[21:05] kusi: You need to make the .desktop explictly executable in KDE4 so people don't e-mail viruses [21:08] dasKreech, Well that's fair enough, although being Canonical I'm sure they'll be working toward eliminating choice rather than preserving it :> In either case I'll have to return shortly, time to start up KDE! === smooph1 is now known as smooph [21:13] can anyone tell me why there is a greyed out show terminal button on the upgrade dialog? [21:13] i mean why even have it if its greyed out? [21:23] Hey i want to openup a port in kubuntu ... that seems to be closed by default ... i don't have a firewall ... how can i do that ? [21:28] ? [21:29] smooph: kuubntu's firewall is disabled by default... all ports should be open [21:29] !ufw [21:29] Ubuntu, like any other Linux distribution, has firewall capabilities built-in. The firewall is managed using the 'ufw' command - see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UFW | An alternative to ufw is the 'iptables' command - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/IptablesHowTo | GUI frontends such as Firestarter/Gufw (Gnome) or Guarddog (KDE) also exist. [21:30] James147: thats what i thought but when i do a netstat -la I can see that port 6546 is LISTEN but when nmaping its not there [21:32] uppps even though i cannot see it, it still works ... is telnet invisible? [21:36] whats the text editor for KDE4 called? :$ [21:36] kate [21:36] thanks [21:36] youre welcome [21:42] hello :> well kde seems to be working out great so far but i've encountered one problem...i use evolution for e-mails and other contacts but when i start it, plasma-desktop segfaults :< [21:45] Weird... Gtk under kde4 is not using KDE's gtkrc. [21:47] so everything locked up during the dist-upgrade. how do i restart it? [21:47] And, how are you supposed to log out? [21:48] DanaG: kmenu > leave > logout or alt+F2 > type "logout" [21:48] Hello all [21:48] Ah. Plasma-netbook doesn't have an obvious logout. [21:49] ah, netbook :) if i remember right, one of the widgets in the panel will logout you [21:50] if i was doing a dist-upgrade and it locked up how do i restart the upgrade? [21:53] For a pen tablet PC, KDE's bulkiness (pixels, not RAM) helps. [21:54] Or more correctly, Oxygen is bulky. [22:01] Hmm, it still won't use my Gtk theme. [22:03] Hi all, i am kinda new to Kubuntu and do not even know if I am asking this in the right forum - but can someone please help me set up a NFS mapping of a NAS server in Kubuntu? :s [22:08] Argh! I even copied the dang qtcurve.sh.... Still doesn't work! === mren is now known as mren|off [22:12] rikard: Hallo [22:12] !nfs [22:12] nfs is the network file system. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo for information on installing and configuring NFS. [22:13] dasKreech: yes, i have been looking at it but I still doesnt get it to work [22:15] In my NAS (Synology DS207+) the only settings I can make is; Hostname, R/RW and Root squash [22:15] then I edit my /etc/fstab accordingly in Kubuntu terminal [22:16] after I have made the directories [22:16] so in my case I have made a folder (in Kubuntu) called /media/video/ [22:18] in fstab I have written a line like this: 192.168.1.100:/video /media/video nfs _netdev,auto,user 0 0 [22:19] still my /media/video shows up empty on my Kubuntu client [22:20] I thought that NFS was the way to go when using Linux...? [22:23] Tryin' something, BRB [22:25] rikard: did you try sudo mount -a ? [22:25] yes [22:32] dasKreech: It works if I in the terminal just write: sudo mount 192.168.1.100:/Volume1/video /media/video [22:32] but if I write it in the fstab it does not work... [22:33] and shouldnt I write any options and stuff in the fstab? [22:37] rikard : I put "192.168.1.10:/nfs/public /media/STORAGE/public nfs rw,intr, soft 0 0" in my fstab and nfs works fine [22:41] Flutiju: is "rw,intr, soft 0 0" necessary and what do they do? [22:41] isnt that set on the server already? [22:41] why do I have to write that in the clients fstab? [22:42] On the server you "allow rw" on the folder, but when you mount you have to tell how do you want to mount [22:42] (Here you wanna mount with the rw rigths) [22:43] (Well, if you want of course) [22:57] ... [22:57] My top part of the window is gone... [22:57] Brb... [23:02] I just installed kubuntu 10.4 from the standard .iso, but it didn't install either lilo nor grub, so it won't boot (!). I noticed when mounting the partition again from the livecd... no lilo, no grub, what am I missing? [23:03] ah! found grub-pc. Can't find config files though. [23:05] !grub2 [23:05] GRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager since Ubuntu 9.10. For more information and troubleshooting for GRUB2 please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 [23:06] yep, thx, found docu. still no idea why a fresh install didn't boot, but let's see... [23:19] since kubuntu 10.10, my system only boots with a text logo [23:19] not that it's a big issue or anything [23:19] i'm just curious what happened there [23:19] plymouth theme is still set to kubuntu logo [23:23] is there a tool like startup-manager for kde? [23:31] muesli: http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/plymouth did work for me (german) [23:31] dont think there is a kde frontend already...
