thetickI don't have any sound effects with gcompris, but the music does play in background.  I have the gcompris-sound-en package and local="en" in my gcompris.conf.  Any ideas what I need to do to get the sound effects working ..ie the melodies for the sound games00:06
thetickAny one here use gcompris? or is better to ask on Edubuntu eventhough I'm using Ubuntu lucid00:36
UbuntuNoobanyone here?00:44
thetickGot my answer at Edubuntu.. later00:45
UbuntuNoobanyone here?  i got a question00:46
aveilleux!ask | UbuntuNoob00:46
ubot2UbuntuNoob: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)00:46
UbuntuNooblol okay um00:46
UbuntuNooblets say i copy a game folder into the hard disk running ubuntu.  i've seen a lot of command lines but if i wanted to run the exe file from the game folder would i need to use a command?  or could i just go into my computer and click on the exe file?00:47
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: Ubuntu can't natively run *.exe files00:48
UbuntuNoobwhat does that mean?  i can't click on the exe file to run the program?00:49
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: Ubuntu can't run Windows programs.00:49
UbuntuNoobi see00:50
UbuntuNoobwhat if00:50
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: That's somewhat oversimplified; there's a compatibility layer called WINE that can run some Windows programs00:50
UbuntuNoobyea i had a chat with someone and they introduced WINE to me00:50
UbuntuNoobbut what if i created a partition which had ubuntu installed on it and dual booted that partition.  could i just go into the other partition from my computer and run it from there?  or does the rule still apply where ubuntu can't run exe files natively?00:51
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: Dual-booting doesn't change the fact that Ubuntu isn't Windows, and can't run Windows programs as a result of that.00:52
UbuntuNoobi see so if i used WINE i could run some windows programs from the partition with windows 7 installed on it while running off of the partition with ubuntu right?00:53
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: It's a little more complicated than that, but yes, I guess you could look at it that way.00:54
UbuntuNoobi see thanks :) clarified alot of things for me00:54

_spacer_thats it02:31
_spacer_im trying to set up a logitech webcam02:31
aveilleux_spacer_: Have you extracted the files from the archive yet?02:32
_spacer_ i think so, i tried to follow the instrutions at the bottom of the page there, but no luck02:33
aveilleux_spacer_: I see no instructions on this page. Just create a folder on your desktop called "pwc" and double-click on the archive, then select all the files and drag them into the "pwc" folder.02:34
_spacer_then what, is that it?02:34
aveilleux_spacer_: No. Tell me when you're done with that.02:35
_spacer_k02:35
_spacer_ok done02:37
_spacer_both archives?02:37
aveilleux_spacer_: ....both?02:37
_spacer_i have a pwc-... and a libpwc02:38
_spacer_sorry really lost now02:38
aveilleux_spacer_: You don't need libpwc02:38
_spacer_ok thats good02:38
_spacer_then im done02:39
aveilleux_spacer_: Now open Terminal and enter "cd ~/Desktop/pwc" without the quotes, caps is important.02:39

aveilleux_spacer_: Okay, now run "sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)"02:41

aveilleuxroot*02:50
_spacer_just in cli... i think02:51
_spacer_im not sure really, my newbie shines through02:51
aveilleux_spacer_: Nnnno, if it's *your* desktop, and you used the command "cd ~/Desktop" as root, and it went to the right folder, then you're logged in graphically as root02:52
aveilleux_spacer_: You're using Ubuntu, correct?02:52
_spacer_yup02:52
aveilleux_spacer_: Where/who told you to enable root? Because root is disabled by default.02:52
_spacer_yeah, uh on another page i was following and then gave up02:53
_spacer_i didn't get very far with that either02:53
aveilleux_spacer_: I would highly recommend logging in as your standard user. That way you don't get conflicts with sudo.02:54
_spacer_ok np, whats the easiest way to loose that root in the term/02:55
aveilleux_spacer_: The easiest way to disable the root account is to type "sudo visudo" in Terminal, finding the line for Root, removing its password hash and replacing it with a bang (!). That will disable the root account's password, and *NIX systems do not allow accounts without passwords to be logged in to.02:56
_spacer_ok im good here02:57
aveilleux_spacer_: Are you logged in graphically as a normal user?02:59
_spacer_yes02:59
_spacer_admin02:59
_spacer_if thats what you mean02:59
aveilleux_spacer_: Okay, download the bz2 archive again, and extract it into a folder "pwc" on your desktop again03:00
_spacer_ok03:00
UbuntuNoobif i wanted to customize my desktop would i have to use commands? or is there an easy GUI to change the desktop?03:01
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: Your desktop.... background?03:01
UbuntuNoobyea when i'm using the ubuntu OS03:02
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: Just right-click on the Desktop and hit "Change Desktop Background..."03:02
UbuntuNooboh cause i'm at class right now and i think the download finished at home.. i haven't tried it just asking in advance thanks :)03:02
_spacer_ok so i have a folder on my Dtop, inside that dolder is another folder pwc03:03
_spacer_am i good?03:04
aveilleux_spacer_: Okay, now open the Terminal and type "whoami" and paste the output here03:05
_spacer_spacer03:06
aveilleux_spacer_: Okay. Now type "cd ~/Desktop"03:06
aveilleuxEr.03:06
aveilleuxcd ~/Desktop/pwc03:06
Cheri703it took me a second on that aveilleux...I read it as "WHOA mi!" instead of "who am I"03:06

_spacer_"/home/spacer/Desktop/pwc"03:11
aveilleux_spacer_: pastebin the output of ls03:11
_spacer_http://paste.ubuntu.com/526744/03:12
aveilleux_spacer_: No, not "pwd", "ls"03:13
_spacer_that is from ls03:13
_spacer_oh hoang on03:14
aveilleux_spacer_: Then you didn't extract the archive into the pwc folder03:14

aveilleux_spacer_: I don't know if this'll help, but try running sudo make03:21
_spacer_yup same thing03:21
aveilleux_spacer_: Hm, I don't know what to tell you then, it seems like a bug in the code to me03:22
_spacer_ok thanks all the same03:22
aveilleux_spacer_: Try installing the libs... create a folder on your desktop called "pwc-libs", download the pwclibs code and extract it to that folder, then "cd ~/Desktop/pwc-libs/" and run make03:24
_spacer_ok lets have a go03:24

_spacer_same for the other archive03:30
_spacer_no no dont be sorry, im glad for your help03:30

aveilleuxBuh?04:01
UbuntuNoobSo... I created a partition to specifically install unbuntu on it04:02
UbuntuNoobAnd now I reboot my computer and boot from cd enter the setup for Ubuntu04:02
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: What did you use to create the partition?04:02
UbuntuNoobI select that I want to specify partitions manually04:03
UbuntuNooboh i just went to manage computer04:03
UbuntuNoobthen allocated space and created the simple volume04:03
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: Arrgh, noooo, Windows does bad things to the hard drive when you let it run amok04:03
UbuntuNooboh so i can't do that?04:03
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: You *can* do it, it's just more complicated if you don't04:04
UbuntuNoobwait so it's bad to create a partition with windows?04:04
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: It's much easier to just leave the partitions alone and let the Ubuntu installer automatically handle the partitions (you get to choose how much space it takes up)04:04
UbuntuNooboh so i should just delete the partition?04:05
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: Undo the change, delete the partition you made and re-allocate the space back to C:\ and run the Ubuntu installer, then have it automatically make partitions04:05
UbuntuNoobwait by let it auto make the partition will it ask me how much i want to allocate for that partition?04:06
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: It should04:07
UbuntuNoobokay thanks i'll try that right now :)04:07
UbuntuNoobgive me a minute04:07
UbuntuNooboh and does ubuntu load hella fast like linux does?04:08
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: Um... Ubuntu is Linux.04:08
UbuntuNoobyea i know but the distribution of linux doesn't mean it's faster04:08
UbuntuNoobcould mean that it's slower04:08
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: "Linux" refers to the kernel. Ubuntu uses the Linux kernel.04:09
UbuntuNooboh my computer isn't loading04:09
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: "Ubuntu" is a brand of GNU/Linux, which is the entire operating system.04:09
UbuntuNoobis that bad?04:09
aveilleux....generally04:09
stlsaintlol04:09
UbuntuNoobthis doesn't look too pleasant04:09
UbuntuNoobis ubuntu the best distribution of linux so far?04:10
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: Well that depends on how you define "best". I'd be willing to say that it's probably the most usable and newb-friendly.04:11
UbuntuNoobwell the partition crap is being difficult with me right now lol04:11
UbuntuNoobi thought i could just assign a partition for ubuntu to install on04:11
UbuntuNoobdoesn't look like that's the case though04:12
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: I currently run Fedora, which is a step away from that in terms of how much is done for the user and how much the user is expected to know and do04:12
UbuntuNoobi would probably fail04:12
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: You *can* do that, but Windows doesn't like other OSs messing with its partitions.04:12
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: are you manually setting parititons or letting ubiquity do it?04:12
UbuntuNoobmanually04:12
UbuntuNoobthere are 3 options04:13
aveilleuxstlsaint: UbuntuNoob used the Windows partition manager to set up the partition04:13
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: have you already have emtpy unallocated space?04:13
UbuntuNoobside by sides04:13
UbuntuNoobmanually04:13
UbuntuNooband something else04:13
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: have you already have emtpy unallocated space?04:13
UbuntuNoobyea i have empty unallocated space right now04:13
UbuntuNoobi can't load my original OS right now04:13
UbuntuNoobso i'm trying to do something with the OS installer for ubuntu04:13
stlsaintalright so why are you going for a manual partition? unless you just want to learn, you need to set a swap and root partition at minimal04:13
stlsaintwait...huh?04:14
UbuntuNoobi dont know04:14
stlsaintyou cant load windows? have you installed ubuntu yet?04:14
UbuntuNoobi can't install it04:14
UbuntuNoobit's not letting me04:14
UbuntuNoob:(04:14
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: whats the error?04:14
UbuntuNoobwait for it...04:14
UbuntuNooboh04:14
UbuntuNoob"no root file system is defined please correct this from the partitioning menu"04:14
stlsaintyep, you need to set a root04:15
UbuntuNoobhow do you do that?04:15
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: click on the partition and hit either change or edit04:15
UbuntuNoobokay04:15
UbuntuNoobwindow pops up saying edit a partition04:15
UbuntuNoobuse as.....04:16
UbuntuNoobi dont see a root choice though04:16
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: have you already created a swap partition?04:16
UbuntuNoobnope04:16
stlsaintroot = this symbol (/)04:16
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: alright we will set a swap first04:16
UbuntuNoobokay04:16
UbuntuNoobshould i change the partition size?04:16
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: change the size of the free space to only use 2gb=204804:16
UbuntuNoobokay04:17
stlsaintyou should have the rest of the free space after making swap04:17
UbuntuNoobso04:17
UbuntuNoobnew partition size in mb = 2048?04:17
UbuntuNooband use as swap area?04:17
stlsaintyep yep04:17
UbuntuNoobhit next continue?04:17
UbuntuNooband wahtever's after that?04:17
stlsaintwhat ever is left over use as root (/)04:17
UbuntuNoobhow should i define it as a root partition?04:18
stlsaintsame way you set swap04:18
stlsaintmust select the: "use as" option04:18
UbuntuNoobcreating a swap partition takes a long time04:19
stlsaintit shouldnt04:19
UbuntuNoobo.o04:19
stlsainthow much free space are you giving to ubuntu?04:19
UbuntuNoob100gb04:19
UbuntuNoobfor some reason the type is fat3204:20
UbuntuNoobis that usual?04:20
UbuntuNoobcause the original one is ntfs04:20
stlsaintalright so you should have created a small partition out of that 100gb of 2gb04:20
UbuntuNoobit's still creating04:20
stlsaintso you should have 98 or 97.x leftover used for root04:20
stlsaintare you in the linux installer?04:20
UbuntuNoobyea04:20
UbuntuNoobthat's strange04:21
stlsaintwhats happening??04:22
UbuntuNoobit's just working04:22
UbuntuNoobi dont know if i should quit and try again or not04:22
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: let it finish then do the same process to set the leftover 98 to use ext4/root04:23
UbuntuNoobshoudl i hit quit and try again?04:23
UbuntuNoobcause it's still working...04:23
UbuntuNoobi mean it's okay cause i backed my computer up before i tried this and if everything does decide to go down hill then i can just use the back up04:25
stlsaintif you want to quit is up to you, i suggest just letting it finish, you should be able to see the details in the dropdown box in the window04:25
UbuntuNoobhehe i quit looks like i'm running ubuntu without installing it04:26
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: you can try rebooting into livecd and letting ubuntu install itself into the largest free space automatically04:26
UbuntuNoobhmm04:27
UbuntuNoobis there any way to fix the partitions using ubuntu?04:27
aveilleuxUbuntuNoob: The LiveCD has a program called GParted, you can edit partitions using that04:28
UbuntuNoobwhere do i go to get there?04:28
UbuntuNoobor wait let me try installing it again by running it off the desktop04:29
UbuntuNoobso swap then root04:29
UbuntuNoobso i'm creating a swap partition of size 2048 MB04:30
stlsaintyea04:30
UbuntuNoobbut it says that the whole partition is type swap already04:30
stlsainti knew something was up when you said it was taking a long time04:30
UbuntuNoob?04:31
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: are you in gparted?04:31
UbuntuNoobno i'm just running the install thing from the desktop04:31
stlsaintaveilleux: yo, what language did you say you like programming in?04:31
aveilleuxC04:31
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: are you able to delete that 100gb04:32
stlsaintaveilleux: oh ok04:32
UbuntuNoobi will try that04:32
aveilleuxstlsaint: Why?04:33
UbuntuNoobokay04:33
UbuntuNoobit's free space now04:33
stlsaintaveilleux: why what?04:33
aveilleuxstlsaint: Why did you want to know?04:33
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: alright now, click the partition and hit change/edit04:33
UbuntuNoobonly lets me add04:33
stlsaintalright well hit add04:34
UbuntuNoobokay04:34
UbuntuNoobwait do i still need a swap partition now?04:34
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: yes04:35
UbuntuNoobshould i make that partition logical?04:36
UbuntuNooband have the location be end?04:36
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: logical and i would put at beginning04:36
UbuntuNoobwhat does location mean anyway?04:36
UbuntuNoobjust the beginning of that free space right?04:36
stlsaintyes04:37
UbuntuNoobnot like the beginning of my original partition?04:37
UbuntuNoobwoot it worked04:37
UbuntuNoob:D04:37
UbuntuNoobnow add ext4 journaling file system as primary partition at end?04:37
stlsaintalright now the rest make into root04:37
UbuntuNoobis it ext4 journaling file system04:38
UbuntuNoob?04:38
stlsaintyea04:38

UbuntuNoobit works!04:38
stlsaintalright now hit next04:38

stlsaintthe rest is all up to you now04:39
UbuntuNoobwait04:39
UbuntuNoobwhen i hit install now it says no root file system is defined o.o04:39
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: you did not set the 98 gb partition as root04:39
stlsaintUbuntuNoob: go back and edit the partition except dont change anything except the "use as" option04:40
UbuntuNooboh i see04:40

apollothethirdCan someone tell me how to start X without an Windows Manager so that I can run the Windows Manager from a remote machine?09:20
apollothethirdIf anyone was looking at my question and wondering, I was still testing and found out that you can just type "X" in a terminal window.  Then go to another terminal window, set the display, login to the remote machine, then run the session.09:43
benpowers23i am switching from running ubuntu in windows to installing alongside windows i have done everything to prepare for this, but now that im booted on the disk i only have two options erase whole disk and manual09:49
benpowers23there is no option to resize partitions09:50
apollothethirdLook for an unused partition to install the ubuntu.09:50
benpowers23there are no unused partitons, there is the main partition and the recovery partition09:51
apollothethirdInstall an addition drive.09:52
apollothethirdVery large drives can be purchased for under $30.09:52
benpowers23i have a hp dv7 laptop with a 320 gb hd in it09:53
benpowers23is that not plenty large enough?09:53
benpowers23i use a 1tb  external for data09:53
apollothethirdYou might consider backing up your Windows installation, repartitioning it so that you can have a partition for ubuntu then restore your windows 7, then install the ubuntu.09:54
apollothethirdYou can also install ubuntu on a USB drive.  I purchased a 16 gig pen drive for that reason and it works great.  I take my ubuntu installation wherever I go.09:55
benpowers23so your suggesting a complete reformat and then a recovery on the windows?09:55
benpowers23and leaving a  place for ubuntu?09:56
apollothethirdFrom your initial message and descriptions in your followup, that's the only way to have ubuntu coexist on your internal hard drive.09:56
benpowers23why do i not have the option to resize my partitions?09:56
apollothethirdAgain, the other alternative is to install ubuntu on a pen drive.  I find the pen drive to work sufficient.09:57
apollothethirdYou will need a partition for the ubuntu.  At present you don't have a partition.  The only way you can have more than one partition is to resize the big one into more than one.09:57
benpowers23ok09:57
benpowers23it doesnt give me the option to resize the large partition, that is what i want to do09:58
apollothethirdYou'd have to use a separate program to do the partitioning.  Either use the Windows installation disk for the partitioning or a program such as "gparted live cd"10:00
benpowers23ok thank you10:01
apollothethirdYou're very welcome.10:02
angeloHi!10:34

hobgoblinbenpowers23: if no-one else is about - I'll be happy to do so in 5 or 10 minutes10:49
benpowers23ok thank you10:50
hobgoblinin the meantime - set out what it is you actually want to achieve - anyone will need that before they can help :)10:50
benpowers23i am currently running ubuntu off the boot dvd, and i wanted to resize the main partition of my hard drive to split between windows and ubuntu, but the option that the installation web page shows is not available10:53
benpowers23there is only format and use the whole drive, or manual10:53
benpowers23i have thought on the subject for a while and decided a clean copy of windows might not be a terrible thing, i have al my personal data backed up and am ready to take action, i just am having some confidence issues.10:55
benpowers23i am at work in the middle of the ohio river and i wont be able to get off for 3 weeks so if this goes south i am stuck until i get home10:56
hobgoblinok - looks like there are not other takers so you're stuck with me :)10:56
benpowers23that is fine thank you10:57
benpowers23i want to use windows and ubuntu and hopefully share data between them10:57
benpowers23that is my ultimate goal10:58
hobgoblinok - can I assume that this is the first time you've tried a linux OS?10:58
hobgoblinand are you in the livecd now?10:58
benpowers23yes10:58
benpowers23i did install in windows previously10:59
benpowers23but removed it to make space10:59
benpowers23to give it its own partition10:59
hobgoblinok - assuming you are in the livecd - go to Apps - Accessories - run the terminal and paste in this command    sudo fdisk -l11:00
hobgoblinonce you have the output - go to paste.ubuntu.com - copy it there - put a name in the name box - hit the paste button - you will get a new url - give me that11:00
benpowers23it wont let me launch terminal11:01

benpowers23ok11:25
benpowers23so how shold i set it up?11:25
benpowers233 partitions?11:25
benpowers23one small 2 large?11:25
hobgoblinso - boot windows - resize the drive you want to resize so that you have sufficient space to work with in ubuntu then come back here11:25
hobgoblinbenpowers23: I would do the resize then come back here with the livecd booted - you'll not be able to make suitable partitons with vista :)11:26
benpowers23ok11:27
hobgoblinI'll be about all day - so ping me if you want11:27
hobgoblinor just anyone who happens to be about - now that I am talking to myself lol11:27
apollothethirdbenpowers23 are you still there?11:28
hobgoblinapollothethird: he's gone11:32
apollothethirdthanks.11:36
apollothethirdI was going to suggest that you can actually partition from ubuntu live.  I did that for my pen drive and it works perfectly.  He could have left the small partition (which is provided by his computer manufacturer) and divided the large one to make partitions for Windows and Ubuntu.  Windows will respect partitions made by Ubuntu.11:38
hobgoblinI know you can - but there are sometimes issues with vista and partitioning - otherwise I would have done it from the livecd - they guy is stuck up a river so I didn't want to take any chances11:39
apollothethirdI understand.11:40
Mohan_chmlVista makes some issues while partitioning and idk why that happens :(12:02
Joeb454Mohan_chml: did you defrag the drive a couple of times before trying to partition it?12:05
Mohan_chmlJoeb454, he he. not for me. :)12:06

cprofittthat will show off some desktops15:38
coz_mm if gnome looks like the panel was widened15:38

JoeMaverickSetti think it's conky done with this, http://www.webupd8.org/2010/06/conkywizard-gui-to-set-up-conky.html :)15:38
cprofitthttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=28186515:38
cprofittthat is a thread on conky with people posting their details15:39
cprofittJoeMaverickSett: the menu was in line with the conky items though15:39
UbuntuNoob_hmmm15:39
UbuntuNoob_i just want that menu and the other specs that show up15:39
UbuntuNoob_doesn't have to be inthe same line15:39
coz_unless there is a gnome applet  that has similar info  and the gnome panel is widened a bunch15:40
cprofittbut either way those two threads will get you on the way to making something you like15:40
cprofittmany choices of extra apps15:40
UbuntuNoob_okay15:40
cprofittlooking through those two threads will expose you to most of them15:40
UbuntuNoob_thank you :) time to explore lol15:40
JoeMaverickSettcprofitt: might be an icon pointing to those commands that will open up, e.g. trash? :) just a thought.15:40
cprofittthere are panel mods, docks, etc15:40
cprofittJoeMaverickSett: could be...15:40
cprofittthe beauty of Linux and Ubuntu is there are so many ways to make your computer YOURS15:41
JoeMaverickSett*anything is possible if you just believe!* ;)15:41
coz_you guys know about this ..yes   ?   telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl   << in terminal15:42
JoeMaverickSettyes.15:42
coz_:)15:42
UbuntuNoob_what happens if i delete the panel up top?15:44
coz_UbuntuNoob_,  you have no panel15:44
UbuntuNoob_would that be bad?15:45
coz_UbuntuNoob_, you would need to have a dock for applications or open  your applications via terminal15:45
UbuntuNoob_cause i dont see any other way to access stuff if i removed that panel15:45
UbuntuNoob_oh open them through terminal...15:45
coz_not sure if alt+F2  would be disabled at that point...I havent tried it15:45
coz_UbuntuNoob_,  or if you want the gnome panel to be "similar" to that image you posted ...right click / properties / "size" = something more than it is15:47
coz_UbuntuNoob_,  change the background to transparent15:47

dizmanother question i have; the mail box button on the top right of the task bar.. when you expand the option then goto mail can you make it open a different application?16:00
lukjadHi everyone16:11
lukjadI'm (finally) updating my Ubuntu 9.04 install to 10.1016:12
zkriesseeh two updates or just full install16:13
lukjadzkriesse Full install16:13
lukjadI've backed up my /var/www folder and have a separate /home partition. Anything else I should do?16:13
lukjadI also had synaptic make a package list16:13
lukjadAnd hai zkriesse16:14
zkriesselukjad: k cool....and hiyas16:14
lukjadzkriesse Anything I'm missing16:14
lukjad?16:14
phillwlukjad: in that case just do a clean install, saves you updating grub legacy and changing the file system to ext416:14
zkriesseI don't think so16:14
dizmi have another question;16:14
dizmthe mail button, in the top right of the task bar. can you make that open a different application?16:15
phillwlukjad: I have instructions for updating your /home to ext416:15
dizmlike thunderbird?16:15
zkriesseI don't think so....16:15
lukjadphillw I'm only reinstalling / I plan on leaving /home and a few other partitions untouched16:15
zkriesseNotice i said "think"16:15
lukjadphillw I don't have a way to back up my partitions16:15
aveilleuxdizm: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/05/how-to-add-thunderbird-to-the-ubuntu-messaging-menu/16:15
lukjadMy external HD's power converter died16:15
phillwlukjad: that is entirely up to you, mine went sweetly; but as you say, you MUST have a backup :)16:16
dizmah, nice aveilleux16:16
dizmthank you16:16
dizm:)16:16
aveilleuxdizm, No problem16:16
aveilleuxdizm, I had the same issue not too long ago ;-)16:16
lukjadphillw You know what, I'm going to get myself a new HD16:16
dizm:)16:16
lukjadphillw I mean, I don't like updating stuff and worrying16:17
lukjadIt's about time I get something new for my PC.16:17
lukjadphillw zkriesse Do either of you prefer a brand for external HDs?16:17
zkriesseAh i do16:18
zkriessegimme a sec i'll grab the link16:18
lukjadwhich?16:18
phillwlukjad: Seagate are a little faster, but Western digital are pretty bomb proof and use les power.16:18
lukjadk16:18
lukjadphillw I keep stuff forever16:19
zkriesseWestern Digital is what i was going to say16:19
lukjad:D]16:19
phillwlukjad: I use WD's for laptops, but for a desktop system you may well be better off with a Seagate unit.16:19
zkriesseNah, WD are good16:20
lukjadphillw True, but I rarely use my HD, just for backups16:20
zkriesseWe've got a WD Terabyte drive for my dad's desktop...runs fine16:20
lukjadI'll sacrifice speed for stability and durability16:20
* phillw WD drives are extremely reliable, just a little slower. for backups I'd always go for a WD unit, but that's just IMHO.16:21
pedro3005I like how phillw randomly decides to speak in /me instead of normal for no apparent reason16:22
pedro3005he doesn't even change tenses16:22

UndiFineDPCChris, made progress ?19:15
PCChrisyeah, sorry19:15
PCChrisUndiFineD, I ended up hacking some stuff together in xrandr in the script I'm running to mess with reconfiguring the displays before running the rest of the script19:16
UndiFineDwith a static xorg.conf, you just specify the 2 monitors and the resolutions they use19:17
UndiFineDthe virtual desktop size is that of both screens combined in a single rectangular19:18
UndiFineDit is ok to have a space of unused bits19:18

head_victimI've never used Vbox with a cd to be honest, only ever used iso files.21:47
stlsainthead_victim: the same pertains as with a iso, just point the cd setting to look at the actual physical cd/dvd drive21:47

SPooNHello there.23:04
head_victimGday SPooN23:07
SPooNTotally messed up my ubuntu install... accidentally gave it the whole HD so now I'm relying on Ubuntu w/o any of my old, familiar Windows... Hope this works out.23:08
stlsaintSPooN: did you install lubuntu?23:09
head_victimSPooN: that's not totally messed up, that's an upgrade :)23:09
stlsaintSPooN: sorry23:09
stlsaintlol23:09
SPooNuhm... I installed Ubuntu 10.10 off a USB23:09
stlsaintSPooN: are you familiar with ubuntu?23:10
SPooNI was ready to make the swap honestly, I just had documents/files on Windows that I would have liked to keep/transfer23:10
head_victimSPooN: ahh and no backups?23:10
SPooNNo, I've never used it before. Got some guidance on getting Broadcom-STA downloaded, and getting Flash23:10
SPooNI'm not smart enough to keep backups. Fortunately most of my schoolwork is backed up though23:11
head_victimOk23:11

ScottDhi.23:36
head_victimHi ScottD23:36
ScottDI can't get anyone to reply in #ubuntu so I figured I'd try here. I'm thinking about buying the new Dell XPS and I wanted to know if anyone had any trouble with Ubuntu on it.23:37
head_victimTo be honest, the best way would probably be a google of the model number.,23:37
head_victimThere are so many different options it's hard to give a blanket yes or no23:38
ScottDI can't find the exact model number anywhere :(23:38
head_victimDo you have a link?23:38
ScottDhttp://www.dell.com/us/p/xps-17/fs23:39
ScottDThe performance model with upgraded wifi and bluetooth23:39
ScottDThese were just released in late october so23:40
head_victimthe 6200 or 6250?23:40
head_victimwireless?23:40
ScottD625023:40
ScottDwait no, 620023:41
head_victimAnd dell bluetooth 3.0?23:41
ScottDyes23:41
head_victimHmm23:45
ScottDI just don't want to buy it and be stuck using Windows.23:46
head_victimScottD: maybe email them for a specific model number, I can't seem to extract that off them either23:50
ScottDOkay. I'll call monday and see if I can get some more info. I might drop back by if I can't find anything on google.23:51
head_victimSorry I can't be of more help, someone else might be able to if you hang around a little.23:51
ScottDIt's okay. Thanks for trying. (: I'll idle :P23:51
SPooNscottD are you still here?23:56
geirhaChances are, most of the hardware will be supported. It won't hurt to ask dell how well this particular model works with linux.23:56
ScottDmhm23:56
SPooNif so, you can just pretend you are going through to the actual purchase of the XPS, and then hit specifications and the Wireless Card will be listed23:56
SPooNyou can then crossreference that with ndiswrapper or the Broadcom-STA list23:57
ScottDhttp://dl.dropbox.com/u/9631803/dell-xps-17.png is all the hardware23:58
SPooNright, so from that you can see that it is INtel Centrino Advanced-N 6200....23:59
