josuchavok, so can someone help me, here's what I have: I need to make libfltk1.1_1.1.9-4_i386.deb available to a certain executable. I found the file, but don't know what to do next04:37
aveilleuxjosuchav: Why would you need to make the package file available to another executable?04:39
josuchavIt's kind of a long story, but in short, I'm tryin to get xs++ running on my laptop to unbrand my phone. If I run "sudo thunar" and double click the executable, the terminal asks for that file04:42
josuchavthe site tells me I need it too04:42
aveilleuxjosuchav: ...thunar? Are you in Xubuntu?04:43
josuchavyes04:43
josuchavis that ok04:43
josuchavI'm really just now steppin into the terminal and away from the Ubuntu software center04:45
josuchavso it's been quite the learnin experience for me04:45
aveilleuxjosuchav: If you need to install the .deb file, you can just run sudo dpkg -i libfltk1.1_1.1.9-4_i386.deb04:46
josuchavaveilleux: you think this is a bad idea though?04:47
aveilleuxjosuchav: I just don't understand what you're trying to do.04:47
aveilleuxjosuchav: I will be stepping out in a moment, be back in a bit04:48
josuchavaveilleux: ok04:48
josuchavi got it to work.. thanks04:59
shahanproblem on installing .deb on Maverick. the Software Center opens07:53

shahanaveilleux: I have no GDebi installed07:55
aveilleuxpffffwhaaat07:55
aveilleuxIs it not included in the default install?07:55
shahanaveilleux: sudo apt-get install gdebi does not work07:57
shahanaveilleux: it says "sudo dpkg -i filename.deb"07:57
shahanaveilleux: sorry07:57

shahanaveilleux: installing from software center07:59
shahanaveilleux: tnx... :)08:01
RambleTambleHi. What is the difference between .deb and .rpm? Which package should i download?09:19
andrew_46RambleTamble: Ubuntu does not normally use .rpm packages, normally .deb. Which software are you lookin at?09:20
andrew_46g09:21
RambleTambleopenoffice09:21
andrew_46oic09:21
andrew_46RambleTamble: Not keen on the repository version?09:21
RambleTambleandrew_46: I've just thought about it) and can I update it via bash? sudo apt-get update openoffice - something like that?09:23
andrew_46RambleTamble: Normally if you have openoffice installed a new version in the Ubuntu Repository will be downloaded in the course of a routine update09:24
andrew_46That is: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade09:24
andrew_46But IMHO differences between close OpenOffice versions is not that great anyway :)09:25
andrew_46Others will disagree09:25
RambleTambleandrew_46: thanks. hmm anyway after update&upgrade it still 3.2.0 and lastest release is 3.2.1. It means that lastest release not immediately comes to repository?09:29
andrew_46RambleTamble: No, this depends on when the Ubuntu/Debian packagers prepare the package and release it to the Ubuntu Repository09:30
RambleTambleandrew_46: got it thanks09:33
andrew_46RambleTamble: Less of a problem with Openoffice than programs like FFmpeg and MPlayer which date very quickly :(09:34
JoeMaverickSettRambleTamble: or you could upgrade it using this ppa https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs/+archive/ppa09:35
JoeMaverickSettah, wait, i think this one would be better, RambleTamble.09:37
JoeMaverickSettRambleTamble: http://www.webupd8.org/2010/08/openoffice-321-available-in-ubuntu-1004.html09:38
andrew_46RambleTamble: You are keen for the newest version?09:39
RambleTambleandrew_46: yep..09:39
andrew_46RambleTamble: As JoeMaverickSett has mentioned a PPA might be the answer, but I have not personally tested the scribblers one :(09:46
andrew_46You are running Maverick?09:48
RambleTambleI've just updated it using second link, it's 3.2.1 now :)09:49
andrew_46RambleTamble: Too easy :)09:50
JoeMaverickSettlol.09:50

eaerthmight i be able to trouble someone with a little of their time troubleshooting a bug i'm having?11:54
slidinghorneaerth:  I'm no expert, but I'm more than happy to try!11:55
eaerthslidinghorn: thanks! a response was all i was even looking for hahahaha11:55
slidinghorneaerth:  well then, that was easy!  lol11:56
eaerthslidinghorn: i'm running maverick and bsically one in ten times when i move my windows the screen just goes black ;\11:56
slidinghorneaerth:  no blinking cursor or anything, just black?11:57
eaerthyeah, just black... i googled the heck out of this and i did find a few cases of it happening to people on boot and i guess they had flashing cursors... but mine is well after boot. sometimes it rarely happens but it's prominently when moving a window around the desktop. and as far as i can tell everything is still running because if i had music playing it's still on...11:59
slidinghornis it any specific window?  or just any one?12:00
eaerthany one.12:00
slidinghornhmm...let me do some digging and see if I can find anything12:00
eaerththanks so much! :D12:00
slidinghornwhat are your specs?  (resources, video card, etc)12:01
eaerthat first i could deal with it, just had to shut down but it's gotten so irritating lately...12:01
eaerthk my video card is ati radeon uhhhmm... xpress 200M as far as resources goes what are you referring to?12:01
eaerthlike cpu/ram?12:02
slidinghornboth, and is this a laptop/desktop?  brand?  also, are you running desktop or netbook edition?12:03
eaerthyeah, laptop acer aspire 5100, running the desktop edition i'm pretty sure, the 32bit version.12:03
slidinghornk12:04
eaerthcpu is 1.6ghz and i'm pretty sure i have two 512mb ram cards.12:04
eaerthmy processor is 64bit but honestly, with the low amount of ram i have i doubt i'd even notice the fragment of a second difference in speed if i used the 64bit version of ubuntu...12:05
eaerthi had lucid for a short amount of time before doing a clean install of maverick and never had this problem. ;\12:06
eaerthhmmm... are you familiar at all with any driver stuff associated with xorg edgers? i think it was called gallium or something... i can't remember the name or i'd try to get rid of it and see if that helps.12:07
slidinghornwell Lucid is likely to be more stable, as it's an LTS (long term support) release -- the in-between releases (like Maverick) are known to be a bit more buggy12:08
eaerthsee i didn't know maverick was an in between release! what a bummer... some perfect ten this turned out to be ;S12:09
eaerthhonestly the only reason i even upgraded was because i tried getting this music app guayadeque and it wouldn't load, it jsut showed the splash and then nothing but it's in maverick's repo so i said why not try the new version anyway?12:11
slidinghornah, yes...every 2 years (I believe) they release an LTS and then the others are kind of like tinker toys to experiment for the next LTS (that's the way I tend to look at it)12:11
eaerththose sick perverts!12:11
eaerthhahaha jk12:12
slidinghornlol12:12
eaerthyeah this is a real bummer...12:12
eaerthi have a few more bugs but this one is the most annoying ;\12:12
eaerthis it possible to downgrade back to lucid without losing my files?12:13
bioterrorI suggest downgrade only by fresh installation12:13
eaerthyeah.....12:13
slidinghornas far as I'm aware, downgrading isn't supported...I'd back up the files & install freash12:13
slidinghornfresh*12:13
eaerthi figured that and was hoping by a long shot maybe i was wrong hahaha12:14
eaerthmy friend took his external hdd back so now i'm stuck i think.12:14
bioterrorcopy your ~/ to safe and reinstall12:14
eaerth~/ ?12:14
eaerthhome folder?12:14
bioterroryeah12:14
eaerthgotcha12:14
bioterrorthere no place like ~ or 127.0.0.1 ;)12:14
eaerthhahaha, forreal...12:15
eaerthis there perhaps a xorg irc channel? ;S12:15
eaerthi went to opengl but apparently it's only for app developers and one of the guys there was a jerkface.12:16
bioterror:D12:16
eaerthhahahahaha12:16
slidinghornlol @ jerkface...that's what my gf calls me :-P12:17
eaerthhahaha nice12:17
eaerthyeah i'm trying not to upset any bots with my potty mouth. ;S12:18
eaerthhmmmm... what about a way of reverting maverick back to the way it was when i first installed it without losing files? ;S12:21

ehcahHello.  Does anyone have any experience with Cedega?18:31
aveilleuxehcah: I have some; not a lot, and not recent18:31
ehcahaveileux:  Is it specifically for Gaming?  Or, like "wine", can I install a Windows Based Home Design Suite software?18:32
slidinghornehcah:  it's used to run a lot of windows programs...check out the appdb18:33
slidinghorn!appdb | ehcah18:33
ubot2ehcah: The Wine Application DB is a database of applications and help for !Windows programs that run under !WINE: http://appdb.winehq.org - Join #winehq for application help18:33
ehcahslidinghorn:  My program, "Architectural Studio 5000" is not on their list.  I have it running under wine, but it is very slow.  It runs better under my Windows 7 Virtual OS.18:35
slidinghornehcah:  some apps run better virtually than in wine...just have to find the right way to do it18:35
aveilleuxehcah: I do not recommend Cedega. It is proprietary and uses outdated WINE code.18:35
aveilleuxehcah: It's basically proprietary WINE.18:36
ehcahslidinghorn:  is there any way to modify how wine treats my app?18:36
ehcahaveilleux:  It's also $6 a month with no guarantees of working...18:36
aveilleuxehcah: That too.18:36
ehcahaveilleux:  If wine is running my program. Is there any way to modify wine to run it cleaner?18:37
slidinghornehcah:  dont know...try checking out #winehq -- that's the official wine support channel18:37
ehcahslidinghorn:  I asked a few times between last night and this morning.  No answers...18:37
aveilleuxehcah: What version are you running? You could try updating to the dev version18:38
ehcahaveilleux: 1.2.118:38
aveilleuxehcah: Try updating to 1.3.*, the development version. It might help performance a little.18:39
ehcahIs that a matter of updating my sources.list to a ... nightly-build?18:40
aveilleuxehcah: add the PPA, then uninstall wine1.2 and install wine1.318:41
aveilleuxehcah: http://www.winehq.org/download/deb18:41
ehcahaveilleux:  Will I have to reinstall all the windows apps I have been using?18:42
