proudhawkok, anyone have some time? I placed 10.04 LTS on a powerbook G3. the only thing that won;t work is orca. espeak will not speak and generates a huge log file with bad instruction ))).... nd the default synthasizer reverts to dummy and all that says is to check the logs03:17
proudhawkwithout a working orca, I can't use that machine portably. as it is, I have to ssh into it just to use it03:17
proudhawkso? anyone have a clue or am I whistling in the dark here (bad joke from a blind person, but what can I say)03:18
proudhawkooops. thats bad instruction 000003:19
proudhawkwell, I've been in here over 2 hours and not one peep. what kind of help channel is this?05:59
proudhawkgah! I give up. no answers here07:19

proudhawkok, anyone alive in here?18:00
UndiFineDhello proudhawk 18:01
UndiFineDyou were in before :)18:02
UndiFineDproudhawk, you had a question about orca / espeak ?18:02
proudhawkthere uou are18:03
UndiFineDsorry, I was asleep earlier18:04
proudhawkI have a problem on 10.04 LTS where orca doesn't work correctly. everything else works except that one thing (and only in the dummy driver)18:04
proudhawkthis is on a powerbook G3 lombard18:05
UndiFineDI have not encountered that issue before but I will search for it, for a potential cause18:05
proudhawkthe espeak logs are like 700 MB large18:06
proudhawkI can post snippets of logs here.18:06
UndiFineDplease, paste logs to paste.ubuntu.com18:07
proudhawkI'll have to trim the espeak one. its huge18:07
UndiFineDI understand :)18:07
proudhawkhang on one. ssh'ing into that box now.18:09
proudhawkhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/525209/18:13
proudhawkthere is the paste18:14
proudhawkI hate having to use voiceover on an ssh llink just to use a machine I want to use by itself18:14
proudhawkI haven't tried 10.10 LTS yet18:16
UndiFineDsorry proudhawk I just had a orca crash on me myself18:17
UndiFineD10.10 is not a LTS version18:19
proudhawkoh really? its up there18:19
UndiFineDbut the official support lasts till the next Long Term Support version18:20
proudhawkok, so, I stick with 10.04 and try to figure out why orca won't use the default synth and espeak spits out a huge log, slows the machine to the point of unusability and then forces a hard boot18:22
UndiFineDis this your message ?18:22
UndiFineDWhen starting espeak, the following error message is displayed. Invalid 18:22
UndiFineDinstruction 0000 for phoneme followed by a letter such as h or l. This message 18:22
UndiFineDis repeatedly shown in the terminal untill espeak ends with a segmentation 18:22
UndiFineDfault. I am using Debian Squeeze on a powerpc64 machine. Thanks.18:22
proudhawkno18:22
proudhawkpart of that is related, but is not my message18:23
UndiFineDthen it is found by another powerpc user as well18:23
UndiFineDproudhawk, there is a patch available18:30
UndiFineDit was released on august 1st18:30
UndiFineDso you will need a version higher than: 1.43.0318:31
proudhawkit didnt update then18:31
UndiFineDon ubuntu 10.10 that is: espeak --help18:32
UndiFineDeSpeak text-to-speech: 1.44.04  14.Sep.1018:32

UndiFineDlet me search for that one in 10.0418:35
proudhawkok18:35
UndiFineDyou can download the .deb file and install it manually18:41
UndiFineDit only depends on one library18:41
UndiFineDlibportaudio018:41
UndiFineDyou can download it from this location18:42
UndiFineDhttp://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/e/espeak/espeak-data_1.44.05~really-1.44.04-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb18:43

proudhawkcan you send the link for the download and whatever instructions needed to install?18:46
proudhawktooo many at once18:46
PiciEr, some of those links are for different arches.18:46
UndiFineDyeah I just noticed Pici 18:47
UndiFineDproudhawk, I will make it easy18:48
proudhawkok, what I got was a lot of noise because they all tried to speak at once. have a heart heree, I am blind and need to get messages 1 line at time18:48
PiciSorry.18:49
UndiFineDhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/525225/18:50
proudhawknone of those links seem to be for ppc18:51
UndiFineDubuntu only releases i386 and amd6418:51
proudhawkgrrrrrr18:52
UndiFineDthere is http://espeak.sourceforge.net/18:52
proudhawkgreat.... I'm going to have to compile from sources18:53
proudhawkyou have any idea how long thats going to take on a 333 Mhz processor?18:54
UndiFineDlong enough and terribly confusing for you18:55
proudhawkit was bad enough when I had a little sight, now that I have none, its a new ball game18:56
UndiFineDmy girlfriend is blind on one eye and so is my daughter18:57
proudhawkhmmm. one eye only?18:57
UndiFineDthe other side is failing, Kootz disease18:58
proudhawkI am cursed with having BOTH eyes in that condition18:58
proudhawkouch18:59
proudhawkwhich one has that18:59
UndiFineDso now, I am afraid I will have to find someone else with a powerpc to compile a linux binary espeak for you19:00
UndiFineDboth of them19:01
proudhawkI wish I had a g4 here. then I could have you remotely access it19:01
UndiFineDthe last one ibm made is a power619:02

UndiFineDI am waiting for proudhawk to return19:40
JanCalso, the PPC builds are probably not well-tested, but you can only try...19:42
UndiFineDthe issue was this: http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-bugs-dist@lists.debian.org/msg809075.html19:45

proudhawkI run the script there and it gets the file, correct?21:04
UndiFineDyes, that script will get the files and install them21:05
JanCeh, wouldn't it be better to set the correct sources?21:05
JanCcorrect apt sources21:05
JanCor is this for a debian system?21:06
UndiFineDyes it would JanC21:06
UndiFineDbut it is eassier when he can hear what he is doing .. right21:06
JanCoh, as a workaround to get started, right21:07
JanCforgot about that, sorry21:07
proudhawkthis is why I will be running from an ssh session to the machine in question21:07
UndiFineDdo I need to repost the script proudhawk  ?21:07
proudhawkok, had to install lynx there so I can get the script21:08
proudhawkI copied the link21:09

proudhawkthere is that21:09
UndiFineDwget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7607669/get-espeak.sh21:09
JanCw3m is often installed by default instead of lynx nowadays21:09
proudhawkbtw, my xchat beeped but didn't report a message to growl. was that a whisper defind?21:10
UndiFineDJanC, for proudhawk I leave deliberate pauzes in the chat21:11
JanCUndiFineD: okay, I will shutup for now  ☺21:11
proudhawkok, I heard the beep, but no speech. 21:11
UndiFineDno I did not whisper to you proudhawk 21:11
proudhawkok, something is up. I know there is text there, but growl doesn't think its a chan message.21:12
UndiFineDyou can execute the script by21:13
UndiFineDbash get-espeak.sh21:13
proudhawkok21:13
proudhawkbtw, you sent text to the chan differently than this last 2 times. I had to screen revview to find out what it was21:14
