nykurHello! Has anyone else had problems with fsck's being run at every boot?01:00
nykurAny help would be much appreciated :-)01:01
phillwnykur: I heard of it, but fsck will not run each time unless your hard drive is dying.01:04
nykurguess it's possible, but unlikely. fairly new SSD.01:05
phillwnykur: I'll go and have dig on the forum area01:05
nykurcheers phillw01:06
phillwI've done better, got forum staffers to have a look, but it should really not be happening unless you power down your computer without using the command in lubuntu01:10
phillwnykur: some SSD's are what we call "Dead on Arrival", so this is going to be a really hard call to make.01:12
nykuryeah, well, I guess you can overwrite the cycles, but I think that's unlikely in slightly over a year, and it has been working well for all that time01:14
phillwnykur: the staffers are looking up for you, I've also asked the robot overlord to have a check for you.01:15
nykurthese fsck's started to happen after an update, so I'm leaning towards something Lubuntu is doing at boot level. my fstab's looking pretty normal though01:16
nykurthanks man01:16
phillw(01:15:29) xxxxxxxxx: I resolved the issue by booting into recovery mode and running the scan01:17
nykurit wouldn't let me, claiming the disk was mounted...??01:17
phillwnykur: that is the advice I have been given.01:17
phillwnykur: use the live cd01:18
nykurok thanks, will do. So this is a heard of issue then?01:18
phillwi've heard of it, but it is always a disk Vs fsck issue. Untill the two are happy fsck will try and run and repair the disk.01:20
nykurwell, just realized, recovery mode and livecd aren't the same, did they not say recovery mode? So that must mean they ran one despite the mount warning?01:20
phillwnykur: fsck hates to 'lose' a hard drive and will do anything to save it.01:21
nykurheeh true01:21
nykurI'm guessing the live usb will resolve any inconsistency anyway01:22
phillwnykur: that's why it was written and why you were correct in asking about it having an issue.01:22
nykurtrue story:-)01:22
nykurMany thanks for the support:-)01:23

audioHi all.10:02
bioterrorhi10:02
audioWhen using gvfs is it possible change the default location for mounts of remote shares from ~/.gvfs to a different directory?10:02
audioFor example ~/Desktop or just ~.10:03
bioterroryou can use smbfs10:04
bioterrorand mount samba shares where you want with your fstab10:04
audiobioterror: Prefer not to use fixed mounts via fstab10:05
audioBoth GIgolo and gvfs provide graphical means but create mounts in ~/.gvfs which is not very user friendly.10:06
audioGigolo seem to use gvfs and also conducts auto connection to the shares10:07
audioJust need to get gvfs/Gigolo to create them in a location of my choice10:07
bioterrorsmbfs or fusesmb is what you're looking for10:08
bioterrorgvfs works that way and there's no easy way out to make it work another way10:09
bioterrorif you want it to act like nautilus, install nautilus10:09
audioNautilus is a possibility but it is too heavyweight10:10
audioThe only other idea I had was to create a script to create softlinks to the desired location when the remote shares are contacted.10:11
audioBut scripting is not my best ability.10:12
audioAre there any scripting guru's around willing to help get me started with such a script?  I envisage it something like - Wait until directories appear in ~/.gvfs - Create a list of the directories - Feed the list to a for loop - The loop creates a softlink for each entry in list.10:26
bioterrormake a symlink? :D10:27
audioyes that's what I meant by softlink10:27
audiooops.10:28
tammehi12:45
tammeis it normal that lubuntu logs me out when I send my laptop to suspend mode?12:46
hyperairusually when that happens, it means X has crashed.12:47
hyperairi.e. crappy graphics driver and you're lucky it even resumed12:47
tammeok12:47
tammeis there a simple way to fix this12:48
tamme?12:48
hyperairnope =p12:53
hyperairwell there is, really.12:53
hyperairthe simplest way... is to not use a crap gpu12:53
bioterrordoes it really log you out12:53
bioterrornormal behaviour is that it locks the screen12:53
hyperairbioterror: if X crashes, you're logged out.12:54
tammeI'm using a T23 with a S3 Inc. SuperSavage IX/C SDR12:55
hyperairO_o12:57
tammeyes I know its old ;)12:59
bioterrorit has a com port13:00
bioterrorI accept it! ;D13:00
tammeyes :D13:02
tammei think I've got a solution https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=776713:14
ubot5bugzilla.kernel.org bug 7767 in Video(DRI - non Intel) "No hardware rendering for "SuperSavage/IXC 64" and "Xorg 7.2 RC3"" [Normal,Closed: code_fix]13:14
head_victim620mb down, not long now.13:27
bioterror:)13:27
head_victimI think some people from the list started downloading it as well as the speed really has dropped off.13:28
bioterror:)13:31
head_victimAh well I'll leave it overnight and have a go in the morning13:37
head_victimSee you all later13:37
audioszczur: Are you around?14:56
audioszczur: Do you know if Lubuntu has a file that is the equivalent of /etc/rc.local that is run on each shutdown?14:56
bioterroractually not14:56
bioterrorif I remember right14:57
audiobioterror: by "actually not" do you mean that there is no equivalent to /etc/rc.local?14:58
szczuraudio, every ubuntu has /etc/rc.local file15:05
szczurat least mine has one15:05
szczurso you should have on etoo15:05
audioszczur: I was meaning the functional equivalent of /etc/rc.local which is run on each logoff/shutdown.15:06
szczurypu can add acripts to the /etc/rc<runlevel>.d folders15:08
szczurhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runlevel#Linux15:08
szczursoo /etc/rc0.d is the folder with the set of scripts run while your PC is going to shut down15:09
audioszczur: Is that also used for logoff rather than shutdown?15:11
szczurnaah15:11
szczurfor log off... (gimme sec15:12
szczuryou can edit files located in /etc/lxdm called PostLogin, PostLogout, PreLogin, PreReboot and PreShutdown15:13
szczuri think it is self explainable15:13
szczurevery file is the bash script which by default does nothing15:14
szczurbut you can add something to them15:14
szczurszczur@szczur:/etc/lxdm$ cat PostLogin15:15
szczur#!/bin/sh15:15
szczur#15:15
szczur# Note: this is a sample and will not be run as is.15:15
audioThat sounds good. I'll investigate.  Thanks for the steer.15:15

djsI was just on 10.04 and it didn't have Update Manager? Installing 10.10 and I see it's there.21:26
djsNice logo for launching main menu from the panel too21:27
phillwdjs: The addition of update manager was a tortured decision, as it uses up precious resources. But it was finally decided that we do need it.21:29
phillwit was causing too many support enquiries not to have it on.21:30
phillwdjs: glad you're enjoying lubuntu :)21:30
djsThanks for the info21:30

andriiHey22:28
andriiAnybody there?22:28
kosaidpohello22:28
phillwwb andrii22:29
andriiI have a slight problem with my network. This occurred with both lubuntu and windows so I thought I might allow myself to post here but ATM I only have windows.22:29
andriiThanks phillw :)22:29
phillwdid you add the gvfs-backends package?22:29
andriiWell turns out this problem is still after reformatting to windows.22:30
andriiThe thing is, this only concerns my PC, it's like that specific device doesn't have access to the router.22:30
andriiThe router doesn't even recognize it as a device, it behaves just as the cable isn't connected. But is is, and they work (tested numerous times with other devices). Both OS' also identified the network device itself in the computer and the drivers are installed.22:31
andriiAm I asking in the wrong channel? :p22:32
phillwandrii: the two guys who have been working on networking issues are both off; I'm sorry that I cannot really help. I do know that for pcmanfm to do network stuff you need to add gvfs-backend.... I'll go look it up for you.22:34
andriiWell atm I haven't got Lubuntu installed.22:34
andriiI tried formatting the disk and tried windows instead.22:34
andriiSeems it's a shared problem.22:34
phillwandrii: I suspect that is a general issue on your computer / the kernel , #ubuntu-beginners may be more able to help, else #ubuntu (that channel is real busy).22:35
andriiAllright. I'll see what I can do. THanks :))22:36
phillwthe forum area is also a great place to post, http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=336 is the network area22:37
phillwthose people will be better able to help you.22:37
andriiUhhhhhhhhhh22:54
andriiI found the weirded solution ever!22:54
andriiweirdest*22:54
andriiTurn off computer, unplug ethernet cable and power cable. Go away from computer for 30 seconds and come back and replug your stuff and boot.22:54
andriiWorked like a charm.22:54
andriiI had restarted router, power cycled router, restarted computer etc etc.22:55
phillwandrii: sometimes a cup of tea works wonderfully :)22:57
andriihaha23:04
andriiTruu23:04
phillwandrii: daft as it sounds, I'm currently doing support on the off-topic area, just reassuring a nervous user. I'm not ignoring you and feel to pop in to #lubuntu-offtopic23:10
head_victimphillw: installing 10.10 alternate now23:12
MonthOLDpicklewhat is the difference between desktop and alternate?23:28
mark76Alternate is for servers23:29
head_victimAlternate doesn't have Ubuquity installer, it's text only23:32
head_victimSo it's easier to install on lower spec'ed computers.23:32
head_victimmark76: there are specific server versions and alternate can be used for servers but it's main focus is on desktop installations.23:32
lontrahi how can i enable full font hinting in lubuntu?23:38
head_victimlontra: there is currently no way to do it via a gui menu23:42
head_victimlontra: http://pinoy-computing-tips.blogspot.com/2010/05/how-to-enable-subpixel-font-rendering.html explains how to do it for 10.04 and should work ok with 10.10 as well23:42
lontrahead_victim, how can i do it via a terminal?23:42
lontraok23:42
head_victimGood question though, I hadn't thought of that myself.23:43
lontrafonts are so fuzzy for me w/o full font hinting23:44
lontraok brb23:49
lontradidn't work :(23:51
head_victimHm23:56
phillwhiyas gilir seems the alternate cd is working well, and while head_victim is here, he's one of the new Lubuntueers / UBT people and is also familiar with wiki, so is going to post the notes up for it :)23:58
