SilasleI get this error message when booting Xubuntu (i have checked the md5 of the iso): http://paste.ubuntu.com/520888/18:30
Sysihow you're trying to boot?18:31
SilasleLive cd18:32
Sysiit fails before anything happens?18:32
SilasleI come to the screen where i can choose language and if i want to test live/install ..., And then if i choose something i get the boot splash for maybe 4 min, and then the message comes18:34
Sysihave you cheked cd from that menu?18:35
SilasleYes18:35
SilasleSame result18:35
SilasleBtw, i dont know if the 2 last messages appear if i choose to try it live, they appeared an bit later when checking the cd.18:36
SilasleThe crazy thing is that the cd was running at another computer before, whitout problems.18:38
Sysiare you sure that cd drive is working?18:39
SilasleI can see the files now on suse (9.3)18:40
SilasleBut i cant promise that it is working perfectly.18:41
SilasleAnd i think this computer is to old to boot from an usb-stick.18:42
SilasleCan linux still be installed whit floppys?18:48
Anom01ysorry kid typing18:59
linux-geek? any no if xubuntu 10.10 can run off 256 in ram or is that the old one that can19:31
abehad701i'm new to xubuntu. just installed on a toshiba portege r100. trying to change my display to 1024x768 but there is no option for anythign greater than 800x600. i've been searching the web for hours trying to find the answer and nothign seems to work. my biggest problem is that the most common solution involves editing xorg.conf, which i don't have (and i don't think is used anymore if i understand correctly). does anyone know how i can fix this? my graphic21:25
abehad701s card is a trident cyberblade xp4m3221:25
andaiHi23:00
andaiI'm on Ubuntu 10.04, wanna switch to 10.10 but i also wanna switch to Xubuntu23:01
andaifastest way to do this?23:01
andaiinstall xubuntu-desktop then upgrade? :P23:01
MaximumResultsandai, that should work.  You might want to uninstall ubuntu-desktop first, then install xubuntu-desktop, then upgrade.23:02
MaximumResultsI'm on a relatively fresh install of 10.10,23:02
Sysitotal reinstall would be fastest23:02
MaximumResultsJust got my wireless adapter for this old laptop, and I'm trying to get it working.23:03
MaximumResultsAnyone been through this?23:03
andaiMaximumResults: Will uninstalling ubuntu-desktop have any side-effects i might want to take into account?23:04
MaximumResultsConfiguration, Dell Inspiron 1150,   Network card identifies itself like this: $ sudo lspci | grep -i wireless23:04
MaximumResults02:02.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG [Calexico2] Network Connection (rev 05)23:04
MaximumResultsandai,   I suspect you'll lose some of your desktop settings.  I haven't done this before.23:04
andaialright thanks :)23:04
Sysiandai: shouldn't, but you are a moment without desktop if you remove it before installing xfce23:04
MaximumResultsBut I have read a few places online, and the recipe seems to be sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop; sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop.23:05
andaiSysi: Yeah. I'm guessing it won't let me remove it while running GDM? :P23:05
MaximumResultsYeah, you definitely want to be out of the GUI when you do those.23:05
Sysiupdate would be fastest without any desktop23:06
Sysiand if you in any case install xfce desktop separately, why do it twice.. (updating)23:07
MaximumResultsAny clues on this network adapter?23:07
Sysigoogle?23:07
MaximumResultsYeah, I've been looking.23:08
Sysii'd boot it connected and then watch networkmanager23:08
MaximumResultsWireless on laptops always seems problematic for Linux.   I've done the Broadcom ones on my HP laptops before.23:08
Sysihotplug should work though23:08
MaximumResultsIt's an internal mini-pci card.   I shut down, installed the card, then booted up.23:09
Sysibroadcoms are ones with only restricted drivers? my wireless have almost always worked out of box23:09
Sysido you have wireles enabled?23:10
MaximumResultsMy network manager still has "Wireless Networks - wireless is disabled"23:10
MaximumResultsand when I right click, "enable wireless" is grayed out and disabled.23:10
MaximumResultsSo I can't click on it and get it enabled.23:10
MaximumResultsDuh,   I guess I should reboot and make sure that it's enabled in the setup.   I might have it turned off in the BIOS setup.23:12
andai1) How do i get to CLI? (Ctrl+Alt+1 is still in X right?)23:12
andai2) < sudo apt-get dist-upgrade > should do it? Or should i do regular update too, first?23:12
MaximumResultsAlthough if this adapter was totally turned off, I wouldn't see it in lspci, would i?23:13
andai3) Will < remove ubuntu-desktop > also remove Firefox (more specifically, its user settings)?23:13
MaximumResultsandai,  I don't think it should remove the firefox settings.23:14
andaithanks23:14
MaximumResultsYou might want to make a backup copy of all your hidden directories off your home directories.23:14
MaximumResults.mozilla or .firefox or something like that has all the firefox related settings in it.23:14
SysiC A F1 is without X11, then sudo -s ; service gdm stop ; do-release-upgrade (-d)23:14
Sysinothing should remove anything in you home folder23:15
Sysi*your23:15
andaialright, thank you :)23:15
Sysiremoving just ubuntu-desktop doesn't necessarily work23:16
Sysi!purexfce23:16
ubottuIf you want to remove all !KDE and !Gnome packages and have a default !Xubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce »23:16
andaimetapackage right?23:16
Sysithat23:17
Sysiaptitude might does it right23:17
MaximumResultsBye all,  I'm going to check my setup and make sure this wireless card is actually enabled in the BIOS setup.23:17
andaiSysi haha wow, how do i paste that into tty23:18
andaishould i save it to a .sh file then run that23:18
andaictrl + alt + F1  |  sudo -s  |  service gdm stop  |  ./ubuntu-remove.sh  |  apt-get install xubuntu-desktop23:19
Sysi.sh is propably easiest23:20
andaioh wait, sudo apt-get dist-upgrade after removing ubuntu packages23:20
Sysidist-upgrade isn't enough23:20
andaifor what/23:20
Sysiit doesn't change repositories23:20
andaiXubuntu has different ones??23:21
Sysido-release-upgrade, maybe with -d23:21
andaiohh23:21
Sysi10.04 and 10.10 have different23:21
andaiof couse23:21
andaictrl + alt + F1  |  sudo -s  |  service gdm stop  |  ./ubuntu-remove.sh  |  do-release-upgrade -d  |  apt-get install xubuntu-desktop23:21
andaican i put this all in a script, or are reboots required in between23:23
andai( My connection is slow and i'd rather not sit here for 2 hours waiting for this to finish :P )23:23
andaior is a dist upgrade much faster without ubuntu-desktop stuff installed?23:26
Sysi#!/bin/bash <br> sudo -s && chmod a+x ubuntu-remove.sh && ./ubuntu-remove.sh && do-release-upgrade -d && apt-get install xubuntu-desktop && reboot23:26
Sysiubuntu desktop adds a lot of downloading and reinstalling at least23:27
andaiwhat's chmod a do?23:28
Sysilets you run that script23:29
MaximumResults<---  Connected by wireless.   I feel foolish.  I was asking for help, but I had the wireless card disabled in BIOS23:29
andaii thought that was just +x23:29
Sysia means adding it for all23:29
Sysiidk what just +x does23:30
