maitrey Hi, I can't setup the permissions on my fresh formated pendrive. I have gone like one hour through all the chown's and etc. but it doesn't work. It's still mounted only for the root user. someone can help? thanks10:27
rigvedTheSheep: ok.10:28
rigvedi have a laptop which can only run ubuntu in low graphics mode. so will i be able to run xubuntu on it in normal mode then?10:29
maitreymost probable you'll be running better than in any other distro (maybe except pclos) , but it depends try xubuntu 10.10 I like it a lot. and everything runs flawless.10:31
TheSheeprigved: probably not, the drivers for graphics are the same10:31
rigvedmaitrey, TheSheep: thanx for your help10:32
DraccoHello everybody. I was asked to install xubuntu on one of my boss computers. It is a very old peace of junk, but xubuntu handles it. There are only 2 problems I would like to get help with. First, major problem is a little bit odd. While downloading and installing open office suite, when meanwhile i was checking window themes in control panel, computer just logged off. Since then, each time I try to log in, it shows the desktop and logs back off.12:15
DraccoWhen I swap to tty2 console and log in there, attempting to switch back to graphical mode ends up with black screen or sentence "[OK] PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions [OK] *Checking battery state...". What can be done about this? It is a desktop so it has no battery.12:15
Dracco*bump*12:22

crawlerhi, can someone confirm this behavior please?: on a xubuntu 10.10 using deluge 1.3.1 (ppa).  when in deluge, right-clicking a torrent and choosing "Open Folder" in the context menu causes deluge to use 100% cpu until it quits.13:27
TheSheepcrawler: ppas are not part of the distribution13:53
TheSheepcrawler: so report the bug to the owner of that ppa13:53
crawlerTheSheep: thanks, i am doing that right now..i only asked if someone (by chance using the same software version) can confirm.13:54
TheSheepah, sorry13:56
crawlerno worries, i'm still getting the hang of things :-)13:58
Gadidoes xubuntu have its own gui for display settings (xrandr), or does it use upstream xfce4's display settings for that?14:13
Sysiyou can use arandr if xfce's display settings don't work14:14
Gadithanks. I am looking for a good GUI that handles dual monitor layouts but does not have all of the deps as gnome's display settings gui (which is by far the nicest I have seen)14:16
mnemochi, beside installing xfce4, what do I need to install to an ubuntu 10.10 to Xfce sessions look like xubuntu's ?16:17
charlie-tcaxubuntu-desktop is the actual package to install everything16:18
mnemocoh, thanks16:19
charlie-tcaYou could then switch between Ubuntu and Xubuntu using "choose session" in the login screen16:19
mnemocif i'm running over NX, what "command" should I run to get "Xubuntu"?16:20
charlie-tcaI don't know NX myself. I just use "sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop"16:20
mnemoci'll install the missing packages, mutilate the home and see what I get when asking for Xfce16:21
mnemocthanks so much16:21
mnemocoh, it changed the gdm theme :p16:27
mnemocuhm... running /usr/share/xubuntu/session.sh (from xubuntu.desktop) I still get a "plain old" xfce, different than when logging in in gdm17:14
charlie-tcahm, tried running /usr/bin/xfwm4 & in that session?17:28
charlie-tcait's just a guess. I think it has to do with how the session is set up from GMD vs running session.sh17:30
mnemocstill get "plain old" xfce17:32
charlie-tcasomeone else might have the answer. We do have a few users around that run from a minimal install17:39
mnemocmaybe the difference is that my installation has gnome-ubuntu as default17:40
=== `mOOse` is now known as m00se
mnemocthe local users of the LTSP are already ranting against the colors of gnome-ubuntu 10.10 :p17:54
charlie-tcaand I thought that was pretty good color17:57
mnemocmaybe "too happy" for them17:58
charlie-tcaheh17:58

xubuntu_froobgotta install nvidia binaries19:14
charlie-tcacan't just install from hardware drivers?19:14
xubuntu_froobnope its the new 96 drivers on 10.1019:14
xubuntu_froobbug report says the newest ones work19:14
xubuntu_frooband they are only available as binary right now -_-19:14
xubuntu_froobpain in the arse really...but i want my 3d acceleration19:15
xubuntu_froobtheres a downgrading to the old Xorg option but i cant find the post that i used last time19:16
charlie-tcaEasiest way I know is to boot into recovery mode19:16
xubuntu_froobah so recovery will do the trick on not letting Xorg start at all??19:16
xubuntu_froobive killed the damn gdm binary but im still runnin without it19:16
xubuntu_froobdidnt killall.....but then again19:17

xubuntu442weird20:12
Sysi"through internet"20:12
xubuntu442most probably20:13
jonathananyone here?21:51
charlie-tcaPlease ask your question all in one line. All of us are volunteers and will attempt to answer if we know.21:51
jonathanHow do you change the default programs?21:51
charlie-tcaInstall different applications from the software center, remove the default applications21:52
jonathanany alternatives? it tells me if i try to uninstall thunar it will also uninstall xubuntu desktop system21:54
charlie-tcaThunar is a basic part of xubuntu. You can instll nautilus or pcfileman, but you will have to change a few things to make them work as default22:00
jonathancould you guide me in the right direction, or is it easier just to google it?22:01
charlie-tcaxubuntu-desktop is a meta-package. It is only required to upgrade to the next release22:01
charlie-tcaI don't have a good guide, myself.22:02
jonathanlol22:02
jonathanthanks for the help anyways22:02
charlie-tcaIf the desktop package is removed, it does not break things in the current release22:02
jonathanwhat does the desktop package do?22:03
charlie-tcait makes sure all the parts and applications for Xubuntu are installed. Otherwise, you have to install them all manually, and there are many22:03
jonathanone more question. can i resize the partition my xubuntu is currently on? i was expecting to be able to install programs on a different hard drive. i know it's possible, but i also heard it's a huge hassel22:05
charlie-tcaYou can resize it using the desktop cd. You can not resize a partition in use at the time22:05
charlie-tcaprograms in linux take a minimal amount of room.22:06
charlie-tcaI can install a full working Xubuntu desktop with many applications not installed by default in less than 10GB22:06
jonathani still only left 500mb extra on my xubuntu partition, and i am working with a 19.6gb hard drive with windows xp already on it22:07
charlie-tcaI see. Yes, resizing using the desktop cd would probably be a good option22:08
charlie-tcaAs long as you do not create a new partition, it should work fine. Please backup anything important first, though, including windows22:09
jonathanthank you for your help. i'm going to try that now.22:09
jonathanthank you for the help. i am now resizing the partition22:15
jonathanhow do i add desktop shortcuts?23:16
jonathancould i have some help please?23:20
Sysibe patient23:20
Sysiwhat kind of shortcut?23:20
jonathanto an application, like firefox23:20
Sysiright click → add launcher23:21
jonathanthanks23:21
jonathanhow do you change the default file browser?23:34
