WACOMaltI have a seq24 question now. I have set up seq24, and it correctly sends midi to ZynAddSubFX when I use the piano keys on the left of the seq24 edit window. But when I arm the sequence and hit play, it will not play any sound.00:40
WACOMaltobviously it is connected correctly, or the keys wouldnt work. But something is broken on the actual play/performance window preventing it from making a peep.00:41
ventrikNot trying to be a dick, but sometimes I do this to myself, is your volume turned up/not muted?00:45
ventrikSame with play back00:45
ventriklol00:45
ventrikI mute my shit all the time and can't figure out why I've got no audio00:46
WACOMaltlol nope00:46
WACOMaltsound works in seq24, just not when actually trying to playback a sequence00:46
ventrikCheck the recording settings00:46
ventrikI don't know that program so I'm just guessing00:47
ventrikOnly thing I've used it DJ Scratch Live and Reason00:47
ventrikAnd oddly AE00:48
WACOMaltheheh00:48
WACOMaltnah, this is all through jack. But there's no connections for seq24. it relys solely on midi ports. Methinks Ima try some other sequencer00:49
ventrikOhhh00:50
ventrikUse Reason00:51
WACOMaltlol00:51
WACOMaltI'm not a big fan of reason actually. It's incredibly capable, but for some reason this setup gets my crewative juices flowing better00:51
ventrikAhh00:52
WACOMaltbut I am int he mood to write music right now, and I simply cant... so maybe you're right. Until I get seq24 figured out at least00:52

virtuI play the piano, but I am restarting to learn it01:25
virturight now I use audacity to record or JACK and ardour01:25
ventrikAny other equipment and/or samples?01:26
ventrikI'm not familer with Linux system, as such I'm going to look up those programs01:26
virtuventrik, never used softwares to record or mix it up before01:27
ventrikI meant physical equipment01:27
virtuahh01:27
virtuguitar, keyboard, sax01:28
virtubut never played well01:28
virtujust played around for fun01:28
virtubut keyboard or piano I play a little better because I had classes when child01:28
ventrikJACK, from what I read is only useful on a network? Rather, if you are only going to use one machine, let's say a laptop, to do ALL the work from start to end, JACK would be useless?01:28
ventrikI don't have Linux working yet and I'm too busy currently to make it work01:29
ventrikBut probably this week01:29
ventrikI mean JACK sounds very useful for syncing up recordings as they are being made from multiple sources.01:30
virtuventrik, maybe I am wrong but JACK is a service that will manage all your connections, like hardware and software, it will be very usefull if you'll use a lots of connections I guess01:32
ventrikAh01:32
ventrikThat's what I thought01:32
virtu"... from multiple sources" the same throught that I had01:32
virtuso JACK will be your service and ardour your main screen to work01:33
virtuif you use JACK and ardour01:33
virtuardour seems very complete01:33
ventrikArdour looks nice01:33
ventrikAudiacity I've used and that was just to make some full length songs work as ring tones lmfao01:34
virtuhttp://acidcow.com/pics/14897-dogs-diary-vs-cats-diary-2-pics.html LOL =D01:34
virtuventrik, audacity is just a start (I am on this level) =)01:35
virtuI dont have any plans to invest some huge time in computer habilities to mix or create music... just to record01:36
virtuand maybe use hydrogen in future01:36
ventrikIF you are just starting a fun thing to do it to record riffs only01:36
ventrikJust record one riff at a time, all the riffs you can think of on all your instruments01:36
ventrikIt's a task but it's well worth it01:36
virtugood idea... another thing that maybe I'd like to try is remix some stuff01:38
ventrikhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbAUwi4D3Ew01:38
ventrikWell that's what you'd do01:38
ventrikAlso when making new songs01:38
ventrikSometimes you just want to add something else t oa certain spot01:38
ventrikInstead of having to write something new and record it01:38
ventrikJust build it out of the riffs01:38
virtunice example01:39
ventrikI do that in After Effects with clasccial music01:39
virtulounge music01:39
virtua nice sound of piano with a nice delay01:40
virtuand eletric drums01:40
ventrikI have a 15 gig repository of all the musical sounds an orchestra can do. Well maybe not all but 15 gigs worth of 2-30 second clips of a single instrument01:40
virtuthatś a lot of sample01:40
ventrikAnd I can just take them and layer them up and make all new songs as long as I need them01:40

ventrikThat's Mt Eden's dubstep remix01:44
virtuyou always came to this channel?01:45
ventrikAs of yesterday01:46

virtugreat ventrik01:49
virtujust great... something like that I'll try in future01:50
* virtu bookmarking01:50
ventrikIt's a long song but really you just record each section as it's own then you put them all together and add the other elements to it, like the last section of the piece01:50
ventrikWhich is around the 3:30 mark01:50
ventrikIt gets insane01:50
virtusure01:51
ventrikCan that even be done on a piano or is that edited?01:52
virtufor my records I am waiting a behringer uca202 audio interface01:52
virtuventrik, in a workstation can do it01:52
virtuworkstation means a keyboard that can edit music without a computer01:53
virtuventrik, like Korg Oasis, Yamaha MOTIF series, Roland FANTOM01:53
ventrikAhh01:53
ventrikI was about to say Korg Oasis01:53
ventriklol01:53
ventrikDo you happen to have a Nintenod DS?01:54
virtuwith digital piano you only get a better sound and heavier keys to simulate the actions of piano's key01:54
virtuventrik, I sold mine =P01:54
virtuto get some money to bought the piano01:54
ventrikThat's a shame01:54

ventrikBut it sounds good01:58
virtuventrik, that was recorded into windows 7 and audacity01:59
virtuKawai ES6: http://www.4shared.com/audio/xcy0n1fn/Final_Fantasy_-_Aeriths_Theme.html02:00
virtuthis second one I recorded today using Ubuntu 10.10 and audacity02:01
virtulots of noise =(02:01
ventrikWhat noise?02:01
ventrikIn the highs?02:02
virtuhmm now you said something that I figure out02:02
virtuit can be my soundcard when playing that02:02
ventrikSounds like compression02:02
* virtu saving the mp3 file into his mp3 player02:02
virtuchanging sound source02:03
ventrikRecord to FLAC02:03
ventrikThen when you are done02:03
ventrikCompress to MP302:03
virtuI got a demo recorded and saved to flac02:03
ventrikLet me hear that02:04
virtuhttp://www.4shared.com/account/file/_ZT52dy3/Kawai_ES6_Piano_and_Strings.html02:04
virtusearch for a downlod button02:05

ventrikYeah got it :p02:05
ventrikWaiting on the timer02:05
virtuit's a piano + string demo from Kawai02:05
virtuplayed on Kawai ES6 model02:05
ventrikYou know what else can cause unwated bit background static sound02:06
ventrikYou need to check your grounds02:06
virtuto eliminate noise I can save as midi02:06
ventrikBut that would only be if you just has a single static sound that didn't change02:06
virtubut need some sample to play it02:06
ventrikPlaying now02:06
ventrikI'm not hearing anything out of the ordinary02:07
ventrikAnd the sound wave looks clean02:08
virtuhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smE-uIljiGo02:08
virtuventrik, to record the flac I used the same process... in a few weeks I will have a better hardware and play around it02:09
ventrikReminds me of guitar tapping02:09
ventrikIn the first songs I was just hearing double compression02:09
ventrikIn the flac02:09
ventrikIt's clean02:09
virtufor my listenings and backup I will save it as flac...02:10
ventrikBasically when you upload an MP3 to a site that converts it into a flash02:10
virtugot it a sandisk fuze 1st model to play flac files02:10
ventrikIt get's compressed a second time02:10
virtuahh nice to know that...02:11
ventrikhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xohcxxt6oHo02:11
ventrikWell for playing for your own enjoyment, MP3s are fine. Save them out as 240 or 320 KBs02:13
ventrikBut during recording, use FLAC.02:13
virtuhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qk6kLpBLghs this is a song that I will try to learn02:15
virtudo you like Dream Theater band?02:15

WACOMalthmmm03:28
ventrikThe latter is what that reminds me of03:28
WACOMaltah cool03:28

WACOMaltso I really dont understand the description of dubstep. Sounds like a lot of techno I hear and like a lot of other types of music03:32
ventrikTechno, no, more like electronic03:32
ventrikThose are two diffrent genres like Jazz and rock03:32
* WACOMalt doesnt understand all the terminology, and just groups stuff together :p03:33

ventrikAll garbled up15:45
virtuin older ubuntu's my ati graphic card didnt work well... have to install with vesa oprtion15:45
virtunow it works perfetct15:45
ventrikWhen I load vesa the gpu loads the last thing it saw15:46
holsteinyup15:46
ventrikOnly glitched out15:46
holsteinsounds about right15:46
virtuwhich model are your mobo and gpu?15:46
holsteini used to use the vesa driver on a via chip15:46
virtulet me see if I find something helpful over google15:46
holsteinand i would see some strange things righ at boot15:46
holsteinsometimes15:46
holstein*usually15:46
holsteinBUT when i would get to the desktop15:47
holsteineverything was cool15:47
ventrikI let it sit last night for a few hours15:47
ventrikHoping it was just taking a while to recompile/adjust itself15:47
holsteinyeah, probably not15:47
holsteinprobably just frying the LCD backlight ;)15:48
ventrikAs for my mobo15:48
ventrikIt's some abscure one and I'm going to focus on that later15:48
virtuhttp://www.mariusb.net/blog/2010/10/ubuntu-upgrade-to-10-10-nvidia-problems-and-how-to-fix/15:49
virtuhttp://www.downloadatoz.com/driver/articles/fix-nvidia-graphics-driver-problems-in-ubuntu-10-10.html15:50
virtudont know if it will helps15:50
ventrikSadly no, my issue is I can't get into the OS. Those solutions require me to be in the OS15:51
ventrikRecovery mode doesn't boot15:51
holsteinventrik: did you try hardy?15:51
holsteinlive?15:52
ventrikhardy?15:52
ventrikYes15:52
virtuin past times... to boot it up it was necessary to set some variables in command line to install15:53
virtuwhen you insert the cd a prompt appears and you insert which variables that you wont to turn off15:54
virtuthat´s how I installed some other distro on this note...15:54
ventrikYeah, I've done those15:56
ventrik:x15:56
virtu=(15:56
virtuso... I don´t know how to help... maybe at #ubuntu you get some15:57
ventrikDid that15:57
ventriklol15:57
virtuhttp://ubuntuforums.org/ last hope15:59
holsteinventrik: how did hardy boot?16:00
holsteinthe same?16:00
ventrikNo idea what hardy is16:00
holsteinhardy = ubuntu 8.0416:01
holsteinthe last 'long term support' release16:01
holsteinlucid = ubuntu 10.0416:01
holsteinthe current long term support16:02
holsteini was thinking ubuntu 8.04 might have a kernel that would match that hardware16:02
holsteintime-wise16:03
virtualso you have another option: download another user-friendly linux distro, like fedora, try to install or, try hardy16:04
holsteinwhen i find challenging hardware like that16:04
holsteini try a lot of live discs16:05
holsteinhardy and lucid are on that list16:05
virtuhardy will boot with default settings...16:05
virtuolder configs to new hardware16:06
holsteini try and let the live CD's do some of the detective work for me16:06
virtumaybe it work16:06
virtusure... after that just upgrade the system16:06
ventrikah16:06
holsteinOR you'll be able to see what packages you might need from backports16:07
virtunew album from linkin park isnt good like others =[16:07
holsteinlol16:08
holsteini could have told you that16:08
virtutime to pink floyd16:08
virtuthe division bell16:08
holsteinlinkin park is entertainment16:08
virtuhad began16:08
holsteinnot music16:08
holstein:)16:08
virtugood description16:08
virtuwhat do you do holstein and ventrik?16:09
holsteinfor a living?16:09
virtuwork16:09
holsteini play bass16:09
holsteinupright bass16:09
holsteinmostly jazz16:09
holsteinvirtu: and you?16:10
virtuI work with tax =P16:10
virtutax adviser here in Brazil16:10
holsteinAH16:10
virtu29 years and like music and mountain bike =)16:11
virtubacking to piano subject... the book that I bought to learn again is Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course Level 1 2 and 316:12
virtuseems very nice16:12
holsteinhey, if it works for you16:13
holsteini would suggest looking at some intrument non-specific stuff16:13
holsteingeneral theory16:13
holsteindiatonic theory16:13
holsteinlearn some of the hows and whys16:14
holsteininstead of just how to play the 12 tunes in each of those books :)16:14
holsteinnot that there's anything wrong with that16:14
virtuholstein: when I was younger I had theorical classes16:14
holsteinAH good :)16:14
virtuit helps me a lot now16:14
virtuand youtube also help =P16:15
virtuhttp://www.pianoworld.com/Uploads/files/extension_music_desk.jpg16:15
holsteinSO if i give you a progression like Gmin7 C7 ...16:15
holsteinyou can predict the key??16:15
virtunot yet16:15
holsteinand the next change?16:15
holsteinok16:15
holsteindiatonically16:16
holsteinthere is only one 7th chord16:16
virtubut... maybe I can try to know that....16:16
holsteinthe V7 chord16:16
holsteinSO16:16
holsteinif you see a 7th chord like that16:16
holsteinC716:16
holsteinyou can assume that 90% of the time16:16
holsteinits the V chord16:17
holsteinthe *five chord16:17
holsteinand the key is F16:17
virtuG A# D F16:17
holsteinsort of ;)16:17
virtuC E G A# C16:17
holsteinG Bb D F16:17
holstein^^16:17
virturight right16:17
holsteinyou need a 3rd16:17
holsteineven though...16:18
holsteinA# and Bb 'sound the same'16:18
holsteinA# is a 2nd16:18
holsteinin G16:18
holsteinand Bb is a 3rd16:18
virtuthis intervals I learned with Alfred's book16:18
holsteinA# would be what we call an 'enharmonic spelling'16:18
holsteinALSO16:18
holsteinif you think about writing hte scale out16:19
holsteinthe Gminor scale16:19
holsteinyou would need to write16:19
holsteinA and A#16:19
holsteinlike this16:19
virtugot it16:19
holsteinG A A# C...16:19
holsteinrather than the easier16:19
holsteinG A Bb C...16:19
holstein:)16:19
holsteinmost books just deal with the triads16:21
holsteindiatonically16:21
holsteinwhen you look at the 7th chords16:21
holsteinthats when you can really make some predictions16:21
virtuhttp://b.imagehost.org/view/0424/Kawai_ES6_116:22
virtuin guitar the seventh chord always are a good deal do play around16:22
holsteinthey want to resolve16:23
holsteinIF you wanted to change keys16:23
virtuexample: C chord played sometime with D note played16:23
holsteinyou can use a domiant 7th chord16:23
holsteinvirtu: yup :)16:23
virtuthe D note can be a bridge to jump to G chord16:24
holsteini guess in the blues sense of it16:24
virtunever had guitar classes... just reading about and pratice16:24
virtunow in piano... my idea is to get a nice theory background16:25
holsteinits more the 7th16:25
holsteinadding the Bb in the C chord16:25
virtuand I am not in a hurry...16:25
holsteinthen16:25
holsteinyou have a tritone interval16:25
holsteinbetween the E (3rd) and 7th (Bb)16:25
ventrikVirtu I'm a student full time16:26
ventrikLike right now16:26
ventrikAnd by full time I mean I don't get time to eat or sleep16:26
holsteinthat wants to resolve inwards to F and A16:26
virtumusic in my opinion is like math =P16:26
holsteinto support the motion to an F chord16:26
virtuthere a re a logic inside that16:26
virtu=P16:26
ventrikMusic is a river16:27
virtunow I am listening a nice song to play with guitar... Lost for Words, from Pink Floyd16:27
ventrikSometimes it flows, othertimes it's rapids16:27
virtuhow old are you holstein and ventrik?16:29
holstein3616:29
virtufrom 8 to 12 I got piano lessons and with 20 to 21 theorical lessons16:30
ventrikTwenty-Four16:30
holsteinvirtu: what kind of theory?16:30
holsteinmore classical stuff?16:31
holsteini bet you know what a 'perfect authentic cadence' is ;)16:31
ventrikA 3hrx wobble16:32
ventrikhrz16:32
ventrik:D16:32
holsteinhehe16:32
virtuit was a book called bona... it have some musical theory16:32
holsteini remember my theory III teacher16:32
holsteinfirst day of class16:32
holsteinhe said 'well, youve been learning about a bunch of dead white guys for years'16:33
holsteinnow we're going to learn about music :)16:33
virtuanother great music: Marooned =)16:33
virtumakes me travel16:33
ventrikhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yZ7-BPZTto16:34
