kaushalwhen i run the time command. i get real user and sys values02:51
kaushalwhat does user and sys mean ?02:51
head_victimkaushal: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/lucid/man1/time.1.html02:54
DKG779I was wondering if I could get some help please, on one of my laptops out of necessity I run dual boot Ubuntu 10.4 and XP, after updates yesterday my GNU grub boot loader has dissapeared and when I select Ubuntu it restarts the computer. I went into windows and into the ubuntu folder I copied the disk folder. when I did a fresh ubuntu install, no drama's until I replaced the disk folder in winslows ?02:56
head_victimkaushal: or more specifically (detailed) http://stackoverflow.com/questions/556405/what-do-real-user-and-sys-mean-in-the-output-of-time102:57
head_victimDKG779: you might need to reinstall grub02:58
kaushalhead_victim: Thanks and understood now02:59
DKG779ok I used the wubi installer through windows, how do I reinstall grub head_victim ?02:59
head_victimDKG779: ooh wubi? I have no idea how that works at all.02:59
head_victimDKG779: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/reinstall-ubuntu-grub-bootloader-after-windows-wipes-it-out/ that is what I would have suggested until you mentioned wubi. It may still help but I'm not certain03:00
nisshhthats exactly why i hate dual booting windows and ubuntu :)03:01
head_victimActually you said the option was there but it just rebooted when you selected it. So that link probably isn't the issue.03:01
nisshhwindows ALWAYS wipes the bootloader :)03:01
head_victimnisshh: dual boot works fine as long as you do proper installs and do the linux one second.03:01
nisshhhead_victim, yeah, but if you fiddle with the windows install, or reinstall the windows install, itll do it03:01
DKG779ok, is there anyway the root.disk folder can be mounted on another ubuntu system so I can recover my data ?03:02
nisshhDKG779, use a livecd if you have one and manually mount the partition03:03
DKG779ok I have a disk that says try ubuntu, install inside windows, or install ubuntu. So try Ubuntu, then how do I mount within that head_victim?03:05
head_victimnisshh: ah ok I just didn't know how wubi worked whether it used normal partitions, etc.03:05
DKG779I mean nisshh sorry03:05
head_victimDKG779: tis ok, it's out of my league when you start talking wubi sorry.03:05
nisshhhead_victim, i havent used wubi either, but people are always having boot problems with it03:05
DKG779no drama's head_victim03:06
nisshhDKG779, hit try ubuntu, the open a terminal in the livecd and mount the partition by name03:06
DKG779what is the mount command I'd type for root.disk03:07
DKG779?03:07
nisshhDKG779, im not sure what you mean by root.disk?03:07
DKG779I saved a folder from ubuntu with in windows that has root.disk 8gb and swap.disk which I am assuming is my swap space as it is 2 gb03:09
DKG779I assumed that had all my data on it03:09
DKG779I'm guessing I should of asked for help earlier before I complicated things ?03:12
nisshhDKG779, i do not know how to fix your problem now, sorry, wubi is more of a newbie requested hack than anything, i tend to stay away from it03:14
nisshhDKG779, like head_victim, i am not familiar with how wubi works, sorry :(03:15
head_victimDKG779: I'd ask on the mailing list03:16
DKG779no worries, thanks for trying... lol this is why I have a dedicated windows desktop pc and a dedicated linux desktop pc to back up sentimental stuff like photo's, if I lose bookmarks etc. I can live with that03:16
DKG779only drama's I seem to have is when it comes to dual boot and updates03:16
DKG779certain updates really tick off dual boot03:17
DKG779but thanks for your time anyway03:18
head_victimDKG779: yeah it just needs someone who's used wubi before to help out. I'm sure someone on the mailing list will have the answers03:18
nisshhDKG779, head_victim, there is also the askubuntu website :)03:19
head_victimnisshh: or the launchpad answers.03:19
nisshh(if the mailing list doesnt turn up anything)03:19
nisshhhead_victim, askubuntu easily trumps LP answers in popularity now :)03:19
nisshhEVERYONE uses askubuntu instead now03:19
head_victimCan anyone please explain why we've all shunned a perfectly good system to adopt something that is well outside our control?03:19
head_victimI can't see any benefit to using it.03:20
head_victimAnd no one can explain why it happened?03:20
DKG779ok, what I am going to try on another pc that has dedicated ubuntu is to swap that root.disk. as there is no dual boot could be fun and I will let you know if it works03:20
nisshhhead_victim, lp answers has far fewer features and is designed for asking specific projects questions, whereas askubuntu is designed for all ubuntu related things03:20
head_victimWhat features are lacking?03:20
nisshhhead_victim, one sec, ill find you a link i think will explain it :)03:21
head_victimI'm not being rude or anything I just can't find anyone who's been able to answer this question despite asking in multiple places.03:21
head_victimI'm tempted to write an askubuntu question on it.03:21
nisshhDKG779, if i was you i would ditch wubi and just dual boot without it03:21
nisshhhead_victim, go for it lol :)03:21
DKG779how do I do that nisshh, gparted, separate partition ?03:22
head_victimI'd be more than happy to jump on board but I just want to know why we're ditching something that functions perfectly and is well integrated into existing support networks for something that Ubuntu or Canonical have no control over, have limited input into and is entirely separate?03:22
nisshhDKG779, you can do it either on 2 partitions on the same disk, or on two seperate disks03:22
nisshhhead_victim, http://askubuntu.com/faq and http://askubuntu.com/about03:23
DKG779ok, will look into it nisshh as wubi has ticked me off for the last time03:23
nisshhDKG779, one sec, ill find you the wiki docs on dual booting03:23
head_victimnisshh: that's just advertising with no reason to use it over launchpad.03:24
DKG779ta03:24
nisshhhead_victim, what if you talk to a big askubuntu advocator? will that help answer your questions?03:25
head_victimnisshh: only if they can tell me why it's any better than launchpad in features or function.03:25
nisshhhead_victim, fair enough, let me just ask him03:25
DKG779oh sorry to interrupt the debate guys03:25
nisshhDKG779, hehe03:25
DKG779if I am going to start redoing systems is there any major reason to update to 10.10 over 10.04 LTS ?03:26
head_victimDKG779: for a desktop 10.10 has a lot of upgrades. 03:27
nisshhDKG779, newer software? better theme and UI? bugfixes?03:27
nisshhneed i say more?03:27
DKG779ok, sweet I'll download it right now pmsl03:27
head_victimDKG779: don't stress about interupting, I've just had this bee in my bonnet over this for a long time because no one can answer a simple question that should have been asked at the start.03:27
DKG779kk03:28
nisshhhead_victim, he isnt around atm, ill let you know later03:31
head_victimI just think if they spent as much time promoting the answers on launchpad as they did with this silly ask stuff as a project we'd be better off. I don't understand why they'd split it off unless they were to close down the answers on launchpad. Which doesn't make sense what so ever.03:31
DKG779hour and a half I will have it03:31
head_victimI'm still getting requests for posted CDs, it's great.03:32
DKG779how much is it to get a cd posted ?03:32
head_victimDepends on where you get it from03:32
nisshhhead_victim, one major improvement is that askubuntu lets the users decide if a question is important and needs answering, so the more important and relevant questions get more visibility and the spam and crap gets none03:32
nisshhDKG779, none if you use shipit, but why not just download the ISO?03:33
DKG779yeah, downloading the .iso now I can never wait LOL it is like a christmas present you actually love 03:34
DKG779shipit ?03:36
head_victimnisshh: popularity does not = importance.03:36
nisshhhead_victim, hehe03:45
blahdeblahhead_victim: That's "!=" in Linux-speak. ;-)06:26
nisshhhehe06:27
DKG779need some help please, when I try and install ubuntu 10.10 it gets so far and then my screen powers down like it is going into a resoloution my monitor can not support08:26
blahdeblahDKG779: From which media are you installing?08:34
Zanthusanyone had any problems with cups taking ages to print something?09:00
