=== SpockVulcan is now known as AndrewMC [00:08] ibuclaw ... just wanted to make sure you aren't suffering from a heart attack or boredom ... you ok? [00:12] BeanLite, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes#Partition%20alignment%20changes%20may%20break%20some%20systems [00:14] Are you saying my system is broken? [00:15] The link sent me to a section saying "Partition alignment changes may break some systems" [00:23] Hi all :D [00:25] ibuclaw ... the laptop is brand new ... should I be taking it back to the store and report it as broken? [00:33] BeanLite, what make and model? [00:33] Samsung Q430 [00:34] Which is not what was listed in the danger grouping. [00:36] BeanLite, what did you check against? [00:36] The link ibuclaw sent me ... https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes#Partition%20alignment%20changes%20may%20break%20some%20systems [00:37] In the partition alignment my break some systems, the notes warn about certain types of Asus machines. [00:42] BeanLite, ah. well, i couldn't get 10.04 to install on my notebook. it isn't listed anywhere either. [00:43] So what should I do? What is the next step? [00:57] quick question: where does rhythm box save ripped tracks? [01:03] ibuclaw ... seidos was working with me for a little bit, but he just left and I still don't have an answer ... Is my system cracked, and should I bring it back to the store? If the answer is no, I just need an idea of my next step. Should I come back another night and seek out assistance? If yes, then thank you very much for all of your help. [01:04] BeanLite, "By default, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS aligns partitions on disk to 1 MiB (1048576 bytes) boundaries. This ensures maximum performance on many modern disks, particularly solid state drives but also new "Advanced Format" disks with physical sectors larger than the traditional 512 bytes. Very few systems nowadays need the old alignment, used in the days of MS-DOS when it was useful for partitions to start at the beginning of a cylinder." [01:05] How this ties in with "unable to satisfy all constraints on the partition": [01:07] The way the partition layout is formatted (I assume aligned to cylinder) is not supported anymore. [01:08] ok ... does that mean that I need to pick numbers that exactly calculate to certain numbers ... for example 4GB = 4096 MB, and I need to pose exact numbers instead of just sliding the bar to an approximate position? [01:10] or are you saying ... do not uncheck "round to the cylinders" [01:28] ibuclaw - SUCCESS! While I was waiting for you, I started to experiment. I followed your instructions to the "T" except I left the "round to the cylinder" box checked, and used exactly round numbers. I have saved 100GB as sda5 and 4GB as sda6. [01:29] Now that my partitions are set, should I go back to the title screen and now pick the option "install Ubuntu 10.04LTS?" [01:43] Welcome back stlsaint [01:44] thanks [01:45] ibuclaw has been great, and he is clearly in demand by most of the rest of room. Thanks for the recommendation. [01:46] BeanLite: yea once you get ahold of him you sorta have to try your hardest to pick his brain as long as you can before he flys off again [01:47] yeah ... I think he has flown off ... but I might have gotten just enough out of him to be able to proceed from some of my documentation links that I found in the ubuntu website. [01:48] I've asked him a question and I'm going to wait a little bit longer to see if I can attract him back. [01:49] BeanLite: were you waiting to hear if you should go ahead and install now that the partitions are set? [01:49] * Cheri703 has been lurking [01:49] anybody want a challenge? [01:49] Yes! [01:49] you do?? :D [01:50] BeanLite: yes to me or to stlsaint [01:50] ? [01:50] and stlsaint, it depends on what it is... [01:51] * Cheri703 never agrees to things without further explanation ;) [01:51] Is there any cookies involved in this challenge? [01:51] If the answer to the question is "yes" then will the UbuntuCD make it obvious how to drop the install procedure into the newly created sda5. Cheri703 ... the big YES was for you. [01:51] Sorry stlsaint ... I can't even get out of my own way. [01:51] BeanLite: you should be able to go into the partitioner that will show up and choose the "set your own partitions" or whatever is similar to that, and then designate which to use [01:52] Ok ... I will pull up the ubuntu documentation installation advice guide and give it a shot. [01:53] Any of you sexy nerds know if there is a super-stupid-dummies guide to Ubuntu? Any answers posted will most likely be too technical, so please note the words "super-stupid". I could use that. Better yet, a YouTube series? [01:53] Cheri703 - ty for answering the question. Please tell ibuclaw I appreciate all of his help. [01:53] Stlsaint - Thanks for chatting, and good luck with your problem as well. [01:54] will do BeanLite [01:54] BeanLite: thanks [01:54] roycebarber: try www.ubuntupocketguide.com [01:55] it's a bit old, but don't let that sway you [01:55] it'll help a LOT [01:55] Cheri703 thanks!! [01:55] and always feel free to come back here [01:55] I'm all about explaining the graphical way of doing things (instead of command line) if it is possible :) [01:55] and welcome :) [01:56] I love graphics, thus I own a TV and computer monitor :D [01:56] command line is your friend though! [01:56] Yes, but my brain doesn't function on text. [01:56] except when it isn't >:| [01:56] may the literacy be with you [01:56] also with you [01:56] may it be with us all [01:57] seidos: things might be "easier" or "faster" with cli, but...for many many many people coming from windows, it's just not [01:57] also with those of us who haven't been born yet [01:57] * Cheri703 is gradually learning many cli things, but sometimes gui is just easier [01:57] Cheri703: have you ever heard of clicompanion? [01:57] and those of us who might be reborn [01:57] stlsaint: yeah, I have it...I don't use it often though [01:57] also those of us who wander aimlessly with no body [01:58] Cheri703, it's a matter of memorizing commands, which i'm terrible at. [01:58] ohhhh! *cough* *cough* *cough* [01:58] yeah, I make cheat sheets :) [01:58] * roycebarber has 2kb of onboard brain ram [01:59] * seidos finds that hard to believe [01:59] brain ram is so difficult to measure [01:59] as is brain hdd [01:59] as is brain GPU SLI [02:00] sli? [02:00] perhaps i misspoke. sli, as in using two graphics cards on nvedia [02:00] ATI calls it CrossFire [02:00] * nlsthzn thinks that there is a lot of posting going on here... [02:01] two graphics cards? people do that still? i thought that was stopped after 3dlabs [02:02] seidos: crossfire sli's ;) [02:03] stlsaint, apathy [03:19] night all [04:15] hi all [04:15] anyone got the time to answer a few questions? [04:16] !ask | capmtripps [04:16] capmtripps: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) [04:17] i need some help with my grub screen [04:17] it wont show ver 10.10 becaue i upgraded w/o live CD [04:17] do i need to reinstall to fix grub? [04:17] can anyone tell me how to set up xp so that i can install ubuntu 10.10 and choose between OS at boot? [04:18] capmtripps: burn 10.10 to CD and go into your BIOS setting on your PC and change the boot priority from Hard Drive to CD ROM [04:19] capmtripps: Install XP normally, leaving half the hard drive empty. Then install Ubuntu normally. Ubuntu will pick up XP's existence in most cases. [04:19] my real question is about formatting my 2nd hard drive so that the OS are independent... [04:19] capmtripps: Yeah, it doesn't matter all that much. Just install Ubuntu to the second drive and it'll be fine. [04:20] ok... thanks [04:20] will it load a booter script or something like that? [04:21] capmtripps: It installs GRUB, which is a bootloader. Not a bootloader script; a full bootloader. [04:22] ok cool... thanks [04:22] what if windows doesn't currently recognize the drive [04:22] it shows up in device manager but not in my computer [04:23] will that affect what windows recognizes later? [04:23] capmtripps: That doesn't matter... Windows won't recognize it anyway since the drive will be formatted using ext4, a file system that Windows doesn't understand. [04:23] ah, that's exactly the information i was looking for [04:23] Question: If I went from 10.04 to 10.10 and GRUB doesn't recognize 10.10, how do I fix grub? [04:23] thanks again! [04:24] realeyes: Reinstall GRUB [04:24] how do I go about that? [04:26] http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/reinstall-ubuntu-grub-bootloader-after-windows-wipes-it-out/ [04:28] aveilleux: what if I dont have a live CD? [04:29] realeyes: then.. make one? [04:29] ;? [04:29] Not sure if I have blank CDs ;/ [04:30] have a usb flash drive? [04:30] make a live usb [06:52] good morning [12:15] Hello. [12:16] hey Silver_Fox_ [12:16] Helloo cprofitt . [12:16] You were mentioned a few times at UDS mate [12:16] Oh, that's nice. For why? :) [12:17] I do not recall the details, but both were - Silverfox has done 'x' type mentions [12:17] Oh okay, nothing "bad" then is what I am getting at. [16:44] nlsthzn: I've never opened Network Manager, I don't think [16:44] NickyL1: You use wired to just connect to eth0 or to connect to broadband etc? [16:46] nlsthzn: I use it to connect to broadband. [16:47] NickyL1: I have to confess I have not used anything except Network Manager in Gnome to make connections to my DSL device... I am a bit lost in CLI but wanting to learn... lets hope somebody else can help us both :) [16:47] can I open Network MAnager? [16:50] NickyL1: What version of Ubuntu are you running? [16:50] nlsthzn: I just updated to 10.10 [16:52] nlsthzn: I checked in the system package manager, and it's installed [16:53] Ok, top right hand corner you will see the Network Manager... right click (if memory serves) and you should get options to Enable/Disable networking, also set up new etworks etc. That is what I usually use to set up my DSL... have a look and report back :) [16:54] yes, check mark for enable networking, and one for enable notifications [16:54] options for connection information and edit connections [16:54] and About [16:55] NickyL1: Edit connections, ad your DSL info, mark as always connect (of you want)... then left click on Network Manager and select the DSL you created and you should be good to go :) [16:55] (I hope)( [16:56] DSL Info is from my ISP? [16:56] My router is configured to connect to the internet [16:56] sorry, might have steered you in the wrong direction earlier [16:57] Ah... ok... in that case you should just have to select auto eth0 and be good to go (if your router is up and running correctly) [16:59] NickyL1: Sucks to be stuck at work with only Windows... can't check anything out on Linux for myself quickly (and I am still very much a newbie) [16:59] I just physically checked the dlink router. [17:03] NickyL1: have you done anything just prior to it going down? [17:04] not that I can think of. Was downloading some stuff and workign online. I can't remember doing anything in the setup [17:04] nlsthzn: that's right, [17:05] and have you removed and reinserted the cables [17:05] NickyL1: was this an upgrade and then it stopped working? [17:06] hobgoblin: yes, and rebooted the machine, and turned down the hat powers the routers/modem. [17:06] hobgoblin: the upgrade was done earlier this week, did not do any updates today [17:06] oic - so the upgrade is not connected then [17:06] no, I don't think so [17:07] I mean did it work after the upgrade and now doesn't [17:07] yes, it was working fine after the upgrades and all [17:07] k [17:07] it stopped working while I was on it, not after a reboot or anything [17:08] don't imagine though I'm going to be able to help much with net connections though :( [17:08] NickyL1: can you open this file with an editor and see what is in there /etc/network/interfaces [17:09] auto lo [17:09] iface lo inet loopback [17:10] not that then :) [17:10] there's no /usr/share/doc/ifupdown/ folder [17:10] and, if I try ifup -a in the terminal, it doesnt work [17:12] with root rights? [17:17] I click on it, it says connection established [17:17] but, when I open it, under last used, it says never [17:18] So it says its conneced (icon is an up and down arrow)? [17:19] it says active, icon is a square with a mic accross it [17:20] NickyL1: Uhm... and I assume you can't connect to any sites via FF? [17:35] ifconfig [17:35] 192.168.0.101 is the IP address for the dlink router [17:36] which, I can not even connect to on my desktop [17:36] I got to bow out - I have no idea - sorry [17:37] thanks for your help, I'll try #ubuntu [17:37] NickyL1: Me too.. sorry (not used routers either... only switches and hubs)... good luck [17:37] might still get a nibble in here - people come and go [17:38] aveilleux might be a network wizz [17:42] what [17:42] huh [17:43] * aveilleux lifts her head up off the desk [17:43] anygood with network issues - /me isn't [17:45] my network card seems to have quit [17:54] if I want to know what network and graphic card etc my coputer have, ccan I see that from ubuntu? [17:54] lspci in a terminal will show you [17:58] bobo123, if you want graphical interface, there should be a application named System profiler and benchmark [17:58] ok [17:58] which can hang sometimes [17:58] fail - I meant system testing :) [17:59] yeah, that benchmark [17:59] it sucks ass [17:59] PowerMac G4 beats all my machines :D [17:59] I was thinking abouit installing a small winXP partition allso but with windows you have to manually download right drivers and that sorts of thing that one normally don't jhave to worry about with ubuntu [17:59] indeed [18:00] hahaha, driver hell rules [18:07] can anyone answer me as to why my keyboard doesn't respond in the GRUB screen (that is the bootloader if I understand correctly)? [21:03] usually all live thingies uses automatic logon [21:03] its asking me for log in info [21:03] I tried root:password [21:03] UndiFineD: keep up the work. [21:03] root:admin [21:04] I will drubin [21:04] haha [21:04] Bboy, ubuntu does not support root login [21:04] UndiFineD: Try (if you want to) get invovled with your local loco [21:04] drubin, I am involved with #ubuntu-nl [21:05] which is why I do translations [21:06] @bioterror: How can I login then? any idea? I'm using Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 [21:07] Bboy, as I looked the webpage, you should see a welcome screen where you can choose either install or try live features [21:08] I got that, choosed live, then it asked for login info [21:09] live should not ask for a password, if it does, then it should be visible on the page you got it from [21:09] UndiFineD: Get some testimonials from your other loco members and add it to your wiki [21:10] Bboy, reboot and try again [21:10] ok will do === DodgeThis_ is now known as DodgeThis [22:59] hola hay alguien por hayyyy [22:59] ummm [23:01] canelo, english only here [23:30] hello. I am trying to figure out if an open source program that states "runs on Red Hat 7.1 and newer, and most linux distros" will work in Ubuntu? [23:32] yes [23:32] if I was looking at another open source program, how can I tell if it will work in ubuntu [23:33] my ethernet card on my desktop stopped working suddenly this morning. I can not bring up my router through its IP address. When I look at the Network Manager, it says that "wired network connection is active". [23:38] Jessi: Chances are that just about any application written to work in Linux will work in Ubuntu (as it is a very modern distro)... Very often the website etc. where you get it will already have a deb file which is suitable to be installed in Debian, and thus Ubuntu too and when all else fails you can compile for Ubuntu from source too... [23:40] Thank you so very much [23:41] nlsthzn: Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. It was very helpful. Have a great day.
