Monica2hey guys. anyone have experience using compiz with lxde around here?06:38
bioterrorwe all have so ancient hardware ;)06:39
Monica2:P06:39
Monica2i'm running an old PC from 2004, mind you06:39
head_victimI wouldn't know where to start with that combination actually06:39
Monica2but it has an old nvidia fx 5500 that can do nice fade ins and fade outs, which is what i'm interested in :)06:39
Monica2head-victim: just installing compiz then running compiz or compiz --replace (either seems to work) uses compiz instead of openbox06:40
Monica2but it uses some horrible default metacity-ish theme that i can't seem to change06:40
Monica2nor can i get it to run on start up06:40
bioterroryou have to add it for the startup06:41
head_victimHow does it compare though resources wise?06:41
Monica2i've not really checked, so i might as well do so now06:41
Monica2okay, so right now i'm at 347 megs of RAM06:41
head_victimI've actually found fusion-icon to be the handiest program for my gnome desktop, lets me switch so easily.06:41
Monica2(using openbox)06:41
bioterrorMonica2, 347MB right after boot?06:42
Monica2bioterror: right now06:42
Monica2and after enabling compiz... 377 mb06:42
Monica2not a MASSIVE increase, at least on this hardware (i have a gig of RAM, which i remember being incredibly happy with in 2004 :P)06:43
bioterroryeah, now in 2010 default is 4GB as minimum06:44
bioterrorso the time flies06:44
head_victimI have 10 in my main desktop :/06:44
Monica2:P show off06:44
Monica2i've only got 4 in my main PC, but i don't really ever use that much06:45
Monica2i'm not sure what to do with it all06:45
head_victimI use it for VMs06:46
head_victimTrying to run 2 VMs, HDTV and a 3d game is about what I can achieve reasonably easy.06:46
Monica2not bad :P06:46
head_victimMy Lubuntu box is a 2.4 celeron (soon to be a 3.0 or 3.2 proper intel) though so I do understand limited computing06:47
Monica2yeah06:48
Monica2i'm still struggling to figure out what to do with my parent's old laptops06:48
Monica2they bought them at an odd point which meant they were desktop CPUs in laptop cases06:48
Monica2sony vaios, incredibly hot06:48
Monica2should i hunt down some celeron mobiles and put them in? or gut the frame, put a decent heatsink on and use them as sort of disgusting looking desktops?06:49
Monica2what would you do? :P06:49
head_victimMonica2: I have a 2.8 laptop that is a normal desktop cpu that sits pretty warm. I've found Lubuntu + laptop cooler with fans keeps it reasonable.06:50
Monica2head_victim: i actually did get a laptop cooler for it, funnily enough06:51
head_victimThe other thing to do is to clear the heatsinks, they gather HEAPs of dust.06:52
Monica2or rather, i built one out of wood, two internal case fans, a spliced USB cable and a LOT of zip ties and duct tape :P06:52
Monica2head_victim: yeah, i took one apart and managed to clear out most of the dust, but they are so complicated inside06:53
head_victimHah sounds like fun, I saw them for 10 dollars and figured that would be cheaper than me trying to make one.06:53
Monica2head_victim: yeah :P the only problem is the 5 volts from the USB cable - the fans barely cause a breeze06:53
Monica2i don't know if you can make two USB cables come together to make 10 volts?06:54
head_victimNot sure to be honest06:56
Monica2:O06:58
Monica2*:P, even06:58
Monica2sorry to take the channel off-topic :P06:58
head_victimMonica2: feel free to head over to #lubuntu-offtopic if you want06:58

head_victimAny easy way to have mounted /media files show up on the Lubuntu desktop?09:55
bioterrorwel09:58
bioterrorlxde desktop works different way09:58
head_victimYeah I figured.09:58
head_victimJust create a symlink?09:58
bioterrorthat's not a solution09:59
head_victimGuess not. I don't really need it just like to know when they're mounted properly and not10:00
bioterrorhow about: df -h10:00
bioterrorto know the mount situation10:01
head_victimYeah I was just looking for something visual and always on10:02
