[05:09] hi... 03.09am here and I am still working [05:09] hey virtu [05:11] hi holstein, how r u? [05:12] not bad [05:12] I am tired [05:12] having some family time [05:12] thanksgiving and all that [05:12] nice holstein =) [05:12] good time :) [05:13] just recovering from a massive dinner [05:13] so... this friday time to spend some money =D [05:13] getting ready for the next one [05:13] wow =D [05:13] tomorrow [05:13] go get a walk =) [05:13] hehe [05:13] im trying so save an XP install for a guy [05:13] hard drive died [05:13] and i dont really have time to work on it in the day [05:14] over the holidays [05:14] and i already suggested just getting a new computer [05:14] anyways, im chipping away at it [05:15] one moment... [05:15] VPN time [05:50] I want to install ubuntustudio on my sister's laptop. I'm trying to decide between 10.04 and 10.10. Is it worth going with the LTS version? [05:51] That is, are most things likely to work longer in the LTS version? Gah, this question seems sort of vacuous. I just don't have enough experience with ubuntu to know. [05:52] i would suggest 10.04 lts [05:52] normal ubuntu [05:52] vanilla [05:52] unless she has been using ubuntu or linux for a while [05:52] and is looking for a pro audio or video rig [05:52] otherwise [05:52] she and install whatever software she wants [05:52] that is in ubuntustudio [05:53] in the normal ubuntu [05:53] 10.10 is fine as well [05:53] either way [05:53] She hasn't. Hmm. Thanks for the words of wisdom. She does photography, but isn't a pro graphics person. Maybe vanilla ubuntu would be better... [05:53] i just like the LTS's [05:53] linguinii: she can always install the gimp [05:53] or whatever [05:54] ubuntustudio is just a few metapackages really [05:54] and theme-ing [05:54] that is slick :) [05:54] BUT some things are different [05:54] that the average user [05:54] may not need [05:54] and may actually make it more difficult [05:54] for no good reason [05:55] linguinii: also [05:55] the vanilla versions are live [05:55] i would suggest running a live CD prior to install [05:55] regardless [05:55] just to see how all the hardware works [05:56] holstein, Thanks; I'll try that. I have a 9.10 live CD, and it seemed to work. I might download 10.04 and install from there. Although I could probably upgrade from the 9.10 cd, couldn't I? [05:56] you can [05:56] i wouldnt though [05:56] that would take way longer [05:56] unless you have super slow download speed [05:56] and the fresh install is always preffered :) [05:58] linguinii: what are you running? [05:59] there is also something to be said for giving her exactly what you have [05:59] so you can help :) [06:05] holstein, dell 1505e inspiron [06:07] holstein, I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a desktop. I _think_ it was upgraded from 9.10, but don't remember for sure. [06:07] cool [06:08] yeah, i think it would be worth DL'ing the 10.04 lts live CD [06:08] and make sure the wifi works [06:08] OR is easy to install [06:08] should be easy enough :) [06:13] holstein, Thanks; you have changed my course. I'm now downloading the 10.04 cd. [06:37] :) [06:37] good luck to you both [06:37] * holstein heading to bed... GN
