FirefisheHow do I keep my sound balance control from always being to the far left when I boot up a new computer session each day?  I'm using ubuntu 10.04, kubuntu-kde-4.5.1, and xfce.  Pulse Audio is set up as the primary sound interface, with alsa on the back end.  Phonon, in kde, is also using pulse audio.02:41
gr8m8I would check it in alsamixer02:42
Firefishegr8m8: Well, the thing is, it reverts back to being to the far-left every time I start the machine.02:47
Firefishegr8m8: Is there a config file I can edit somewhere?02:48
claydoh|werkFirefishe: I think there is a setting in Kmix's options to remember levels - you can try  un-checking that. I think it is enabled by default02:52
Firefisheclaydoh|werk: Thanks, I'll check that.02:52
Firefisheclaydoh|werk: There is the 'Restore volumes on login' check box, but I don't know why the balance wouldn't keep it's settings.   Wait...I am using gnome's gnome-volume-control-applet (which I have visible alongside the kmix status tray applet) -- Perhaps I should try using kmix instead of g-v-c-a?02:56
Firefisheclaydoh|werk: ie, to set the balance, log out, reboot, and log back in to check it then?02:56
FirefisheI'm going to try that.02:59

keithclarkOk, I just tried Kubuntu 10.04 and the wireless does not work????  Ubuntu works, Lubuntu works but Kubuntu does not????03:34
macokeithclark: did you use the driver manager?03:35
keithclarkYup03:35
keithclarkSo I assume that wireless is a weakpoint of Kubuntu?03:37
macothe drivers are the same regardless which gui you're using03:38
macodid the hardware driver app thingy not work for installing the drivers?03:38
macoor do you not need proprietary drivers?03:38
keithclarkApparently they are not the same03:38
macoyes they are definitely the same03:38
vinnywhat hapend with your wireless attempts?03:38
keithclarkNo proprietary requried for the rest03:38
macodoes knetworkmanager recognise that you have a wireless card?03:39
keithclarkYup03:39
macoare you clicking on knetworkmanager and assuming that because its not listing networks in *that* spot that its not finding any?03:39

keithclarkI am connect via Ubuntu right now and have the same settings03:44
vinnyand some cards have trouble with the stock network manager in Kubuntu03:45
keithclarkKubuntu does not work.  Lubuntu does03:45
vinnyyou may want to try WICD03:45
keithclarkNah, Just want the stock version to work. No mucking about.03:45
claydoh|werki would suggest installing the alternate knetworkanager applet -- plasma-widget-networkmanagement, it seems to work better than the stock one (assuming 10.04 doesn't have that by default already)03:46
keithclarkI'll stick with Ubuntu/Lubuntu.  Thanks for helping though.  Appreciated03:46
macoyou can also use ubuntu's nm frontend in kubuntu03:46
keithclarkThe Kubuntu project might want to look into this though03:46
macowhich i did for a bit when i first got 3g since knm has an unusable UI for it03:47
macoyou'll need to give more detail than that and try on 10.10 if you want that to happen03:47
macoyour exact hardware, whether its wpa1 or wpa2...03:47
keithclarkI only wanted to try Kubuntu...not troubleshoot it!03:47
macowell good luck getting someone to fix a bug you havent filed on hardware you havent disclosed03:48
keithclarkNope, not asking for  a bug fix.  That is Kubuntu's problem.  I just wanted to try it out.03:48
keithclarkNot for me I guess.03:48
macoyou did ask for one though...03:48
maco<keithclark> The Kubuntu project might want to look into this though  <-- right there03:48
keithclarkUp to them03:49
macoand all any of the other devs will tell you is we need more info to fix a bug03:49
macoseriously, just saying "it doesnt work on some random mystery hardware" is not going to result in anyone doing anything except asking you WHICH random mystery hardware03:49
macoso, no.. nobody is going to look into it if you dont even specify what's actually wrong03:50

macoand the others are also 10.04 right?03:55
keithclarkYup and one is 10.1003:55
keithclarkand it worked under 9.10 and 9.0403:56
claydoh|werki have that card in 3 diff machines03:58
claydoh|werkin 10.04 I needed to use plasma-widget-networkmanagement for it to work03:59
keithclarkDid you try it on ubuntu?03:59
claydoh|werkyes03:59
keithclarkIt worked03:59
keithclark?03:59
claydoh|werkuses the exact same drivers, just the kde stock networkmanagent applet isn't as robust04:00
* maco wonders if thats why plasma-widget-networkmanagement is default in 10.10 instead of knetworkmanager04:00
keithclarkAh...Kubuntu has work to do.04:00
claydoh|werkneed to install the firmwares using the hardware drivers tool04:00
keithclarkNope, Kubuntu has work to do.  At least for me and those that use my card.04:01
macokeithclark: actually there are 2 frontends for networkmanager in kde. claydoh|werk just said you have to use the one thats default for 10.10 since 10.04's default one doesnt work04:01
claydoh|werkmaco: I think it may be, or rather it is now default04:01
maco(and "kubuntu" develops neither of those frontends, thanks)04:01
claydoh|werkalso Kubuntu is a community, not the same as Ubuntu in a lot of ways04:02
keithclarkSo Kubuntu falls behind of other distros......at least in wireless.04:02
macoare you not listening?04:02
macoi just said the one thats not working for you was replaced in 10.10 wiht one that works04:02
claydoh|werknaw, i had the same probs using the same applet in fedora and arch04:02
macoAND the one that works is also available in 10.0404:02
macoit's not kubuntu's bug. it's kde's. any kde distro will have the bug04:03

keithclarkanyways, it looked beautiful and I'd love to try it out once Kubuntu/KDE has the wireless bugs figured out.04:08
maco*sigh*04:08
macoit *is* figured out in 10.1004:08
macodo you know how to read?04:08
keithclarkOk, I will install 10.10.  Normally I only install LTS04:09
macoor you just install plasma-widget-networkmanager in 10.0404:09
macoeither one04:09
claydoh|werkactually Kubutu = KDE for the common folks (or everyone, actually)04:09
macothe key is using the plasma frontend instead of the knetworkmanager frontend04:09
macothe difference in 10.04 and 10.10 is only in which is default and which is the alternate04:09
maco(i mean, in *this* case -- there are plenty of other differences, like newer versions of the rest of kde and the kernel and all)04:10
keithclarkAh, installing Kubuntu via Ubuntu does not allow installing a newer version of Kubuntu.04:11
macoyoud have to upgrade the whole system, if thats what you mean04:12
macoyou could also just install the other kde frontend for nm like we've been saying04:12
claydoh|werkor use the nm applet, which you may already have if you have Kubuntu installed alongside Ubuntu04:13
macooh yeah, that too04:14
maconote to self: finish that patch so the nm applet stops being so much more attractive04:14
keithclarknote to kubuntu:  make sure that we offer connectivity on par with the other distros.04:15
bigbrovarkeithclark: Kubuntu is pretty much on per with other distros when it comes to connectivity04:16
keithclarkbigbrovar, um no.04:17
bigbrovarthe issue you speak of affect kde as a whole. the kde network manager frontend is still under heavy development and is yet to reelase a stable version. what distros ship with are developement snapshot04:17
macoas mentioned before, fedora and others use the same code in their kde versions04:17
bigbrovarkeithclark: no? explain04:17
keithclarkUbuntu connects fine.  Lubuntu is just fine.04:18
macoand, again, a more-actively-developed frontend is being used in 10.10 and going forward, so something /has/ been done04:18
macokeithclark: those are not kde distros04:18
macoare you suggesting that kubuntu should ship gnome software?04:18
macoit'll be a warm day on mars...04:19
keithclarkOk, I'm a gnome guy trying kde for the first time.  Just suggestions.  I'll try again in a few releases.   Sorry about the distraction.04:19
bigbrovarkeithclark: ubuntu and lubuntu are based on the gnome desktop environment. the gnome frontend for network manager is much more stable and feature complete than the kde equivalent04:20
bigbrovarkeithclark: you can always install the gnome networkmanager applet on kde I use to do that before kubuntu 10.10 and it works pretty well.04:21
claydoh|werk10.10....04:21
keithclarkbigbrovar, I believe that lubuntu is based on lxde, no?04:21
macoyes, lubuntu is lxde+openbox, iirc04:22
bigbrovarkeithclark: u guessed right04:23
keithclarkI see04:24
seawingHi, I installed 10.10 a couple months ago and after upgrading my memory things worked well.  I am now experiencing very low wireless connectivity even though network manager says I have a good signal.  It seems to be better when I use konqueror but still very slow.  does anyone have any ideas?05:18

lieuwehey, i'd like to have a part of the screen dedicated to konsole, so that other windows can't cover it, but there doesn't seem to be a konsole widget i can use, any hints/tips?20:59
d_edlieuwe: yakuake probably does what you want21:00
lieuwed_ed: does it have an option to not auto-hide?21:02
KimLaRouxlieuwe, just setting konsole as "keep above other windows" won't do it?21:03
lieuweKimLaRoux: nope, then my windows will slide under21:03
KimLaRouxah, I see21:04
lieuweKimLaRoux: think an always-show pannel with konsole21:04
KimLaRouxonly ways I can see is either find/buil a widget that works within a dock, or use a dedicated monitor/screen21:04
crysknifeor simply use an activity21:05
lieuweyakuake works for me21:07
Walzmyn(running 10.04) I just got updates for 266 packages, mostly KDE related, but there was no announcement on the website, is this right or have I got something fookered?21:08
