nimbiotics | ive got ubuntu 10.10 installed. can i install ubuntu studio on top of it w/o losing anything? TIA! | 00:55 |
---|---|---|
holstein | hey nimbiotics | 00:56 |
holstein | you can just install what you want | 00:57 |
holstein | from the repos | 00:57 |
holstein | IF you want to install one of the meta-packages | 00:57 |
holstein | you can do that | 00:57 |
holstein | you can search in synaptic for ubuntustudio | 00:57 |
holstein | and READ about them | 00:57 |
nimbiotics | i dnt know much about this, but i think ive got to replace pulseaudio. how do i do that? | 00:57 |
holstein | nimbiotics: nah | 00:57 |
holstein | you dont | 00:57 |
holstein | for example | 00:58 |
nimbiotics | its all messed up | 00:58 |
holstein | there is a metapackage | 00:58 |
holstein | ubuntustudio-audio | 00:58 |
holstein | you install that | 00:58 |
holstein | and you get JACK and ardour | 00:58 |
holstein | and other goodies | 00:58 |
holstein | ubuntustudio-audio-plugins | 00:58 |
holstein | those are the audio plugins | 00:58 |
nimbiotics | will it replace pulseaudio? | 00:58 |
holstein | no | 00:58 |
nimbiotics | how can i replace pulseaudio? | 00:58 |
holstein | you will have to trouble shoot that separately | 00:59 |
holstein | what is the issue? | 00:59 |
nimbiotics | long story ... | 00:59 |
nimbiotics | have been trying to merge a sink and a source and after all the testing ive done, all ive got is messdup stuff | 01:00 |
holstein | well, i would probably google 'ubuntu maverick 10.10 remove pulse audio' | 01:00 |
holstein | you dont really replace it | 01:00 |
holstein | JACK will run usually regardless | 01:00 |
holstein | but, thats not really the purpose of JACK | 01:01 |
nimbiotics | i dnt want to make my life more complicated, all i need to do is be able to record phone calls i make thru google voice | 01:01 |
holstein | nimbiotics: OH | 01:01 |
holstein | i remember you ;) | 01:01 |
holstein | you didnt just script that? | 01:01 |
nimbiotics | yes, we were talking last nite | 01:01 |
holstein | just script it, and put a shortcut on the desktop | 01:01 |
nimbiotics | now i cant even create the loopbacks i need cause i get an error (Connection failure: Connection terminated) | 01:02 |
nimbiotics | so not even the scripts will do | 01:02 |
holstein | i suppose you could try reinstalling pulse | 01:02 |
holstein | no reason why you need to replace pulse | 01:02 |
holstein | BUT you can get rid of it | 01:02 |
nimbiotics | i woudl like to completley remove it and reinstall, how can i do that? | 01:03 |
holstein | removing pulse is tricky | 01:04 |
holstein | i would try selecting it in synaptic | 01:04 |
holstein | and select 'reinstall' | 01:04 |
holstein | and see how that goes | 01:04 |
nimbiotics | ok, hope that works, ty | 01:05 |
holstein | i would read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio | 01:06 |
holstein | ACTUALLY, if it were me, i would just reinstall ;) | 01:07 |
holstein | BUT, if i wanted to try and repair, i would read that ^^ | 01:07 |
holstein | prolly take me about 15 minutes to reinstall ubuntu | 01:08 |
nimbiotics | i uninstalled pulseaudio, deleted default.pa and am installing again ... will let you know | 01:09 |
nimbiotics | well, lloks like it worked | 01:11 |
holstein | sweet :) | 01:11 |
nimbiotics | will take me a while to test further | 01:12 |
nimbiotics | thanks again ... i will most surely bother you again in a while | 01:12 |
holstein | hehe | 01:12 |
holstein | nimbiotics: i'll probably be here :) | 01:12 |
nimbiotics | hope so. so far you've been my only angel | 01:12 |
holstein | lol | 01:13 |
memothejanitor | hi is there an app on ubuntu studio like the software manager on reg ubuntu? | 17:48 |
memothejanitor | so i can install custom packages | 17:49 |
WACOMalt | Heyo folks. I am having an issue with my recent Ubuntu Studio 10.10 install. The install went fine, but on boot I first get an error about missing dependencies.dep, but that seems to not cause anything. After that I get the loading screen with some graphical glitches on the right hand side. After that (only one letter in) the full screen turns to graphical glitches | 18:04 |
WACOMalt | I'm assuming graphics issues. I'm on a Nvidia 250 GT | 18:05 |
WACOMalt | is anyone actually active in here? I hate lurkers... | 18:07 |
WACOMalt | http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_2KCPeH1nc | 18:29 |
WACOMalt | PLEASE SOMEONE HELP WITH THIS | 18:29 |
WACOMalt | http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_2KCPeH1nc | 18:34 |
WACOMalt | help please | 18:34 |
WACOMalt | Is there anybody out there? | 18:40 |
WACOMalt | Just nod if you can hear me | 18:40 |
WACOMalt | Is there anyone at home? | 18:41 |
WACOMalt | Why are these 23 people in the chatroom? Sign out when you arent talking... jesus | 18:41 |
WACOMalt | Come on, now | 18:43 |
WACOMalt | I here you're feeling down | 18:43 |
WACOMalt | Well I can ease your pain, get you on your feet again. | 18:43 |
WACOMalt | There is no pain you are recieving | 18:44 |
WACOMalt | and screw it.. later folks. Sorry for the spam, but testing for any live ones in here. | 18:44 |
WACOMalt | laters. | 18:44 |
WACOMalt | Hi folks :p I'm back! | 19:02 |
WACOMalt | and looks like some of you may be too now! | 19:02 |
holstein | WACOMalt: i had that error once | 19:03 |
holstein | luckily i had an older kernel around | 19:03 |
WACOMalt | really? | 19:03 |
WACOMalt | oh god that sounds complicated to fix... | 19:03 |
holstein | i booted in with an older kernel | 19:03 |
holstein | and reinstalled the problematice kernel | 19:03 |
holstein | and all was good | 19:04 |
holstein | good news is | 19:04 |
holstein | this is not ubuntustudio specific | 19:04 |
holstein | SO you can find help anywhere | 19:04 |
holstein | but, that worked for me | 19:04 |
WACOMalt | ok awesome. Now... I dont have an older kernel... | 19:05 |
WACOMalt | so how can I go about this? | 19:06 |
holstein | http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1592062 | 19:06 |
WACOMalt | problem is... | 19:07 |
holstein | im not sure | 19:07 |
WACOMalt | My system doesnt boot | 19:07 |
holstein | i never have only one kernel around for long | 19:07 |
holstein | its a good idea to have a couple | 19:07 |
holstein | IF you get an update to the new one | 19:07 |
holstein | which is what happened to me | 19:07 |
holstein | i got an update to a recent generic kernel | 19:08 |
holstein | i think i booted into a realtime kernel i had as well | 19:08 |
holstein | to fix it | 19:08 |
holstein | WACOMalt: thats a good question though | 19:08 |
holstein | i think you can boot into that recorvery mode | 19:08 |
holstein | http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=157250 | 19:09 |
holstein | anyhow, in this channel | 19:10 |
holstein | you need to allow a couple hours or a day for a response | 19:10 |
holstein | BUT, that error is general | 19:10 |
holstein | and related to the generic kernel | 19:10 |
WACOMalt | gotcha. So forums are better probably | 19:11 |
holstein | SO you should be able to get that sorted out in another more active channel | 19:11 |
holstein | IF the above info doesnt do it for you :) | 19:11 |
holstein | the email list is quite active as well | 19:11 |
WACOMalt | ok, awesome | 19:12 |
WACOMalt | thanks so much! | 19:13 |
holstein | good luck :) | 19:13 |
WACOMalt | I was able to boot into recovery! | 19:15 |
WACOMalt1 | meaning kernel is fine? just a graphics driver issue maybe? | 19:17 |
WACOMalt1 | booted with failsafe graphics just fine | 19:18 |
holstein | WACOMalt: hey | 19:18 |
holstein | progress :) | 19:18 |
WACOMalt1 | yus! | 19:18 |
WACOMalt1 | installing graphics drivers | 19:19 |
holstein | WACOMalt: did you make a custom xorg.cof? | 19:19 |
holstein | conf* | 19:19 |
holstein | WACOMalt: OH | 19:19 |
WACOMalt1 | not yet | 19:19 |
holstein | yeah, thats a good start | 19:19 |
holstein | nvidia can be a pain | 19:19 |
holstein | i just use the open one | 19:19 |
holstein | i used a knoppix live CD | 19:19 |
WACOMalt1 | I mean failsafe is the full kernel and everything right? So these drivers are likely the issue if I'm booting fine in failsafe graphics? | 19:19 |
WACOMalt1 | I like nvidias graphics. never had an issue | 19:20 |
holstein | to generate me an xorg.conf | 19:20 |
holstein | and i force the open nvidia drive | 19:20 |
holstein | maybe nvu? | 19:20 |
holstein | i forget | 19:20 |
holstein | its been a while :) | 19:20 |
WACOMalt1 | lol | 19:20 |
WACOMalt1 | well Ima try this first | 19:20 |
holstein | WACOMalt1: i think thats a safe assumption | 19:20 |
=== WACOMalt1 is now known as WACOMalt | ||
holstein | and, you should be able to use the nvidia drivers with the generic kernel | 19:21 |
holstein | without issue | 19:21 |
holstein | i did some tests, and got the nvidia drivers installed on my hardware | 19:21 |
holstein | i had some issues with the realtime kernel then | 19:22 |
holstein | so i went back to the other one | 19:22 |
holstein | theres a patch now though | 19:22 |
WACOMalt | what is the realtime kernel? | 19:22 |
holstein | my audio rig is on lucid | 19:22 |
WACOMalt | that is a new one to me | 19:22 |
holstein | WACOMalt: theres not a realtime kernel for maverick right now | 19:23 |
WACOMalt | maverick? | 19:23 |
WACOMalt | oh dur | 19:23 |
holstein | WACOMalt: thats what your running right? | 19:23 |
holstein | maverick? | 19:23 |
holstein | 10.10? | 19:23 |
WACOMalt | yah | 19:23 |
WACOMalt | what is the realtime kernel? | 19:23 |
holstein | bacically allows lower latency | 19:23 |
holstein | for audio recording | 19:24 |
holstein | becoming unecessary though | 19:24 |
WACOMalt | I need that. Older PC here | 19:24 |
holstein | with the progress of the generic kernel | 19:24 |
WACOMalt | I use ASIO 4all on my windows side | 19:24 |
holstein | and the -lowlatency one | 19:24 |
WACOMalt | and of course coreaudio on my OSX side | 19:24 |
holstein | WACOMalt: you probably dont *need* it | 19:24 |
holstein | if you want to plug a guitar in | 19:24 |
WACOMalt | I am planning to do Midi control boards | 19:25 |
WACOMalt | those like to haeva lot of lag | 19:25 |
holstein | and use ubuntu as a realtime effect processor | 19:25 |
holstein | yeah, or that | 19:25 |
holstein | WACOMalt: midi triggering | 19:25 |
holstein | well, you can come back to lucid if you need it :) | 19:25 |
WACOMalt | All I know is on windows It had lag without ASIO and on OSX it had lag without coreaudio | 19:25 |
WACOMalt | lol | 19:25 |
holstein | probably wont though | 19:25 |
WACOMalt | why isnt the realtime kernel on maverick yet? | 19:25 |
holstein | pretty sure the -lowlatency one is in the repos | 19:26 |
holstein | WACOMalt: theres not a yet | 19:26 |
holstein | it wont be there | 19:26 |
holstein | ever | 19:26 |
WACOMalt | thought that was a big part of studio? | 19:26 |
holstein | unless there is a PPA | 19:26 |
holstein | and there is one | 19:26 |
WACOMalt | ? | 19:26 |
holstein | but its not ready yet | 19:26 |
holstein | and its challenging work maintaining it | 19:26 |
WACOMalt | gotcha | 19:26 |
holstein | and like i said, the need for it is becoming less all the time | 19:26 |
WACOMalt | well I'll see how this goers | 19:27 |
WACOMalt | hope I can find drivers for the USB midi on my yamaha keyboard | 19:27 |
holstein | yeah | 19:27 |
holstein | check out #opensourcemusicians if you get a chance :) | 19:27 |
holstein | WACOMalt: in the future | 19:28 |
holstein | you can use a live CD | 19:28 |
holstein | and run lspci | 19:28 |
holstein | and lsusb | 19:28 |
holstein | and test all te hardware | 19:28 |
holstein | the* | 19:28 |
holstein | you wont be able to install all the ubuntustudio metapackges in ram ;) | 19:29 |
holstein | but you can get an idea of hardware support | 19:29 |
WACOMalt | okeedoke | 19:29 |
WACOMalt | thanks man | 19:30 |
holstein | WACOMalt: anytime | 19:30 |
* holstein gotta run... BBL | 19:30 | |
WACOMalt | Ok, I'm off to install all my provideo apps :P | 19:30 |
WACOMalt | cya | 19:30 |
