depth to 24 bits [05:06] do it === cheese is now known as Guest20405 === pionar is now known as gdub === gdub is now known as pionar [09:31] can anyone tell me why installing 10.04 gives me 9.10 desktop [09:31] same theme [09:31] but is it the same os [09:32] i mean kernel version etc [09:33] maybe you either have mislabelled it or downloaded the wrong file, etc === Guest20405 is now known as cheese === `mOOse` is now known as m00se === `mOOse` is now known as m00se [18:31] * likemindead is finally going to upgrade to 10.10 today! :D [18:54] Hi everyone. Today's question. Parole Media player says "Could not initialise Xv output" [18:54] thats Parole on xubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat [19:01] Anybody here? [19:02] Yeah, but I have no idea what you're talking about :) [19:03] Someone sent me a video in an email. [19:03] Saved it, opened "Parole Media Player" on my Applications->Multimedia menu. [19:04] And opened the file (a "*.flv" file) [19:05] I see [19:05] When I click the play button, I get the popup error window "Could not initialise Xv output" with a "Close" button. [19:05] And it won't play. [19:05] That is odd [19:06] New install on a "new" (to me at least) computer. This is the first time I've tried to play a movie on this one. [19:06] I'm not sure what video driver I have here. How can I find that out? [19:07] Are you sure it's not a codec problem [19:07] It sounds like a codec problem [19:08] Actually, isn't Xv the "direct" video mode for X that allows video players direct access to the video hardware? [19:08] Is it? [19:08] Well, you learn something new everyday :) [19:09] Well, I opened a terminal and typed "xv" and hit tab, just to see what commands might start with that. [19:10] I see "xvinfo" as a choice, so I took that. [19:10] And I get [19:10] X-Video Extension version 2.2 [19:10] screen #0 [19:10] no adaptors present [19:10] Interesting [19:10] So it looks like that extension isn't working on this hardware. [19:11] Here's what you should get http://paste.ubuntu.com/516970/ [19:12] I suspect it's some kind of video hardware/driver issue. Probably something that didn't get set up properly at install time. [19:12] Probably [19:12] Yeah, it should dump a bunch of video info like yours did. [19:12] What distro did you install? [19:13] xubuntu 10.10, Maverick Meerkat [19:13] The latest and (hopefully) greatest. [19:14] Odd. It should have done all the work of installing drivers for you [19:14] Tell me about your computer [19:15] It's a Dell Inspiron 1150 [19:15] Pentium 4, 1G of RAM. [19:15] 1024x768 15" screen. It's a notebook. [19:16] I'm not sure what video chipset it has. I'm checking on specs right now. [19:17] Perhaps it's too old for a funky young distro like Maverick [19:17] Maybe. It's not that old. [19:19] This one was sold in 2005, warranty (1 year) up in May 2006. According to the Dell Website when I enter the service tag number. [19:19] Then I can't imagine why you're having so much trouble getting it to play a simple video [19:19] Have you tried playing it in mplayer? [19:19] Or VLC? [19:19] install restricted-extras [19:19] Or even Xine? [19:19] xubuntu-restricted extras [19:21] I haven't installed any other players. I did install restricted-extras at the initial installation. [19:21] Flash player works. I can play videos on youtube. [19:22] I might install totem or mplayer and try those. [19:22] could you open that .flv on firefox? [19:23] it doesn't open directly on firefox. It's the flv (the video stream), not the flash app that youtube uses to play them. [19:24] it could be bug, on fedora i can hear sound but not see anything [19:27] If I'm understanding the Dell website correctly, this thing has a NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI video chipset. [19:29] scratch that. Just downloaded the owner's manual. According to that, it's an Intel chipset [19:31] I think I'll try another video player. Which is a best "lowest common denominator" video player? mplayer? Totem? [19:32] mplayer or vlc [19:32] although I really think that I'll need to get the Xv issue fixed before any of them work. I know for a fact that Totem uses Xv. If Parole can't get that going, Totem won't work either. [19:32] OK. Let me try installing mplayer. [19:32] Be back in a few after I get it downloaded and installed. [19:57] Reporting back on the video issue. [19:58] The issue seems to be limited to Parole Media Player. [19:58] "Gnome MPlayer" and "Movie Player" (totem) work on this machine. [19:59] I guess I need to report this issue someplace. [20:00] Problem solved for today. I'll probably stick with Totem and uninstall MPlayer. [20:01] Thanks mark76 and Sysi === Thermi_ is now known as Thermi [21:49] * likemindead finally got around to a fresh install of Xubuntu 10.10 and couldn't be happier. :D [21:50] :-) [22:23] there used to be a term that had a fold option (it would leave just the title of the window, you can unfold it as needed. what terminal is this with these options. im thinking it was related to XFCE === `mOOse` is now known as m00se [22:24] I don't know that one. I use guake, which allows me to hit F12 for the terminal, F12 closes it again, but anything running in it stays going. [22:25] yeah i use that sometimes. i had a screenshot of it but cant find it atm [22:26] in xfce i can scroll on titlebar of any window and it shades [22:27] can be set up in gnome and kde too [22:27] Why not just use the shade icon? [22:28] don't want to aim [22:29] dont know what shade does and is it related to damn cant remember the name but visible effcts to use shade? [22:29] shade rolls the window up to the title bar [22:29] shade = only titlebar visible [22:29] yes that is what im looking for [22:29] i dont see an option in ngnome-term [22:29] window manager feature [22:30] Window Manager preferences, move the icon in to the + field [22:30] see settings for windows, i only remeber they suck in gnome :P [22:31] not sure where you are looking. i dont see anything [22:32] Applications -> Settings -> Xfce 4 Settings Manager -> Window Manager [22:32] if you use gnome, we don't know [22:32] first tab [22:32] Don't think you get to pick them in Gnome [22:32] Everything is preset for you [22:32] maybe with gconf-editor [22:33] but you can set that scrolling action [22:34] it's kinda hard when you know what you want [22:34] ok be beack going to xfce i hope [22:34] harder to think something else could be good too, or get used to it [22:35] One of those configuration things I really like about Xubuntu [22:35] yeah [22:36] Hey, what tools are there to handle AES 256 encrypted files ? [22:36] gpg? [22:38] charlie-tca, no, this is not a pgp encrypted file, i think [22:39] i think i found a tool, ccrypt [22:39] its in the ubuntu repos [22:41] charlie-tca: ok im in xfce. where do i find the option? [22:41] Applications -> Settings -> Xfce 4 Settings Manager -> Window Manager [22:41] first tab [22:41] button layout [22:41] hover over them to see what they are [22:42] just click shade? [22:43] move it to roght or left of title, where ever you prefer it [22:44] yeah its on right thats fine for me. now i have to see if it will work with gnome-term since i cant find a terminal option to make it "Linux Terminal" [22:44] crap [22:45] I like having the buttons I want, and where I want them [22:49] how do i remove the desktop icons? [22:49] Applications -> Settings -> Xfce 4 Settings Manager -> Desktop [22:49] Settings/Desktop/Icons [22:49] its been a long time since i used it, now im trying to set it up [22:50] remove the few by unclicking, or remove them all by setting icon type [22:50] im not seeing manager [22:51] no settings manager? [22:51] should be in the same place as where you found window manager. Just pick Desktop instead [22:52] i see xfce 4 settings, but when it opens nothing that is just "manager" they have other things like window manager [22:52] i didnt see that i dont think [22:52] You have Desktop in that ? [22:52] different settings [22:52] oh i thought it said disply [23:18] does someone have to be using the same bittorrent program as me to share files with one another? [23:19] no [23:19] bittorrent is a protocol like http (web) [23:20] my friend is using windows. how do i find his computer to start the transmission? [23:20] rick__, you dont, first you have to create a torrent, then he can download that file. [23:21] or vice versa, depends who is sharing [23:21] how do i save something as a torrent? sorry to be a pain. information overload in the forums. [23:22] if its just you two, do a ftp instead. To create a torrent you use a torrent software like transmission [23:22] open transmission, its in the internet menu [23:23] transmission is a bittorrent client [23:23] looking... [23:23] Choose File > New - then you create your torrent (file or whatever it is you want to share over bittorent network) [23:25] after you created your torrent you can email him the file or you can post it on a tracker like piratebay if you want to share the world [23:26] i can email him the torrent, and he opens it using his bittorrent software? [23:26] yep. [23:27] cool. thanks for the help. we'll try to get started. [23:27] if its just you two, but then whats the point. [23:27] he's trying to send me p90x. files are huge. [23:27] ok. [23:29] g'night.
