hallois there ok installing lucid packages on maverik?00:51
stlsaintsure00:52
stlsaintbut i wouldnt suggest it on a production system00:52
stlsainttry your specific package in a vm first to ensure no compatibility issues00:52
hallowhen i use --listpkg there is a Ubuntu/source...what is that?00:55
stlsaintsource is where you are getting your packages/updates from01:01
stlsaintyour server you are pulling from01:01
hallothe idea is that i'm trying to install ati drivers form the .run installer from ati.com01:02
hallomust use sudo sh ati_driver.run --buildpkg but there is no support for ubuntu/maverik01:03
stlsainthrm, is this your main system? when dealing with video drivers i wouldnt try this on main machine01:04
halloyes...it's my main machine01:05
stlsainthrm, i would not suggest using a unsupported driver on your system01:06
halloi know...but there are no proprietary drivers for my card01:07
stlsaint:(01:08
Timo_hallo: did you try the one I told u?01:08
Timo_because that command -should- work01:08
Timo_sec. I'm on a ubuntu system now01:08
Timo_with an ati card01:08
stlsaintTimo_: that driver is not supported01:08
Timo_will check what I have01:08
halloTimo_: i tried that command and it said there is no package with that name and it was replaced by "fglrx" package01:11
Timo_hallo: try: sudo apt-get install fglrx01:11
Timo_yes01:11
Timo_try the fglrx01:12
Timo_the one I gave you must've been an old command which is replaced by fglrx01:12
halloTimo_: fglrx no longer supports my driver01:13
halloTimo_: fglrx no longer supports my card01:13
Timo_mmm01:15
Timo_well I don't know then, sorry!01:15
halloTimo_: no problem :) thaks anyway01:15
Timo_you may want to ask in a ubuntu channel01:16
Timo_as lubuntu repositries are the same as ubuntu's anyways01:16
Timo_so it -should- work the same01:16
phillwhallo: there were some cards dropped with 10.10, I've seen one other in here who I've told to use 10.04 instead.01:18
phillwhallo: it was not a lubuntu decision, it's the new kernel for 10.10.01:19
Timo_well lads, I'm going to sleep!01:19
Timo_c u tomorrow!01:19
Timo_bye01:19
hallois there a program similar to daemon tools on windows?01:28
* stlsaint knows little about various windows programs :D01:31
hallo:))01:32
hallosomething to mount iso files01:32
stlsaintOOHHHHH01:32
stlsaintheck yea man01:32
stlsaintPowerISO01:32
stlsaintis my favorite01:32
stlsainthas virtual drives to directly mount iso's as "cd's"01:33
hallothanks01:34
szczurcdemu is open source01:34
szczurand also creates virtual cd reader01:35
szczurhttp://cdemu.sourceforge.net/01:35
stlsaintszczur: nice01:36
stlsainti will have to look into that01:36
szczurand poweriso for linux can only extract the image (at least this what wiki says about that) :)01:37
halloi found Furius ISO Mount Tool under Ubuntu Software Center01:38
phillwhallo: grub2 can mount iso images (sorry, been in conversation)01:40
szczurphillw, not when you're running the system :P (but it can boot from them)01:41
szczurAs far as i know01:41
szczuri like cdemu because it acts as actual cd drive01:42
szczurit's very useful when you're installing program in Wine or trying to play a game using iso image :)01:43
szczuri gues furious iso mount just do the same thing as mount -o loop <iso image> <mount point>01:44
phillwszczur: sorry, I came in late on the coversation.01:44
szczurbut i may be wrong01:44
stlsaintszczur: oh i thought the op was posting on using it on windows01:44
stlsainthallo: if your on linux than go with master iso in repos01:45
stlsaintmaster iso package01:45
hallothanks for help guys...i'll go get some sleep...c'ya later :)01:56
stlsaintl8er01:59
phillwto follow those guidelines.02:05

mir1hello! anyone know why lubuntu sometimes locks up with 100% cpu usage. I have a CPU monitor on, and I can see the whole thing go green sometimes, but for no discernible reason. there's noting in the Task Manager that shows heavy CPU usage by any program, and I've even had "top" dumping out to a file every few seconds, but there's no indication that any program is really whoring the CPU. anyone know what is going on?14:08
phillwmir1: run top via lxterminal14:09
phillwafter a few seconds, pastebin the screen up.14:09
phillw!pastebin  | mir114:10
ubot5mir1: For posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://tinyurl.com/imagebin | !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic.14:10
mir1it's not doing it now...14:10
mir1but i can give you a top log of when it was14:10
phillwmir1: yeah, just grab it and pastebin it (don't forget to include the link :) )14:11
mir1hmm, it's doing it again, but this time top is showing firefox taking the cpu ay 97%14:15
mir1i don't know what it's doing but it wasn't anything very special, it could be a firefox bug then...14:16
phillwmir1: lubuntu does not firefox, it uses chromium.14:16
phillw*does not use firefox*14:16
mir1i know but my mum likes firefox :-/14:16
mir1but it seems a little on the heavy side for this pc...14:17
mir1though in general it takes a few % and sometime has an attack and goes to 97%14:18
mir1http://paste.ubuntu.com/525071/ here is the log from yesterday, it should be every ten secs, but i just noticed a gap around 2:28, which is when the problem started, so maybe top got clobbered by firefox (or whatever it is)14:20
phillwmir1: you'd have to ask on the forums about that, one of the best people and supported threads is at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1193567 lovinglinux is also a really nice guy and will answer personally. Just do let him know you're running lubuntu (it should not make any difference to what he says, but the more information he has the better he can help you).14:20
mir1thanks :-)14:22
phillwmir1: 95.2%wa, seems very high14:24
phillwlet me just do a bit of asking for you.14:25
mir1seems such a long IO time could be caused by a bad disk (it is pretty old). In general, when a process begins winding up the cpu usage, it is the "wa" figure that goes up, and this coincides with filling of the swapfile14:46
phillwmir1: then maybe you're going to have to get your Mum to like Chromium, it took me a while to get used to it, but it is a decent browser.14:52
phillwmir1: it will import all the FFox bookmarks, passwords and history for you if you ask it to.14:53
mir1yeah, i'm having a poke at it now14:55
mir1seems very snappy14:55
mir1i'm planning a new harddrive and a stick of ram for this computer anyway, so that may solve it14:56
mir1thanks for the help14:56
mir1:-)14:56
phillwif you have a decent internet link and not capped, the daily builds are pretty darn good :)14:56
phillwlubuntu ships the 'stable', but there is a beta and then for the adventurous daily builds :)14:57
mir1i think my mum would like the stable14:59
mir1but i'm going to switch my laptop (which is also old) over to lubuntu soon, and then we'll see :-)15:00
mir1turns out xubuntu is full of lies :-p15:00
mir1but lubuntu is great on this computer, except when something causes it seize up, and that may be fixed with the new drive15:02

Newkhello lubuntus! can someone tell me that when xorg.conf is being written to /etc/X11/xorg.conf lubuntu hangs during bootup (before X starts)20:30
Newki mean "why"20:30
bioterrorsumtin wrong in the conf20:31
Newki try to get my nvidia card configured for hardware acceleration20:31
Newkah so if its not present it fals back to some default settings20:32
Newkeven during the hangup... if i delete it.. it jumps to X20:33
Newklike its retrying over and over20:33
Newki tried configuring nvidia by "nvidia x server settings" and it writes a xorg.conf wich stops the bootup20:35
Newkin "additional drivers" i've set it to "nvidia_96" for my geForce2 400 MX but it states "This Driver is active but currently not in use"20:38
bioterrorhmm20:41
bioterroroh no20:41
bioterrorsupport for that card has been dropped off20:42
bioterrorthere's some conversation about that on the mailing list20:42
bioterrorif I remember right20:42
* bioterror summons phillw20:42
phillwNewk: you may want to try 10.04, the team is committed to support it for 5 years20:43
bioterrorhahaha20:43
bioterrorlurker!20:43
bioterrorphillw, but that wont bring back drivers for that chipset20:43
phillwbioterror: phillw has just finished his whift20:43
phillw*shift*20:43
Newkah.. but its strange since nvidia_96 package can be installed20:44
phillwbioterror: I'm not totally sure, but it uses a different repositry than 10.10.20:44
Newkthat packege has support for that card20:44
bioterrorhmmm20:45
phillwNewk: it is something that has been discussed for the older video cards along with the i586 support.20:45
Newkso even though it can be loaded.. it will not be used due to the 10.10 kernel?20:47
phillwNewk: from what i've seen, i think there are problems. we're waiting on people to be able to confirm if it is an issue.20:49
* phillw looks at Newk :)20:49
Newkanyway i can help out testing the issues?20:49
phillwNewk: try 10.04 and see if that works would be a great help20:50
Newkk.. will i have to install it all over or is there a shortcut to revert back?20:50
Newki've seen how to upgrade but can it also be used other way around?20:51
phillwyou would need a clean install. don't forget that you can run it as livecd to see if it works without installing it.20:52
Newkah ofcourse20:53
Newki'll do that :)20:53
phillwNewk: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp#10.0420:54
Newkthanx for the advice.. i'll report if it works.. hope the live cd will run on these 256 mb ram :S20:54
Newkhmmm it doesnt state nvidia geforce legacyt drivers20:56
phillwyeah, it will do so, but installation you may want to use the minimal install route https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp/MinimalInstall20:56
Newkyes i did with this one.. was no other way20:58
Newkit works now pretty good exept HW accel20:58
Newkand it doesnt run programs that want to use opengl 3d20:59
Newklike blender or armagetronad20:59
phillwNewk: have a read  / ask on http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=334 let them know you're running 10.04 kernel.21:00
Newkif it works or if it still doesnt run?21:00
Newkah so its not lubuntu specific but ubuntu 10.10 in general?21:02
phillwthey are the people with graphics knowledge, please tag it as lubuntu when you post it, but I feel it is kernel issue.21:02
Newkk21:02
phillwNewk: they dropped a fair bit of stuff in 10.10, it's why lubuntu has committed to support the beta 10.04 as if it were a LTS21:03
Newkcool21:04
Newki've got another (a bit better) desktop that runs ubuntu 10.04 with a geforce4.. i could also take out the card there to test it in this setup21:05

llogiqAgain, I only got mono sound from aqualung (package from lubuntu 10.04). Is this a bug in aqualung? Can anyone else confirm this?21:20
bioterrordo you get mono sound from mpg321?21:20
Newki've got stereo from audacios221:22
Newk*audacious221:22
bioterrorthen there's something wrong with aqualung?21:24
Newkno ive got now also stereo from aqualung21:25
llogiqbioterror: I don't have mpg321, but mplayer plays stereo.21:25
Newklubuntu 10.10 here21:26
llogiqStrangely, apt-get install --reinstall aqualung warns that it could not authenticate the package.21:27
