rigved | hi | 10:15 |
rigved | does xubuntu have something similar to the evolution, empathy and a notification area etc. | 10:15 |
TheSheep | rigved: it has notification area, pidgin is the default communicator, mozilla thunderbird is the default mail reader | 10:25 |
maitrey | Hi, I can't setup the permissions on my fresh formated pendrive. I have gone like one hour through all the chown's and etc. but it doesn't work. It's still mounted only for the root user. someone can help? thanks | 10:27 |
rigved | TheSheep: ok. | 10:28 |
rigved | i have a laptop which can only run ubuntu in low graphics mode. so will i be able to run xubuntu on it in normal mode then? | 10:29 |
maitrey | most probable you'll be running better than in any other distro (maybe except pclos) , but it depends try xubuntu 10.10 I like it a lot. and everything runs flawless. | 10:31 |
TheSheep | rigved: probably not, the drivers for graphics are the same | 10:31 |
rigved | maitrey, TheSheep: thanx for your help | 10:32 |
Dracco | Hello everybody. I was asked to install xubuntu on one of my boss computers. It is a very old peace of junk, but xubuntu handles it. There are only 2 problems I would like to get help with. First, major problem is a little bit odd. While downloading and installing open office suite, when meanwhile i was checking window themes in control panel, computer just logged off. Since then, each time I try to log in, it shows the desktop and logs back off. | 12:15 |
Dracco | When I swap to tty2 console and log in there, attempting to switch back to graphical mode ends up with black screen or sentence "[OK] PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions [OK] *Checking battery state...". What can be done about this? It is a desktop so it has no battery. | 12:15 |
Dracco | *bump* | 12:22 |
psycho_oreos | no xubuntu version used? | 12:24 |
psycho_oreos | s/used/mentioned/ | 12:24 |
ubuXubu | just use abiworf open orfice is too much for it | 12:26 |
ubuXubu | abiword | 12:26 |
Dracco | But I cannot even log in | 12:26 |
Dracco | xubuntu version 10.04 | 12:27 |
Dracco | fully updated | 12:27 |
psycho_oreos | any dist-upgrades? or version upgrades (i.e. from 9.10 -> 10.04) | 12:27 |
Dracco | nope, fresh install from cd downloaded from ubuntu.com | 12:28 |
ubuXubu | i had 904 in my oldie ...it couldnt handle 1004, let me install it but hung fatally during updates | 12:28 |
Dracco | it worked well with update, juts logged out suddenly while installing ooo | 12:29 |
ubuXubu | but ill bet if u try it on ext3 u will have better luck | 12:29 |
Dracco | hmm, might be ext4 fault? | 12:31 |
ubuXubu | imo...old machines and ext4=issues | 12:31 |
ubuXubu | i could not make buntu run on my oldies in ext4 | 12:32 |
ubuXubu | my newer ones yes | 12:32 |
Dracco | well its not that old, 512mb ram and intel pentium 4 2.26ghz | 12:32 |
ubuXubu | mine were 2,4 with 52 | 12:32 |
ubuXubu | 512 | 12:32 |
ubuXubu | same era dell | 12:32 |
Dracco | and without reinstalling? i want to get rid of it asap | 12:33 |
ubuXubu | i have 2 of those 2.26 also | 12:33 |
ubuXubu | dell gx260 | 12:33 |
TheSheep | it sounds more like some problems with X | 12:35 |
TheSheep | Dracco: anything in ~/.xsessionerrors? | 12:35 |
TheSheep | Dracco: also, try running 'df -h' in console to see if you have any free space left on the disk | 12:35 |
Dracco | checking | 12:36 |
Dracco | 16GB left on system partition and 53GB on home partition should be enough | 12:37 |
Dracco | about sessionerrors | 12:38 |
Dracco | quite long notice in the file | 12:38 |
ubuXubu | but the same machine ran 904 perfect | 12:41 |
Dracco | uhm, could it be a window theme fault? | 12:41 |
ubuXubu | all my other dells with 3.4, and 1-4 gb ran run 1004 beautiful. | 12:44 |
TheSheep | Dracco: yes, could be | 12:47 |
Dracco | ok, so how can i change theme or reset it to default over the terminal? | 12:48 |
TheSheep | Dracco: window manager or gtk theme? | 12:48 |
Dracco | window manager | 12:48 |
TheSheep | edit .config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfwm4.xml | 12:48 |
Dracco | ok gonna try | 12:49 |
TheSheep | you can use nano for that | 12:49 |
Dracco | that i know ;) | 12:50 |
Dracco | ok restarting and hope it will work | 12:50 |
Dracco | works :D | 12:51 |
Dracco | so it was the theme | 12:51 |
Dracco | theme Wildbush | 12:52 |
Dracco | thank you all for your help :) | 12:53 |
TheSheep | glad I could help | 12:54 |
Dracco | :) | 12:54 |
Dracco | now its time to set up samba and return that junk to my boss :D | 12:54 |
Dracco | ok im out to do that :) cya all and once again thank you for your help :) | 12:55 |
crawler | hi, can someone confirm this behavior please?: on a xubuntu 10.10 using deluge 1.3.1 (ppa). when in deluge, right-clicking a torrent and choosing "Open Folder" in the context menu causes deluge to use 100% cpu until it quits. | 13:27 |
TheSheep | crawler: ppas are not part of the distribution | 13:53 |
TheSheep | crawler: so report the bug to the owner of that ppa | 13:53 |
crawler | TheSheep: thanks, i am doing that right now..i only asked if someone (by chance using the same software version) can confirm. | 13:54 |
TheSheep | ah, sorry | 13:56 |
crawler | no worries, i'm still getting the hang of things :-) | 13:58 |
Gadi | does xubuntu have its own gui for display settings (xrandr), or does it use upstream xfce4's display settings for that? | 14:13 |
Sysi | you can use arandr if xfce's display settings don't work | 14:14 |
Gadi | thanks. I am looking for a good GUI that handles dual monitor layouts but does not have all of the deps as gnome's display settings gui (which is by far the nicest I have seen) | 14:16 |
mnemoc | hi, beside installing xfce4, what do I need to install to an ubuntu 10.10 to Xfce sessions look like xubuntu's ? | 16:17 |
charlie-tca | xubuntu-desktop is the actual package to install everything | 16:18 |
mnemoc | oh, thanks | 16:19 |
charlie-tca | You could then switch between Ubuntu and Xubuntu using "choose session" in the login screen | 16:19 |
mnemoc | if i'm running over NX, what "command" should I run to get "Xubuntu"? | 16:20 |
charlie-tca | I don't know NX myself. I just use "sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" | 16:20 |
mnemoc | i'll install the missing packages, mutilate the home and see what I get when asking for Xfce | 16:21 |
mnemoc | thanks so much | 16:21 |
mnemoc | oh, it changed the gdm theme :p | 16:27 |
mnemoc | uhm... running /usr/share/xubuntu/session.sh (from xubuntu.desktop) I still get a "plain old" xfce, different than when logging in in gdm | 17:14 |
charlie-tca | hm, tried running /usr/bin/xfwm4 & in that session? | 17:28 |
charlie-tca | it's just a guess. I think it has to do with how the session is set up from GMD vs running session.sh | 17:30 |
mnemoc | still get "plain old" xfce | 17:32 |
charlie-tca | someone else might have the answer. We do have a few users around that run from a minimal install | 17:39 |
mnemoc | maybe the difference is that my installation has gnome-ubuntu as default | 17:40 |
=== `mOOse` is now known as m00se | ||
mnemoc | the local users of the LTSP are already ranting against the colors of gnome-ubuntu 10.10 :p | 17:54 |
charlie-tca | and I thought that was pretty good color | 17:57 |
mnemoc | maybe "too happy" for them | 17:58 |
charlie-tca | heh | 17:58 |
xubuntu_froob | hey guys need a bit of help killing the Xserver | 19:13 |
charlie-tca | You want it dead? | 19:13 |
xubuntu_froob | yup | 19:13 |
xubuntu_froob | want it dead | 19:13 |
xubuntu_froob | gotta install nvidia binaries | 19:14 |
charlie-tca | can't just install from hardware drivers? | 19:14 |
xubuntu_froob | nope its the new 96 drivers on 10.10 | 19:14 |
xubuntu_froob | bug report says the newest ones work | 19:14 |
xubuntu_froob | and they are only available as binary right now -_- | 19:14 |
xubuntu_froob | pain in the arse really...but i want my 3d acceleration | 19:15 |
xubuntu_froob | theres a downgrading to the old Xorg option but i cant find the post that i used last time | 19:16 |
charlie-tca | Easiest way I know is to boot into recovery mode | 19:16 |
xubuntu_froob | ah so recovery will do the trick on not letting Xorg start at all?? | 19:16 |
xubuntu_froob | ive killed the damn gdm binary but im still runnin without it | 19:16 |
xubuntu_froob | didnt killall.....but then again | 19:17 |
xubuntu_froob | lemme give this a few more shotts ^_^ | 19:17 |
charlie-tca | Usually just boots up to a menu, choosing root gives a text login screen | 19:17 |
xubuntu442 | chat during install is fun | 20:12 |
xubuntu442 | but how is that possible | 20:12 |
xubuntu442 | weird | 20:12 |
Sysi | "through internet" | 20:12 |
xubuntu442 | most probably | 20:13 |
jonathan | anyone here? | 21:51 |
charlie-tca | Please ask your question all in one line. All of us are volunteers and will attempt to answer if we know. | 21:51 |
jonathan | How do you change the default programs? | 21:51 |
charlie-tca | Install different applications from the software center, remove the default applications | 21:52 |
jonathan | any alternatives? it tells me if i try to uninstall thunar it will also uninstall xubuntu desktop system | 21:54 |
charlie-tca | Thunar is a basic part of xubuntu. You can instll nautilus or pcfileman, but you will have to change a few things to make them work as default | 22:00 |
jonathan | could you guide me in the right direction, or is it easier just to google it? | 22:01 |
charlie-tca | xubuntu-desktop is a meta-package. It is only required to upgrade to the next release | 22:01 |
charlie-tca | I don't have a good guide, myself. | 22:02 |
jonathan | lol | 22:02 |
jonathan | thanks for the help anyways | 22:02 |
charlie-tca | If the desktop package is removed, it does not break things in the current release | 22:02 |
jonathan | what does the desktop package do? | 22:03 |
charlie-tca | it makes sure all the parts and applications for Xubuntu are installed. Otherwise, you have to install them all manually, and there are many | 22:03 |
jonathan | one more question. can i resize the partition my xubuntu is currently on? i was expecting to be able to install programs on a different hard drive. i know it's possible, but i also heard it's a huge hassel | 22:05 |
charlie-tca | You can resize it using the desktop cd. You can not resize a partition in use at the time | 22:05 |
charlie-tca | programs in linux take a minimal amount of room. | 22:06 |
charlie-tca | I can install a full working Xubuntu desktop with many applications not installed by default in less than 10GB | 22:06 |
jonathan | i still only left 500mb extra on my xubuntu partition, and i am working with a 19.6gb hard drive with windows xp already on it | 22:07 |
charlie-tca | I see. Yes, resizing using the desktop cd would probably be a good option | 22:08 |
charlie-tca | As long as you do not create a new partition, it should work fine. Please backup anything important first, though, including windows | 22:09 |
jonathan | thank you for your help. i'm going to try that now. | 22:09 |
jonathan | thank you for the help. i am now resizing the partition | 22:15 |
jonathan | how do i add desktop shortcuts? | 23:16 |
jonathan | could i have some help please? | 23:20 |
Sysi | be patient | 23:20 |
Sysi | what kind of shortcut? | 23:20 |
jonathan | to an application, like firefox | 23:20 |
Sysi | right click → add launcher | 23:21 |
jonathan | thanks | 23:21 |
jonathan | how do you change the default file browser? | 23:34 |
