BeanLiteibuclaw ... just wanted to make sure you aren't suffering from a heart attack or boredom ... you ok?00:08
ibuclawBeanLite, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes#Partition%20alignment%20changes%20may%20break%20some%20systems00:12
BeanLiteAre you saying my system is broken?00:14
BeanLiteThe link sent me to a section saying "Partition alignment changes may break some systems"00:15
nlsthznHi all :D00:23
BeanLiteibuclaw ... the laptop is brand new ... should I be taking it back to the store and report it as broken?00:25
seidosBeanLite, what make and model?00:33
BeanLiteSamsung Q43000:33
BeanLiteWhich is not what was listed in the danger grouping.00:34
seidosBeanLite, what did you check against?00:36
BeanLiteThe link ibuclaw sent me ... https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes#Partition%20alignment%20changes%20may%20break%20some%20systems00:36
BeanLiteIn the partition alignment my break some systems, the notes warn about certain types of Asus machines.00:37
seidosBeanLite, ah.  well, i couldn't get 10.04 to install on my notebook.  it isn't listed anywhere either.00:42
BeanLiteSo what should I do?  What is the next step?00:43
Cheri703quick question: where does rhythm box save ripped tracks?00:57
BeanLiteibuclaw ... seidos was working with me for a little bit, but he just left and I still don't have an answer ... Is my system cracked, and should I bring it back to the store?  If the answer is no, I just need an idea of my next step.  Should I come back another night and seek out assistance?  If yes, then thank you very much for all of your help.01:03
ibuclawBeanLite, "By default, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS aligns partitions on disk to 1 MiB (1048576 bytes) boundaries. This ensures maximum performance on many modern disks, particularly solid state drives but also new "Advanced Format" disks with physical sectors larger than the traditional 512 bytes. Very few systems nowadays need the old alignment, used in the days of MS-DOS when it was useful for partitions to start at the beginning of a cylinder."01:04
ibuclawHow this ties in with  "unable to satisfy all constraints on the partition":01:05
ibuclawThe way the partition layout is formatted (I assume aligned to cylinder) is not supported anymore.01:07
BeanLiteok ... does that mean that I need to pick numbers that exactly calculate to certain numbers ... for example 4GB = 4096 MB, and I need to pose exact numbers instead of just sliding the bar to an approximate position?01:08
BeanLiteor are you saying ... do not uncheck "round to the cylinders"01:10
BeanLiteibuclaw - SUCCESS!  While I was waiting for you, I started to experiment.  I followed your instructions to the "T" except I left the "round to the cylinder" box checked, and used exactly round numbers.  I have saved 100GB as sda5 and 4GB as sda6.01:28
BeanLiteNow that my partitions are set, should I go back to the title screen and now pick the option "install Ubuntu 10.04LTS?"01:29
BeanLiteWelcome back stlsaint01:43
stlsaintthanks01:44
BeanLiteibuclaw has been great, and he is clearly in demand by most of the rest of room.  Thanks for the recommendation.01:45
stlsaintBeanLite: yea once you get ahold of him you sorta have to try your hardest to pick his brain as long as you can before he flys off again01:46
BeanLiteyeah ... I think he has flown off ... but I might have gotten just enough out of him to be able to proceed from some of my documentation links that I found in the ubuntu website.01:47
BeanLiteI've asked him a question and I'm going to wait a little bit longer to see if I can attract him back.01:48
Cheri703BeanLite: were you waiting to hear if you should go ahead and install now that the partitions are set?01:49
* Cheri703 has been lurking01:49
stlsaintanybody want a challenge?01:49
BeanLiteYes!01:49
stlsaintyou do?? :D01:49
Cheri703BeanLite: yes to me or to stlsaint01:50
Cheri703?01:50
Cheri703and stlsaint, it depends on what it is...01:50
* Cheri703 never agrees to things without further explanation ;)01:51
nlsthznIs there any cookies involved in this challenge?01:51
BeanLiteIf the answer to the question is "yes" then will the UbuntuCD make it obvious how to drop the install procedure into the newly created sda5.  Cheri703 ... the big YES was for you.01:51
BeanLiteSorry stlsaint ... I can't even get out of my own way.01:51
Cheri703BeanLite: you should be able to go into the partitioner that will show up and choose the "set your own partitions" or whatever is similar to that, and then designate which to use01:51
BeanLiteOk ... I will pull up the ubuntu documentation installation advice guide and give it a shot.01:52
roycebarberAny of you sexy nerds know if there is a super-stupid-dummies guide to Ubuntu? Any answers posted will most likely be too technical, so please note the words "super-stupid". I could use that. Better yet, a YouTube series?01:53
BeanLiteCheri703 - ty for answering the question.  Please tell ibuclaw I appreciate all of his help.01:53
BeanLiteStlsaint - Thanks for chatting, and good luck with your problem as well.01:53
Cheri703will do BeanLite01:54

realeyesi need some help with my grub screen04:17
realeyesit wont show ver 10.10 becaue i upgraded w/o live CD04:17
realeyesdo i need to reinstall to fix grub?04:17
capmtrippscan anyone tell me how to set up xp so that i can install ubuntu 10.10 and choose between OS at boot?04:17
realeyescapmtripps: burn 10.10 to CD and go into your BIOS setting on your PC and change the boot priority from Hard Drive to CD ROM04:18
aveilleuxcapmtripps: Install XP normally, leaving half the hard drive empty. Then install Ubuntu normally. Ubuntu will pick up XP's existence in most cases.04:19
capmtrippsmy real question is about formatting my 2nd hard drive so that the OS are independent...04:19
aveilleuxcapmtripps: Yeah, it doesn't matter all that much. Just install Ubuntu to the second drive and it'll be fine.04:19
capmtrippsok... thanks04:20
capmtrippswill it load a booter script or something like that?04:20
aveilleuxcapmtripps: It installs GRUB, which is a bootloader. Not a bootloader script; a full bootloader.04:21
capmtrippsok cool... thanks04:22
capmtrippswhat if windows doesn't currently recognize the drive04:22
capmtrippsit shows up in device manager but not in my computer04:22
capmtrippswill that affect what windows recognizes later?04:23
aveilleuxcapmtripps: That doesn't matter... Windows won't recognize it anyway since the drive will be formatted using ext4, a file system that Windows doesn't understand.04:23
capmtrippsah, that's exactly the information i was looking for04:23
realeyesQuestion: If I went from 10.04 to 10.10 and GRUB doesn't recognize 10.10, how do I fix grub?04:23

nlsthznNickyL1: You use wired to just connect to eth0 or to connect to broadband etc?16:44
NickyL1nlsthzn: I use it to connect to broadband.16:46
nlsthznNickyL1: I have to confess I have not used anything except Network Manager in Gnome  to make connections to my DSL device... I am a bit lost in CLI but wanting to learn... lets hope somebody else can help us both :)16:47

hobgoblink17:07
NickyL1it stopped working while I was on it, not after a reboot or anything17:07
hobgoblindon't imagine though I'm going to be able to help much with net connections though :(17:08
hobgoblinNickyL1: can you open this file with an editor and see what is in there /etc/network/interfaces17:08
NickyL1auto lo17:09
NickyL1iface lo inet loopback17:09
hobgoblinnot that then :)17:10
NickyL1there's no /usr/share/doc/ifupdown/ folder17:10
NickyL1and, if I try ifup -a in the terminal, it doesnt work17:10
hobgoblinwith root rights?17:12
nlsthznNickyL1: hobgoblin to the rescue :D17:13
NickyL1ok, if I do sudo ifup -a nothing happens17:13
hobgoblinnlsthzn: not likely with networking :(17:13
hobgoblinNickyL1: I think you'll need to hang about and wait  or maybe ask in #ubuntu17:16
NickyL1ok, thanks for your help17:16
nlsthznNickyL1: Is Network Manager showing Eth0 as connected or not?17:17
NickyL1I click on it, it says connection established17:17
NickyL1but, when I open it, under last used, it says never17:17
nlsthznSo it says its conneced (icon is an up and down arrow)?17:18
NickyL1it says active, icon is a square with a mic accross it17:19
nlsthznNickyL1: Uhm... and I assume you can't connect to any sites via FF?17:20
nlsthznFirefox17:20
NickyL1nope, and tried to ping17:21
hobgoblinNickyL1: can you do lshw -C Network and lspci -nn  in a terminal - copy and paste it to paste.ubuntu.com - chuck a name in the name box - paste and lest us have the url17:21
hobgoblinI realise you'll need to copy it to a usb stick or something17:21
NickyL1give me a minute17:23
hobgoblinmight give us something to work with - we can hope17:27
NickyL1http://paste.ubuntu.com/524550/17:30
NickyL1the two results are on the same page17:30
nlsthznNickyL1: Running ifconfig you have an IP address etc. assigned to eth0?  looked at what you pasted and I ca't see anything wrong there, then again what do I know :)17:33
hobgoblinlooks ok to me as well - I was more interested in the card - but that doesn't appear to be new - in fact there are 5 year old threads with it17:34
NickyL1same IP address17:34
nlsthznNickyL1: Same as?17:35
NickyL1ifconfig17:35
NickyL1192.168.0.101 is the IP address for the dlink router17:35
NickyL1which, I can not even connect to on my desktop17:36
hobgoblinI got to bow out - I have no idea - sorry17:36
NickyL1thanks for your help, I'll try #ubuntu17:37
nlsthznNickyL1: Me too.. sorry (not used routers either... only switches and hubs)... good luck17:37

hobgoblinfail - I meant system testing :)17:58
bioterroryeah, that benchmark17:59
bioterrorit sucks ass17:59
bioterrorPowerMac G4 beats all my machines :D17:59
bobo123I was thinking abouit installing a small winXP partition allso but with windows you have to manually download right drivers and that sorts of thing that one normally don't jhave to worry about with ubuntu17:59
hobgoblinindeed17:59
bioterrorhahaha, driver hell rules18:00

pedro3005canelo, english only here23:01
Jessihello. I am trying to figure out if an open source program that states "runs on Red Hat 7.1 and newer, and most linux distros" will work in Ubuntu?23:30
pedro3005yes23:32
Jessiif I was looking at another open source program, how can I tell if it will work in ubuntu23:32
NickyL1my ethernet card on my desktop stopped working suddenly this morning.  I can not bring up my router through its IP address.  When I look at the Network Manager, it says that "wired network connection is active".23:33
nlsthznJessi: Chances are that just about any application written to work in Linux will work in Ubuntu (as it is a very modern distro)... Very often the website etc. where you get it will already have a deb file which is suitable to be installed in Debian, and thus Ubuntu too and when all else fails you can compile for Ubuntu from source too...23:38
JessiThank you so very much23:40
Jessinlsthzn: Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. It was very helpful. Have a great day.23:41
