nimbioticsive got ubuntu 10.10 installed. can i install ubuntu studio on top of it w/o losing anything? TIA!00:55
holsteinhey nimbiotics00:56
holsteinyou can just install what you want00:57
holsteinfrom the repos00:57
holsteinIF you want to install one of the meta-packages00:57
holsteinyou can do that00:57
holsteinyou can search in synaptic for ubuntustudio00:57
holsteinand READ about them00:57
nimbioticsi dnt know much about this, but i think ive got to replace pulseaudio. how do i do that?00:57
holsteinnimbiotics: nah00:57
holsteinyou dont00:57
holsteinfor example00:58
nimbioticsits all messed up00:58
holsteinthere is a metapackage00:58
holsteinubuntustudio-audio00:58
holsteinyou install that00:58
holsteinand you get JACK and ardour00:58
holsteinand other goodies00:58
holsteinubuntustudio-audio-plugins00:58
holsteinthose are the audio plugins00:58
nimbioticswill it replace pulseaudio?00:58
holsteinno00:58
nimbioticshow can i replace pulseaudio?00:58
holsteinyou will have to trouble shoot that separately00:59
holsteinwhat is the issue?00:59
nimbioticslong story ...00:59
nimbioticshave been trying to merge a sink and a source and after all the testing ive done, all ive got is messdup stuff01:00
holsteinwell, i would probably google 'ubuntu maverick 10.10 remove pulse audio'01:00
holsteinyou dont really replace it01:00
holsteinJACK will run usually regardless01:00
holsteinbut, thats not really the purpose of JACK01:01
nimbioticsi dnt want to make my life more complicated, all i need to do is be able to record phone calls i make thru google voice01:01
holsteinnimbiotics: OH01:01
holsteini remember you ;)01:01
holsteinyou didnt just script that?01:01
nimbioticsyes, we were talking last nite01:01
holsteinjust script it, and put a shortcut on the desktop01:01
nimbioticsnow i cant even create the loopbacks i need cause i get an error (Connection failure: Connection terminated)01:02
nimbioticsso not even the scripts will do01:02
holsteini suppose you could try reinstalling pulse01:02
holsteinno reason why you need to replace pulse01:02
holsteinBUT you can get rid of it01:02
nimbioticsi woudl like to completley remove it and reinstall, how can i do that?01:03
holsteinremoving pulse is tricky01:04
holsteini would try selecting it in synaptic01:04
holsteinand select 'reinstall'01:04
holsteinand see how that goes01:04
nimbioticsok, hope that works, ty01:05
holsteini would read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio01:06
holsteinACTUALLY, if it were me, i would just reinstall ;)01:07
holsteinBUT, if i wanted to try and repair, i would read that ^^01:07
holsteinprolly take me about 15 minutes to reinstall ubuntu01:08
nimbioticsi uninstalled pulseaudio, deleted default.pa and am installing again ... will let you know01:09
nimbioticswell, lloks like it worked01:11
holsteinsweet :)01:11
nimbioticswill take me a while to test further01:12
nimbioticsthanks again ... i will most surely bother you again in a while01:12
holsteinhehe01:12
holsteinnimbiotics: i'll probably be here :)01:12
nimbioticshope so. so far you've been my only angel01:12
holsteinlol01:13
memothejanitorhi is there an app on ubuntu studio like the software manager on reg ubuntu?17:48
memothejanitorso i can install custom packages17:49
WACOMaltHeyo folks. I am having an issue with my recent Ubuntu Studio 10.10 install. The install went fine, but on boot I first get an error about missing dependencies.dep, but that seems to not cause anything. After that I get the loading screen with some graphical glitches on the right hand side. After that (only one letter in) the full screen turns to graphical glitches18:04
WACOMaltI'm assuming graphics issues. I'm on a Nvidia 250 GT18:05
WACOMaltis anyone actually active in here?  I hate lurkers...18:07

WACOMaltHi folks :p I'm back!19:02
WACOMaltand looks like some of you may be too now!19:02
holsteinWACOMalt: i had that error once19:03
holsteinluckily i had an older kernel around19:03
WACOMaltreally?19:03
WACOMaltoh god that sounds complicated to fix...19:03
holsteini booted in with an older kernel19:03
holsteinand reinstalled the problematice kernel19:03
holsteinand all was good19:04
holsteingood news is19:04
holsteinthis is not ubuntustudio specific19:04
holsteinSO you can find help anywhere19:04
holsteinbut, that worked for me19:04
WACOMaltok awesome.  Now... I dont have an older kernel...19:05
WACOMaltso how can I go about this?19:06
holsteinhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=159206219:06
WACOMaltproblem is...19:07
holsteinim not sure19:07
WACOMaltMy system doesnt boot19:07
holsteini never have only one kernel around for long19:07
holsteinits a good idea to have a couple19:07
holsteinIF you get an update to the new one19:07
holsteinwhich is what happened to me19:07
holsteini got an update to a recent generic kernel19:08
holsteini think i booted into a realtime kernel i had as well19:08
holsteinto fix it19:08
holsteinWACOMalt: thats a good question though19:08
holsteini think you can boot into that recorvery mode19:08
holsteinhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=15725019:09
holsteinanyhow, in this channel19:10
holsteinyou need to allow a couple hours or a day for a response19:10
holsteinBUT, that error is general19:10
holsteinand related to the generic kernel19:10
WACOMaltgotcha. So forums are better probably19:11
holsteinSO you should be able to get that sorted out in another more active channel19:11
holsteinIF the above info doesnt do it for you :)19:11
holsteinthe email list is quite active as well19:11
WACOMaltok, awesome19:12
WACOMaltthanks so much!19:13
holsteingood luck :)19:13
WACOMaltI was able to boot into recovery!19:15
WACOMalt1meaning kernel is fine? just a graphics driver issue maybe?19:17
WACOMalt1booted with failsafe graphics just fine19:18
holsteinWACOMalt: hey19:18
holsteinprogress :)19:18
WACOMalt1yus!19:18
WACOMalt1installing graphics drivers19:19
holsteinWACOMalt: did you make a custom xorg.cof?19:19
holsteinconf*19:19
holsteinWACOMalt: OH19:19
WACOMalt1not yet19:19
holsteinyeah, thats a good start19:19
holsteinnvidia can be a pain19:19
holsteini just use the open one19:19
holsteini used a knoppix live CD19:19
WACOMalt1I mean failsafe is the full kernel and everything right?  So these drivers are likely the issue if I'm booting fine in failsafe graphics?19:19
WACOMalt1I like nvidias graphics. never had an issue19:20
holsteinto generate me an xorg.conf19:20
holsteinand i force the open nvidia drive19:20
holsteinmaybe nvu?19:20
holsteini forget19:20
holsteinits been a while :)19:20
WACOMalt1lol19:20
WACOMalt1well Ima try this first19:20
holsteinWACOMalt1: i think thats a safe assumption19:20
=== WACOMalt1 is now known as WACOMalt
holsteinand, you should be able to use the nvidia drivers with the generic kernel19:21
holsteinwithout issue19:21
holsteini did some tests, and got the nvidia drivers installed on my hardware19:21
holsteini had some issues with the realtime kernel then19:22
holsteinso i went back to the other one19:22
holsteintheres a patch now though19:22
WACOMaltwhat is the realtime kernel?19:22
holsteinmy audio rig is on lucid19:22
WACOMaltthat is a new one to me19:22
holsteinWACOMalt: theres not a realtime kernel for maverick right now19:23
WACOMaltmaverick?19:23
WACOMaltoh dur19:23
holsteinWACOMalt: thats what your running right?19:23
holsteinmaverick?19:23
holstein10.10?19:23
WACOMaltyah19:23
WACOMaltwhat is the realtime kernel?19:23
holsteinbacically allows lower latency19:23
holsteinfor audio recording19:24
holsteinbecoming unecessary though19:24
WACOMaltI need that. Older PC here19:24
holsteinwith the progress of the generic kernel19:24
WACOMaltI use ASIO 4all on my windows side19:24
holsteinand the -lowlatency one19:24
WACOMaltand of course coreaudio on my OSX side19:24
holsteinWACOMalt: you probably dont *need* it19:24
holsteinif you want to plug a guitar in19:24
WACOMaltI am planning to do Midi control boards19:25
WACOMaltthose like to haeva  lot of lag19:25
holsteinand use ubuntu as a realtime effect processor19:25
holsteinyeah, or that19:25
holsteinWACOMalt: midi triggering19:25
holsteinwell, you can come back to lucid if you need it :)19:25
WACOMaltAll I know is on windows It had lag without ASIO and on OSX it had lag without coreaudio19:25
WACOMaltlol19:25
holsteinprobably wont though19:25
WACOMaltwhy isnt the realtime kernel on maverick yet?19:25
holsteinpretty sure the -lowlatency one is in the repos19:26
holsteinWACOMalt: theres not a yet19:26
holsteinit wont be there19:26
holsteinever19:26
WACOMaltthought that was a big part of studio?19:26
holsteinunless there is a PPA19:26
holsteinand there is one19:26
WACOMalt?19:26
holsteinbut its not ready yet19:26
holsteinand its challenging work maintaining it19:26
WACOMaltgotcha19:26
holsteinand like i said, the need for it is becoming less all the time19:26
WACOMaltwell I'll see how this goers19:27
WACOMalthope I can find drivers for the USB midi on my yamaha keyboard19:27
holsteinyeah19:27
holsteincheck out #opensourcemusicians if you get a chance :)19:27
holsteinWACOMalt: in the future19:28
holsteinyou can use a live CD19:28
holsteinand run lspci19:28
holsteinand lsusb19:28
holsteinand test all te hardware19:28
holsteinthe*19:28
holsteinyou wont be able to install all the ubuntustudio metapackges in ram ;)19:29
holsteinbut you can get an idea of hardware support19:29
WACOMaltokeedoke19:29
WACOMaltthanks man19:30
holsteinWACOMalt: anytime19:30
* holstein gotta run... BBL19:30
WACOMaltOk, I'm off to install all my provideo apps :P19:30
