gl1d3rDoes anyone know how to get a server working over wifi on a password protected network?00:00
jiboumansspamaps: actually, it looks like the *last* thing cloud-init does is set the hostname.. so it'll override whatever i do in runcmd =/00:00
SpamapSjiboumans: guess you'll have to create an upstart task ;)00:03
jiboumansspamaps: don't be silly00:04
SpamapStask\nscript\necho bah > /etc/hostname && hostname bah\nend script00:04
SpamapSstart on startup00:04
SpamapSactually00:04
SpamapSstart on filesystem00:04
jiboumansand how would i pass that through userdata?00:05
SpamapScloud-init has a mime type for upstart jobs00:05
jiboumansoh hells no00:06
jiboumansi have some shiny plain text yaml to pass00:06
jiboumanswe're not butchering that for somethign silly like this :)00:06
SpamapSjiboumans: write-mime-multipart can take your yaml and marry it with an upstart job. :)00:07
jiboumansspamaps: surely in our time together you know that 'can' and 'should' aren't always the same thing :)00:07
SpamapSjiboumans: the mime type thing is a little bit obtuse, but what else can you do to insert unrelated data of unknown type in a single location?00:08
SpamapSactually00:08
SpamapSoo00:08
jiboumansthings that look more obvious right now: 1) disable cloud metadata service00:08
jiboumans2) run-cmd + fork00:08
jiboumans3) crontab entry00:08
SpamapSyou can just add it to the cloud-config00:08
SpamapS#upstart-job\n00:08
SpamapSfollowed by the upstart job00:08
jiboumanswhere're you reading this?00:09
SpamapSdocs/examples00:09
SpamapShmm not lucid seems00:09
SpamapS2010-06-17 "fix cloud-config.conf upstart job"00:09
jiboumansyeah, has to be lucid00:10
jiboumansalthough i keep telling smoser to spin new isos with backporting cloud-init00:10
jiboumansit's probably the single most awesome app shipped by default on an ami imho :)00:10
SpamapSjiboumans: actually #upstart-job should work in 0.5.1000:11
SpamapSjiboumans: and agreed on that point. There's not much reason to spend time perfecting an AMI if you can write 4 lines of cloud-config and have your app deployed and configured00:12
jiboumansspamaps, using: /usr/share/doc/cloud-init/examples/upstart-cloud-config.txt ?00:12
scubes13what is best method of getting bind9 9.7.2 installed on 10.04 server?00:13
SpamapSscubes13: you can try just building from the natty source package. If that works, submit it for backports.00:14
* SpamapS wishes the launchpad/ubuntu/+source/$package pages showed backports00:14
scubes13SpamapS: would I just grab it from here? http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/i386/bind9/download00:15
jiboumansalso: https://launchpad.net/~hauke/+archive/bind9/+build/194059800:15
jiboumansscubes13: ^00:15
SpamapSscubes13: note that LaMont seems to be maintaining a backports PPA https://launchpad.net/~lamont/+archive/backports00:15
lamontSpamapS: maintain might be a bit overstretching it.00:16
lamontI tend to keep a current-ish bind9 package for hardy and lucid there00:16
lamontfor really sloppy versions of "recent"00:16
* lamont uploads his latest missives00:16
* lamont tries to remember which of his packages he just broke for hardy00:17
scubes13jiboumans: maybe a stupid question, or obvious.. how do I proceed to install from the link you posted? ie, do I add this as a source (somehow) to sources.list?00:18
jiboumansscubes13: it links to: https://launchpad.net/~hauke/+archive/bind900:19
jiboumansthat explains how to add the ppa, basically:00:19
jiboumansadd-apt-repository ppa:hauke/bind900:19
jiboumansscubes13: no guarantee of the quality of course, but another ubuntu user has built it for lucid00:19
scubes13thanks - will give these a shot and see how far i get!00:21
scubes13really appreciate the help SpamapS jiboumans !00:21
jiboumansnp scubes13, good luck00:21

StrangeCharmmy freshly installed system isn't booting. my bios gets to 'verifying dmi pool', then nothing happens. things worked fine with this hardware configuration under the previous OS. there's no problem booting from removable media, just not when i try to boot from the hdd03:48
twbStrangeCharm: were you asking about this yesterday?03:49
StrangeCharmyep, twb. i ran file -s on sda, and it tells me that there's an x86 boot sector. looking at the alledged boot partition, there's a folder called grub. i'm not sure how to check that grub is installed right on that hdd, though.03:51
twbI still don't know :-(03:52
twbI think I'd be swapping hardware components in/out03:52
demonsporkChuck Norris keeps a photo of David Tennent under his pillow. Every night before bed, he strokes it, and sometimes, he cries.03:52
twbAlso obviously you should unplug everything not needed to boot03:52
demonsporktennant*03:52
StrangeCharmit just doesn't make any sense to me. i'm going to keep asking periodically, until someone knows what broke.03:52
twbdemonspork: you know what annoys me most?  He has a wicked Scottish accent, but didn't use it for Dr. Who03:53
demonsporklol03:53
demonsporkyes03:53
twbStrangeCharm: most of us aren't mind readers and can't/won't break into your place to test your hardware03:53
StrangeCharmtwb, i hope that someone will eventually go 'have you tried x' and be right03:54
StrangeCharmcan i boot a hdd from the live cd?03:54
twbTheoretically, yes03:54
twbpass root=/dev/sda1 boot=local or so03:55
twbThe kernel versions will need to match03:55
StrangeCharmwhich they should, if i'm using a live cd, after just trying to install03:55
twbWell TECHNICALLY it's a different build server vs. desktop, but probably not enough to piss it off03:56
StrangeCharmactually, i'm using the alt install disk and the desktop disk03:56
StrangeCharmroot=/dev/sda1 boot=local doesn't seem to do anything03:57
twbStrangeCharm: you're passing those to the kernel at the boot: prompt?03:58
StrangeCharmtwb, no, i was typing that into the kernet on the live disk03:59
StrangeCharmand when i say 'kernet', i mean command prompt04:00
twbStrangeCharm: that won't work04:00
StrangeCharmhmn, maybe i just need to mark the boot partition as bootable and try again ( the installer won't do that)04:00
twbStrangeCharm: no.04:00
twbEither you can do what I tell you, or you can ignore me and just keep guessing.04:01
StrangeCharmso i should reboot and tell it to boot from /dev/sda under the other boot option ?04:01
twbYou asked if you could boot the HDD from the live CD.  You can, by telling the CD's bootloader to tell the CD's kernel and ramdisk "boot from an HDD" (boot=local) and which HDD to use (root=/dev/sda1).04:02
twbWhere sda1 is the appropriate partition for your root filesystem04:03
twbOh: it won't work if your root filesystem is under md RAID or LVM, because the live CD doesn't include support for those in its initrd.04:03
StrangeCharmtwb, i don't have an unencrypted root, only an unencrypted boot, is that ok?04:04
twbStrangeCharm: no, that won't work04:04
twbYou can pick "rescue" in the server (or alternate) CD, which will eventually allow you to mount your root filesystem on /target and chroot into it.  That will work with mdadm/lvm -- I THINK it'll also work with an encrypted rootfs.04:05
StrangeCharmtwb, how does that help me?04:06
twbStrangeCharm: I don't know; presumably you can then do <whatever> to fix it.04:06
StrangeCharmsadly, i still don't know what whatever is04:06
twbRight.04:07
StrangeCharmcould it hurt to set the boot partition as flagged bootable?04:07
twbgrub will ignore the boot flag.04:07
StrangeCharmbut i never get to grub04:07
twbStrangeCharm: unplug all unnecessary components from the system04:09
StrangeCharmthat hasn't done anything. it just updates the dmi pool after the change, then verifies it as usual, in every case, not doing anything else afterwards04:10
StrangeCharmat minimum, i have the hdd, video card, cpu, ram, psu, and fans04:11

qman__I hope this isn't internet-facing15:44
qman__just adjust the permissions on dhcpd.conf to grant www-data permission15:44
qman__I'd change the group-owner to www-data15:44

uvirtbotLaunchpad bug 681071 in upstart "Sometimes fork() generates a PTRACE_EVENT_CLONE -- upstart misses this event and incorrectly tracks the daemon" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/68107118:15
ivoksSpamapS: :) thanks18:15
PrestonConnorsIs apparmor a Ubuntu-only thing? Does it come included with Debian?18:19
SpamapSivoks: no problem.. allowed me to get intimate with upstart's ptrace stuff. :)18:20
ivoksSpamapS: that problem is my nightmare for some time :)18:21
ivoksSpamapS: i have an upstart job that sends term in pre-stop to corosync and then waits for some time before exiting :)18:22
SpamapSivoks: yeah, thats not supposed to happen. ;)18:22
SpamapSivoks: I'm working on a patch to upstart to solve that bug btw..18:22
SpamapSIt may be 3 lines18:23
SpamapSor, I may be incredibly naive18:23
ivoksSpamapS: i've learned that being too optimistic always backfires18:24
zulheh18:24
zulivoks: you have been an ubuntu dev too long :)18:24
ivoksoh, that reminds me18:24
ivoksi nee to apply for ubuntu-motu :)18:24
PrestonConnorsDoes anyone know how apparmor and libvirt communicate with each other? Specifically under what conditions does libvirt trigger operation="profile_remove"?18:27
eagles0513875PrestonConnors: apparmor fyi comes on most distros18:29
PrestonConnorsI'm trying to work with apparmor but I'm unclear on what operation="profile_remove" is and what triggers it in relation to libvirt and virsh start.18:29

ScottKThat's the intent.18:37
DavieyScottK: The wiki page is what you /want/, or what it is currently?18:38
SpamapSScottK: is there a spec somewhere that maybe one of us could pick up if you don't get to it?18:38
ScottKDaviey: ~current.18:38
DavieyScottK: If what you want is spec'd out, it could be split up - if you are concerned you don't have enough time.18:39
ScottKSpamapS: There is, but it won't help much.  The work item is something like "[kitterman] Write up a proposal for what we want to change for the Tech Board"18:39
draven_solis encrypted raid possible using the server install 10.04 disk?18:39
DavieyScottK: Ah, ok - that is kinda a blocker18:40
draven_soli've managed to successfully install what appears to be  an encrypted raid system but if i power down and pull one drive i can't boot degraded like i can if i don't have the encryption on the raid18:40

SpamapSScottK: but if we wrote a draft for you, you could just edit/stamp it and present it for the TB?18:50

claydi am running a small web server on 10.04 and noticing that the memory useage is almost completely masxed out.  any hints at what i could go look at to figure out what is causing this?22:05
Datzclayd: see what is using memory with program "top"22:15
claydi ust found that.  apache is using quite a bit but i dont understand why.  will have to look more into that.  thank though22:16
RoyKclayd: set swappiness to 10022:17
RoyKit helps a bit22:17
claydwhat is swappiness?  is that in the apache conf file?22:17
RoyKswapping out pages not used much22:17
RoyKclayd: sysctl vm.swappiness22:18
RoyKnormally it's at 60, set it to 100 and linux will swap out earler22:18
RoyKmeaning more memory will be used for usual stuff even if some process allocates a bunch22:19
claydi am starting to think my biggest issue is running a wordpress site on a 512 cloud server :(22:20
claydI figured it wouldn't be that big of an issue/.   I will try swappiness though.  anything can help from what i can see22:20
RoyKare you administrating the server yourself?22:21
claydyes22:21
RoyKhow many VMs? how much memory?22:21
JanCI think clayd means he has a virtual server22:22
claydoh the server is on the Rackspace system.  I am not admin on that side of things.  I only have admin on the VM22:22
_Techie_if it is possible, convert the wordpress site to static pages nad host it that way rather than using a modular setup22:23
_Techie_that should make things run faster22:23
JanCit should run fine in a VM with 512 MiB, unless it has a huge number of visitors22:24
RoyK_Techie_: I think you should ask the #wordpress people about that, but afaik, no, I don't think that's possible22:24
PiciThere are worpdress plugins that will do that.22:24
claydactually you can.  there is a plug in for it that does it for you but i am not a huge fan of it for everything.  You can still set up completely static pages.22:25
JanCif the site doesn't have a lot of traffic it might help to limit the number of apache child processes, and/or recycle them more often22:26
claydalso a big factor to the load is the requirments and all the massive content (images and such)22:26

_Techie_IdleOne, is there any particular reason i havent been banned from here, being that its the only channel where nobody has complained, ive had people complain over in #xubuntu where its far more dead tahn it is here23:21
claydmade off topic comments :)23:21
_Techie_clayd, the ban is about my away nick23:22
_Techie_which i use because not all clients show different colours on nicks in the userlist23:23
_Techie_the freenode qwebirc client being included in the group of clients that dont23:23

_Techie_i wish to speak with an op of #ubuntu-server to see whether they deem my away nicks to be of a neusance so i can decide if i wish to leav this channel as i did #xubuntu23:32
claydis it common to have apache running 10 times on a server with no traffic?23:33

veovis1In Ubuntu Server 10.04, I have a banner that tells me basic resource usage whenever I log in through SSH.  On one server, we requested an install of 10.04, but they installed 10.10 instead, and it doesn't have that.  What is that called so I can enable it again23:55
