[02:42] hello [02:42] need some help people ... [02:47] never mind [06:04] good morning fishers of code... [06:54] if u install xubutu and it wont go online then what [07:01] ubuXubu, wired or wireless [07:01] wired [07:01] ubuXubu, does ifconfig show eth0 [07:01] if so, try sudo dhclient eth0 [07:02] thank u brb === Sysi_ is now known as Sysi [10:15] hi [10:15] does xubuntu have something similar to the evolution, empathy and a notification area etc. [10:25] rigved: it has notification area, pidgin is the default communicator, mozilla thunderbird is the default mail reader [10:27] Hi, I can't setup the permissions on my fresh formated pendrive. I have gone like one hour through all the chown's and etc. but it doesn't work. It's still mounted only for the root user. someone can help? thanks [10:28] TheSheep: ok. [10:29] i have a laptop which can only run ubuntu in low graphics mode. so will i be able to run xubuntu on it in normal mode then? [10:31] most probable you'll be running better than in any other distro (maybe except pclos) , but it depends try xubuntu 10.10 I like it a lot. and everything runs flawless. [10:31] rigved: probably not, the drivers for graphics are the same [10:32] maitrey, TheSheep: thanx for your help [12:15] Hello everybody. I was asked to install xubuntu on one of my boss computers. It is a very old peace of junk, but xubuntu handles it. There are only 2 problems I would like to get help with. First, major problem is a little bit odd. While downloading and installing open office suite, when meanwhile i was checking window themes in control panel, computer just logged off. Since then, each time I try to log in, it shows the desktop and logs back off. [12:15] When I swap to tty2 console and log in there, attempting to switch back to graphical mode ends up with black screen or sentence "[OK] PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions [OK] *Checking battery state...". What can be done about this? It is a desktop so it has no battery. [12:22] *bump* [12:24] no xubuntu version used? [12:24] s/used/mentioned/ [12:26] just use abiworf open orfice is too much for it [12:26] abiword [12:26] But I cannot even log in [12:27] xubuntu version 10.04 [12:27] fully updated [12:27] any dist-upgrades? or version upgrades (i.e. from 9.10 -> 10.04) [12:28] nope, fresh install from cd downloaded from ubuntu.com [12:28] i had 904 in my oldie ...it couldnt handle 1004, let me install it but hung fatally during updates [12:29] it worked well with update, juts logged out suddenly while installing ooo [12:29] but ill bet if u try it on ext3 u will have better luck [12:31] hmm, might be ext4 fault? [12:31] imo...old machines and ext4=issues [12:32] i could not make buntu run on my oldies in ext4 [12:32] my newer ones yes [12:32] well its not that old, 512mb ram and intel pentium 4 2.26ghz [12:32] mine were 2,4 with 52 [12:32] 512 [12:32] same era dell [12:33] and without reinstalling? i want to get rid of it asap [12:33] i have 2 of those 2.26 also [12:33] dell gx260 [12:35] it sounds more like some problems with X [12:35] Dracco: anything in ~/.xsessionerrors? [12:35] Dracco: also, try running 'df -h' in console to see if you have any free space left on the disk [12:36] checking [12:37] 16GB left on system partition and 53GB on home partition should be enough [12:38] about sessionerrors [12:38] quite long notice in the file [12:41] but the same machine ran 904 perfect [12:41] uhm, could it be a window theme fault? [12:44] all my other dells with 3.4, and 1-4 gb ran run 1004 beautiful. [12:47] Dracco: yes, could be [12:48] ok, so how can i change theme or reset it to default over the terminal? [12:48] Dracco: window manager or gtk theme? [12:48] window manager [12:48] edit .config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfwm4.xml [12:49] ok gonna try [12:49] you can use nano for that [12:50] that i know ;) [12:50] ok restarting and hope it will work [12:51] works :D [12:51] so it was the theme [12:52] theme Wildbush [12:53] thank you all for your help :) [12:54] glad I could help [12:54] :) [12:54] now its time to set up samba and return that junk to my boss :D [12:55] ok im out to do that :) cya all and once again thank you for your help :) [13:27] hi, can someone confirm this behavior please?: on a xubuntu 10.10 using deluge 1.3.1 (ppa). when in deluge, right-clicking a torrent and choosing "Open Folder" in the context menu causes deluge to use 100% cpu until it quits. [13:53] crawler: ppas are not part of the distribution [13:53] crawler: so report the bug to the owner of that ppa [13:54] TheSheep: thanks, i am doing that right now..i only asked if someone (by chance using the same software version) can confirm. [13:56] ah, sorry [13:58] no worries, i'm still getting the hang of things :-) [14:13] does xubuntu have its own gui for display settings (xrandr), or does it use upstream xfce4's display settings for that? [14:14] you can use arandr if xfce's display settings don't work [14:16] thanks. I am looking for a good GUI that handles dual monitor layouts but does not have all of the deps as gnome's display settings gui (which is by far the nicest I have seen) [16:17] hi, beside installing xfce4, what do I need to install to an ubuntu 10.10 to Xfce sessions look like xubuntu's ? [16:18] xubuntu-desktop is the actual package to install everything [16:19] oh, thanks [16:19] You could then switch between Ubuntu and Xubuntu using "choose session" in the login screen [16:20] if i'm running over NX, what "command" should I run to get "Xubuntu"? [16:20] I don't know NX myself. I just use "sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" [16:21] i'll install the missing packages, mutilate the home and see what I get when asking for Xfce [16:21] thanks so much [16:27] oh, it changed the gdm theme :p [17:14] uhm... running /usr/share/xubuntu/session.sh (from xubuntu.desktop) I still get a "plain old" xfce, different than when logging in in gdm [17:28] hm, tried running /usr/bin/xfwm4 & in that session? [17:30] it's just a guess. I think it has to do with how the session is set up from GMD vs running session.sh [17:32] still get "plain old" xfce [17:39] someone else might have the answer. We do have a few users around that run from a minimal install [17:40] maybe the difference is that my installation has gnome-ubuntu as default === `mOOse` is now known as m00se [17:54] the local users of the LTSP are already ranting against the colors of gnome-ubuntu 10.10 :p [17:57] and I thought that was pretty good color [17:58] maybe "too happy" for them [17:58] heh [19:13] hey guys need a bit of help killing the Xserver [19:13] You want it dead? [19:13] yup [19:13] want it dead [19:14] gotta install nvidia binaries [19:14] can't just install from hardware drivers? [19:14] nope its the new 96 drivers on 10.10 [19:14] bug report says the newest ones work [19:14] and they are only available as binary right now -_- [19:15] pain in the arse really...but i want my 3d acceleration [19:16] theres a downgrading to the old Xorg option but i cant find the post that i used last time [19:16] Easiest way I know is to boot into recovery mode [19:16] ah so recovery will do the trick on not letting Xorg start at all?? [19:16] ive killed the damn gdm binary but im still runnin without it [19:17] didnt killall.....but then again [19:17] lemme give this a few more shotts ^_^ [19:17] Usually just boots up to a menu, choosing root gives a text login screen [20:12] chat during install is fun [20:12] but how is that possible [20:12] weird [20:12] "through internet" [20:13] most probably [21:51] anyone here? [21:51] Please ask your question all in one line. All of us are volunteers and will attempt to answer if we know. [21:51] How do you change the default programs? [21:52] Install different applications from the software center, remove the default applications [21:54] any alternatives? it tells me if i try to uninstall thunar it will also uninstall xubuntu desktop system [22:00] Thunar is a basic part of xubuntu. You can instll nautilus or pcfileman, but you will have to change a few things to make them work as default [22:01] could you guide me in the right direction, or is it easier just to google it? [22:01] xubuntu-desktop is a meta-package. It is only required to upgrade to the next release [22:02] I don't have a good guide, myself. [22:02] lol [22:02] thanks for the help anyways [22:02] If the desktop package is removed, it does not break things in the current release [22:03] what does the desktop package do? [22:03] it makes sure all the parts and applications for Xubuntu are installed. Otherwise, you have to install them all manually, and there are many [22:05] one more question. can i resize the partition my xubuntu is currently on? i was expecting to be able to install programs on a different hard drive. i know it's possible, but i also heard it's a huge hassel [22:05] You can resize it using the desktop cd. You can not resize a partition in use at the time [22:06] programs in linux take a minimal amount of room. [22:06] I can install a full working Xubuntu desktop with many applications not installed by default in less than 10GB [22:07] i still only left 500mb extra on my xubuntu partition, and i am working with a 19.6gb hard drive with windows xp already on it [22:08] I see. Yes, resizing using the desktop cd would probably be a good option [22:09] As long as you do not create a new partition, it should work fine. Please backup anything important first, though, including windows [22:09] thank you for your help. i'm going to try that now. [22:15] thank you for the help. i am now resizing the partition [23:16] how do i add desktop shortcuts? [23:20] could i have some help please? [23:20] be patient [23:20] what kind of shortcut? [23:20] to an application, like firefox [23:21] right click → add launcher [23:21] thanks [23:34] how do you change the default file browser?
