KimLaRouxAh, technology... I forgot about those00:22
wilhartthere should be some kindo setting00:22
KimLaRouxwell, I know there's a way in nvidia panel under windows to setup one out as pure video; the video from any player in any screen is piped through the tv-out00:23
KimLaRouxI'd be amazed if such a feat was feasible under linux00:24

seawingHello, I have done a fresh install of kubuntu 10.10 and have been experiencing troubles.  Programs open slowly, more than three porcesses running at once and it grinds to a halt,  internet connection on Firefox and Opera work sometimes and sometimes not both wireless and ethernet, Very slow to switch between windows, etc.  On the suggestion of someone here, I reinstalled KDE with no noticable effect.  I have tried creating a new user,04:26
seawing nothing.  Do I need to just burn a new disk and start from scratch?  I can't really afford to have my laptop down any longer.04:26
Muldiesdoes anyone know how to get an apple bluetooth keyboard/magic mouse to work under 10.10? the installer works fine, and if i boot linux with safe mode and drop to a shell, the keyboard works, but on normal boot, at the kdm login screen, neither device will work. so i'm guessing something to do with whatever bluetooth manager kde is using is screwing up the pairing or omsething04:28
seawingI guess I'll try back later.04:41
jonbethi all..04:43
jonbetdoes anybody know why does alsa-driver 1.0.23 is newer than 1.0.9..?04:45
westyvwor are you here seawing?05:07
Balsaqgood morning kubuntites05:08
westyvwi started working on fixing my overclocking problems last night anyone here familiar with cpu frequency adjustment on Kubuntu?05:08
BalsaqUnfortunately, CPU frequency scaling can currently only be monitored on Linux machines that have support in the kernel.05:10
westyvwi have suppot, and thats acutally the problem05:10
Balsaqexplain05:11
westyvwprocessor is overclocked at 3.605:11
westyvwcpu reports capabilities that are put into the stepping05:11
westyvwKubuntu obeys stepping and runs max at 3.005:12
westyvwdmidecode -t processor shows tru speed, while cat  /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_max_freq05:12
westyvwshow stepping speed05:12
westyvwi need to know what the governor is for Kubuntu so I can get it to either quit interfering or manipulate it05:13
BalsaqInstall cpufreq-selector with SUID root05:13
westyvwbeing a part of the cpufreq utils package i would imagine?05:15
BalsaqIn your Ubuntu05:17
Balsaq, you can easily switch your CPU frequency via the CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor Gnome-applets.05:17
Balsaqhttp://maketecheasier.com/how-to-control-your-cpu-frequency-in-ubuntu/2009/04/1005:17
westyvwlol gnome applet it KDE?05:18
Balsaqget it going in gnome desktop then instal lkde after the fact?05:18
westyvwand no it would not work, because the max the applet will allow is set in the  /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_max_freq05:18
Balsaqeh05:19
westyvwnow i could echo into the max frew05:19
westyvwfreq05:19
westyvwthe cpufreutils do not work as their is no user space05:19
westyvwpreviosuly I would disable cpu throttling in Debian Sid and that was good enough05:19
moetunesdo you have the file   /etc/con.d/cpufreq   ?05:21
moetunesdo you have the file   /etc/conf.d/cpufreq   ?05:21
westyvwno05:21
Balsaqi see05:22
westyvwi would have to add the cpufreq deamon i believe. but i dont want it to conflict with the current cpu manager (which is working BTW)05:23
westyvwcould try it anyway....05:24
westyvwlol now it jumped to 3 GHZ and stays there05:24
Balsaqi wonder if i can move my 3.4HT to 3.6 or higher?05:25
westyvwwhats HT?05:25
Balsaqhyper threading05:25
westyvwoh i see05:25
Balsaqin a way its like an early dual core05:25
westyvwset cpu overclock in bios05:26
Balsaqnice fat one05:26
westyvwthen get it to work in the machine05:26
Balsaqi wonder if its easier to tweak fsb and the ram05:26
westyvwmine is a late run of my processor, so intel was getting perfect cores, but making them different to have different price points05:26
westyvwthat way i knowmine is a underclocked 3.605:27
westyvwso i should run it at 3.605:27
westyvwand have for years05:27
Balsaqnot sure if the prescotts were like that or not05:27
Balsaqbut its blazing fast wit h4 gigs of ddr205:27
westyvwsweet. i gotta reboot BRB05:27

westyvwis Kubuntu using apt or aptitude?05:33
westyvwdang need to reboot again! purged files05:34
frogonwheelswestyvw: aptitude is (like all the debian/ubuntu package managers) just a wrapper around apt05:39
westyvwfrogonwheels: once you aptitude you dont go back05:39
westyvwfrogonwheels: seriously, if a system is set up with aptiture you dont switch back to apt, you need to know05:40
frogonwheelswestyvw: I dunno why - I use apt-get install when I need to - but generally use aptitude for upgrading stuff05:41
westyvwah crap i gotta get higher permissions then sudo to echo to /sys/devices05:44
westyvwnow i gotta set up a root user05:44
westyvwunless someone can tell me another way05:44
frogonwheelswestyvw: sudo -s   ?05:44
westyvwpermission denied05:45
frogonwheels.. just sudo -s05:45
westyvwAH!05:45
westyvwthanks05:45
frogonwheelsnp05:45
westyvwi didnt know you could do that05:45
frogonwheels:)05:45
westyvwACK! still permission denied!05:46
frogonwheelswestyvw: presumably you're echoing to things you shouldn't be05:46
westyvwUNIX was not designed to stop you from doing stupid things, because that would also stop you from doing clever things. -- Doug Gwyn05:47
frogonwheelswestyvw: ok - but we're talking /sys  so it's a pseudo filesystem - so sometimes you just can't do things in there!05:48
westyvwfrogonwheels: yeah i know. I just want to echo in a new maxfrequency05:48
frogonwheelswestyvw: :) well obviously there's no feedback from the maxfrequency to actaully doing a system change05:49
westyvwthis is a fresh install i am messing with it to find the answer then reinstall anyways, so it should be good05:49
westyvwhttp://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_make_use_of_Dynamic_Frequency_Scaling05:49
frogonwheelsso you're  using scaling_setspeed  ??   looks like this requires some kernel options enabled (guses they should be tho)05:51

=== acidburn is now known as Guest6208
frogonwheelswestyvw: did you set your governor to userspace ?06:12
westyvwno not yet06:12

westyvwok i will edit sys.conf06:13

amichairsresu: I don't (FF is quite customizable, so mine might look different in any case)10:15
sresuamichair: No able to understand why it became dull10:15
Ced_sresu: Ubuntu, but the problem is not gnome or KDE related10:16
sresuCed_: For DNS you must contact your ISP, I suppose10:17
amichairsresu: my vlc as of a recent upgrade shows the construction cone in the middle of the video screen when not playing (it used to be just black). but I think it's all in the configuration somewhere.10:17
sresuamichair: Yeah, I will find that out..10:17
Ced_sresu: No, we have a local DNS server, which we can ping on IP, but not on hostname, we can however, nslookup the IP on the hostname, which makes no sense10:17
sresuamichair: But, what about mozilla?10:17
Ced_Even Reverse lookup works10:17
amichairsresu: I can't tell how it looked like before the change in your case, so hard to say10:18

amichairyuvankumar: I used Thunderbird on windows back in the day, and now use it in kubuntu. I never used them both concurrently to access the same local mailbox, though. if you're using e.g. IMAP, it should be ok.10:54
amichairnoaXess: maybe a rogue recursive chmod at some point caused the problems?10:55
yuvankumarthx guys, yeah...was wondering how i could set it up so that it can be shared from linux and windows10:55
noaXessamichair: don't know... the customer is not familiar with this.. hm..10:55
noaXessyuvankumar: don't do that.. cuase different filesystem types and permissions...10:56
amichairyuvankumar: depends on how your mail is set up. IMAP or gmail or similar mail configuration which can leave the mail on the server, is probably the easiest and safest solution10:56
amichairyuvankumar: although theoretically it should be possible to put a local mail directory on the windows/NTFS side and access it also from linux... but you should make a backup and/or test it a bunch to make sure it's a stable configuration10:57
noaXessamichair: thunderbird solved.. was a mail-server imap problem.. mailbox quota ;).. informed the customer..10:58
yuvankumari'll setup thunderbird on kubuntu first, and see if i can get it to work from windows10:58
yuvankumarthx for the advice guys!10:58
amichairnoaXess: that's 2 for 2 for you! ;-)10:58
amichairyuvankumar: windows will not be able to access ext2/3/4 partitions (most common in linux) out of the box10:59
amichairyuvankumar: but k/ubuntu can access NTFS with no problem11:00
yuvankumarthats true, forgot abt that11:00
amichairso it's simpler to put shared stuff on the NTFS side11:00
noaXessamichair: yeah.. bbs.. lunchtime..11:00
amichairyuvankumar: (but you can still start playing around on the linux side, just configure the data files to be on the NTFS drive somewhere)11:01

LjLPici: a metalink is something that includes information about servers (and torrents) from which to download something. it can be used by software such as "aria2" (which i recommend, always wondered why it wasn't being given in #ubuntu-release-party). http://metalinker.org - metalinks are always on releases.ubuntu.com12:52
