head_victimSo many jokes, so little time.04:15
mbergamohey everyone, sorry to bother you but i have a quick question. i set up a partition for lubuntu but my wireless (and wired) internet wont work. I have a broadcom BCM4321 and it works on Ubuntu, but without any internet connection I'm struggling with getting it on my Lubuntu 10.04. I downloaded the appropiate .deb file but whenever I try to move it from Ubuntu to my Lubuntu partition it says 'error opening file, permission deni06:38
mbergamoed'. I tried sudo cp <.deb_file> /dev/sda5/home/<user>/  but its saying "no such file or directory", does anyone have any idea on how to set this up?06:38
phillwmbergamo: I think it's beacause you have to agree online to their Terms and conditions, let me do a bit of digging.06:45
phillwmbergamo: have read of the stickie on http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=336 if it does not help then post a question with the lubuntu tag on it.06:46
mbergamophillw: thank you, i've been looking for the last like 2-3 days but can't find anything. all the info for ubuntu (which i used to get hooked up on this partition) don't seem to work for lubuntu06:46
phillwI used a wired connection to install the broadcom driver on a laptop, so I cannot really help if you want to do it by a deb.06:48
mbergamophillw: yeah thats what i did for this ubuntu partition i'm on now, but for some reason my wired connection won't work for lubuntu either. i feel like it would be so much easier that way.06:48
phillwThis is not really advised, but when you get permission denied when you issue a command type in sudo before it06:52
phillwmbergamo: you are taking off the self protection that *buntu has as you are "forcing" it to carry out a command06:53
mbergamophillw: yeah i've tried using sudo cp <mount, file, etc> but it's still coming bacj with an error.06:54
phillwdo an ls first an ensure you've got the path and filename correct.06:55
ubuXubu try sudo dhclient eth007:02
ubuXubuOpen a Terminal and input the command: lspci07:07
ubuXubuThis will list all pci devices.07:07
ubuXubuWhat does it say for network adapter?07:07

mbergamo0b:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4321 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 05)07:11
mbergamooops he left07:12
head_victimAre you sure it's linked to /dev/sda5 ?07:15
head_victimI don't think it's a priviledge thing it's suggest the file isn't where you're pointing to.07:16
mbergamoyeah that was my impression as well07:16
mbergamobut i'm on gparted and the partition is /dev/sda507:17
head_victimI would double and triple check the location if it's still not working put it on a cd or usb you can insert in the lubuntu so that you are certain you have access to it and it's readable07:17
head_victimmbergamo: have you mounted it?07:17
head_victimIt might not be automounting if it's not associated with that boot07:18
mbergamoyes its mounted but i did it outside of the terminal. its listed as '20GB filesystem' or '5d55b95d-...-...-etc'07:18
mbergamoboth of which i have tried :/07:20
mbergamohead_victim: sorry, i'm a total noob when it comes to setting up a wireless connection, without a wired connection07:21
head_victimThat's ok I've never used wireless under Ubuntu in about 3 years.07:22
head_victimOk can you find the file with a graphical browser (PCmanFM)?07:24
mbergamothe file manager? yes i can.07:26
head_victimCan you click and drag to the desktop or somewhere else?07:26
head_victimOr does that give the same error?07:26
mbergamothe broadcom.deb file or the PCmanFM07:28
head_victimok what I suggest is if you type into a terminal "sudo chown YourUserName /part/to/file" and then retry the copying. This will tell the file that you own it rather than the other user where it's currently located.07:28
head_victimThe deb file07:28
mbergamoyeah i can send it to the desktop mo problem. i just cant send it to my root or the partition07:29
mbergamoi figured it might be a chown/chmod issue07:30
mbergamodo i do the chown on the lubuntu partition or the ubuntu one?07:31
head_victimJust the file you want to copy.07:31
head_victimSo it would be "sudo chown YourUserName /path/to/driver.deb07:32
mbergamook i did that without issue07:33
head_victimSo now try to copy it again07:34
mbergamowhen i try and just drag it from my "Downloads" folder to the partition it says 'Error opening file '/media/5d55b95d-2e22-49af-bc8e-525c77e0565d/bcmwl-kernel-source_5.60.48.36+bdcom-0ubuntu3_i386.deb': Permission denied'. when i put in 'sudo cp bcmwl-kernel-source_5.60.48.36+bdcom-0ubuntu3_i386.deb /dev/sda5/home/mike' (from the Downloads folder) it says 'cp: accessing `/dev/sda5/home/mike': Not a directory'07:35
head_victimDo you have a folder that is in /home called /mike ?07:38
mbergamoyup07:39
head_victimAnd is it on /dev/sda5 ?07:40
head_victimI would try something like sudo cp driver-long-name-here.deb /home/mike/07:40
head_victimOr is the /dev/sda5 the lubuntu install sorry I"m getting myself confused.07:41
head_victimI still say if you have a usb drive just use that.07:41
mbergamook i'll try the usb07:41
head_victimI have to head out to pick up the wife from work.07:43
head_victimI should be back in 30 - 45 minutes though. Hopefully the USB works or someone else can help out though07:44
mbergamook thanks a lot head_victim07:44
mbergamoi appreciate the help07:44
head_victimSo yeah try to copy to usb then boot into lubuntu and copy from usb to lubuntu folder and that should work07:45
mbergamook will do, thanks!07:45
head_victimHow did it go mbergamo ?08:18
mbergamoi moved this file over (http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/bcmwl-kernel-source). and it said it depends on the other 4 packages listed, so i brought those over and it said they are all dependent on even more programs.08:20
mbergamoi'm thinking about just working my way all the way down :/08:20
mbergamothats why this would be so much easier with an internet connection, i could just bring all these down with one simple apt-get08:22
head_victimHmmm08:31
head_victimmbergamo: hang on a tick I have a guide that you will find REALLY useful08:32
head_victimhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Synaptic/PackageDownloadScript08:32
head_victimYou go to your lubuntu, open synaptic and select what it is you want to install (it should auto select dependencies) and instead of installing you select File and then generate package download script08:33
mbergamoi'll give this a read, thank you very much :)08:33
head_victimIt then saves a script you can take to your computer WITH the internet and automatically get all the required packages to put on your usb to take back to lubuntu08:34
head_victimSorry if I had of thought it was going to be more than one package I would have started with this.08:34
head_victimIf you lived in Brisbane I could just bring around my drive with a copy of the entire repository on it :)08:44
mbergamoNew Jersey, US, only half way around the world, too far?08:46
head_victimHah carrier pigeon?08:46
mbergamothat poor bird08:49
head_victimWell I have to head off again. It should do what you need as long as the instructions are clear enough.08:51
mbergamoyeah i'm trying to follow it step by step08:51
mbergamothanks again for the help08:51
head_victimNo worries mate, sorry I can't hang around longer.08:51

kristian-aalborgI have slitaz on it already, so I might be asking for some help w/ partitioning12:47
bioterrorkristian-aalborg, this one is easy, choose "use entire disk" ;)12:49
kristian-aalborgpffft :P12:49
kristian-aalborghi bioterror, I believe we have met before12:50
bioterrorwe have12:50
kristian-aalborg3.2 gigs of space!?12:51
bioterror?12:51
kristian-aalborgthe installer says I should have that12:51
bioterrorit's suggested12:52
kristian-aalborgI have 1g available :(12:52
kristian-aalborgI think I'll get an SD card, they're very cheap now12:52
bioterrorthose are12:52
kristian-aalborgwhat was the name of the Apogee game with the guy called Snake who was battling aliens?12:53
bioterrorthat matches to many games :D12:57
bioterrorby 3D Realms/Apogee12:57
kristian-aalborgoh, it was Bio Menace12:58
kristian-aalborgit was awesome, and the cut scenes were well written pathos12:59
kristian-aalborgbut, does Lubuntu really eat 3,2 gigs on default install?12:59
bioterrornope13:00
bioterrorbut you must have space to grow13:00
bioterrormy installation takes 1.4GB13:00
bioterroratm13:00
kristian-aalborgI have 1 gb available... will that do for the base install?13:05
bioterrorshould do13:06
kristian-aalborganyone tried lubuntu on pre-2000 hardware?13:09
bioterrorsorry, I dont have a museum in here ;)13:20
szczuri did installation on PII 400 MHz/256MB SDRAM 100MHz/6GB HDD/Matrox MGA 200 and Celeron 333 MHZ/256MB SDRAM 133MHz/4GB HDD/GeForce 2 MX 400 and it was working well i'd say :)13:21
szczurMatrox card have 8MB onboard memory and GeForce have 32 MB13:21
szczurWatching movies with gnome-mplayer, browsing with Midori and listening to music with MOC13:23
szczuraverage MEM usage was around 120MB while browsing web (depends od the webpage, forget about flash/heavy JS scripts)13:24
szczurand watching flv movies is rather painful (depends on the resolution, converting to avi helps a lot)13:25
kristian-aalborgflash sucks13:25
kristian-aalborgI might give lubuntu a spin on my old laptop13:26
bioterrorI think you have to give it a spin with 10.0413:27
kristian-aalborgwhat's the default root pw on the installer?... I forgot13:27
bioterrorthere's no root13:27
kristian-aalborghttp://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:77013:27
kristian-aalborgbox is very old... I'd have to tweak lubuntu13:27
bioterror:G13:27
szczurkristian-aalborg, you will have to go with 10.04 since 10.10 kernel dropped suport for i586 CPUs13:28
szczurand i'd recommend installation from mini.iso13:28
kristian-aalborgszczur: thanks, will keep that in mind13:28
bioterrortbqh I would recommend recycling ;)13:29
szczurohh, there's not enough memory13:29
szczur32 MB is waaay below running ubuntu13:29

kristian-aalborgit's a fun project to see how much you can get out of that old box13:29
szczurkristian-aalborg, it will be rather painful experience13:29

kristian-aalborgthinkpads are ace13:34
bioterrornot for that kind of machine13:34
bioterrorthinkpads with black enter key13:34
kristian-aalborgI think it's fun to find the proper apps and setups for a modest machine13:35
kristian-aalborgand typically, the simpler program is better13:35
kristian-aalborgor you could do things in a single command that your *buntu habits have you install a huge GUI for13:36
kristian-aalborgI want to run parted before install, but it wants a pw?13:37

kristian-aalborgI made an ext4 part. out of the remaining hdd14:29

kristian-aalborgwhere do I do that?14:30
bioterrorwhen you chose to format that space as a ext4, you usually sai that it's /14:31
